Van is very rough, but is running and drives. The reverse gear needs work. Has a running 5.0 liter V8. Clear title. The odometer reads 171378.9. I have no reason to believe it has been reset, but cannot make any guarantees since I have n o way of knowing. I have the van for sale locally so reserve the right to cancel this listing if I get a local offer.

Who are we, you ask? Our founders are "car guys" through and through. Myself, a native Californian graduate of USC who has been in love with the automobile for as long as I can remember. My business partner, a native Chicagoan amateur race car driver who has custom built some of the nicest cars that I have ever seen. We are very proud of the relationships and friendships that we have built with our customers and the fact that our facility is visited constantly by local Chicagoans who look at us as a "car show" or "car museum". There are always interesting cars to come see and we look forward to the positive reactions from passers by. Being that Dan and I are both fathers, myself having a child with special needs, we understand human compassion and have no desire to have an unhappy customer ever. We also understand what it is like to be on the other side of this transaction and know from experience what it means to be trustworthy and thorough throughout your buying process. Whether you will be flying in to Chicago to pick up you new car and perhaps see the city or simply having your new car shipped, we will stay with you through the whole process. Need financing or transport help? No problem, we have you covered. We thank you for looking at our inventory and we sincerely hope to add you to the Windy City Motorsports family! **Complimentary Airport Pick-Up Service** (ORD) Chicago O'Hare or (MDW) Chicago Midway The Best Pricing Structure (No Hassles - No Pressure Tactics - No Commissions) Professional, Knowledgeable, and Courteous Staff Rare, Desirable, and Hard To Find Specialty Vehicles Outstanding Overall Service Since 1990 Conveniently Located: O'Hare International Airport (ORD) ...only 20 minutes Midway Airport (MDW) ... only 40 minutes Downtown Chicago ... only 30 minutes Extremely Close to Illinois Interstate Highways: I-355 I-294 I-290 I-90 ***Local, Nationwide, International & Canadian Shipping Questions?: If you have a question or concern about shipping locally, nationwide, Internationally, or from the USA to Canada, we refer all of our clients to Mach1 Transportation. Terms of Sale Overview We reserve the right to end this listing at anytime should the vehicle no longer be available for sale. The following terms of sale apply to all of our listings. Payment Terms: The successful high bidder will submit a $500 non-refundable deposit within 2 business days of the close of the auction to secure the vehicle. Buyer agrees to pay remaining balance due (plus applicable fees and taxes) within 5 days of the close of the auction. All financial transactions must be completed before delivery of the vehicle. Payment Methods: Cash (In Person), certified check, bank transfer, Paypal, or 3rd-party financing. Fees and Taxes: **Illinois buyers please add applicable sales tax. We must also collect sales tax for Arizona~Indiana~Florida~Michigan~Massachussets & S.Carolina residents. - Due to the fact that we often have multiple prospective buyers for the same vehicle, Windy City Motorsports will not hold a vehicle without a signed non-refundable deposit, a signed purchase order, and a signed General Information and Terms of Sale. Without this deposit, all vehicles will remain advertised, listed, and available for sale. - Although we make every attempt to deliver our vehicles with a full set of keys, key fobs, books, floor mats, manuals, etc., we cannot guarantee that a pre-owned vehicle will have all of these items. Most of them can be ordered at a minimum cost in addition to the price of the vehicle, if you desire to do so. The substantial reduction in price between new and pre-owned vehicles reflects in part the chance that these items might be missing. -This vehicle is being sold as is, where is with no warranty, expressed written or implied. The seller shall not be responsible for the correct description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein, and makes no warranty in connection therewith. No allowance or set aside will be made on account of any incorrectness, imperfection, defect or damage. Any descriptions or representations are for identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. It is the responsibility of the buyer to have thoroughly inspected the vehicle, and to have satisfied himself or herself as to the condition and value and to bid based upon that judgement solely. The seller shall and will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects associated with this vehicle at the buyer's request prior to the close of sale. Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs regardless of any oral statements about the vehicle. - We will accept the following four forms of payment only: bank wire (preferred), cashier's check (which will have to be verified during business banking hours), or cash (which must be delivered in person). Personal, E-Loan, or company checks will not be accepted. Credit cards may be used to make the initial deposit, up to $1,500. - Although we make every attempt to accurately describe our vehicles, it is not possible to go into enough detail to satisfy some buyers. Our vehicles are all carefully selected, professionally detailed, and reconditioned (if needed) prior to delivery. We are proud of our vehicles; we put our name on the back of each one, and they all represent something we would drive ourselves. That said, most of our vehicles are pre-owned and driven and therefore have been subject to normal wear and tear. Please do not rely on our descriptions only. It is the buyer..s sole responsibility to confirm all vehicle options, accessories, modifications, condition, factory paint codes, etc. with the vehicle manufacturer or a third party inspection service. Windy City Motorsports encourages third party vehicle inspections and can assist with this process within reason. We will not be held responsible for any claims after delivery of a vehicle due to this inspection opportunity. - If you are unsure of anything, please ask. Do not assume anything. - Vehicles may be picked up locally or shipped at the buyer..s expense. At your request, Windy City Motorsports can coordinate the transportation of your newly purchased vehicle. We have many quality carriers available at a reasonable cost. As we are not the responsible party for loading, unloading, or driving the truck, Windy City Motorsports will not be held liable for any claims arising from vehicle shipping, delays, or damage incurred while in transit. All claims are between the buyer and the shipping company. Out of state buyers are responsible for all state, county, city taxes and fees, as well as title/registration fees in the state that the vehicle will be registered. This van is in very good running condition and has the original 88,819 miles. We are the second owner. We just put on brand new tires and had the front end aligned. It also just passed inspection (6/24). There is no rust (or very little), and is in good condition. Seats 7 comfortably and the back seat folds down into a bed. Would be a great van to take on trips.Known issues: 1. Latch holding back door is broken but doesn't affect opening and closing of the door (see picture)2. Check engine light comes on and off. Had that checked and mechanic said it was an oxygen sensor. We had it replaced twice and light still comes on and code states the same thing (have receipt to prove that it was replaced). Mechanic said not to worry about it, that it's probably coming on because of the age of vehicle. Doesn't affect the driving and we've not had any problems other than the light comes on and off. 3. Passenger window sometimes sticks and won't open. We live on gravel road and figure it was due to the dust. When we bought it in 2011 the alternator went out so that has been replaced 6/29/11. Also had an A/C line replaced with additional freon when first got it, as well (7/20/11).

It has new Plexiglas shelves as well as a new Plexiglas window for serving the ice cream. It is one large window that flips up for a large serving tabletop, and tons of space to display and serve. The white paint job is new, and flawless, the interior paint is also white, and the floors have a grit paint to help with traction and are very easy to clean. It has an extension on the roof which permits you to stand upright throughout the van except in the driver cab. Everything was remodeled to Los Angeles County Health Code requirements, including the partition, dividing the driver cab and the rear for sales. The large freezer will be included in the sale. It does require to be plugged in. Plugging it in at night as well as using dry ice during the day was very cost effective, saving us loads on wasted product. The engine was completely rebuilt, so although it shows she has a few miles, it’s a beautifully rebuilt engine that runs very well and is very reliable. There is also a couch that is included in the sale that converts into a bed. The van has a ton of storage space, both above the drivers cab as well as a large shelf in the rear of the van for inventory. There is also a speaker on the outside of the van which plays the traditional ice cream truck music, controlled inside the cab. There is a CD player and radio included as well, the CD player is aftermarket. >>>>> DRAMA FREE ZONE >>>>>>KILLER DEAL<<<<<<< Old school Chevy VaN named SAMMIE (the orig owners name and seen in photo w/wife)! Super SOLID Garage kept 2 owner CREAM PUFF. 71K original miles. I have over $17,500 invested in this van to date. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BID only if funds are in place and you're serious. Purchased from original owner (sammie morris) April-07. So far I've located over $11,700.00 in receipts NOT including purchase price and I'm certain I'll find more. This has been an EMOTION over INTELLECT endeavour. I have a passion for old school vintage 60's and 70's vintage VANS for 3 decades. I have owned several dozen but this is the cleanest, most dependable, and BY FAR the FASTEST to date. The only reason I'm selling this is to catch up on my property taxes before it's too late. It BREAKS my HEART to do this! SIGNED/autographed by Mike Ness and Johnny 2Bags from Social Distortion (seen in pic) on passenger side sun visor. This is a turn key van with NO work currently needed now or in the foreseeable future. It is an ultra reliable daily driver or wonderful addition to someones car/truck collection. Retains 90% of orig paint. NO hidden or undisclosed problems whatsoever. LESS than 8K miles on GM 350/330 horsepower Crate Motor. 7-22-2009 At 63k Motor PROFESSIONALLY installed by Sutliff Chevrolet Dealership. Engine is JUST broken in! Included are ALL Books/Receipts/Documentation/Warranty Information and even the original Protect~O~Plate! JUST Prior to listing, Sammie passed a PA State inspection and has a gleaming new inspection sticker. Mechanically, this van needs nothing. It is ready to go 100,000 miles with ease. Probably 200,000++ plus if proper regular maintence and service preformed. She is extremely fast. Quick off the line and super powerful with gobs of torque. It blows the doors off many cars. It's fun to watch the faces of unsuspecting drivers. Hard for people to believe. Genuine 3 on the tree SLEEPER. It has a low loud lopy idle and a powerband ALL through the rpm range especially at around 4500 the back tires can break loose from the power. Headers, dual exhaust and turbo glass pack mufflers with stainless pipes exiting in front of rear tires. a LOT of FUN! There's honestly too much too list. Only one bench seat is shown in pics however both are included. The other one is in perfect condition too! Major work recently completed other than engine is Heater Core, HEAVY DUTY Radiator, High Performance clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing and recently replaced Holley with brand NEW Eldebrock Carbeurator. Clutch grips GREAT! STRONG with No slippage, no shimmy, Goes thru gears flawlessly and drives straight as an arrow down the highway at any speed you decide on. No rattles/noises/vibrations/or pulling. It has a 68 RS Camaro steering wheel and 67 SS Camaro front Super Sport Badge. The interior is CLEAN and COLORFUL. The combination of faux wood and blue vinyl is happy indeed. I installed a mid century vintage rug over the pristine original factory carpet to protect it from any damage when hauling furniture and so forth. I left the tassles on along front just for fun. The factory carpet in front section exhibits more spotting and deterioration especially at drivers door. The Side rear windows have old archetectural paneling over them to cut down on direct sunlight and offer a little privacy. circa 1990 HIGH end PIONEER PREMIER DEH-P930 detachaable face CD Player professionally installed and mounted under drivers seat. Remote Control, Owners Manual, and orig BOX included. vintage 80's YAMAHA Model YHB-A88 old school 4ohm 30-125 watt Loaded Double 3-way speaker cabinet AND vintage 80's YAMAHA Model YPA-1000 old school 50x4 120x2 Amplifier professionally Installed under bench seat. Speaker wires are run for another set of speaker to sit on rear bench seat but I needed those speakers for another project. Pete Paulson SMOOTHIE Wheels with chrome police caps. 7x15 and 8x15. I sincerely hope Sammy goes to a good and loving home. If I were to keep her, I would probably put a four or five speed floor shifter in it and install an aftermarket power steering kit w/dampener. There are some small misc spots of surface rust only as seen in pics. NOTHING detrimental. The notorious wing windows are inoperable. I'm sure I've forgotten lot's of things but I'm positive it's nothing negative. I have bought and sold over 50 vintage cars and motorcycles on ebay and while I did not always get what was described, my customers definately have. Never had any dissapointments. I can be contacted most anytime at 717-319-8007. Security deposit required withing 48 hrs of auction close with Balance due in 10 days of completed auction. [email protected] 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport LS6 Documented Restored Numbers Matching Chevelle SS LS6 454/450 HP V8 TH400 Year: 1970 Type of vehicle title: Clear Primary color: Gray Mileage: 47 Transmission type: 3 Speed Automatic Engine: 454 LS6 V8 Interior color: Black Vehicle Info If you grew up around cars, "LS6" was probably one of those terms that, alongside "Hemi" and "Super Cobra Jet", meant something very special long before you could properly define it. Thankfully, the significance of those names only grows with education, making cars like this numbers-matching Chevelle Super Sport all the more desirable. Serving just two owners during its 44 year career, and scoring 987 out of 1001 points at the National Chevelle Owner's Association Show, this clean A-body is the beneficiary of an extensive, professional restoration that enabled better-than-factory glory. And, backed by a loyal Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed and all-important options such as an F41 suspension and power front disc and rear drum brakes, it's obvious the car's original buyer knew exactly what boxes to check. If you're ready to add one of the most sought after muscle cars in the world to your collection, this awesome SS LS6 will pay you back time and time again! Hailing from the general's storied Atlanta manufacturing facility, and featured extensively in Year One parts catalogs, this stunning Super Sport is the beneficiary of a body-off, rotisserie restoration that included new GM quarters and fresh GM fenders. In 1995, the car's current owners coordinated hours of professional metalwork that resulted in a super straight profile. Of course, being lovingly driven and rebuilt to resto-mod status circa 1990, this awesome Chevy was already solid and exceptionally well-kept. That clean presentation was layered in correct Shadow Gray base, accented with Tuxedo Black rally stripes and sealed in glossy clear. And today, only 30 miles after its roof-to-rocker makeover, this top dog coupe sits as one spectacular piece of iconic American muscle that's detailed to award-winning standards. Many enthusiasts believe the '70 Chevelle introduced a host of excellent refinements which transformed the 'good' design of Chevrolet's 1969 model into something 'great'. At the front of this monotone menace, a familiar crossbar grille hangs a prominent "SS" emblem between authentic T3s, a small "CHEVELLE" script and a broad chrome bumper. Above that bumper, a functional cowl induction hood anchors new glass between traditional lanyards, pristine window trim and a clean greenhouse that's factory-coded as Tuxedo Black. At the base of that greenhouse, bright "SS454" badges combine with straight wheel frames, traditional door handles and flashy chrome mirrors to add visual detail to the car's liquid-smooth profile. And at the back of that profile, a second chrome bumper centers a black Super Sport inlay between clear brake lamps, a classy "Chevelle by Chevrolet" script and spotless stainless exhaust tips. Although the 1970 Super Sport's ferocious Turbo Fire V8 was conservatively rated at 450 horsepower, it actually punched the dyno somewhere north of 500. And, despite being swapped for a thrifty 327 by the car's first owner, this classic's original LS6 remained close to its rightful home. Engage the hood's Shadow Gray springs and you'll find a correct cowl induction system that's cleanly integrated into a completely finished, Satin Black frame. At the center of that frame, a correctly decaled, single-snorkel air cleaner forces oxygen into a big Holley carburetor and low-rise Corvette intake. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor snakes sparks around a correct 3963512 casting number and November (K) 7th (7), 1969 (9) casting date via high quality Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, a correct LS6 cam, correct exhaust manifolds and old school emissions hardware add value and exclusivity. And in front of that hardware, GM hoses channel water past a matching partial VIN and correct "CRR" suffix stamp with the help of a replacement radiator and old school tower clamps. During the car's extensive restoration, the big Chevy was completely overhauled by the pros at Sonny Heck's Automotive. And, from its fresh Delco battery and mirrored valve covers all the way to its stainless fluid lines and bright decals, the monster mill looks much nicer than anything that left GM's factories. Naturally, this coupe's road-ready chassis has been restored to the same high standards as the aforementioned body panels and engine compartment. A nice coat of Satin Black paint provides a great foundation for a slew of factory-accurate details. Behind the stout big block, a CY-coded Turbo-Hydramatic 400 3-speed sends power to a correct posi-traction rear end that's equipped with meaty, 4.10 gears. Holding that killer drivetrain off the ground is a completely restored F41 heavy duty performance suspension that's equipped with thicker coils, heavy duty shocks, a larger diameter front sway bar, a standard rear sway bar, boxed rear control arms and beefy cross braces. At the corners of that suspension, power front disc and rear drum brakes provide greatly improved stops. Between those brakes, fried dinosaurs travel through a fresh, true-dual exhaust system that's complete with factory replacement mufflers. The 454's power flows through 14-inch Super Sport wheels, which spin old school F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas Custom Wide Treads around correct SS center caps. And, as expected, the bottom of this Chevelle is pristine in every way, with every square inch of the car's fully-sorted hardware completely detailed for show. Featuring a host of new components, and decked in what is arguably the best color offered for the 1970 model year, this Chevelle's correctly restored interior is inviting and comfortable. Its slick bench and bucket seats are firm to the touch, showing no signs of detrimental wear and tear. In front of those seats, a crack-free dash, restored by Just Dashes in Van Nuys, California, features a full set of gauges. Below that dash, clean carpet centers a full console and correct horseshoe shifter between bright Fisher sills. At the sides of that carpet, pick-free door panels align spotless stainless trim and prerequisite "SS" emblems on bright chrome handles and pliable black armrests. In front of the driver, a handsome Chevrolet Rally Wheel keeps everything pointed straight. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk anchors a correct jack and full-size spare beneath an optional rear window defogger. The sale of this shadowy Chevy includes: an original Owner's Manual, a Certificate of Participation for the Minneapolis Aquatennial and Milestone Car Society Concours d'Elegance, judging sheets from the National Chevelle Owners Association, restoration photos, restoration receipts and maintenance notes. Overall, this numbers-matching coupe is the total package. With a king-of-the-mountain LS6, correct Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed and every option that allowed these cars to develop such stellar reputations, this was a bragging rights car in its day and perhaps even more so now. If you're ready for some fresh firepower in your automotive arsenal, don't miss the chance to take home this awesome Chevelle Super Sport! Just some facts and tid bits for your viewing the following provided by google/wikipediaThe 1957 Chevrolet is a car which was introduced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors in September, 1956. It was available in three series models: the upscale Bel Air, the mid-range "two-ten", and the "one-fifty". A two-door station wagon, the Nomad was produced as a Bel Air model. An upscale trim option called the "Delray" was available for two-ten 2-door sedans. It is a popular and sought after classic car. These vehicles are often restored to their original condition and sometimes modified. The car's image has been frequently used in toys, graphics, music, movies and television. The '57 Chevy, as it is often known, is an auto icon.[ Initially, General Motors executives wanted an entirely new car for 1957, but production delays necessitated the 1955–56 design for one more year. Ed Cole, chief engineer for Chevrolet, dictated a series of changes that significantly increased the cost of the car. These changes included a new dashboard, sealed cowl, and the relocation of air ducts to the headlight pods, which resulted in the distinctive chrome headlight that helped make the '57 Chevrolet a classic. Fourteen-inch wheels replaced the fifteen-inch wheels from previous years to give the car a lower stance, and a wide grille was used to give the car a wider look from the front. The now famous '57 Chevrolet tailfins were designed to duplicate the wide look in the rear. Bel Air models were given gold trim: the grille, front fender chevrons, hood, and trunk script were all rendered in anodized gold. The 1957 Chevrolets did not have an oil pressure gauge or a voltmeter.[1] The base engine was an inline 6-cylinder called the Blue Flame Six. The engine was smoother running than the V-8. Carburetion came from a single one-barrel carburetor Body choices for 1957 included 2- and 4-door sedans (identified by the "posts" between door windows), the two-door Sport Coupé (also known as a two-door hardtop; the car has no post between the front and back window when the windows are lowered), the Sport Sedan (also known as a four-door hardtop), the two-door Utility Sedan, a two-door sedan with a package shelf instead of a rear seat, the Delray "club coupe", which was a 210 model 2-door sedan with a de luxe interior, two styles of two-door station wagon, the top-of-the-line Bel Air Nomad with a sloped pillar behind the hardtop door and sliding windows at the rear seat, and the basic Handyman with an upright sedan B-pillar and a C-pillar, where the four-door wagons have one, available only in 150 and 210 trims. The four-door, six-passenger station wagon, the four-door, nine-passenger station wagon (both called Townsman in the 150 series and Beauville for the Bel Air version), and the convertible. Unlike most competitors, the Chevrolet 4-door hardtop featured a reinforced rear roof structure that gave the car added rigidity and a unique appearance in silhouette. The 1957 Chevrolet was called by some a "Baby Cadillac", because of many similar styling cues to Cadillacs of the time. V8-optioned cars got a large gold "V" under the Chevrolet script on the hood and trunk lid. There were many options available, most of which were designed to make the car more comfortable and luxurious. Air conditioning was offered though rarely ordered, as was a padded dash. Power steering and power brakes were available, as well as a signal-seeking AM[4] radio and power antenna. Power windows and power seats were also available. A rear speaker could be purchased which required a separate volume knob to be installed in the dashboard, beside the radio — this rear speaker was touted as providing "surround" sound. An "autotronic eye" was offered; it was a device that bolted onto the dashboard and sensed the light from oncoming traffic, dimming the headlights automatically.[5] One unique option was an electronic shaver, connected to the dashboard.[6] The ‘57 radio used tubes that required only 12 volts of plate voltage and a transistor for the output stage. This lowered the power drain on the battery to an insignificant amount when the engine was off. Playing the radio with conventional tubes for extended periods occasionally drained the battery to the extent that it could not start the car. The clock was electrically self-wound and moving the hands to correct the time resulted in actually regulating the going rate. After a few corrections, the clock was remarkably accurate. Another dashboard-mounted item was the traffic-light viewer, a ribbed plastic visor that was installed just above the speedometer. Because the roof extends so far forward of the driver, it is hard to see overhead traffic lights. The traffic light viewer captured the reflection of overhead traffic lights so that the driver didn't have to lean forward to see past the edge of the roof. A/C was also an option.[7] In 1957, Chevrolet started to add safety features such as "crash proof door locks[8] "(first added in 1956), padded dash boards, safety-styled steering wheel with a recessed hub[9] (though not as much as Ford's), seat belts(also first in 1956[10]) and shoulder harnesses.[11][12] However, unlike Ford, Chevrolet did not promote these safety features heavily. 1957 was also Chevrolet's first offering of a turbine transmission, known as the Turboglide. It was a design concept that Buick had developed with their Dynaflow transmission. However, due to a reliability reputation caused by its complexity, most automatic transmission buyers shunned the Turboglide in favor of the two-speed Powerglide that had been offered since 1950. At the time the Turboglide casing was the largest cast aluminum component ever put into mass production, but it never recovered from the reputation in 1957 and the option was discontinued in 1961. Manual transmissions were limited to three-speed, column shifted units (with synchromesh in second and third gear only). The Powerglide's shifter went P N D L R while the Turboglide's was P R N D Hr (although the 'Hr' was changed early in the production series to 'Gr'-Grade Retarder because of drivers' mistaken belief that 'Hr' meant High Range instead of the correct Hill Retarder.) .[13][14] An overdrive unit was available as an option on the three speed manually shifted transmission cars. A four speed manual transmission was also offered at a price of $188.00 as a dealer installed only option. A '57 equipped with this transmission mated to the 270 horsepower engine and limited slip differential was the one to beat on the drag strip and street into the early 1960s. From a numbers standpoint, the '57 Chevrolet wasn't as popular as General Motors had hoped. Despite its popularity, rival Ford outsold Chevrolet for the 1957 model year for the first time since 1935. The main cause of the sales shift to Ford was the fact the '57 Chevrolet had tubeless tires, the first car to have them. This scared away sales to Ford as many people did not initially trust the new tubeless design. Also Ford's introduction of an all-new body styling that was longer, lower, and wider than the previous year's offerings helped Ford sales.[15] However, the 1957 Ford — with the exception of the rare retractable hardtop model — is not nearly as prized by collectors today as the 1957 Chevrolet. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the '57 Chevrolet was a popular used car and highly prized "street machine" or hot rod in 1957 terms. It was the final year of the "shoebox" Chevrolet, as 1958 saw the introduction of a much larger and heavier "X" framed Chevrolet. The ideal size of the '57, combined with its relatively light weight compared to newer full-sized cars, made it a favorite among drag racers. The engine bay was big enough to fit GM's big-block engines, first introduced in 1958 and popularized in the 1960s by the Beach Boys in the song "409". The relatively simple mechanical attributes of the car made it easy to maintain, customize, and upgrade with components such as disc brakes and air conditioning. The big block, however, was not what put the '57 on the map on the street scene; it was the introduction and the over-the-counter, low-priced availability of the small block, 365 horsepower 327 in 1962 that was the blockbuster that made both the '55 and '57 Chevrolet able to beat the Ford hotrods with their flathead V8s. This was a major turning point in American hot rodding: Chevrolet had claimed the street scene from Ford. The '57 Chevrolet also won 49 Grand National "cup" NASCAR races (the most of any car in NASCAR history), won the Southern 500 (in 1957, 1958, and 1959); becoming the only car to win the 500 three times. The earliest victory for a '57 Chevrolet in a titled NASCAR Grand National Series race was the 1957 Virginia 500; a race that was shortened due to an extremely flagrant accident. The '57 also won 25 NASCAR convertible races, more than any car and won all three possible drivers championships. The first in convertible class and winning car in the 1959 Daytona 500 was a 57 driven by Joe Lee Johnson. That would make it actually 26 wins. The convertables were started on the outside row and were approx. 10 miles an hour slower than the hardtops and sedans because of aero dynamics. No one figured that a convertible would win the race and they didn't but who was the top finishing convertible? With the 283 engine placed from the factory behind the centerline of the front wheels made the '57 a superior handling car on the short tracks and the dirt tracks as well. This mechanical advantage, coupled with a high reving reliable 283 earned the '57 the nickname "king of the short tracks". With the fuel injected 283, the 150 model two door sedan version, called the "black widow", was the first car that was outlawed (and quickly so) by NASCAR as it proved almost unbeatable on virtually all the NASCAR tracks in early 1957. After the '57 was grandfathered out from the now "cup" division in 1960 and relegated to the lower local track sportsman divisions they were the car to beat for years. The '57's subsequently were used up in stock car racing at a very high rate. Surprisingly enough, the '57 Chevrolet also won a disproportionate amount of demolition derbies as well: With the radiator set back from the grille, the car was difficult to disable. The additional advantage of having the last double lined trunk, coupled with a strong frame, made it a surprisingly common winner in the demolition derbies during the late 1960s and early 1970s. By the 1970s, the '57 Chevrolet became a collector car. Companies such as Danchuk Manufacturing, Inc. and Classic Chevy Club International began selling reproduction and restoration parts. In the early 1990s, the value of meticulously restored '57 Chevrolet convertibles was as high as $100,000. Though those peaks gave way significantly after 1992, the '57 Chevrolet has held its value and now is poised to exceed the previous peak. Restored, original examples are increasingly rare, and modern customizers and restorers are creating fast, powerful, ultra-modern hot rods that are winning the '57 Chevrolet a whole new generation of fans. Fiberglass and all-steel reproductions are making it possible for future generations to enjoy the '57 Chevrolet as original cars become harder to find.
