Does it sound too good to be true? Then just keep reading about this 1955 Buick Roadmaster Riviera. Buick just seemed to have the best sense of premium style in the 1950s, and they were hardly subtle about it. The range-topping Roadmaster did it the best with painted fender wells, golden trim, more fender portholes, and those Dagmars that were truly sex appeal on wheels. It only gets better in the Riviera specification that helped emphasize the dip line in the doors by making this coupe body a pillarless hardtop. But as special as any Roadmaster Riviera is, this one has plenty of custom touches to hint at its more modern appeal. It starts with the Copper Metallic paint that's sandwiched in between the two areas of white. Plenty of Buicks of this era has the tri-tone paint effect but the precious metal shines on this one with the kind of luster you can only get from a modern and professional application. Even the door handles have been painted this color for a smoother appearance. But that's not the only place the chrome has been removed. A custom rear bumper has been created that is painted the car's colors and fits sung to the body for a sportier appearance that helps highlight the jet-inspired taillights. Lovers of brightwork still don't miss out in this Roadmaster thanks to the large American Racing wheels. The inside coordinates with the outside perfectly where the same paint scheme continues on the dash, and there's a copper vinyl used on the seats and door panels. The seats look quite new and feel as supple as leather. They have a breathable pattern that you'd expect on a BMW, but instead are applied to benches large enough to fit the whole family. The driver gets a three-spoke Nardi-like steering wheel (a hint at this custom Buick's more sporting nature) and beyond that is a stylish set of full gauges. In fact, Buick's design team really hit a home run with the entire dash. The appearance combines sporting elements like machined panels with elegant dials for a distinctively upscale appearance that still feels premium today. It's the perfect place to house everything from the factory AM radio to the power window controls. Instead of the old Nailhead V8 that came under the hood in '55, this one sports a 455 cubic-inch big block borrowed from an Electra that's a couple of decades younger than this couple. It's topped with a Moroso air cleaner and Rochester Quadra Jet four-barrel carburetor for easy breathing. The big V8 even has a nice rumble from the custom side exhaust. The transmission has also been upgraded to a TH400 three-speed automatic likely from the same Buick that donated its V8. While that makes for a powerful and smooth-shifting luxury car, that's not the whole story. This Roadmaster can handle the roads of the Riviera thanks to features like power steering, a four-link rear suspension, an upgrade to four-wheel disc brakes, and the modern grip of wide BF Goodrich TA tires. You're looking at a vintage Buick that came from the factory as something quite special, and then has been upgraded to be an even more unique coupe. Of those 3, this one is the most practical to sell. It has low mileage given it’s age and has the most reasonable value. I purchased this one by chance earlier this year and have been fixing it up to replace my more used Roadmaster. If you want a dependable vehicle with a luxury feel as well as tons of space for hauling, look no further. The Pros: - clear title and clean car fax; no accidents or problems (free copy can be provided) - only 101,400 miles - solid runner that starts every time no matter how long it’s been sitting; NO LEAKS - automatic transmission is clean and shifts perfectly smooth - tune up done within last 50 miles includes: coolant flush, oil change, new oil filter, new air filter, new spark plugs, new plug wires, new pcv valve and new wiper blades - interior is in excellent almost like new condition; no rips, tears or noticeable stains - ice cold air conditioning that has already been converted - 4 brand new tires - less than 250 miles on them - new starter - new front end and alignment (less than 100 miles on it) includes: upper and lower ball joints, steering linkage with inner and outer tie rods, center link and idler arm - newer after market stereo with cd player and remote control - plenty of life left in the brakes, no grabbing, pulling or sponginess - full gauge instrument panel (not the idiot lights) - lots of bells and whistles: climate control, cruise control with resume/accel, twighlight headlight settings, luggage rack, vista moon roof with shades, rear defog, low fluid indicators, power everything all in working condition (locks, seats, windows, mirrors), remote keyless entry (2 key fobs), and more. - huge storage and/or seating capacity (3rd row seating): can haul plywood or queen mattress - 16 to 20 mpg on average - newer alternator The Cons: - originally from the midwest so there is rust - mostly on the undercarriage (rear seat floor pan on passenger side is worst) - exhaust leak; I am getting an estimate within the next week and may fix prior to sale - some dings and scratches (some pictured above) which include, but not limited to: crack in housing of passenger side mirror, a small dent behind the front passenger side tire, scuffs on rear bumper, a small dent on the rear passenger quarter panel and small rust spots - shocks may need to be replaced soon - tailgate opens to the side but gets hung up when opening flat (may be easy fix, we haven’t really looked into it yet) - cannot guarantee emergency brake works This is a great all around vehicle that will get you (and a whole lot of stuff should you choose) from A to B in comfort. Using General Motors new C-body platform, Buick began to offer four different body styles of their Series 50 Super; with the 3-passenger business coupe being one of the rarest body styles. By the time Buick was done with their Super B-Series production, a total of 93,865 Supers were produced; from that total only 2,452 Super 3-Passeneger Business Coupes were produced. That equates to just over 2.5% of the Super’s total production leaving the factory as Business Coupes! This particular model’s rarity is due to the fact that 1941 was the only year of production. Buick created their Super series by using a combination of two different cars they already offered; the Roadmaster and Series Special 40. From the cowl back, the Roadmaster body was placed on the C-body frame, the Series Special 40 front clip completed the car. The result of that combination was an economical body design with voluminous interior room, while providing better fuel economy. This formula is still used in many luxury cars today. For instance most companies offer their best luxury models with a base engine from a lower model for those who do not value performance and rather would have an economical engine with the same amount of luxury. This 3-Passenger Business Coupe is a stunning example of Buick’s Super Series model. As stated by the previous owner this car has been repainted and re-chromed approximately 15 to 20 years ago, the rich black paint is in very good condition and shows extremely well, along with all of the exterior chrome accessories and trim. The previous owner also stated this Buick underwent a frame-up restoration at time of repaint, and judging from the condition of the body it was done professionally. Both sealed beam headlights seem to be original and perform their intended function well. Only available on the 1941 Super Series was a redesign of the clam-shell style hood, which opens in one piece from either side of the car. Taking a step inside this classic American business coupe the amount of passenger space is immediately apparent. A tan vinyl bench seat, which is in excellent condition, allows enough room for the 3 passengers to ride in comfort. If more passengers need to enjoy this Buick, two tan vinyl rear jump seats are tucked away behind the front bench seat. The original steering wheel and Art Deco dashboard appears to be original and has aged gracefully with the car. Newer black rubber lines the floor pans and is period correct. HISTORY/CREATION Introduced as a celebration of Buick's 50th anniversary, the 1953 Skylark was one of three specialty convertibles created to promote General Motors' leadership in design and innovation. Like its Fiesta and Eldorado stablemates, the big Buick was a limited-production, hand-made halo that was overwhelmingly admired by the public and rewarded with a very successful sales rate. For the 1954 model year, the marque transitioned to a Century-based replacement that, despite complementing the car's handsome looks with mass-production refinement, was not as well accepted. And by the end of the sales year, sentiment was low, numbers were low and GM decided to pull the plug on the tri-shield division's once celebrated line-topper. Today, roughly 60 years later, the car's world-class design characteristics can be found in pretty much every modern automaker's aesthetic DNA. And its unique blend of optimistic swagger and unmatched exclusivity make it one of the most coveted classics on the planet. BODYWORK/TRIM The beneficiary of a thorough, frame-off restoration that was completed sometime around 2009, this killer drop-top is one of the coolest Buicks we've ever seen! The restorers began by stripping the car's smooth, Harley Earl-designed body all the way to bare metal. When that heavy cleaning was complete, solid panels were assembled into a clean profile that presents largely blemish-free surfaces. After that thorough test fitting, a silky coat of correct Arctic White paint was capped with correct Black vinyl and teased to a glossy, show-stopping shine. And today, this Skylark's prestigious appearance is a lust worthy representation of one of America's most glorious eras of motoring. ENGINE Lift the car's 'alligator hood' and you'll find a 322 cubic inch Fireball V8 that props a correct Roadmaster assembly stamp in front of a correct 1165165 casting number. Nicknamed the "Nail valve", and eventually known as the "Nailhead", this fully detailed mill employs greater lift and better duration to create a Kansas-flat power band. Funny thing is: hot rodders of the day actually coined the engine's nickname as a derisive description of its puny valvetrain and restrictive plumbing, but they certainly couldn't ignore its stellar power! The proven block has undoubtedly been rebuilt, and probably looks much better today than when it growled off the assembly line. Aesthetically, the mill, which perches a massive air cleaner and big, 4-barrel carburetor above factory heads, has been painted a traditional green hue. There are many fresh pieces like pliable belts, an old school generator and proven Belden ignition cables. A glossy firewall meets satin fenders to frame those pieces in a construct of distinctly American curves. And overall, the engine seems clean, simple and highly functional. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION While the '53 Skylark was essentially a fully optioned, slightly customized Roadmaster, GM decided to build the '54 model on Buick's shorter Century/Special chassis. This certainly wasn't a popular decision at the time, but it definitely benefits the car today as more precise build techniques and better commonality make restoration and maintenance much easier. The basis for this drop-top's solidity is an industrial strength frame that's married to a correctly restored suspension. At the center of that suspension, a new-for-1953 Twin Turbine Dynaflow 2-speed twists power to a factory rear end. At the edges of that drivetrain, Dynaflow-mandated power drum brakes initiate quick, drama-free stops. Turns come courtesy of Dynaflow-mandated power steering. A single-pipe exhaust system makes good use of a factory replacement muffler. Everything rolls on familiar Kelsey-Hayes wires, which spin 7.60-15 BF Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls around "SKYLARK" branded center caps. And, with a fully sorted, red-tinged undercarriage that's ready to hit the road, this big cruiser would be right at home chauffeuring the family to their favorite dinner spot. INTERIOR Loaded with virtually every option in the book, this classic Buick's correct Matador Red interior features a perfect mix of outrageous style and traditional American luxury. The big bench seats, 4-way adjustable up front, are stuffed with fresh Foamtex padding, covered in correct block-embossed leather and trimmed in pristine stainless brightwork. In front of those seats, a Carlsbad Black dash hangs chrome-trimmed gauges behind an electric clock, a Selectronic radio and a factory heater. At the base of that dash, high quality carpet frames matched Buick mats and slick Skylark sills. At the sides of that carpet, chrome-trimmed door panels found small power window switches between bright stainless toppers and correct chrome handles. In front of the driver, a flexible-spoke steering wheel spins a full horn ring around an ornate centerpiece. Behind the passengers, a lighted trunk hides a fifth Kelsey-Hayes wheel inside a fifth whitewall tire. By 1954 General Motors started to use their all C-body platform on “Roadmaster” and “Super” models under the Buick and Cadillac brand. These were big luxury cars that were intended to cruise America’s Eisenhower Interstate System once it was completed. This particular car is an excellent example of a near factory condition Buick 70 Roadmaster Riviera. Boasting a painstaking and highly detailed frame-on restoration; this dry climate West Coast car was in extremely solid well preserved original condition prior to restoration. Finished in captivating Willow Green over a Carlsbad Black interior, the exterior of the car is remarkably straight with only very minor imperfections only visible on very close inspection. Stainless and chrome are also excellent showing no major signs of pitting or age. The weather stripping and rubber are in great shape with no cracking or weathering. Outfitted with almost every available option offered, this Roadmaster was the pinnacle premium luxury coupe built by Buick in 1955. Taking a step inside, the interior is as it was when new with every refurbished item done to factory specs. Both bench seats have been recovered in the two tone green vinyl and green cloth inserts; which look great and are in fantastic condition as well. The overall presentation of the interior is extremely inviting and around the shop, we have nicknamed the interior as “Emerald City”.   All gauges are original and functional, including the “Redline” speedometer and clock. All power options, such as power windows and power seats, are in good working order, with the exception of the vacuum wipers and horn. Factory air conditioning still works and has very unique, and functioning, rear exposed vents.
