1977 PONTIAC CAN AM For Sale To Good Home: An incredibly rare piece of American automotive history: A great running 1977 Pontiac Can Am with 77,100 original miles on the Pontiac 6.6L 400 and Turbo 400 transmission! Less than 1,400 were ever produced and it is estimated that less than 300 remain in existence today and no one knows how many of those even still run! I’m a big believer in offering buyers as much information as possible prior to making a purchase decision. I’ve been an active ebay user for 15 years and have 100% positive feedback. I also have a separate business ebay account where I am a Top Rated Powr Seller. So with that said, here is a lengthy description, lots of photos, and at the bottom there are links to a couple videos of the car as well! The vehicle is being sold as-is and is available for inspection in Tempe, Arizona prior to purchase. A $500 NONREFUNDABLE deposit is due via PayPal within 24hrs of auction end, remaining funds due within 7 days by cash, wire transfer, or cashier's check (must be issued in my presence or must have cleared into my account) or cleared personal check. Vehicle can be shipped anywhere with prepayment and with the buyer covering all shipping costs. This vehicle is also for sale on other sites and locally so this listing may be ended at any time prior to having a bid on the auction. NO RESERVE Vehicle History This is basically a one-owner car: The original owner purchased the vehicle new in Great Falls, Montana in 1977 where he was serving in the US Air Force at Malstrom AFB (car still has a department of defense access sticker on the front bumper used to get onto base), from there the original owner moved to Kentucky, and then finally to Arizona where the vehicle has resided for the past 3 years. This car was used mostly as a toy and only driven occasionally throughout the decades, it has 77,100 original miles! At some point the car was rear-ended and the original owner had to replace the trunk and spoiler. He got the spoiler from a donor Can Am but I believe the trunk came from a regular Le Mans. Wanting to get the most out of the Pontiac 400, the original owner did some performance upgrades. The original W72 6X heads were replaced with RAM AIR III heads from a 68 GTO, the rear end gears were changed to 3.73 and he also added headers and dual exhaust system. In 2012 the now elderly original owner moved from Kentucky to Arizona and then transferred the title to his son who had grown up with the vehicle and had a deep connection to it. The son had some general maintenance done on the vehicle and used it very sparingly for the next 3 years. He only put around 250 miles on the car – mostly driving to and from local car shows. The vehicle was kept covered for the majority of its life so there is very little rust. This is a great example of an ultra-rare car! The car was ordered from Pontiac with the following extra options: • Saf-T Track Rear Axle • GR70 x 15 White Letter Tires • Custom Sport Steering Wheel • Soft Ray Glass, All Windows • Front Seat Console Condition Excellent mechanical condition! It runs fantastically well and is a great ride, very smooth. The interior is beautiful, 8.5/10. The seats have been reupholstered and the original firethorn red trim is in great condition. The body is straight with the exception of 2 main dents and is free of rust except for a few small spots as highlighted in the you tube video. I rate the paint as Fair with fading, scratches, touch up paint, and small dents throughout. This car is a Driver and I would have no hesitation driving this car on a long road trip. If someone wanted to turn this into a great show car then 95% of the work needed would just be having a body shop prep the surface and apply paint and decals. The performance upgrades really make a big difference when compared to most Can Ams: 6.7 second 0-60 time! The Good • Runs Great, engine and transmission need nothing. • 77,100 Original Miles • Clean Title • Numbers Matching Car – the Engine and Transmission have never been out of this car (vin stamping on engine block is shown in a photo) • One Owner Vehicle for 35 years • Interior is beautiful, original Firethorn/White combo. • Seats were reupholstered • Headliner is in great condition, not sagging, not ripped • RAM Air III heads from 68 GTO • Headers Installed • Dual Exhaust with two catalytic converters, wide pipes, and quad exhaust tips. • Rear gears changed to 3.73 (idles at 700 RPM, cruises at 3500 RPM @ 75mph) • Brand New cooling system (October 2015): 3 core high performance aluminum radiator, water pump, divider plate (properly spaced before installation), thermostat, radiator hoses, heater hoses, and coolant. Car runs perfectly at 195-200 degrees just like it should, even while sitting at idle or hauling down the freeway at 75mph. • Tune Up performed right before the move from KY to AZ (Summer 2012). New plugs, wires, and Pinon Seal & Gear Oil. Only 500 miles on these components. • Original wheels and chrome wheel trim • New Tires, $700 installed 05/12/12 by Discount Tire. I have the certificates in hand for their lifetime repair/replacement plan. BFG Radials 255/60R15 – Only 500 miles on these tires, they are like brand new! • Original Owner’s Manual, Maintenance Schedule Logbook, Warranty Card and other documentation included. The carpet has never been taken out of the car so if you want the original build sheet it should still be under there. All available receipts, warranties, etc. will be included with the sale. • New Header Gasket and Parking Brake work done by Vintage Auto Repair - Phoenix, AZ (November 2015) • New hood mounted Tachometer. The original owner added a hood tach to replicate the look of some 60s GTOS/Judges. This unit was not working when I purchased the car in June 2015 so a new one was just installed last week. It looks so sharp and really adds to the personality of the car. • New Air intake hose • New Fuel Pump (sometime between 2012-2015, within past 500 miles) • New Battery (August 2014) • New Power Steering Pump and Fluid (December 2015) • Oil Change (10W30) & Filter (November 2015) • Recent Shocks (somewhere between 500-2,000 miles ago) • Rochester 800CFM Quadrajet Carburetor – recent tune up in 2012. • Original Jack and Donut Spare Tire in trunk (I'm not sure if the donut is original, I thought it was but was just told by an interested buyer that these came with an inflatable spare tire and air cannister and not donuts) • Rust – This car is almost totally rust free. It has a level of surface rust/patina on any exposed metal but no holes or anything rusting through. See the undercarriage photos for the condition of the floor pans, they are like brand new, zero rust. There are 2 main rust spots worth mentioning and they are highlighted in the you tube video. • I just did a test last week and got 19 miles per gallon with a 60/40 mix of highway/city driving using 91 octane. • Comes with the original 6X heads which are a $400 value on their own (2 rocker arms are missing but those are like $2 each). I am also happy to include all of the parts that I recently replaced: original hood tach, timing cover, water pump, radiator, etc. • Carpet is in very good shape for being 40 years old! Only holes are located by driver’s left foot. • Interior buttons and levers work: lights, wipers, indicators, AM radio, cigarette lighter, glove box light, door lights, vent controls, heater, blower (No A/C – was not ordered from Pontiac by original owner), trip reset on odometer, headlight dimmer/brights, lights behind instruments, interior light dimmer, dome light. • New Seatbelt retainers • Trunk has cloth floor mat • Has an engine block heater installed from its time in Montana and those cold winter nights. This hasn't been used in a long time and I don't know if it still works. • For some performance data, I ran a single 0-60 pass down the street yesterday and got 6.7 seconds! I think that is really respectable acceleration given that this car came stock from the factory with a reported 200HP, so the upgraded heads, headers, and dual exhaust definitely have an impact. I think this time can be still be improved upon with some practice and carb adjustments. The Bad • Paint – Fair Condition. It is showing its age with chips, scratches, and small dents throughout. Replacement decals are still available from Phoenix Graphics. • Door and Trunk Weatherstripping – dry rotted, cracking, poor condition. • Dents – 2 main dents near underside of car. One behind driver’s side front tire and the other is right in front of the bumper on the driver’s side. Also, lots of dime sized or smaller dents throughout. • Rust – 2 main rust spots are behind the rear wheels – see video for more detail. • Louver seals – looks like they need some sealant (contact me for a link to an online photo album that has 60+ photos of the car because I have a clear photo of this there) • Speedometer – lags / not accurate because of rear gear change • Clock does not work, not sure if it has a bad fuse or if there is some other way to turn it on/off? • Fuel Gauge – The scale is skewed so when you fill up the needle goes past F and as a result, empty is actually somewhere between the halfway line and E. I just fill up when I’m at ½ a tank to be safe. • Washer Fluid Pump does not work • Dash has crack on top side, easily covered if you get a dash mat. • EGR, choke adjustment, and some other emissions stuff were removed from the Carb when the heads and headers where installed. Many people believed that these things were robbing horsepower when they were first introduced and wanted them gone. I have a shoebox with a lot of these original parts that will be included in the sale. • Coolant reservoir has cracks that have been repaired with fiberglass resin and adhesive caulking. It does not leak and the fix is not easily visible because it is on the back side of the tank. • Rear seat upholstery has a seam that is coming apart and two sun stains, see you tube video. • Exhaust – from the catalytic converters back to the rear tailpipes, the exhaust pipes are very rusted. See underbelly photos. If I was going to keep the car I would remove the catalytic converters since emissions aren’t required in AZ for classic car insurance and just replace the exhaust pipes to the back. Check out my store for more great Unique and Classic Cars. This car runs is a good runner but has been sitting awhile so is going to need some work to get it running. It has the Big Block 400 with a 4-Speed Manual Transmission which makes this car a blast to drive. I used to start these cars up once a month or so to keep all the seals tight and the cars running but have not been able to keep up on that for awhile. This car was a runner before I parked it and I'm sure wouldn't take much to get it going again. Maybe even just a battery. The fuel should be drained as its 4-5 years old Who knows you may replace a Fuel pump Water pump or something But a Bit of tinkering and this car is set to go the pictures were from last summer so maybe a sticker is more peeled up or some minor something but this is a Tight car that is a Orig 4spd 400 Trans Am. Drive it around and Enjoy it until you decide to pull it apart and restore it..;-) Its a great driving car. It is a bright orange in color with the big black and silver bird on the hood and matching decals. The paint is in very good shape still and shines up nice. It is a little faded right now just from sitting but when buffed comes out very nice. This car does have a sunroof which someone put in and should be sealed up when restored it isnt a leaker though although im sure it will at some point. The body is very straight on this car and it doesn't have any visible rust. The previous owner installed a few extra exterior lights which you can see. Has a very cool set of aftermarket Gold Wire Wheels and a set of White Walls Tires that really give this car a unique look. They also put fender flares on the car which really makes it look unique. I have never seen them Before This is a 2 Owner car that came from Arizona and never seen the road in the winter anywhere it is ready to tinker around on...;-). Options: 400 4-Speed Aftermarket Wheels Fender Flares The interior is in really good condition on this car. It has the black interior with vinyl seats. The seats are actually in very good shape. The front seats have seat covers on them which have kept them protected. The carpets are not in that great of shape and should probably be replaced. I'm going to start by saying this is a professional build with only 1500 miles since resto. Miles on car prior to build were 91k Orig. Car had minor rust where the shop that built it did a good job restoring those areas. I have covered everything in this ad as I know it and hope someone will buy this beautiful car and enjoy like I am right now. My wife and I took this car for a drive in the mountains and what a great day we had. Do ask questions.-Orig rebuilt 170 (Although I can not find the "T" stamp indicating it's a 170 I'm alsmost certain that it is. Please understand that there is a slim possibility it's a 144 which is an "N" codeAll NEW/Rebuilt parts are at time of build.-Rebuilt Automatic, it's origin I am unsure but it works great, has a shift kit so it hits rather hard and I couldn't get it to kick down-Dual exhaust and she sounds soooo cool-Motor runs like a top and starts right up. Miles on car prior to build were 91k Orig. Car had minor rust where the shop that built it did a good job restoring those areas. I have covered everything in this ad as I know it and hope someone will buy this beautiful car and enjoy like I am right now. My wife and I took this car for a drive in the mountains and what a great day we had. Do ask questions. -Orig rebuilt 170 (Although I can not find the "T" stamp indicating it's a 170 I'm alsmost certain that it is. Please understand that there is a slim possibility it's a 144 which is an "N" code All NEW/Rebuilt parts are at time of build. -Rebuilt Automatic, it's origin I am unsure but it works great, has a shift kit so it hits rather hard and I couldn't get it to kick down -Dual exhaust and she sounds soooo cool -Motor runs like a top and starts right up. I did notice that it needs a good warm up before I just set out on my drive -Fuel economy was 26mpg for my unscientific test -New tires, Toyo -New B&M shifter that works great -New shocks, bushings you name it -New brakes and full brake system, lines, fittings, etc -New fuel system, lines, elec pump, etc -Rebuilt later model Ford 9" rearend -New undercoating -New interior sound proof -New interior, note that some of the pass window cranks are stipped and need replacing -New glass throughout -New seals, rubbers -New base clear paint -I will include a front bumper but it's used and needs resto -Carpet on dash and in trunk are glued -Comes with spare, spare part, and car cover -I'm leaving the Falcon plates -Everything works, gauges, lights, and aftermarket stereo/CD in glove box -Heat system was restored and works -You will not set any land speed records with this car but it's cool to drive for pennies on the dollar -Does have some very minor paint chips in a couple corners but it's very very few -Car books very well but I'm prepared to sell this for a great price -I see no reason this car wouldn't go across the country, but keep in mind it's over 50 years old and anything can happen with a classic -Please watch the video as it helps to describe this vehicle -I reserve the right to end listing early if I have a solid Buy It Now offer, I sell 75% of my classics like that -Please call with questions, there's nothing like a transparent conversation Please understand that I buy clean Arizona vehicles and if they need something obvious I repair them, within reason, and place them on eBay. CLICK PLAY FOR FULL VIDEO! -Running and Driving, does need a couple things so please read entire ad before bidding-Factory 302 Inline 6 cyl, starts right up, runs just a tiny bit rough yet it's been sitting a few months-Recently had ALL oil leaks repaired, new rear main seal, all new gaskets-Later model Clarke 5 speed transmission with Overdrive, new clutch, pressure plate, and bearing-2 speed rear axle yet the switch needs re-wiring as it was disconnected and never reconnected when new trans was installed-Steering on this truck is great, straight down the hwy no problem-All new front brakes, hoses, fittings etc, they work great-Rear seem to work just fine, might need another bleeding but you can decide-Bed is an 8'x16'-I believe this to be a 3 ton but didn't do much research on it when I got it-Paint on cab looks original however I do see some small cracking of previous body repair so It could have been paint in some areas-Sun fading, scratches, and patina are present-We painted the bed rail, bumper, wheels, and steps-Tool box is large and fully functional-Fuel tank is clean inside and has new hoses, cap etc-Wood on bed is older but very usable-Grille is original and free from damage, I elected not to paint this as it would take from the orig patina-Not all glass is good, see pics or video for details-Driver door handle works but need a set screw to keep it from popping off-Window regulators work grest-Door hinges are NOT loose or abused, latches work good-Door and window seals/rubbers are old and in need of repair-Lights and blinkers are not connected, previous owner was about to rewire them so he has cut most of those wires-Brake lights, at least the driver side, works-This is NOT a dump bed-Solid floors, note that someone torched a hole in the floor to either get to the old transmission bolts, or to access the new transmission, either way they did a poor job in cutting the holes, see pics or video-Not all gauges work and those that do I'm not comfortable saying they are all that accurate, just being honest-Miles are unknown as the odo was disconnected at some point, it's a classic-Brand new 6 Volt battery-Lots of new parts and work under the hood to get this thing to run-Heater core seems to hold just fine, I can feel heat coming out, but keep in mind we were 110deg outside when I drove this things-Tires all hold air, rears have some light cracking from our hot sunshine, no sign of rot or coming apart-Front tires look new-I hold clean clear notarized Arizona title ready to be transfered into the new buyers name-My shippers can ship this truck without an issue, storing the truck here with me is no problem just comunicate with me on what you need I'm flexible-Please watch the video as it helps to describe this vehicle -I reserve the right to end listing early if I have a solid Buy It Now offer, I sell 75% of my classics like that -Please call with questions, there's nothing like a transparent conversationPlease understand that I buy clean Arizona vehicles and if they need something obvious I repair them, within reason, and place them on eBay. CLICK PLAY FOR FULL VIDEO! -Running and Driving, does need a couple things so please read entire ad before bidding -Factory 302 Inline 6 cyl, starts right up, runs just a tiny bit rough yet it's been sitting a few months -Recently had ALL oil leaks repaired, new rear main seal, all new gaskets -Later model Clarke 5 speed transmission with Overdrive, new clutch, pressure plate, and bearing -2 speed rear axle yet the switch needs re-wiring as it was disconnected and never reconnected when new trans was installed -Steering on this truck is great, straight down the hwy no problem -All new front brakes, hoses, fittings etc, they work great -Rear seem to work just fine, might need another bleeding but you can decide -Bed is an 8'x16' -I believe this to be a 3 ton but didn't do much research on it when I got it -Paint on cab looks original however I do see some small cracking of previous body repair so It could have been paint in some areas -Sun fading, scratches, and patina are present -We painted the bed rail, bumper, wheels, and steps -Tool box is large and fully functional -Fuel tank is clean inside and has new hoses, cap etc -Wood on bed is older but very usable -Grille is original and free from damage, I elected not to paint this as it would take from the orig patina -Not all glass is good, see pics or video for details -Driver door handle works but need a set screw to keep it from popping off -Window regulators work grest -Door hinges are NOT loose or abused, latches work good -Door and window seals/rubbers are old and in need of repair -Lights and blinkers are not connected, previous owner was about to rewire them so he has cut most of those wires -Brake lights, at least the driver side, works -This is NOT a dump bed -Solid floors, note that someone torched a hole in the floor to either get to the old transmission bolts, or to access the new transmission, either way they did a poor job in cutting the holes, see pics or video -Not all gauges work and those that do I'm not comfortable saying they are all that accurate, just being honest -Miles are unknown as the odo was disconnected at some point, it's a classic -Brand new 6 Volt battery -Lots of new parts and work under the hood to get this thing to run -Heater core seems to hold just fine, I can feel heat coming out, but keep in mind we were 110deg outside when I drove this things -Tires all hold air, rears have some light cracking from our hot sunshine, no sign of rot or coming apart -Front tires look new -I hold clean clear notarized Arizona title ready to be transfered into the new buyers name -My shippers can ship this truck without an issue, storing the truck here with me is no problem just comunicate with me on what you need I'm flexible -Please watch the video as it helps to describe this vehicle -I reserve the right to end listing early if I have a solid Buy It Now offer, I sell 75% of my classics like that -Please call with questions, there's nothing like a transparent conversation Please understand that I buy clean Arizona vehicles and if they need something obvious I repair them, within reason, and place them on eBay.
