Looking for a classic Jeep Cherokee "XJ" that's stock, unmolested, well maintained and doesn't have a ton of miles on it? Here's a 96 for your consideration. More popular now than ever, this original style Jeep is available for a new owner. Back before all cars and SUVs started to look the same Jeep offered the unmistakeable Cherokee. This is a 2-Owner ( I am the 2nd) Auto Check/CarFax certified southern owned Cherokee in the top line Country package. It was the last model year of this style, and the first year for the Stone White color. The pictures speak for themselves, and I venture to say it's one of the nicest 85-96 style XJ's available. This has been a daily driver to and from work for my short 1/2 mile commute. Has just 98,000 original miles! You can tell a lot about how a vehicle has been treated by the shape it's in. This one is remarkably rust-free, even on the pinch welds, unibody, and door jams. Original paint, & no accidents known. The metal bumpers and front air dam aren't banged up or caved in as you may frequently find. Just a few typical rock chips or light scratches. No "wobbles" when you hit the brakes. The front end is nice and tight. Has various new bushings up front and new Monroe Sensa-Tracs all around. No cheapo mismatched tires on this one, all Michelin LTX white letter tires with plenty of tread life to go. As you can see in the pics the engine bay is very clean with many original stickers and engine block markings. The 4.0 high output I-6 has gobs of power. The reliable AW4 automatic overdrive transmission shifts quick and smooth. The Command-Trac 4x4 system slides in and out of engagement without issue. With upkeep and care these classic Cherokees will go 300k easy. This Jeep never left me stranded during this past snowy mid-atlantic winter. This has not been a tow vehicle or family beater. It is not equipped with a tow package so it has not been used for such hard duty. I'm a non-smoker. The interior has a fresh "new car/leather" type scent, devoid of weird odors. Carpets are clean. Spare tire appears to have never been used and is the compact design leaving more cargo space. Windows are tinted all around, and the factory cargo area cover (not pictured) will come with it. Gaskets, grommets, & glass are all in tact. - A/C cold ( just tested it on a recent warm day) & Heat hot - Factory equipped keyless entry works!! (one fob and 3 keys) - Luxury leather seat package (very comfy) - 6 way power driver seat - Have a copy of the original build sheet from Jeep (late build date 7/96) - Door edge guards still present - All power windows/locks work - A turn key Jeep! A lot of recent updates and maintenance: - Fresh oil change - New Pioneer speakers all around - Heavy duty battery - Drive belt - Front sway bar bushings and end links - Monroe Sensa Trac shocks - O2 sensors upstream & downstream - Crank position sensor (wasn't bad just preventative) - Idle air control sensor (was dirty so I replaced) - Front wheel bearings - Fuel filter - Front and rear dif service complete - Muffler Basically, a lot of stuff that a new owner doesn't have to do right away, and who wants that when buying a used car? With all that said, I am not implying this is a "new" car or "mint" as some people tend to embellish, but it is in well above average condition for its age and miles. There are a few things to note: - Cruise control works but can be finiky to engage. Could be something simple, I'm not sure (I will show the new owner some ways to activate) - Headliner sags in a few spots. I already had the rear speaker sound bar professionally redone because the fabric had started to come down. - There is a paint rub on one rear bumper caps (pictured) and a couple on the driver side rear fender flare. - The driver seat has light wear and 2 small 1/2 inch tears in the leather around the bolster. - The small hose that connects the rear wiper washer fluid to the tailgate broke (the wiper itself works fine) - A couple door dings and rock chips as can be expected As I mentioned, this is a relisting due to a non-paying prior bidder. Available again with less than 400 additional miles! Last month I was high bidder in a popular eBay auction for this '96 Moss Green Jeep Cherokee. I had been searching since mid-March for a low-mileage, rust-free, five-speed XJ and, according to the description and 100 photographs on eBay, this was it. Representation and reality, however, are not necessarily one and the same, and this Cherokee once again finds itself on eBay. So that I can provide you with the most comprehensive and truthful description of this vehicle, please: Read my description and view my photographs carefully. Then, if you are interested in making an offer (or even if you want to tell me that my Buy It Now price seems high) click on "Ask seller a question" and enter "more info." I will reply promptly. * 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ Sport, Rare Manual Transmission, Gorgeous Moss Green Pearl, ~98K Miles This 1996 Cherokee has an AutoCheck score of 56 with a similar-vehicle range of 13 to 37: zero accidents, zero title or odometer discrepancies, zero negative events. The transmission is a smooth-shifting five-speed manual with, according to the Philadelphia-based eBay dealer who sold it to me, a new clutch and pressure plate. Although the shifter knob is loose, the rubber boot is clean and crack-free. The paint is original; its overall finish is very handsome. On three of the four doors there are scratches that appear to have been caused by a key or some other sharp object; they have been traced with the correct-color touched-up paint (not by me). These scratches are not severe, but they can be seen whether or not someone points them out.* There are assorted lighter scratches in other areas appropriate to the vehicle's age and mileage. There are two minor hood defects, both filled in with touch-up paint. There is a very shallow (approximately 1.25" wide x .1" deep) dent on the lower portion of the front passenger door. Photos are available and will be sent promptly upon request. The roof's clear-coat shows the effects of weather and UV exposure, not only at the rear by the liftgate but pretty much across the entire surface.* The factory-installed protective cargo strips are peeling off;* the rack cross bars are slightly bent. There is a crack adjacent to the left-side liftgate hinge* (pre-'97 Cherokee liftgates are fiberglass). Since this vehicle has low mileage and is from a region where the sun shines only half the year, I suspect it was parked primarily outdoors. Were I to keep this Cherokee I would remove the rubber strips, sand the surface smooth, and apply new paint or another coating. The interior of this Jeep is odor-free save for the aroma of black spray paint and brush-on undercoating recently applied (not by me) to the undercarriage. There is no indication of cigarette-smoker use. The carpeting is original and very clean; there is no damp-carpet-caused rust around the seat bases. The upholstery is original and, except for a few stained areas* (that can probably be shampooed out), looks good. The dashboard has no cracks. (There are two small patches of residual adhesive foam, probably from a stick-on accessory holder.) The door panels and headliner are secure and look good; the glove-box door latches properly. The center-console lid is a bit rickety, but only because it is missing two screws. The driver's door-check bracket is worn where the pin sits; a replacement is available on eBay for $10. The original Jeep owner's manual is included. The power door locks do not work; this may merely be a fuse or relay problem, and I will gladly check for power if asked. There is a 15”-high by .75”-wide scrape on the outside of the front passenger-door window glass (perhaps caused by an abrasive object that got stuck between glass and squeegee).* The clip that retains the driver-door squeegee is detached at the rear; on the driver-side rear door the clip and squeegee are bowed outward,* allowing for water penetration. The power windows work well and all gauges seem to function as designed. The engine compartment is beautiful. The cooling system was, I was told by the dealer, recently flushed; the serpentine belt is new; all hoses appear sound and both cooling fans seem to work well. The hood-prop retaining clip is missing; it is available on eBay for $7. I am unaware of any fluid leaks, but will gladly check if asked. This vehicle has not been driven since I returned with it from Philadelphia and parked it at my home in Pittsburgh on May 3rd, so if leaks exist they should be apparent by now. The 4.0-liter I6 engine has lots of power: it starts immediately, accelerates powerfully, and maintains 75 mph quietly and effortlessly. My scheduled afternoon pickup was delayed by the dealer until after dark, so the only thing I could tell at first about my purchase (other than how it was described on eBay) was that it drove as well as I had hoped. And that I immediately got a headache from fresh-paint fumes. The AC compressor is, I was told by the dealer, new. It looks new. The system, however, blows warm air. The Dayton tires match but are not new; they appear to have between 5,000 and 8,000 miles on them. The driver-side front tire has damaged center tread, as if it rubbed against something rough for quite a while.* The full-size spare, which I have not inspected but will if asked, is under a very nice cover. This Cherokee tracks straight on the open road at highway speed, and brakes efficiently and true. The steering has minor play, appropriate to the mileage. I was told by the dealer that the brakes are new and that the hydraulics were recently bled. The undercarriage of this vehicle is a combination of healthy-looking sheet metal and components, recently applied spray-paint and rubber-undercoating, and rust that varies from inconsequential surface oxidation to rot. The passenger-side steering knuckle is very corroded, as is the rear drive shaft.* The anti-sway bar is a study in flaking rusty layers;* the bump-stop mounts are almost gone;* the brake lines appear to be corroded, although I did not test them for soundness;* there is at least one part of the cargo-area floor rusting through* (I chose not to push on it). The disc-brake shields are barely recognizable.* The area above where the left leaf-spring shackle attaches to the monocoque frame is severely rusted and ineptly half-covered (not by me) with brush-stabbed rubberized-undercoating.* The opposite-side shackle-attachment area is rusted to a lesser degree;* there has been no undercoating applied to conceal it. My Gino Vannelli cassettes sounded good through the original Jeep stereo. If I outbid you when this Cherokee was first listed from April 16 - 21, now is your chance for a second chance with full disclosure from a seller who has complied to the letter with eBay's written instructions: "Include details that may not be evident in your pictures, such as any dents or dings . . . ." Buy this Cherokee "NOW" for what I paid or, if my straightforward, honest description suggests it is worth less, send me your best offer. By all means feel free to ask me any questions. Should be easy to patch, I'd planned to over the summer if I'd kept the Jeep.Interior is well-worn. Back seat is dirty/stained from tool storage, and cargo area just has bedliner, no carpet. Front seats show cracking in the leather but are very comfortable and not torn up.Paint is mismatched black, easy fix with some gloss black spray paint (what the doors are done in).Overall, this is a perfect Jeep for someone that wants a semi-daily driver and weekend toy that will do great on the trails. 4wd works great, I've only used it twice in the past year (in the snow to get to work this winter) which is mainly why I'm selling it. I've put a ton of time, money (over 10k invested in upgrades and maintenance over 4 years), and effort into making sure I always went with the best quality parts that I could get.
