Sure, at first glance, it appears to be a mild but nicely done custom with some of the usual tricks you'd find in a hot rodding 101 book. But then, when you take a closer look, you see things like traditional trim, restored assembly line pieces and an original flathead engine that wears a bunch of period-correct speed equipment. That's about the time that you'll catch yourself saying "Yeah, this thing IS cool." But hey, why stop there? Next thing you know you're glancing inside the car to savor its exceptionally well-executed, yet understated, interior. Then, you're taking a look under the car and noticing all the hand-fabrication that went into just its exhaust system, never mind its other components. And, after about 45 minutes, it occurs to you that you're standing next to a 'mild custom' which absolutely blows you away via class and seductive details! As I've mentioned numerous times, the best customs are that those seamlessly blur the line between what's original and what's been modified. And since this Plymouth muddies that line so well, you'd probably need to park it beside a factory fresh car to fully appreciate all of its subtle nuances. That said, some of the big changes are easy to spot including shaved door handles, frenched LED tail lights, a slightly modified hood, a heavily re-sculpted grille and a power radio antenna that's been recessed into one of the quarters. The car's Medium Blue Pearl paint is a mile-deep urethane that has enough sparkle to power a small city, although the harsh lights of our studio come nowhere near doing it justice. In true 'best custom' fashion, final assembly is vastly more precise than factory work and, as a result, all doors fit exactly, hood shut lines are even, and the car's deck lid is flush. And since this awesome Plymouth, which was a super-clean show-winning original before its latest transformation, has already won first place at the 2009 Detroit AutoRama, you can rest assured it's 100% worthy of the phrase 'best custom'. Naturally, all of the car's chrome and stainless has been restored to first class show standards. Those are original bumpers that have been straightened and re-chromed. A few elements of the car's original grille remain, but they have definitely been modified to provide an entirely new look. That strip down the center of the hood is a hand-made piece. In case you couldn't tell, those frenched headlights are modern sealed-beam halogen units. And all the glass except for the rear window is brand spankin' new. Most hot rodders wouldn't think twice about dropping some sort of generic small block Chevy under this Deluxe's hood. But it's infinitely more impressive when someone dares to be different, and the result is a '49 Plymouth street rod that actually carries its original 230 cubic inch flathead six. With that in mind, the inline mill is pretty far removed from stock, with a custom camshaft, a comprehensive bottom end rebuild and enough vintage speed equipment to open up a small museum. There's a finned and painted cylinder head from Edgy Speed Shop that perfectly matches a finned and painted air cleaner. Between that head and air cleaner, a pair of Stromberg 97 carburetors feed a coated Edmonds intake manifold. There's a cool Eddie Meyer fuel distribution block on the firewall and a matching aluminum oil filter, both retro-looking parts that seem like they were meant for this car. And modern upgrades include: a 12 volt electrical system that's complete with a polished alternator, modern Hi Temp Radio Suppression wires, a polished AC compressor, a set of Fenton exhaust headers that dump into a custom dual exhaust system, and a lot of great looking stainless hardware. Throw this Special up on a lift and you'll find an equally exceptional chassis that's full of wonderful details and flawless craftsmanship. The transmission is a 3-speed manual with an overdrive unit, so it cruises easily at modern highway speeds. There's a beefy Ford nine inch out back that's full of moderate 3.25 gears. The front suspension appears to be original, although the rear end uses a set of tube shocks that were probably not available in 1949. And the final detail is those too-cool-to-be-believed spinner hubcaps that steady hand-painted checker patterns inside of 15 inch Michelin wide whitewall radials. You're in for a special treat when you climb inside this custom. Simple and stock appearing, upscale materials and a subdued color combination make this cockpit something you'll show off every chance you get. The blue and crimson vinyl has been stitched up in a very 1950s pattern which is incredibly elegant without being flashy. This is our 3rd car and it's always garaged and babied. This is my 6th Mustang and my 3rd LX 5.0, yet it's my first Coupe (the most rare, and my favorite by FAR). Please don't email me with any low ball offers. This is not a low ball car. I'm not hurting for money in any way. I've priced this for a very quick sale. Once this is gone, you may spend years finding one this special again. I will not answer emails from anyone I don't feel is a serious buyer. Please have your finances ready to go before contacting me or buying it on auction. The only thing I'm interested in is selling the car to purchase a 2011 or 2012 Mustang 5.0. I plan to do the On3 turbo kit on it, just like my Mustang has, and have just as much fun as I've had with this car. The reality is, it's more about the fun I have "playing" with the cars than the driving as between our three cars, I drive about 3,000 miles per year, or 1,000 on each car. A bit about me: I'm in my 40s, married with kids, and always have some sort of "toy" (car) to play with. After years of being without a Mustang, I had to have another. It took a LONG time to find this one after weeding through hundreds I'd never consider. It seems many Mustangs in the $5,000-$10,000 range have been beat, have high miles, rust, you name it... None of which I wanted to deal with. The previous owner who was a Bentley/Audi Master Technician. He installed the On3 Turbo system and everything that goes along with it, flawlessly. He bought the car with 29,000 miles in near bone-stock condition closer to two years ago. I bought the car and continued where he left off and completely updated the interior to today's level of cars, as well as completing the suspension. Keep in mind the original seats, carpet, and center console were all nearly flawless as you'd expect with care and the low miles. But I didn't like the color and the low-back seats were far too soft and uncomfortable. I performed the following all within the last few months: new front seats, new rear seats, new carpet, new floor mats, new touch screen iPod/Pandora stereo, new center console pieces, new full AutoMeter Cobalt series gauges (the best, and most expensive). My initial goal was to change out the horrible stock seats. I couldn't stop, and it now looks, smells, and is mostly new inside. In addition I had my Mustang Tuner install all of the key gauges to monitor Boost, A/F, as well as Oil Pressure. The 70mm turbo is set to a relatively low 8psi of boost (most run 10psi with no issues on a stock motor) running through a beefy 3" Intercooler, and a very safe Tune done by Chris at Power Adder Solutions in North Carolina. The car makes 380 wheel horse power and 445 wheel torque. Converting to what manufacturers rate their cars at puts it around 450hp/535tq all in an extremely tight, 3,000 pound car (current Mustangs weigh 3650). The previous owner took the car to the track once after he completed the turbo setup. It's never been to a track since. He ran two quarter mile runs, both in the 12.3-12.4 @ 117-118mph range. This is on street tires with an easy launch and easy shifting. 11 second times would be a breeze with drag radials if that's your thing. If you decide to track the car on a "road coarse", it would be an absolute blast as the suspension is setup for that, not drag racing. I've never had it on any track. I love to drive it just for cruising. I have nearly all books, records, maintenance, etc that came with the car. This includes the original books AND the original cost sheet from when the car was purchased new. You'll get all of this in a huge, thick folder full of receipts and manuals. Two sets of original keys as well. In all, approximately $15,000+ with install costs has been spent on making this car one of the fastest, best handling, tightest, and newest feeling Fox Body Mustangs. Stock Fox Mustangs drive pretty loose and poor in my opinion. Every aspect of the suspension was done to make it handle unbelievably well and still have a nice drive you could do daily. It's tight as a drum. I can safely say you'll probably not come across a nicer one at any price. The pictures speak a thousand words, but when you get to actually sit in this car, see it, smell it, hear the stereo, and take it for a spin, you'll no doubt know this is the best car this money could buy. Condition - Exterior: Excellent. Easily a 9.5 out of 10, 10 being a new car. No dents, no scratches. Original paint, original panels, original VIN tags. All of the Black pieces are in great shape and do not need replacing (as expected with just over 40,000 miles). Condition - Interior: Excellent. Easily a 9.5 out of 10, 10 being a new car. I spent a lot of time on making the interior as new, or as close to new and updated as possible! The seats are out of a Hyundai Tiburon and are in excellent condition. no rips, no holes, no smells. I searched out Coupe seats so that they would sit lower to the floor and slide forward with a flip of the button on the passenger side. The rear seats are brand new Corbeau and match the fronts perfectly. The carpet is brand new, black, reproduction. The three major center console pieces are in excellent condition and house a brand new black arm rest. Where the cigarette ash tray used to be I installed a flat panel for your phone or iPod to sit. The stereo is a brand new JVC 6 1/4" touch screen with iPod hook up, USB port, and Pandora controller. Speaking of the stereo. In addition to the Head Unit there are full Boston Acoustics speakers, 2 JL Subs in a box, 2 Amplifiers (one for the subs, one for the speakers), and Crossovers. This is absolutely the best sounding stereo I've ever heard. Extremely clean and tight with no odd or obnoxious noises. The shifter is brand new and is a Pro 5.0 (the best). Shifts very smooth with a nice solid click into each gear. The dome light works perfectly, as does the retractable map light on the roof at the front of the headliner (very rare!). The only wear area I can think of is a very small, slight crack (maybe 1/8") on the left vent. I'm pretty sure this happened during the gauge install. Probably nothing you'd even see unless i pointed it out. Engine: Excellent condition. Stock motor, with the addition of the On3 Turbo system. All components are listed below. Starts flawlessly every time. Perfect idle. Drives very stock until you put your foot deeper for the swell of power. Shifts great with no issues, and far better than stock with the Pro 5.0. No vibrations, very smooth, as you'd expect if it was brand new. 380rwhp/445rwtq. Suspension: Amazing. If you've never read up on Maximum Motorsports, you should. They took a Fox Mustang and added their full suspension to record the 3rd highest lap time in Motor Trend history (article from 5 or so years ago, you can find it if you search). Take a look at the list below; every aspect of the suspension was completed to make this one of the best handling cars on the road today. If you don't believe me, you will when you drive it. You can turn into any corner at nearly any speed and it's completely flat. The ride is firm, but not any more firm that most sports cars and could easily be driven every day without complaint.
