Burgundy BMW 1998 740i E38 Hello, I am selling my 1998 BMW 740i. I am going to try my best to describe this vehicle in three sections: History, Upgrades, and Issues. History: This car was bought in the summer of 2014 from my neighbor up the street. He was a retired army general and bought the car with very, very low millage. I believe it was around 10-20,000 miles. He drove it and took it in to the local shop and kept a log of the maintenance that was done on the car. At about 100,000 miles, I bought the car from him. Currently, the BMW has 127,497 miles on the clock. I would say that all the service records from the previous two owners are in the log. I, on the other had, preferred to actual do the oil changes myself and keep it in tip-top running condition. This car has a clean title. Upgrades: When I bought the car from my neighbor, the first thing that I had to do was change the headliner. I covered the pillars with a suede material and took the headliner into a shop so that they could properly cover the curvy areas on the headliner. Next, after a few thousand miles, I noticed that smoke was coming out of the exhaust. The culprit to this was the OSV (oil separator valve). Once this was changed, the car's engine has been running strong and flawless. Next, The tires were changed about 5,000 miles ago. They should have a nice amount of life left in them. Of course, the oil has been changed every 5-8,000 miles with Mobile 1 fully synthetic. Next, a rock flew in the windshield and cracked it on a visit up to Austin via I35. That was replaced. Furthermore, the ignition switch was changed. When I got the car, the key was able to turn 360 degrees inside the ignition. After replacing it, it is functioning as it should. The last upgrade that I did was to change out the ABS sensors on all 4 wheels. One day, I noticed that my odometer and MPG meters stopped working. After taking it to the dealer, they suggested that the ABS module needed to be replaced. After conducting my own independent research, I realized that the issues where the ABS sensors at the wheels. These were basically fried when I inspected them. After replacing them, I didn't have any issues. The vehicle ran like a dream. As of today, these are all the 'upgrades' and maintenance that have been done on the car. Issues: This car only has a few minor issues that I want to mention and be upfront about. (1) There is a nice dent on the front of the hood. Nothing to bad, but noticeable. (2) The chrome trim/seals that are located above the rear passenger and rear driver side need to be replaced. Again, not a hard job. (3) The glove box has some ghosts in it. Inside the glove box, there is a plastic cover that covers the locking mechanism. This plastic has some 'teeth' that holds the cable so that when you pull on the glove box lever, it is able to release the latch holding the box. Again, I was able to fix it, but still needs so adjusting. (4) The shocks for holding up the trunk lid might need to be replaced. Even though they hold the trunk when its all the way up, the trunk closes when its half way open. I am not sure if that is how it was meant to be. (5) ABS module needs to be bleed from the air. Problems 1-4 are not serious. Problem (5) is what I am not to happy about. When I took the car to the BMW dealer on i10 (there is a guy there who specializes in e38), I was told numerous times that the ABS module was the culprit to the odometer/MPG problem that I had earlier. I changed the ABS module with a similar one from another car and it didn't fix it. It was only after this that I tried to change the ABS sensors at the wheels. However, by changing the module, air was able to get into the module which then tripped the ABS and EPS light on the dash board. Also, when pressing the brakes, the brakes travel a unusual longer distance (due to this air). Conclusions: So when I plug in the OBD2 Reader, there are no codes, no SRS codes, nothing wrong except the ABS/EPS lights. To fix this, I believe that the car needs to be taken to the shop where they can bleed the air from the ABS Module. Once done, it will be in good condition. Driven by clean, pet-less, non-smokers. It will be your responsibility to pick up the car or meet somewhere in NW San Antonio. I will not pay for shipping. However, I can help with loading the car. Everything else runs great. 1998 BMW E38 740iL. This BMW is dark blue. Now before I get into everything that is in the car lets talk what’s wrong with the car. It needs a motor. The car was on the highway and without any warning, previous issues or noise the motor instantly stopped. No bang, no nothing, just stopped running. The car was taken to the shop and it turned out the timing chain decided to break. As far as what damaged it did is unknown, I just know that it needs another motor. This car has around 125,000 miles on it. The car has excellent service history. Recently it has new valve cover gaskets, new plugs, new factory battery, new thermostat, new clutch fan, new power steering lines. This car also has a complete new suspension installed using top of the line Ferrodo parts. Upper and lower control and thrust arms, steering arm, tie rods, actually everything. This car also has ceramic, drilled, slotted and vented front and rear disc brakes. I also installed new factory OEM ABS front and rear brake sensors at $165.00 each. The transmission shifts as smooth as the day it was new. The car drove like the day it was new until it broke. I also installed a DYNAVIN deck. 7” touch screen, Bluetooth, back up camera GPS. Please go to DYNAVIN.com and look at the N6-E39A deck. It sells for $1,049.00 This deck is very nice and works perfect. The interior of the car is also in good condition. Everything works except the rear passenger side window could use a new regulator. The sun/moon roof works perfect. The privacy blinds are all mint including the quarter windows and the rear window blind goes up and down smoothly. The car also has an M series factory steering wheel. I recently installed rear factory mud flaps. The tires are Goodyear Run Flats with lots of tread left. I recently moved to New Hampshire and the car just went through the NH state inspection and passed with flying colors. The car has been in California and Arizona its entire life until last year. Zero rust. The roof of the car just behind the sunroof has some clear coat fading, this should rub out. Other than a few typical very small door dinks the only thing wrong with the body is a very hard to see in the rear quarter panel behind the driver side rear wheel is a crease or long scratch. Once again it’s hard to see and difficult to see in the picture but its there. Overall this BMW is in good condition. With a new motor this would make a great car. Or if you need some great parts this would make one heck of a great parts car. Personally I don’t have the time to deal with it. So I must sell it. 1998 BMW 740il I recently purchased this vehicle as a back up to my Porsche 928S currently under restoration. Shortly after the purchase I heard the clanking noise from the right side of the engine and it was diagnosed with the timing chain tensioner need for replacement. I started the replacement process and completed half the procedure for replacement but as I am short on time completing the final phase of restoration on my Porsche 928S I decided to sell it as is. I estimate the repairs at this stage to be about $500.00 parts and labor included. The rest of the car is in great shape with a complete recent tune up and new low profile tires on 19 inch rims. In addition there are two monitors installed in both front head rests for rear passenger viewing. Also there are two dings in the rear trunk (see photos). The car is sold in AS IS condition with no return.
