And what a design it was, especially within the walls of a company that had in its 30-year history built nothing but cars with a small engine placed behind the driver. But if America was the target market, a front-engined, rear-wheel-drive V8 Grand Touring car certainly made sense. The 928 debuted in March 1977 at the Geneva Auto Show, and while Porsche purists bristled at the thought of such a pedestrian layout, the new car received much acclaim. The $28,000 928 borrowed no parts from other Porsches, and its shape was like nothing else--a futuristic design with a low, wide stance, a long, sloping hood, a sharp nose, and an evenly rounded rump. "Telephone dial" wheels completed the package. At the time, design head Tony Lapine stated that "a car which is liked immediately will not hold up over time." Porsche had designed a long shelf life into its latest creation, and at the same time had handsomely incorporated 5-mph safety bumpers front and rear. The body made use of collapsible polyurethane pieces over front and rear hidden bumpers, with aluminum doors, hood, and front fenders, and steel for the remaining panels. Though now commonplace, at the time, trying to coat such differing materials with a uniform paint job was a feat of ingenuity. Beneath the handsome and complicated skin lay an advanced and well-balanced powertrain. A 90-degree, all-aluminum, 16-valve, 4.5-liter V8 with Bosch Continuous Injection System (CIS) fuel delivery produced 219 hp and 254 ft-lb of torque. It was mated to a fully synchronized rear transaxle with either a 5-speed manual or optional 3-speed automatic, and weight distribution was nearly perfect at 51%/49%, front to rear. Suspension was fully independent all around, and Porsche worked hard to perfect the 928's rear suspension, which would allow it to accommodate over-aggressive drivers without the erratic tendencies of snap oversteer. The resulting "Weissach Axle" was an engineering breakthrough, a multi-link setup that made the 928 one of the best handlers in the world. The cabin was nothing short of plush, with supportive leather seats, an ingenious tilt steering/instrument binnacle, and all the comforts of a true luxury GT. And it could move, too, with 0 to 60 mph coming in just over 7 seconds, with a top speed over 135 mph. By the time the 4.7-liter 928 S arrived in 1983, the car was rated at 146 mph, making it the fastest in America. Displacement, power, and top speed increased as production continued, with a 5.0-liter appearing in 1985, as well as revised brake and suspension components and a 4-speed automatic to replace the 3-speed. A 928 S4 debuted in 1987, now with 316 hp, and a 928 GT entered the fold in 1989, complete with a limited-slip differential and available only with a 5-speed. The 928 GTS replaced both the S4 and GT for 1993. It featured freshened bodywork and a bigger 5.4-liter engine now putting out 345 hp and capable of 170 mph. It also cost nearly $85,000. By this time, the 928 had practically disappeared from the American market. Sales had fallen dramatically, and Porsche redoubled its efforts on the 911, which had weathered the regulatory storm mostly unscathed. In all nearly 61,000 928s were built during the car's 17-year tenure. All the regular maintenance has been performed. Mechanics No known issues. The car runs good. Smooth idle, no smoke, no odd noises or clunks, no leaks. Good acceleration and performance. The car was maintained by Powertech in Rockaway, New Jersey where the timing belt and water pump were replaced in October of 2012. Body The car has not suffered any severe damage. The previous owner said there were two minor accidents requiring body work. The rear bumper was replaced with new from one mishap and the left RQP had some minor work and paint in another. The repairs were done professionally leaving no trace of repairs. In October 2013 I had the rear quarter windows and rubber seals replaced along with the windshield. The windshield was showing some slight pitting and the rear quarter windows had some spots that would not come off. The rear section from the door back were repainted along with the front and rear bumpers which had some dings. The work was done by Sports Car Collision in Ferndale Michigan, one of the best body shops in the country. The paint match was spot on and the work looks great. The rest of the body and paint is in good shape for a 20 year old car. It’s not perfect but still has a great shine. On a scale of 1-10 I’d give it a 7. Hatch struts work fine. Front spoiler is not cracked or broken. Interior No tears or cracks in any of the leather. Leather is still soft and looks great. No cracks in the dash. There’s a screw hole in the side of the console where the PO mounted an early cell phone but it’s not too noticeable. The luggage cover is starting to fade but the elastic is still good. The carpet is in good shape with no stains but it is starting to look old. There’s one of those tube subwoofers and an amp mounted on the rear deck. It sounds good but takes up space. It has Pioneer speakers which all work fine. All the interior lights work as they should. The new Clarion NX503 has rear camera capability but there is no camera. I like this 93 GTS and would keep it but my expanding business leaves no room to keep it or time to enjoy driving it. I have a 1991 928 S4 that I plan to keep and tinker with. I’ve tried to be upfront on the condition of the car but I’m sure they’ll be questions. Title PCA (Porsche Club of America) Member Owned No Accidents 2-Owners Certificate of Authenticity By the time the GTS was launched, the 928 was ending its 17-year production run. As a result, the GTS cars benefited from all the previous development. These 928s were truly the best of the best. Unfortunately, only a mere 407 examples made it to the U.S. from 1993 to 1995. Of those, less than half were equipped with a manual gearbox. These 928s were made of aluminum including the engine. This 5.4L motor put out 345hp and 369 lb ft of torque. The GTS models were well equipped and expensive. This particular example had an MSRP of nearly $95,000 (approximately $153,000 in today’s dollars)! This first owner was a long-time executive for Coca Cola in Atlanta, GA. He custom ordered the car with specific options and colors, which included the following: Paint to sample metallic paint Supple leather seats Remote CD Changer Electric sliding sunroof Increased air conditioning Protective side moldings AM/FM radio w/cassette Black floor mats Carpet deviating color (Magenta)* Yokohama tires *Note: the interior carpet looks less bright than in the pictures and is more of a purple hue. Everyone has commented how much better it looks in person* Due to the special color combination, the order was delayed over a month. Then, the dealer installed the executive package, which included a mobile phone, Lojack, and K40 integrated radar detector. Nothing has been removed and the car remains as delivered new. These owners truly pampered this 928. No service was ever missed and it was always garaged. All of their services were performed by their local Porsche dealership. 10-years later, they retired to Arizona and brought the car with them. Shortly thereafter, they sold it to the current owner. He is a Southern California vintage car enthusiast who had been searching for a unique and pristine GTS for years. He bought this one in December of 2003 with almost 33,000 original miles. For the next decade and 20k+ miles, this owner did everything to make this one of the best 928 GTS examples in North America. Describing him as fanatical is putting it lightly. If anything made a strange sound or he didn’t think it was right, he would spend countless dollars correcting it. Some highlights of significant repairs/enhancements include: Top-end engine rebuild including heads and valves (over $8,000) Replaced synchros in gearbox (over $6,000) Custom header and complete exhaust system (over $10,000) Rebuilt torque tube Shark tuned chip (original chips included) New clutch, pressure plate, and resurfaced flywheel New H4 headlights Rebuilt original steering rack Repair A/C Timing belt and water pump (at 34k miles) New Michelin tires All in all, the current owner invested over $33,000 maintaining and improving this rare GTS. Greg Brown of Precision Motorwerks in Anaheim, CA (one of the top Porsche 928 specialists in the country) performed all of the work for the current owner. He used this car to develop a custom exhaust system that produced an additional 23hp and 12lb ft torque. The car is even included in the promotional poster produced by Porsche (included/see pics). As you can imagine, everything about this Porsche’s condition is remarkable. The exterior looks fantastic. There are very few signs of wear. The special ordered Zermatt silver paint looks more like the original Porsche silver of the 70’s. It has that very fine metallic look to it. The wheels are near perfect and are wearing new Michelin tires. The underside is just as shiny and clean as the top (see pic with protective covers removed). The interior is equally as immaculate. The leather is soft with no tears and minimal signs of use. There are no stains or strange odors. The dash is perfect with no cracks or warping. Most of the interior is wrapped in leather (except for the dash). The carpet is plush and looks like new. Everything works properly including the factory radio, A/C, and clock (very rare). Naturally, the best part about this 928 is the way it drives. It feels like new. It has tremendous power and shifts with ease. The suspension/handling is very crisp. This GTS needs nothing and is ready to be driven or shown. California registration is paid through December 2014 This Porsche comes complete with all the owner’s manuals/books and cover, extra key/s, tool kit, spare, jack, certificate of authenticity, Family Tree posters, most records from new, and 928 history documents. Title PCA (Porsche Club of America) Member Owned No Accidents 2-Owners Certificate of Authenticity By the time the GTS was launched, the 928 was ending its 17-year production run. As a result, the GTS cars benefited from all the previous development. These 928s were truly the best of the best. Unfortunately, only a mere 407 examples made it to the U.S. from 1993 to 1995. Of those, less than half were equipped with a manual gearbox. These 928s were made of aluminum including the engine. This 5.4L motor put out 345hp and 369 lb ft of torque. The GTS models were well equipped and expensive. This particular example had an MSRP of nearly $95,000 (approximately $153,000 in today’s dollars)! This first owner was a long-time executive for Coca Cola in Atlanta, GA. He custom ordered the car with specific options and colors, which included the following: Paint to sample metallic paint Supple leather seats Remote CD Changer Electric sliding sunroof Increased air conditioning Protective side moldings AM/FM radio w/cassette Black floor mats Carpet deviating color (Magenta) Yokohama tires Due to the special color combination, the order was delayed over a month. Then, the dealer installed the executive package, which included a mobile phone, Lojack, and K40 integrated radar detector. Nothing has been removed and the car remains as delivered new. These owners truly pampered this 928. No service was ever missed and it was always garaged. All of their services were performed by their local Porsche dealership. 10-years later, they retired to Arizona and brought the car with them. Shortly thereafter, they sold it to the current owner. He is a Southern California vintage car enthusiast who had been searching for a unique and pristine GTS for years. He bought this one in December of 2003 with almost 33,000 original miles. For the next decade and 20k+ miles, this owner did everything to make this one of the best 928 GTS examples in North America. Describing him as fanatical is putting it lightly. If anything made a strange sound or he didn’t think it was right, he would spend countless dollars correcting it. Some highlights of significant repairs/enhancements include: Top-end engine rebuild including heads and valves (over $8,000) Replaced synchros in gearbox (over $6,000) Custom header and complete exhaust system (over $10,000) Rebuilt torque tube Shark tuned chip (original chips included) New clutch, pressure plate, and resurfaced flywheel New H4 headlights Rebuilt original steering rack Repair A/C Timing belt and water pump (at 34k miles) New Michelin tires All in all, the current owner invested over $33,000 maintaining and improving this rare GTS. Greg Brown of Precision Motorwerks in Anaheim, CA (one of the top Porsche 928 specialists in the country) performed all of the work for the current owner. He used this car to develop a custom exhaust system that produced an additional 23hp and 12lb ft torque. The car is even included in the promotional poster produced by Porsche (included/see pics). As you can imagine, everything about this Porsche’s condition is remarkable. The exterior looks fantastic. There are very few signs of wear. The special ordered Zermatt silver paint looks more like the original Porsche silver of the 70’s. It has that very fine metallic look to it. The wheels are near perfect and are wearing new Michelin tires. The underside is just as shiny and clean as the top (see pic with protective covers removed). The interior is equally as immaculate. The leather is soft with no tears and minimal signs of use. There are no stains or strange odors. The dash is perfect with no cracks or warping. Most of the interior is wrapped in leather (except for the dash). The carpet is plush and looks like new. Everything works properly including the factory radio, A/C, and clock (very rare). Naturally, the best part about this 928 is the way it drives. It feels like new. It has tremendous power and shifts with ease. The suspension/handling is very crisp. This GTS needs nothing and is ready to be driven or shown. California registration is paid through December 2014 This Porsche comes complete with all the owner’s manuals/books and cover, extra key/s, tool kit, spare, jack, certificate of authenticity, Family Tree posters, most records from new, and 928 history documents. It had low miles but was parked outside in the Florida sun, so paint was faded, dash was cracked and hatch carpet is worn. I removed the dash and had it recovered in leather. I got a quote for replacing the rear carpet but this is the only thing that I did not get around to (see photos of carpet). Recent maintenance: All new Gates belts and rollers, cam chain tensioner pads, timing chain, valve cover gaskets (1/5/15) New Yokohama S-Drive Tires (2/17/15) New brake pads and rotors, front and back (1/5/15) New euro front blinkers Replaced stock seats with seats out of a 2013 Cayman (I still have the stock seats to go with the car, if desired), and wired electrical to work correctly Leather dash (Removed dash and had top recovered in leather) Full re-spray at a shop that knows these cars, so had all new rubber seals replaced as well. Paint looks like new. Fluids changed: oil, brake fluid, and coolant (1/5/15) Design 1 Racing short shift kit I have a clean CarFax that I can provide, and recently passed California SMOG. Has the clear power steering reservoir, which is very rare. I have original books and leather cover, and 2 keys. AC blows very cold, actually colder than my other 968 for some reason that I would like to figure out.
