Behold! The legendary Honda Civic. This is for a four-door, automatic 1994 Honda Civic. I had long intended to take this car to her grave, but alas, I am moving to a place with no parking and lots of subways, so she must go. Who wants, nay, needs this venerable beast? This Civic, though her body be scarred from a glorious and storied past, is essentially invincible to all manners of abuse, resistant to aging as if enchanted by warlock, intensely reliable, and requires minimal maintenance. WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?- A teen's first car. - A low gas milage go-mobile for frequent commuters- That glorious road trip you meant to take, but didn't want to put the miles on a car of greater value/lesser fortitude- Competing in the "LeMons" races https://www.24hoursoflemons.com- Sacrificing to Mythbusters-like science - Racing??- Anyone who needs an affordable, reliable car now! Down to brass tacks. WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THIS CAR: - At it's age, you pretty much give it oil and change it's tires. And the tires are good right now. - Engine is a beast. It has never, ever had a fundamental engine problem. - Recently (past few years) replaced timing belt, water pump, radiator, radiator hoses. - Still fuel efficient for its age (estimated 33MPG highway, 25 city). - Heat works well. - Automatic windows work, including driver's side control panel for all windows. - Cruise control still works, which actually blows even MY mind. - Surprising ability to accelerate. Grandma's got gas. - A turning radius that would make a prancing drag queen jealous - In many states, this car will qualify for "classic" tags in 2019, which is absurd, and will really upset actual car enthusiasts when you take it to competitions. WHAT'S OBVIOUSLY WRONG ABOUT IT:I mean, it's got problems - it's important to be realistic about a long-term relationship, which is what you can still have with this 21-year-old car, because it's will to live is a force of nature: - AC is out. It's been out for eight years, but remember how great those windows work. - Power steering is going. It's a good core workout. I can still parallel park it and I am a 5'4" woman. Are you weaker than a 5' 4" woman? If not, then you will be excellent at driving this car. - Passenger side seatbelt doesn't work so you'll either want to fix it, or put anything you love and cherish in the back. - Passenger side interior door handle and window control look broken, but they work. They're just ugly. You'll find yourself getting over that quickly though, in favor of this car's unassailable work ethic, dependability, and pure heart. - There's not a stereo, but there's a place for one to go, so that you can get one that you really, really like. Or just turn up the speaker on your cellphone, because you are a gangsta. - Body damage. What you see in the photos is what you get. Each one has a story - a beautiful, touching tale which I am happy to share with you on request. You can also make the car even more your own by fabricating your own tales of how she obtained these scars. This is called "bonding". - No muffler. My husband had a similar '97 civic to which someone had added a high-end aftermarket muffler. Our cars made the exact same sounds, except his were expensive and mine are free. - Horn is out. This is seriously the worst part. However, I have become much better at hurling curses. WHAT IS THIS CAR'S HISTORY?You need only look at her sweet bod to see most of that. Her milage is around 215,000, or something. Does it matter after that point? Yes, because Civics can surpass 300,000 miles! Why, she's just hitting her stride. This car was excellently taken care of in her early life by her previous owner, my father's boss and friend of the family. Then she was sold to a twenty-year-old me eleven years ago. There was, we'll call it a dark period in her life. Then, around age twenty five, I realized that she deserved better. I apologized to her and started taking her in for regular maintenance again. As mentioned, several of her parts have been replaced recently as part of typical maintenance. From Coastal Georgia and SC, I have travelled to San Antonio thrice, San Diego and back once, and New York and back once. She has frequently made the trip - I mean on average once a month - from the coast up to Charlotte, NC for the past ten years. Not once - not once, friends - has she left me on the side of the road. I had even - and I am not proud of this dear readers - in my younger years, found her oil well utterly dry, in need of two quarts to even register, and not a peep from her. I would like to point out here that most cars seize without oil instantly. My army husband says that their Blackhawks are built to run for like thirty minutes without oil in case the helicopter is shot. Tis Civic has gone for days. She's not going to throw a rod, unless it's at the spectre of Death as she zooms on by, laughing in it's face. This Civic has not been shot, but I doubt that it would change anything if she was.
