It's as refined as its import-brand competitors, and easier to live with than some. Simply stated, the CTS is a very enjoyable car. For 2011, Cadillac CTS is available in two new body styles: a two-door CTS coupe and a CTS Sport Wagon. (The CTS Coupe is reviewed separately by New Car Test Drive.) This is in addition to the four-door sedan. The CTS Sport Wagon, introduced in late 2010, is available in CTS and high-performance CTS-V trim, and the CTS-V Sport Wagon is a 556-horsepower family hauler that goes toe-to-toe with the hyper-tuned luxury cars from BMW's M division and Mercedes-Benz AMG. The CTS offers something for a wide range of automotive needs with three engine options, manual and automatic transmissions, four different suspension and tire/wheel combos and optional all-wheel-drive in three different body styles. By price, the Cadillac CTS line compares with compact-sized luxury competitors such as the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class. By size and function, however, the CTS is closer to midsize competitors such as the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, and Audi A6. The base CTS sedan is a great value at about $36,000. The CTS uses rear-wheel drive, the baseline for a true sports sedan. The standard 3.0-liter V6 generates 274 horsepower and revs freely, complementing the available 6-speed manual transmission. The upgrade 3.6-liter V6 increases output to 304 hp, with substantially more torque, and it's rated at the same 27 mpg Highway as the smaller V6. The larger V6 works great with the optional 6-speed automatic, which is one of the best in this class. Both engines feature the latest technology, with variable valve timing and high-pressure direct fuel injection for the current optimum in power, fuel economy, and low emissions. All-wheel drive is available, and it's a valuable addition in the Snowbelt. The AWD system uses an active transfer case that normally sends 40 percent of the power to the front wheels, 60 percent to the rear, maintaining a more rear-wheel-drive feel. But in slippery conditions the system can apply all of the torque to either axle, maximizing the CTS's ability to find traction. The CTS and CTS-V feature sophisticated suspension systems developed, among other places, at the famous Nurburgring race track in Germany. Even the standard suspension delivers a good balance of handling response and ride comfort. The ride is always comfortable, but always well damped and never mushy. Steering is as fluid, as accurate and as nicely weighted as that in any sedan in the world. The CTS feels solidly put together, and it's quiet underway. The cabin is attractive, comfortable and space efficient, and everything is easy to operate. The Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround audio upgrade sounds fantabulous. The Cadillac CTS-V has a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that makes 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet of torque, offered only with rear drive. It's one fast car. Cadillac reports a top speed of 179 mph, and when we tested the CTS-V at sinewy Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California, its lap times were nearly as quick as the NASCAR Sprint Cup racecars that compete there. Then we drove it away, coddled in quiet civility and superb audio. The V series is tip of the CTS line-up, starting just under $63,000. Still, a buyer can find a CTS sedan with the upgrade V6, essential luxury features, the audio upgrade and navigation for less than $45,000, maintenance included for 50,000 miles. It's a luxury-class value that's hard to overlook. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComWalkaroundThe Cadillac CTS might be the most appealing evolution of Cadillac's chiseled, Art & Science styling theme. It's more adventurous, perhaps less cookie-cutter inspired, than its organically shaped import-brand competition. Yet the CTS looks both classy and handsome. The CTS line is often compared to compact luxury sedans like the Mercedes C-Class or BMW 3 Series, and that may be a function of similar pricing. By exterior dimensions, the CTS is actually as large or slightly larger than mid-size models like the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class. The Cadillac's impression of a more compact size probably speaks well of its overall design. The CTS sedan and the new Sport Wagon are identical from the front bumper to about the middle roof pillar. The egg-crate grille design for V6 models is common across Cadillac's lineup. Vertically stacked headlight clusters make heavy use of LED (light-emitting diode) technology, which delivers lots of light and allows lots of style with little electrical load. The air vents or extractors near the trailing edge of the front fenders have been re-designed with a more open appearance for 2011. The CTS wagon might be more handsome than the sedan, if only because its proportions are almost perfectly balanced. The integrated spoiler at the rear edge of the wagon's roof serves as both an aerodynamic device and the center high-mount brake light. The standard power liftgate can be operated with either the key fob or a switch at the rear of the car. A simple dial inside the gate allows its opening range to be adjusted, from just-above-roof height for short folks or tight garages to nearly vertical upward extension. The high-performance CTS-V models get unique, functional styling features, starting with larger wire-mesh grille work above and below the front bumper. This doubles the amount of air flowing into the engine bay, increasing cooling capacity for the engine, transmission and front brakes. An aluminum power-dome hood provides a slight bulge to accommodate the supercharged V8 underneath. Huge Brembo brakes, wedged into thin-spoke, 19-inch forged wheels and extra-wide tires, comprise one of the most engaging visual elements on the car. The big wheels aren't reserved for the CTS-V models, however. For 2011, Cadillac offers 19-inch wheels with all-season tires on all CTS sedans and wagons, including those with all-wheel drive. Wheel options range from 17 to 19 inches, and from painted to highly polished. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComDriving ImpressionThe Cadillac CTS is cast in the mold of a classic European sports sedan, and it's formed particularly well. It compares nicely with its luxury import-brand competition, and in some respects beats the competition on its own terms. The CTS is responsive, lively and athletic. It handles as well as the best European sedans, yet it's also comfortable, smooth and quiet. It delivers a good mix of interior space, substance and manageable exterior dimensions. With a wide range of engine, suspension and tire/wheel packages, and optional all-wheel-drive, the CTS wagon and sedan can satisfy a wide range of needs and tastes. Both V6 engines employ the most up-to-date control and materials technology, with dual overhead cams, variable valve timing and high-pressure direct fuel injection. As a result, they are both responsive and lively. The direct injection gives both extremely good throttle response, with more fuel efficiency and lower emissions. The 3.0-liter V6, with 270 horsepower, is a fine base engine, although it doesn't match the torque of the upgrade 3.6-liter V6. Somewhat surprisingly, there is little or no penalty in fuel economy with the larger engine, so if the additional expense is not an issue, we have to recommend the 3.6, most especially when choosing the optional all-wheel drive. With 304 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, the 3.6-liter is ready to go out and play anytime the driver wishes, delivering a solid combination of power, fuel economy and assertive sound when the throttle is opened all the way. We love the fact that Cadillac offers all CTS models with a manual transmission, regardless of how many buyers actually choose one. We found the 6-speed manual has easy, smooth clutch action and requires only a light touch on the shift lever to change gears. It's a good choice. The 6-speed automatic is responsive in full automatic mode, rarely stuttering in its gear selection or balking when it's time to shift down a gear or two. It's also very quick and positive to shift manually, up or down, with a little bit of throttle blip on the downshifts to keep the drivetrain happy and the tires from skipping and chirping. The choice comes down to personal preference. We liked both transmissions, though our affection for the automatic increases with the 3.6-liter V6, thanks to that engine's additional torque. Steering in the CTS is excellent: very accurate, with good feel and a nice, weighty demeanor. This, perhaps surprisingly, is one area where it surpasses some of its European competitors, which are still sorting through the introduction of fuel saving electric power-steering pumps. The CTS steering system uses a forward-mounted power rack-and-pinion that pulls, rather than pushes, the steering arms. (It pulls on the steering arm of that front tire which will be on the outside in the turn, so in a right-hand turn it is pulling on the left-side steering arm, placing that side in tension rather than compression.) The brakes are excellent, too, equipped with advanced electronic controls and Electronic Brake-force Distribution. They provide impressive stopping power, with almost no fading in truly aggressive use, in a car that approaches two tons of mass. For all its steering, cornering and handling prowess, the CTS doesn't exact a stiff penalty in noise or harshness over the road. Even the base car is well damped, so the ride is smooth but not floaty. If the optimal balance of handling response and ride quality is the priority, we recommend a CTS with Cadillac's optional Magnetic Ride Control variable suspension. Originally developed by GM, and billed as the world's fastest-reacting suspension technology, MR has since been adapted by several manufacturers, most prominently Ferrari. In all cases, the CTS feels very solidly put together. It's quiet inside in all circumstances, expect when the gas pedal is floored. The standard 17-inch all-season tires are quietest of all, though they lack the ultra-sharp steering response of some the larger performance-tire upgrades. All-wheel drive is optional on CTS sedan, wagon and coupe models. Even in ideal conditions, AWD makes the CTS feel extra stable, and it enhances driver confidence on winding roads. While it comes with a slight weight and fuel-mileage disadvantage, the advantages of all-wheel drive in sloppy weather or big rain are substantial. The driver of a CTS Sport Wagon will have a difficult time finding any dynamic distinctions from the sedan. The wagon is just as smooth, precise and well-planted. On the road, the only issue is rearward visibility. The wagon's wider rear roof pillars and upright rear window narrow the scope of the view through the rearview mirror, so it's a little harder to identify what's approaching from behind. Driving a CTS-V model raises the experience to another level. The CTS-V supercharged V8 is different from the V6s, with an old-school cam in the engine block and push-rod operated valves. Yet that shouldn't be taken as a problem, because the CTS-V's 6.2-liter V8 is thoroughly modern in operation and performance. The CTS-V models deliver a remarkable combination of sporting entertainment and coddling everyday transport. The steering feels more natural and satisfying than what's found in a lot of sports cars. Clutch and brake action are better than any Cadillac ever, and better than the super-tuned luxury hotrods from some European manufacturers. Despite a substantial increase in pavement grip, thanks largely to its extra wide, sticky performance tires, the CTS-V's standard MR variable suspension never feels too harsh. At two thirds of its 179-mph published top speed, the CTS-V sedan is as stable as granite. And boy oh boy, that engine. It's a feast of visceral excitement at just about any speed up to its 6200-rpm redline, if you can afford the gas. Its supercharger is very quiet in operation, and it keeps pumping acceleration-building torque at high revs. The CTS-V scoots from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds, but there is a ton of acceleration no matter how fast it's already going. There's so much torque that gear selection, road or engine speed almost don't matter. Step on it anywhere, at any speed, and the CTS-V flat flies. Still, the CTS-V's most valuable asset is its level-headed approach to the business of driving. It's a big car, with a slight bit more weight over its front wheels, but it takes some cruel treatment to make the CTS-V bite. In a sense its unflappable, except that unflappable implies restrained, and the CTS-V is always lively and fun. Its stability control system is anything but a straight jacket, allowing both ends of the car to slide a little before the electronics go to work. Bottom line, the CTS-V's strength is the same as the CTS's in general, only dialed up a notch or two. It's the satisfying, integrated experience in the driver's seat that impresses most. It just happens to be one of the absolute fastest sedans in the world. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorAs Cadillac has steadily improved its CTS line-up, the interior has definitely kept pace. There are several small but welcome enhancements for 2011, including an update for GM's OnStar telematics system. With introduction of its ninth-generation control software, OnStar's voice recognition capability has been substantially improved. Inside the CTS sedan and wagon, the basic theme is black with brushed metal and chrome accents. It's very contemporary, very attractive and generally space efficient. Optional Sapele wood, available in several packages, replaces the standard satin metallic trim. It's heavily grained, and adds a warmer, less technocratic finish. The dashboard is fairly low and away from the front seats, leaving an airy, unhindered space in the front half of the CTS cabin. The hand-stitched center console blends seamlessly into the center stack of controls, creating a sport-cockpit ambience for the driver and front passenger, without compromising breathing space. We found the CTS to be a nice place to sit and take a drive. The driver feels secure and comfortable, and the front passenger enjoys a feeling of ease, confidence and luxury. Visibility in the sedan is unfettered in all directions, though in the wagon the rear glass is smaller and a bit more restrictive. It creates a narrow view through the rearview mirror. Fortunately, a rearview camera is available for the CTS wagon. For 2011, the back-up camera is also available on the sedan, and standard on CTS-V models. The rearview camera works great on cars with navigation systems. On CTSs without navigation, the camera image is projected on a very small LED screen hidden in the rearview mirror. It's much harder to see details with the small screen. The front bucket seats are comfortable, with enough side bolstering to keep the CTS driver snug and in place behind the wheel, even during some enthusiastic driving on central California's windiest, curviest roads. A Recaro sport seat option is available on all models, with 14 different adjustments and bolsters that can be pumped up for hard driving, then deflated for cruising. They're suitable even for race track use, but generally quite hard. Unless a driver regularly attends track events, he or she will be better served by the standard CTS seats. We appreciated the range of adjustment with the power seats and the power steering column. The tilt-and-telescope column offers ultimate comfort and allows a proper driving position. The CTS instrument package is complete, easy to read, and graphically appealing. The center stack is particularly well done, both attractive and easy to use, with some interesting readout placements here and there. With the navigation system, and its combination of touch-screen and hard-button controls, the CTS offers one of the better driver/machine interfaces in current luxury cars. The upgrade Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround audio system has a 40-gigabyte hard-drive for media storage, an iPod connector and USB port, and it offers the ultimate in musical enjoyment. Using the navigation screen, it's easy to switch back and forth between the three broadcast and three stored-music formats by simply touching the screen, and the blue display is large enough to be read from the back seat. It's one of the best, most fun-to-use sound systems available. In comparison, many other luxury cars have audio systems that are fussy or difficult to operate. CTS-V models have a few extra sporting touches inside, starting with a thick-rimmed steering wheel that can be covered with synthetic suede. It's one of our favorites in any automobile. The dead pedal, which allows the driver to brace the left leg, is great for enthusiastic driving. Subtle V badging inside reminds passengers that the owner has anted up for the super-performance package. The rear seat offers enough room for two adults approaching six feet in height. The rear outboard seats are carved out like buckets, and quite comfortable, but the flip side is a narrow, flat plateau in the middle section. It's not a place anyone over 12 will want to sit, unless the choice is walking. A switch on the back of the center console controls airflow for rear passengers, between vents on the console itself or registers under the front seats. The plastics on the front seatbacks and the rear end of the console form the weak link in interior finish. They're hard and not $40,000-plus in appearance. In the CTS wagon, rear-seat passengers might feel a bit more constricted due to the wide rear roof pillar extending rearward from their outboard shoulder. With 13.6 cubic feet of luggage space, the CTS sedan's trunk is larger than those in compact luxury sedans like the BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class, but slightly smaller than the trunk in mid-size models like the 5 Series, E-Class or Audi A6. The CTS wagon delivers 53.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the seatbacks folded, 25.4 cubic feet with the rear seat in place. That's almost as much cargo space as what's found in a compact SUV. In the wagon, the bottom of the rear seat is fixed. Yet the seatbacks fold forward easily, creating a flat load floor from almost the front seatbacks to the rear bumper, a great feature. An easy, dial-type knob allows the CTS owner to program how high the power tailgate swings open. The carpeted floor in the wagon's cargo area slides out over the bumper, exposing a shallow, rubber-lined bin that contains water from soaked boots or coolers dripping condensation, The floor also has tie-down hooks and a slide-track system that secures various accessories. Our test car had a folding dog gate that spread floor-to-headliner behind the rear seatbacks. It was a bit of a chore to install, but once in place it was truly sturdy and impenetrable to any pet we've met. Another clear response to market trends are the optional 22-inch chrome wheels, which visually plant the vehicle, completely filling the Escalade's huge wheelwells and making the standard 18-inch wheels look positively puny by comparison (though for reasons beyond cosmetics we prefer the 18-inch wheels). Particularly appreciable in colder climates are the pull-type door handles that are easy to grasp, even with gloves on. They're also more comfortable, less likely to snap away from your fingers and less likely to break a fingernail. The rear view features a modern interpretation of Cadillac's classic slim, vertical taillights, which recall the dramatic tailfins of Cadillacs of the 1960s and '70s, but are now rendered in crisp LED strips. A high-mounted, horizontal brake light with LED illumination crosses the top. But the dominant feature of the Escalade's tail is the enormous badge set within a chunky block of chrome trim. The liftgate opens and closes by pushbutton as a hatch, or glass-only for lighter items. Since the Escalade is based on a truck chassis the cargo load floor is 32.3 inches off the ground. The steering is light and reasonably precise, a nice compromise between the weight of the BMW X5 or Audi Q7 and the lightness of the Lincoln Navigator. In spite of having a live-axle rear suspension (as opposed to an independent rear suspension, as found on all the competition save Mercedes G-Class and Lexus LX570 with Land Cruiser off-road performance), the Escalade manages bumps very well, thanks to three-ton mass and the road-sensing Autoride system. Handling and body control are impressive given the Escalade's bulk, not as tight at one extreme as an X5 or GL550 in Sport mode nor as supple as an LX570 or Range Rover. Arch-nemesis Navigator doesn't offer such aggressive tires as the Escalade but works well, especially on marginal road surfaces, because its independent rear suspension is much lighter than the Escalade's. Newly optional on 2009 Escalade is Magnetic Ride Control, a system that uses a variety of sensors to measure road surface and vehicle parameters 1000 times per second and adjust the shock damping accordingly. That adjustment is done magnetically, changing the thickness of the shock fluid filled with tiny magnetic particles for maximum control of the shock. This system has been used advantageously on expensive imports and the Corvette for a few years, and is usually paired with the 22-inch wheels. The interior is very quiet, enhancing the ability to hold hushed conversation as well as hear the surround-sound system without extraneous noise. Also noteworthy is the plushest ride of almost any truck. On the optional 22-inch wheels and low-profile tires you'd expect more harshness and sharp things like parking lot speed bumps and lane divider dots, but they're muted because the sheer size of the tire means there is still some usable sidewall, the first point of any suspension system. Those vehicles with the 18-inch wheels offer even gentler ride characteristics without a corollary drop in grip, and on many trucks low-profile wheels also lower the tow rating and make winter tire or chain fitment a nuisance. All Escalades but the Hybrid are powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 403 horsepower and 417 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration is brisk for a truck, ahead of the Navigator, Range Rover, Audi Q7 and a Police Tahoe, but behind the equally practical Mercedes GL550. Other poser-mobiles like the BMW X6 V8, Infiniti FX50, and Mercedes G-wagen are all quicker. The engine has a pleasant growl under acceleration, but with the tall gearing that's about the only time you hear it. Towing is aided by this prodigious power. The Escalade models are rated to tow trailers of 7600 to 8300 pounds; that's lower than the ratings for the Lincoln Navigator and Infiniti QX56. Hitching up a trailer is made easier by the Escalade's rearview camera, which mounts in the liftgate to provide a view behind the vehicle when backing up. What the camera sees is projected onto the navigation screen. It eliminates jumping out of the truck repeatedly to get the ball lined up under the trailer tongue and useful when backing up close to another object. It can also help the driver spot a child behind the vehicle when backing up, potentially avoiding a tragedy. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts imperceptibly except during full-throttle acceleration; it's tuned for mileage so it up-shifts quickly and needs a firm shove on the gas pedal to downshift. A Tow/Haul mode holds gears longer, or the driver can select gears manually via a button on the column-mounted shift lever. The multi-information display in the instrument cluster clearly displays the selected gear. All-wheel drive is available. It's a full-time system oriented around sure-footed traction on slippery pavement, rather than creeping through boulder fields or climbing steep grades. There is no low-range gearing. It works well in slushy conditions with inconsistent grip, improving handling stability and traction and helping the driver better control the vehicle. We demand it for winter weather, but it's a great aid in hard rain or on oily pavement or wet leaves or on gravel or dirt roads or in mud. The brakes are powerful and quite responsive, more than up to the task of bringing the big truck to a halt with little drama and surprisingly little dive because of the Autoride damping. The pedal feel was good, if not as pleasingly firm as its German competitors. ABS and electronic brake force distribution come standard for stable braking while turning or when the grip is inconsistent. StabiliTrak electronic stability control system manages wheel slip by applying the brakes at the slipping wheel without interrupting power deliver to the wheels with grip. StabiliTrak also helps maintain stability in corners by braking individual wheels when the vehicle's path doesn't match the driver's intentions. It works well and is not as intrusive as some Japanese systems or the G-Class that can not be defeated at more than 37 mph; it is also no substitute for common sense and doesn't make the Escalade any lighter. Excepting the Hybrid, every 2009 Escalade tested to date scores EPA ratings of 12/19/14 on gasoline (city/highway/combined). Some of the competition have slightly better combined ratings but they're all thirsty and will dip into single digits in urban crowds, working hard or towing. The Escalade Hybrid features GM's two-mode, gas-electric hybrid propulsion system developed in conjunction with other automakers. It combines a 6-liter V8 tuned specifically for hybrid use with a 300-volt battery pack and dual electric motors encased in a common housing with a conventional four-speed automatic transmission. When the full V8 output is not required the engine can operate on four cylinders to save a nominal amount of fuel, and if power requirements are very low the truck may run up to 30 mph on electric drive only. In most instances the gasoline engine stops whenever the Escalade does; electric drives run the power steering, air conditioning and so on so the only driver clues are the auto stop indication on the tachometer, lack of engine noise, and the truck does not try to creep while sitting in Drive. Essentially the hybrid system takes energy otherwise turned into heat by the brakes and stores it as electrical energy, to be used later to help get the vehicle going again. It is all fully automated and which part(s) are being used to drive the truck can be monitored on the navigation display. This is why the Hybrid's primary fuel economy advantage is in the city cycle (20/21 2WD). It drives much like a regular Escalade in some respects, same twist-key to turn it on, same steering feel, same gasoline fill-up, and markedly different in others. The engine doesn't automatically start when the car is on and when it does it is quieter and felt as a small momentary vibration, the brakes are more responsive (plan on some bobble-head initial test drives) because they are a trigger controlling the rate of battery pack recharging, and you're being most economical when the efficiency gauge is on the left, or lowest side, of its scale. The Hybrid adds thousands of dollars and roughly 450 pounds to an Escalade, lowers tow rating by about a ton (figure 4,500-4,700 pounds if the Escalade is loaded), and comes standard with 22-inch wheels and Magnetic Ride Control. Driven back-to-back with a non-hybrid you may notice the Hybrid feels heavier. Hybrid Escalades are also offered with 4WD that has an auto setting for on-road use like the standard Escalade's all-wheel drive system but also has low-range gears for maximum effort like deep sand or rocky terrain. Frankly, we can't see any Escalade Hybrid owner testing the front air dam in such a manner, and unless you're towing something there are plenty of more efficient people carriers but they don't make a fashion statement. If you are in need of towing ability and good mileage all around, the diesels from Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and VW offer EPA ratings up to 18/25 and tow ratings up to 7700 pounds. When we drove the Escalade's sister-hybrid Tahoe, a standard gasoline Yukon (GMC's Tahoe) and a Mercedes-Benz GL-class back-to-back over a mixed course of city stoplights to freeway cruising, the hybrid averaged 19.8 mpg, the non-hybrid in the mid-16s and the diesel 23.4. At the time, diesel fuel was the cheapest at the Southern California pump, about 5% less than gasoline. The Generation 8.0 OnStar system, with a one-year Directions and Connections service plan, includes the Advanced Automatic Crash Notification system, making crash data available to emergency services so they can potentially dispatch the appropriate life-saving personnel and equipment to crash scenes faster. If the vehicle is in a crash that activates an air bag, the OnStar system automatically notifies an OnStar Advisor, who will check on the occupants and summon emergency help if no one responds. Escalade comes standard with seven-passenger seating, with second-row bucket seats separated by a center console, with a three-passenger, third-row bench behind it. The five-passenger EXT and eight-passenger Hybrid are offered only with a three-across bench seat in the second row, which is available on some other Escalades at no charge. Escalade ESV adds more than a foot of space between front and rear axles, so the rear side doors are much longer. This allows the side windows to go all the way down into the doors, and makes entry to the third row much easier; second row riders will still have to turn their feet to get them between seat and door post. Third-row legroom and cargo area are similarly improved. Though step-in is somewhat high, expected for a full-size SUV, running boards ease the process and the reward is a high seating position. Outward visibility over the open dash is very good, although the side pillars are an inch or two thicker than some luxo-utes and make blind spots large enough for a motorcycle or small car on approaching bends. Rear visibility is good as well with decent wiper coverage and no center seat headrests. Interior fit and finish is very nice. The mix of soft, padded materials, genuine aluminum accents, chrome details and relatively convincing faux wood combine with soft leather seats for an ambience on par with other luxury-brand SUVs in this price range. Stepping up to the Platinum models upgrades the existing leather, adds more of it, real aluminum and wood trim, and details right down to unique door sills and floor mats. The Escalade's LED-backlit gauges are clear and bright, featuring white markings and blue pointers on a black background. Between the speedometer and tachometer lies an information display that cycles through several menus via buttons on the steering wheel. The stalk controls for the turn signals and wipers have a tactile feel, as do the buttons and knobs on the radio and climate controls. Escalade comes standard with a 10-speaker (eight-speaker on EXT) stereo that features a six-disc changer that plays both CDs and audio DVDs. Bose designed the speaker system, outfitting the vehicle with 5.1 surround sound, an eight-channel amplifier and a subwoofer. XM radio comes standard. On vehicles without the navigation system, the radio panel presents audio information clearly. On vehicles with the navigation system, the radio features are incorporated into the touch screen-based interface. The latter takes a bit of familiarization to operate smoothly, but offers more functionality and fine-tuning capability once you're comfortable with it all and you won't have to consult the owner's manual to get home. OnStar route guidance is also included, for those times when getting directions from a live person is preferred or your mapping software hasn't kept up with development. The navigation system is competitive in terms of clarity and simplicity, the Cadillac-versus-Lincoln battle moving to electronics and infotainment with Lincoln's new Sync system. A rear-seat entertainment system is available, utilizing a flip-down eight-inch screen that folds down from overhead. The DVD driver itself is mounted in front, but does not play the movie in the front seats. Rear seat passengers can listen to the audio portion of their DVDs via all 10 speakers in the vehicle, the rear speakers only, or infrared wireless headsets. Order DVD entertainment in the ESV and you get a second eight-inch screen for the third seat, as well as an additional set of headphones. On Platinum models each front seat headrest houses a DVD screen and each can be controlled independently. The front bucket seats are quite nice: Comfortable, supportive, myriad power adjustments, heated, and for the driver side, his/hers memory. These are generously-sized seats for a generously-sized truck so narrow-framed drivers may find them a touch wide; the Escalade has the widest cabin of luxury SUVs. The power-tilt steering wheel may be heatable, and it is curiously offset to the right with the instrumentation. Leather (nuance in Cadillac-speak) upholstery is standard on all three rows on all models, which also covers the four-spoke steering wheel equipped with redundant controls for the audio system and cruise control. The Escalade's huge cabin benefits from triple-zone automatic climate controls: One zone for each front occupant and another tending to the rear-seating area. In the middle row, full-size adults can enjoy plenty of space in the second-row buckets; in most dimensions the Escalade is within an inch or two of competitors, with Mercedes' G and GL-Class leading in head and legroom and the Cadillac the widest. The EXT with the second-row bench seat offers roomy accommodations for two adults and adequate space for three; the EXT alone has a center position rear headrest because of the window immediately behind the seat. Escalade and ESV come standard with heated front and second-row seats while EXT gets heated front seats only. The third-row bench on the standard Escalade sits on the cargo floor and has marginal legroom, from 3-12 inches less than other luxo-utes; the standard-length Navigator has nearly three inches more third-row legroom than the extended-length Escalade ESV, so unless it's a short trip, save the third row for kids. Interior storage space is abundant. The glove box is large and the space under the armrest of the multi-level center console takes advantage of the wide cabin. Additional storage is found in pockets in the doors. The Escalade has four 12-volt power points, including one near the tailgate (EXT gets three) as well as cupholders galore. Cargo space behind the 50/50-split third row in the Escalade is on par with other luxury SUVs with three rows of seats; in other words, hauling anything but groceries will likely require the third-row seat to be folded. And while some competitors have power third-row seats that fold into the floor, the Escalade's seats must be removed for a flat floor but it has the edge in overall space. Removing the seats requires only a tug on one handle, but they are quite bulky and heavy and must be left at home to get the big cargo space. Loading cargo requires a 32-inch lift to the load floor, where tie-down hooks ease securing the load. A power liftgate is standard on Escalade and ESV. Apart from a lower tow rating of 7,500 pounds, the EXT's cargo flexibility matches that of the Chevy Avalanche. Both V8 engines feature a Multi-Displacement System (MDS), which seamlessly deactivates four of the eight cylinders depending on engine operating conditions. Adaptive cruise control, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated leather seats, heated steering wheel, power liftgate, rear seat DVD entertainment system, rear parking camera, a multimedia infotainment system with hard drive navigation system, and UConnect wireless connectivity are available. Source: Model Reviews Introduction Jeep Grand Cherokee is the flagship of the brand and for many years was the quintessential SUV. Today, the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee seats a family of five, drives well on road or off and sports classic good looks. There have been few changes for 2015 following a major refresh for 2014 that included exterior and interior upgrades, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the addition of a diesel engine. New for 2015: A new Summit California Edition appearance package is available, along with an optional Argentina Tan leather interior. Active Noise Cancellation is standard on 2015 Grand Cherokee Summit models. Engine output for the 2015 Grand Cherokee SRT has increased to 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque; and there's a new special-edition Red Vapor version. The other 2015 Grand Cherokee models carry over unchanged from 2014. The last time Grand Cherokee was completely redesigned was for the 2011 model year. Rear-wheel drive comes standard on most models. Rear-wheel-drive versions account for a small fraction of sales, and we think they miss the point, but of course they do get better fuel economy than the four-wheel-drive versions. Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are available, depending on whether the driver needs outstanding capability for rugged terrain or wintry weather, respectively. Four-wheel drive, low-range gearing, and a full-size spare tire, all required for genuine off-road activities, are available and there is a choice of suspensions. Four engines are available. Chrysler's 3.6-liter V6 engine is standard and more than sufficient for anything but heavy towing. EPA estimates for the 3.6-liter V6 with 4WD are 17/24 mpg City/Highway. A 5.7-liter Hemi V8 is available, useful for towing with 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. A Grand Cherokee with the 5.7-liter V8 and four-wheel drive is EPA-rated at 14/20 mpg. Diesel power is available. With 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, the EcoDiesel engine delivers effortless power for towing or traversing rugged terrian. The EPA estimates for the diesel with four-wheel drive are 21/28 mpg City/Highway. EPA estimates for diesels tend to the pessimistic side, counter to ratings for gasoline and hybrid vehicles, which can be optimistic. In its current form, Grand Cherokee displays a cleaner, more integrated look than in the past. You can trace some development of the Grand Cherokee back far enough that it paralleled the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, but with the latest electronics it will feel familiar to drivers of other Chrysler products. (The diesel engine hails from VM, part of Chrysler's Fiat link). If there's a safety feature you want that isn't standard, you can often get it as an option. The Jeep Grand Cherokee competes against a spectrum of vehicles including four-wheel-drives such as the Land Rover LR4, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser. Rivals also include compact-to-mid-size crossovers and niche models, and to a lesser extent, the big Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition. If you want seven-passenger seating, the closest choice is the Dodge Durango. SRT is a standalone brand within Chrysler, but we include the Grand Cherokee SRT here because it is essentially a faster Jeep Grand Cherokee for on-road use and it can be purchased at any Jeep dealership. This steroidal performance wagon competes against the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5M and X6M, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, and perhaps the Audi SQ5 or Cadillac CTS-V wagon. It's the fastest, most expensive, thirstiest Grand Cherokee, and the last one you want to use in the same sentence with off-road. It isn't a rational choice, but we don't believe choosing a car must be rational. We have irrational vehicles in our own garages and we love them. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The basic body panels on the Grand Cherokee didn't change for the 2014 facelift, but body-color trim around the wheels and revised door sills cleaned up the profile view. Front lighting, wheel sizes and styles, and body-end sections vary among the Jeep models. The shape of the Jeep Grand Cherokee shows you can build a capable-looking utility vehicle without resorting to excessive fender flaring or plastic ramp bumpers. The clearances required for off-highway travel (front, rear and underneath) are good. Note that some of the critical off-highway dimensions Jeep claims are with the front air dam removed, a few-minute job to be undertaken before you hit the nastier terrain. The front end utilizes two headlight and two foglight designs, with premium models getting LED running lights and turn-following bi-xenon headlamps. With the black plastic trim on the inside edge, we first thought Jeep might have pulled them off the Chrysler 300, but they're unique to the Grand Cherokee. Jeep's trademark grille is seven slots cut into a panel rather than a single grille, with black slats on most models. However, the Summit model's grille is lined with chrome mesh to mimic Bentley and every other pretender. There's plenty of chrome on upper trim levels, while the entry model's simpler appearance looks more appropriate for Jeep's mission statement. Some have dark tow hooks, the Overland gets chrome, and the Summit has none. At the other end, all Grand Cherokees have LED-ring taillights that echo the headlights, with clear-lens signals and backup lights that actually help the camera view. Rear lighting is very good; the bumper scuff panels vary in color, and some models have a nicely integrated cover for the tow hitch. The hatch is easy to open, powered on higher trim levels but more of an advantage for those who can't reach it when open. or as a convenience, than in effort saved. The manual version is easy, too. The glass in the hatch does not open separately as on some utilities. Laredos run a single exhaust outlet while the other models get two, regardless of engine. The bodywork between the wheels, below the door sills, is stamped No Step at the rear edge, as it looks an inviting place to stand for roof loading. Better to put a foot on the rear tire, on the door scuff plates, or the rear bumper cover. Everything below the glass on an SRT looks at least a little bit different from that of the other Grand Cherokee models. Side sills are more aggressive and fenders filled better by 10-inch-wide forged alloy wheels (and those filled with big brakes). The lights have darkened housings, the front running lights are strips in the bumper, and the chin spoiler is more prominent. A bulging hood has dual air outlets to release heat, and you'll see the hot air wafting out while sitting at a traffic light. At the back, a larger hatch spoiler and big black chrome exhaust barrels back up the SRT badge. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The 8-speed automatic transmission works well. More gears make it easier for the engines to work at the most efficient speeds and improve acceleration performance. At a mild pace, calls for downshifts are quicker and less jarring, and at cruising speeds it just lopes along. Gear changes are quick and seamless; most drivers won't realize how often it shifts. The 3.6-liter V6 is a fully competitive engine. It favors revs and horsepower over torque, which is not ideal for heavy rolling stock but not an issue with eight forward gears. Unless you plan on towing, the 3.6-liter gets the job done. Remember, semi-trucks were making do with 290 horsepower and lots of gears when Jeep was discovering round fenders. EPA estimates for the 3.6-liter V6 with 4WD are 17/24 mpg City/Highway. The 5.7-liter V8 adds a muscular exhaust note, 70 horsepower, and 130 pound-feet of torque. Top tow rating is 7400 pounds, roughly a ton more than we'd put behind something this size, and EPA mileage is 14/22 mpg (14/20 mpg with 4WD). The diesel is the way to have fuel economy and towing grunt when needed; you'd need a spreadsheet (with fun-to-drive, towing performance, highway range and other objective columns) to find the payoff point for the $4,500 option. This modern clean diesel delivers 240 horsepower but 420 pound-feet of torque, more than 2000 rpm lower on the tachometer than the gas engines. At 75 mph in top gear it is at near peak torque and just goes, whereas the others would need a drop (or 3) in gear. The diesel is hardly noisier than some gasoline engines, doesn't smoke, and gets the Jeep moving briskly with ease. The EPA estimates 22/30 mpg City/Highway (21/28 mpg with 4WD) for the diesel. Though heavy, the Grand Cherokee chassis is quite rigid, a key benefit to its feel of overall quality. When you combine a rigid chassis with a well-executed independent suspension, the result is a vehicle that feels much like the German triumvirate it competes with. Three tons of people and car are not ideal for swift directional changes, but the Jeep goes where you point it, soaks up bumps big and small, and delivers a comfortable, worry-free drive. Apart from the SRT, our favorite Grand Cherokee to drive on paved roads was a 2WD Laredo with E pack and some options. It's more than 800 pounds lighter than the tubbiest Grand Cherokee, with a lower percentage of weight on the front end, and its 18-inch tires are more compliant. Worth noting: Every high-end example we saw on 20-inch wheels wore Goodyear Fortera tires, while every lower-trim Grand Cherokee on 18-inch wheels had longer-wearing, higher-rated, more-expensive Michelin Latitude tires. We also find that many people buy a 4WD for the snow, but none of these are snow/winter tires. A set of proper winter tires on a 2WD Grand Cherokee will stop and turn better, and often climb as well, in snow and ice than a 4WD on its standard tires. Of course, the optimum winter setup would be a Grand Cherokee 4WD with snow tires. That would be a very good wintry weather setup, indeed. A short trail course demonstrated that the current Grand Cherokee will go where any previous Grand Cherokee would, unless it can't squeeze between the trees or boulders. Few owners will do this in a $50,000 bling-mobile and fewer yet will remove the front air dam to do this. But if you pop for Quadra-Drive II and the air suspension, fewer than a dozen other utilities on the market will likely be able to cover the same ground. Driving off-highway is easier with the current Grand Cherokee than with any previous version, thanks to a 44-percent better crawl ratio (axle ratio x low-range ratio x first-gear ratio), because of the 8-speed that enthusiasts will appreciate. Also helpful, on V8 models, is Hill Ascent that controls climbing speed just as Hill Descent controls downhill progress. With its massive low-rpm torque, the diesel doesn't need anything more than a steady, light throttle foot to climb. An important point to note is that the air suspension and low-range four-wheel drive are not available on the base all-wheel-drive model; plan on spending a lot more for that level of trail ability. The all-wheel-drive system on base models is meant for mild off-road use and inclement weather; low-range gearing is available as an option on Laredo E, but standard on the diesel and V8. Selec-Terrain electronically coordinates powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shifts, transfer case, traction control, and electronic stability control. What this means is that anyone following a spotter's steering instructions can drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee over extremely rugged off-road courses. The computers will do it all. The SRT uses a 391 cubic-inch V8 like that in the Challenger 392 and other rear-drive SRT sedans. With 475 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, a crisp-shifting automatic, full-time all-wheel drive and foot-wide sticky tires, it moves swiftly. Jeep didn't claim any big improvement in 0-60 time, but even without a timer, you can tell those extra gears made it quicker. Acceleration lifts the bow and braking brings nosedive, both tradeoffs for the solid roll control to keep the big, 5200-pound box stable. Don't even think of driving it off-road. Virtually every component that affects performance, be it bodywork, cabin pieces, electronic or mechanical, is addressed by SRT, resulting in a package that isn't overpowered, underbraked or unable to use its power. On the contrary, the SRT likes to be pitched into a turn where it takes a set and you simply stand on the gas and let the all-wheel drive sort out the traction; the dynamics are impressive at this price. Like BMW's X5M, Mercedes's ML63 AMG and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, the Grand Cherokee SRT proves a utility vehicle can make good time on the pavement. The Grand Cherokee gets adaptive dampers from Bilstein. That means a choice of Touring comfort, which is fine even for unknown winding road, and Sport, in which things are buttoned up tighter. Of course, the SRT carries penalties typical of super-sport utility vehicles. Gas mileage is usually closer to the EPA city rating of 13 mpg, and the tires, easily used up making a heavy truck work like a sports car, run around $475 each. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The interior has arguably become the most important part of a Grand Cherokee. It's become first and foremost a wagon or sedan replacement, with off-road adventure a secondary concern. That is a wee conundrum, since the best 4WD equipment comes only with the posh heated leather upholstery, but that's the market. Hefty price differences across the model range mean a base Laredo will neither look nor feel like a top-line Summit inside, but the Laredo has the same five-passenger seating and cargo space. More important, the materials and finishes in the Laredo seem better suited to Jeepin' and don't have the disparity between the Summit's suede-like headliner, stitched dashboard, natural-finish wood, perforated leather and plastic panels on the doors and console sides. After hours in both, we found no appreciable difference in comfort between Laredo cloth and Summit leather upholstery. The Laredo's cloth absorbed temperature extremes almost as well as the Summit's seat heating/cooling. Space is more than adequate, while headroom remains sufficient with either moonroof. The split-fold rear seats offer slightly less room, but anyone under six feet should fit comfortably. Many of them recline slightly, some are heated, and some have power points and dual USB ports. Ahead of the driver is a dog-bone shaped instrument panel with conventional rev-counter on one side and fuel level/coolant temperature on the other. Between is a 7-inch configurable display for speed and a host of lesser data. The sole drawback to a digital representation of an analog speedometer is minor needle ratcheting, like a quartz watch's second hand only faster, as it rises and falls. Virtually everything in this display is controlled by steering-wheel switches, or redundant from the central infotainment screen. The 8-speed's shifter is like an inverted putter-head on the left of the console. It requires a more delicate touch than the old gated unit, and the lighted icons are not easy to see in daylight. So, it's better to look at the dashboard display. To choose amongst the forward gears, there are shift paddles: little levers atop the horizontal spokes on the steering wheel. This isn't a new concept, but it's joined by audio controls on the back sides of the same spokes. So more than once, we changed volume or station when we really wanted a gear change. The LED lighting in the cabin works well, to erase the yellow harshness of the old days. An optional giant dual-pane panoramic sunroof opens wide to the sky. If installed, you can see the stars, perhaps better than you can see out the windows or through the rearview mirror. The generous windshield pillars, sloped backlight and rear headrests pinch the space for visibility. The location and operation of things on the center stack, such as the electronic switchbank and HVAC controls, is all good. Chrysler's Uconnect systems, big touch-screen and voice control work quite well. As a bonus, you can engage seat and steering wheel heaters before â€œOKâ€-ing the distracted-driver warnings. An SRT comes with most luxuries and features standard (may as well get the 19-speaker sound system because it weighs less than the standard stereo). However, it gets unique, thick-bolster front seats, a really hefty steering wheel (oar-thick on the bottom half), different graphics and finishes, and the displays offer more information catered to the enthusiast driver. Cargo space is rated at 36 cubic feet with rear seats up and 68 with them folded; add a bit more for longer items over the fold-flat front seat. That's about par for the midsize SUV class, but it's also within a cubic foot of a Ford Escape and smaller than a Honda CR-V, demonstrating that mid-size SUVs don't necessarily have more room than compact SUVs. There's an abundance of storage pockets and bins, including two bins under the cargo floor surrounding the spare tire. That spare may be a temporary-use model or full-size, but you won't have to lie in the snow or mud to get it out. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Jeep Grand Cherokee boasts a capable chassis, comfortable interior that's utility useful or fashion friendly, and some of the most efficient powertrains in its class. It offers the off-road capability that mid-size SUVs should deliver, along with substantial towing capability. The SRT puts the Germans on notice that there are super-ute alternatives, and this one costs $20,000 to $40,000 less. A Laredo E Off-Road is the most Jeep and the one we want most. G.R.
