This 1966 Chevrolet Chevy II Nova doesn't have that problem because it looks perfect for cruising, but when the time is right, this coupe has also got the power to prove it's the king of the streets. The crisp Nova body has always been popular with hot rodders. Chevrolet made these sleepers from the factory and that attitude has served it well right into modern times. Rendered in extremely slick, and fashionable metallic burnt orange paint, most folks take one look at the sleek lines and figure that it has to be customized, but the truth is, this is just the product of a quality restoration. Aside from the cowl induction hood and custom wheels, the rest of the car is original GM styling. Even most of the trim remains intact, including the rocker moldings, grille, and bright chrome bumpers front and rear. The black interior is so new that the carpet inserts are still in plastic wrap. The vinyl on the doors and bucket seats respect the original design, but there are also some cool upgrades throughout the rest of this Nova. The center console and glovebox have been polished to a mirror shine. The AM/FM knob-style radio might look vintage but it has an auxiliary jack to plug in modern tunes. The driver gets a grippy three-spoke Chevy sports steering wheel. Beyond that are the original gauges, but as you can tell from the pictures, those are far from the only readouts in this Nova. There are auxiliary gauges for power, water, and oil as well as a massive column-mounted tachometer, and they all are clear indicators that there is something special going on under the hood. One turn of the key will convince you that there is some serious power lurking. It's a 385 cubic-inch stroker V8 by Dart... Not Dart as in Mopar, but as in Dart Special High Performance. These are the people to turn to when you want a huge motor with near bulletproof build quality. But the performance upgrade doesn't end there. This Nova is full of goodies like MSD electronic ignition, Dart Sportsman heads, and a Magnum hydraulic flat tappet camshaft from Comp Cams. Besides the serious power, the engine bay has clearly been dressed for show with plenty of chrome on everything, from the hood hinges to the shock towers. Henry Leland, Lincoln's founder, was a perfectionist and the cars bearing his favorite president's name (yes, that's really how Lincoln got its name) were beautifully built and incredibly rugged machines that were more like road-going locomotives than mere automobiles. This handsome 1927 Lincoln Model L sedan is a wonderful survivor in mostly original condition and a wonderful introduction to owning a Full Classic automobile. There's something special about any car that hasn't been completely restored, but for one that's approaching 90 years old, it's downright remarkable. The black paint on this big sedan is quite a few years old, and as a result it's not perfect, so if you're expecting a concours shine, this isn't your car. On the other hand, with survivor type cars being the hottest thing on the market today, it signals that collectors are finally realizing that unrestored cars are artifacts worthy of preservation and that a few bumps and bruises are testament to history passing rather than defects. And with all that in mind, this Lincoln remains eminently impressive. All four doors fit with that fabulous solid-sounding "CHUNK" sound when you close them. There's a subtle cream-colored pinstripe to highlight the body moldings, including Lincoln's famous kick at the lower edge of the cowl, and the rear-mounted trunk gives it real presence. All the brightwork is nickel, not chrome (which didn't come along until about 1929) and as such as a soft gloss that is the result of time and hand polishing, another charming survivor feature you can't buy anywhere else. The hood ornament is also original and is a highly desirable collectible item. More remarkably, the interior is original, and that's a real feat. Wool broadcloth that shows very little wear and just minor signs of age remains comfortable enough for all-day touring and the understated look is exactly what Henry Leland had in mind. Function above form was his motto and it shows inside where you get a big, industrial-strength wooden steering wheel, simple but complete instrumentation, and lovely Edwardian hardware on the doors, again in polished nickel. The rear seats seem to show a little more wear than the front, perhaps the fronts have been re-stuffed with original horse hair, but the accommodations are still first class all the way. And out back there's a reasonably-sized trunk that's actually more useful than you'd think. The Lincoln's 385 cubic inch V8 was a marvel of '20s engineering. With a giant aluminum crankcase and detachable cylinder blocks and heads, it's surprisingly easy to service, although the quality of the parts means that doesn't need to happen all that often. It runs superbly, with a pleasing V8 grumble from the exhaust and big car torque to get all that sheetmetal moving. The famous Lincoln "whirlwind" air cleaner lives up top and it still runs its original distributor up front. The 3-speed manual transmission is non-synchronized, so you'll need to brush up on your double-clutching, and the brakes are mechanical, so they take a bit of effort, but both of those are features, not bugs, for guys who love these cars as I do. The undercarriage is mostly original with only a few new exhaust pieces and properly maintained hardware throughout and those big 21-inch wooden spoke wheels carry subtle blackwall tires for the perfect period look. The quality is tangible and the preservation is remarkable in this Lincoln. A charming Full Classic for a very reasonable price. A career engineer turned SCCA racer, Bell had acquired quite a reputation captaining brands like Japanese GT Cars, CarTech and the Bell Experimental Group. And that reputation, perpetuated through vast involvement in many different facets of automobilia, created plenty of contacts with top designers and engineers. Work primarily focused on creating athletic mechanicals that bettered the classic Cobra driving experience, and creating a cockpit that would actually sell to someone over average height. Ultimately, the build combined many high quality aftermarket components with a twin turbo V8, 11 custom cast parts and a slick Antiques & Collectibles composite body. And today, wearing a screaming coat of Bright Yellow urethane, the car rolls as a virtually timeless hot rod that looks like a 10 and drives like an 11! ENGINE Tilt the louvered hood and you'll find a professionally built Ford Windsor block that's been bored and stroked to 385 cubic inches. Churning 505 rear wheel horsepower into 540 lb./ft. of pavement-scorching torque, that proven mill wraps an Eagle crank, Eagle rods, forged JE pistons and a Crower hydraulic cam in a full array of track-ready ancillaries. Conical air cleaners whip 7.5 psi of wind through stainless, TIG-welded tubes and proven Garrett T4 turbochargers. Fossils flow from twin Pierburg pumps to 52 lb./hr. fuel injectors. At the top of the Cast Silver mill, billet throttle bodies front a custom Bell Experimental Group upper intake and Trick Flow lower intake. The aforementioned air and fuel make their way to aluminum Canfield cylinder heads, which hide Crower aluminum rockers and Crower hydraulic lifters under monochromatic valve covers. When those heads flood the cylinders, Electromotive TEC3 engine management sequences fire through high quality Electromotive coil packs. As combustion is sparked, resultant gases are jettisoned through waterjet-cut, Heliarc-welded headers into 3-inch, Mandrel-bent side pipes that were supplied by Burns Stainless. That combustion's cooling is provided by a custom Ron Davis radiator, which stores water in front of quick-spinning electric puller fans. And high quality componentry, like a MOCAL oil cooler, a Canton Road Race oil pan and TiAL wastegates, paints a concise representation of a very skilled, systematic approach to defining "the world's most high tech Cobra". DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION The best thing about this high quality, expertly built roadster is its ability to run circles around almost anything at the track. Take a look under the car and you'll find a rigid 2-inch square-tube frame that, in addition to providing 14-15K lb./ft. of deflection, places 57% of the car's weight over its rear axles. Numbers like that aren't mere coincidence, as Bell hired Ron Nash, the whiz formerly associated with Buick, Roush's Merkur program and Newman & Sharps Nissans, to design Project Mongoose's foundation.
