Expensive at introduction at $4000, almost the same as a Jaguar E-Type, it afforded entry into the world of Italian design and performance, i.e. “the Poor Man’s Ferrari”. It remained in production for almost 30 years, and until recently was Alfa’s last rear-wheel-drive car. The Spider was offered in three trim levels; the $20,500 Quadrifoglio Verde (“Four-Leaf Clover”, Alfa’s long-time good luck charm), the $17,000 Veloce, and the $14,000 entry-level Graduate. All were mechanically identical, with a five-speed and DOHC 2 liter under the hood; the differences were in the trim levels and materials. The Graduate made do with steel wheels and trim rings vs. (optional) alloys, vinyl roof and seats instead of cloth and leather, optional A/C, and manual-wind windows. Marketed to relate to the car Dustin Hoffman drove in 1967’s The Graduate (the movie that put Alfa “on the map” in the USA), it was a very popular model. After a naming contest which drew over 100,000 entries, the name that was selected presented legal copyright issues so Alfa Romeo stuck with the simple Spider 1600. A simple name belied the successful combination of very pretty lines on a successful chassis, so successful that the Spider remained in production for almost 30 years with very few changes. In 1970 Alfa introduced the Series 2 which featured minor changes to the interior and exterior, notably the squared off trunk lid and grill. The engine was upgraded to a 1962 CC engine and the car was renamed the 2000 Spider Veloce. 1982 saw the introduction of the Series 3 Spider, which featured a black rubber spoiler on the trunk lid but also introduced a 2.0-liter engine with Bosch Fuel Injection. Street modified (SCCA rules) 1979 Alfa Romeo Spider (twin-cam inline-four 1962 cc engine with Spica fuel injection), with 68k total miles. Significant engine mods (done in 1987 at about 45k miles) include Autodelta camshafts (11mm valve lift, timing IO/IC/EO/EC of 35/-75/-75/-35 degrees and 252 degrees of lift at 0.050”, estimated +20 HP), European headers (+6 HP), Shankle high performance Quadraflow air induction system (+7 HP), and the head was milled 0.010” to increase the compression ratio. The second set of points (originally installed for emissions controlled) has been removed. The car also has a Shankle “sure-start” mechanical actuator from Shankle replacing the original thermostatic actuator. (The Autodelta camshafts do not sacrifice low-RPM power, but I did adjust the idle up to about 1000 RPM to eliminate hunting.)Drive train: The engine is in great shape and very strong. The European headers and Quadraflow intake has made it a bit louder than stock. There is some oil seepage from both the oil pan and the rear differential (typical of aluminum engines of that period). Steering still tight. Body: New paint in 2013. There are some minor hail dents (about a half dozen each on the trunk and engine hood) that you can see in the pictures if you look closely. I bought the car in 1985 (I am the second owner) and covered it daily through 1987 and it has been garaged daily since then (so no rust). Overall, the body is in very good shape. Interior: Ok. The dash is still in good shape (no cracks) and the windshield visors are tight. I did a hack job installing a new radio decades ago and that needs to be redone. Some of the dash trim has broken (like around the heater controls). All gauges work fine. There is some discoloration on the carpet from sun damage and some discoloration and minor nicks on the door panels. The outside passenger door handle works intermittently. The lock on the Shankle sure start no longer holds so it needs to be manually held during starting. Suspension: The suspension is worn and creaks. It should be rebuilt (Centerline part BJ125 ($564) for front and BJ129 ($232) for rear). Performance springs (Centerline part PS410 ($132) for front and PS412 ($112) for rear) and Koni shocks (Centerline part SA155 ($122) for front SA178 ($122) for rear) would be super nice also. For sale is my 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. It is a Series 2 Spider representing the first update from the Series 1 “Osso di Sepia” model with rounded rear end. The Series 2 model introduced the Kamm tail and is viewed by many as the most attractive of the four series of Spiders. This is a rare example of a rebuilt Series 2 Spider. The car is finished in red paint, with fully restored black vinyl interior (seats, door trims, carpets, etc). It has a roll-bar fitted for safety and has the original equipment alloy wheels. The engine is the 2000cc version of the classic Alfa Romeo twin-cam engine, fitted with Spica mechanical fuel injection. I bought the car from its previous owner in California in April 2010. He had had the car re-built and restored at a cost of over $15,000 by an Alfa Romeo specialist in Orange County. Engine and suspension were completely rebuilt, and electronic ignition was fitted . The car was repainted, and new trim installed (seats, door panels, side panels and carpet). New rubbers and moldings were fitted and a new convertible top was installed. The car showed 20,376 miles when it arrived in Tennessee. I have used the car very little since I bought it, as my heavy travel schedule has taken precedence. Please note that I am not able to guarantee the current odometer reading of 20,500, as I cannot guarantee that the reading on the car when I received it was accurate. I have replaced the heavy black US-spec front and rear bumpers with the earlier chrome versions plus a chrome grille. These items were obtained new from Italian Auto Parts in Atlanta in 2011 at a cost of $2,400. Oil and filters have been changed on a regular basis. I am now re-locating to the North West of England and, while I would like to take the car with me, a convertible left-hand drive sports car is not a practical proposition for use in that area - where driving is on the left, and there is much rain throughout the year and salted roads in the winter. I am therefore selling the car with an asking price of $12,500. The car is in excellent condition as can be seen from the photographs. It runs well, and all electrics work as they should, and the tires are good. It would benefit from a tune-up as its usage has been so light over the last few years. The car comes with an indoor dust cover and extensive documentation - rebuild and service notes, handbook, guide books, and a DVD (from the Alfa Romeo Oner’s Club) containing manuals, parts list, etc. Negatives? The car has a few small paint chips, the spare wheel is not reconditioned, and one of the door mirrors has some marks. That’s about all I can think of.
