Better still, it's got some unusual features, including a lovely light blue paint job that really stands out, and with 427 cubic inches under the hood, it backs up the look with plenty of go power. It's Gulf Blue, a well-known and highly respected racing color from the period, and it looks pretty darned good on the Cobra. In truth, it's always nice to see non-traditional but period-correct colors on the replicas, suggesting that the guy who built it knew exactly what he was doing rather than just going with what he thought was pretty. If you know the Backdraft cars, you know that their workmanship is well-regarded in the Cobra industry and the fit and finish on this particular car is worthy of all the extra scrutiny it's likely to get at shows. White stripes are, of course, part of the package, but look closely and you'll see that there's a black outline that really makes the stripes pop. Just look at the overhead shot and tell me you don't love the look! It's set up as an SC, so it has the flares, the jacking stubs instead of bumpers, a chrome roll hoop, and all the other fixtures that define the Cobra today. And since this one was built to drive, there's 3M protective tape on the rear fenders to prevent chips and trick polished heat shields on the side pipes that might save your pants next time. The interior is basic Cobra: wrap-around low back buckets, black leather, and minimal frills. However, for the business of driving, there are few better places to work. A fat leather-wrapped steering wheel communicates the front wheels' activities directly to you palms and even the shifter for the 5-speed gearbox has a slight forward cant to replicate the look of the original 4-speed. Attractive VDO gauges monitor all the important stuff and flip-up racing style toggle switches are just plain fun. No radio, no heat, nothing that'll slow it down, just pure performance that's in almost new condition. The trunk is reasonably spacious for tools and spares for your track day, and it does include a full tonneau cover that's probably a must-have for any Anglo 2-seater. Tilt the hood forward and you'll find a legitimate 427 cubic inches of Jack Roush built muscle, neatly packaged in a lightweight small block package. A big Holley double pumper feeds an Edelbrock intake and the Roush emblems are proudly displayed on the retro-looking air cleaner and fabricated aluminum valve covers. It cackles through the side pipes like a machine that makes a real-world 530 horsepower and as you ease out the clutch in first hear, you'll understand why these cars remain so insanely popular year after year; the performance is explosive! The unique suspension includes a giant front sway bar and rack-and-pinion steering, and out back there's a BMW independent setup that's agile yet supple, making this a Cobra you could use every day. Power 4-wheel disc brakes are powerful enough to dislodge the fillings in your teeth and hide behind 17-inch Halibrand-style wheels that are absolutely perfect for a Cobra like this. Rubber is from Goodyear, measuring 235/45/17 in front and a giant 315/35/17 out back. Beautifully built, insanely fast, and supremely competent in the corners, this is the Cobra we all wish for when we entertain the thoughts of building our own. Wrapping a 600 horsepower ROUSHcharged V8 in Tremec gears, BMW suspension components and a literal interpretation of Triple Ace Bud Anderson's "Old Crow" warbird, this elite roadster takes Ol' Shel's Cobra to a whole new level! BODYWORK/TRIM From inception, Backdraft cars are turnkey products developed and engineered to mimic the vintage appeal of authentic aluminum Cobras while handily out-performing pretty much anything on the street. The assembly of this roadster's professionally finished body began with a steel-lined GRP molding that was hand-tweaked and gel coated on a full-size rotisserie rack. Once that coating was complete, the newly formed fuselage was smoothed by a seasoned fiberglass professional, baked in an even coat of primer and inspected top-to-bottom to ensure first-class quality. When quality control was cleared, clean Vapor Metallic PPG was detailed with Olive war paint, covered in three layers of ChemSpec clear, baked and cured for three days, and finally, flattened and polished to a head turning shine. And today, this super slick Cobra is a sophisticated build that exhibits twice the style and twice the race-bred DNA of a typical replicar boulevard cruiser. Following the successful launch of their P-51 Mustang series, some of the most sought-after and collectible tuner Mustangs ever created, Backdraft Racing armed another storied American fighter with this P51 themed Cobra. And, as if you couldn't tell, their WW2-themed aesthetics look absolutely stunning on this roadster's sublime and curvaceous body. At the front of the car, a sculpted and re-angled nose hangs black-trimmed headlights above clear, bullet-style parking lamps and Satin Black quick lifts. A riveted hood anchors a small, "ROUSHCHARGED" scoop in front of locking latches and Satin Black windshield wipers. Behind that hood, a tinted, Backdraft-branded windshield hangs a small mirror and 'Jack Roush' branded wind wings in front of a tight top, a Satin Black roll bar and a familiar, Monza-style fuel filler. At the sides of the car, monochromatic exhaust pipes ride below stylized Roush emblems, color-keyed air extractors and 3M quarter guards. And at the back of the car, black-trimmed tail lamps combine with a black tag light to illuminate a locking trunk handle and a second pair of Satin Black quick lifts. ENGINE Like most Roush-branded creations, this Cobra features a supercharged and intercooled 4.6 liter Ford 'mod motor'. But, unlike most run-of-the-mill Roush mod motors, that engine, installed by the pros at Speed Fanatix of Boynton Beach, Florida, makes an incredible 600 horsepower! The TVS Technology ROUSHcharger is an Eaton-style blower that successfully manages on-track temperatures thanks to an air-to-liquid intercooler. At the side of that blower, a large induction system snakes around an Olive Green alternator and Aeromotive fuel componentry. Below that blower, a high performance Roush intake complements satin fuel rails, yellow Accel coil packs and Olive Green cam covers. At the front of that blower, a lightweight aluminum radiator utilizes an Olive water neck and polished tubes to circulate coolant around a large puller fan and polished overflow tank. Even though Ford's go-to V8 is a very strong engine as is, this one has been supplemented with a beefier cooling system and recalibrated ECM. Aesthetically, the spotless mill features a typical OEM-level appearance that's set off by an array of clean accents. And, when you twist its key, you'd better be sure you've clicked your belts! DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION When it's time to put your hair in the wind, forget about outdated Toploader 4-speeds because this modern-day Cobra blisters the pavement with a fresh Tremec TKO600 5-speed. That world-class transmission delivers power to a 3.46 limited-slip BMW rear end that creates whiplash-inducing acceleration while still allowing the car to loaf along at highway speeds. That drivetrain, which is bolted to a hot-rolled rectangular steel ladder-type chassis, sends power through the same BMW-sourced MacPherson strut front and fully independent rear suspension that's become a Backdraft hallmark. And thanks to that suspension's adjustable front stabilizer bar, fully adjustable rear ride height and BMW power steering system, you're getting a Cobra that has a performance threshold capable of humiliating much more expensive hardware. Brakes are drilled and slotted discs at all four corners that, thanks to this car's featherweight construction, are virtually impervious to fade. And there's simply nothing that looks better on a Cobra than a set of Halibrand-style wheels, which spin aggressive Nitto radials around yellow Wilwood calipers. INTERIOR P-51-branded bomber seats, which are complete with 4-point Crow Enterprizes harnesses, form the foundation for this roadster's interior; and are a massive aesthetic upgrade over the puffy shells you'll find in most replicas.
