Bidders with zero feedback history will not be allowed to bid Item Description:About this item Up for auction is a donated 1977 GMC El Camino SprintVIN: 5D80LR501465Odometer: 105380 We were informed that this vehicle passed CA SMOG exempt, because of its year of production. This car is located in Stateline Nevada which is approximately 100 miles from Sacramento and 60 miles from Reno. The paint is in fair condition. There are some nicks and scrapes. The interior is in fair condition. There are signs of normal wear for a vehicle of this age. This is a California body and likely better than most of the remaining GMC El Camino Sprint that remain. Production figure were 5955 in 1977. Much lower with the 250 4bbl, much lower with original two tone paint. In addition, we don't see the two tone interior very often. So, it is likely that they only made a few hundred with this color and carburetor configuration. We believe that this car was produced in Fremont and spent most of its life on the west coast. According to Staff:Runs and Drives: Yes Passed Smog: NA Transmission Shifting Smooth: Yes A/C Blowing Cold: Unknown Stereo Working: Yes Power Features Working: All Except Power Steering Fluid Leaking: NoPet Odor: No Smoking Odor: No Paint Color: Blue and WhiteInterior Color: Two tones of Blue Notes : The vehicle was driven from southern California to northern California and in the process the power steering went dry and now in need of repair. Car has the usual scratches and dings that are consistent with a 30 year old automobile. Car has a jack. The car starts and runs but the steering is extremely difficult to turn without having the power steering repaired and will have to be towed away. It can be driven onto a car carrier or trailer. The odometer reads 05380 miles. It is clear to me that the odometer has gone around at least once. Although the true mileage is not known, I have put 105830 down instead of 99999. We do our best to take pictures of all the issues/flaws, so please take the time to view all the pictures posted. Title Notes: This vehicle has a Clear California title and Blue California Plates. Buyers should verify with State they reside in for titling requirements. They may or may not be required to obtain California title prior to registering/or transferring in another State. Buyer will be provided with transfer documents sufficient to achieve clear title through CA DMV. DMV inquiry shows estimated registration fees due: Unknown. We do not conduct highway testing of our donated vehicles. There may be issues that only present themselves during regular use of the vehicle. This is a donated vehicle and, if necessary, repairs have been made to ensure that it will pass smog (if applicable) and to ensure that it is safe to drive. 1983 FJ40 ‘Resto-Mod’ Fuel-Injected V8 For Sale – THE LAST YEAR (aka Holy Grail) of the FJ40 FULL DISCLOSURE TO CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS – THIS FJ IS CURRENTLY NOT STREET LEGAL IN CA DUE TO THE GOLDEN STATES ‘HELPFUL’ BUREAU OF AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR (BAR) REFEREE’S. While this vehicle not only performs flawlessly, puts out less polluting smog than my ’09 Suburban (I have the smog tests to prove) and doesn’t have a single safety operating concern, it has failed the BAR four times in the last 2.5 years and therefore I’m giving up (three sons under age 5 and a very busy working schedule means I can no longer fight the good fight w/ the bureaucrat idiots of Sacramento). Please read below (warning: very long/in-depth, but it will answer 99.9% of your questions I’m sure) for specific details and reasons why the BAR referees I’ve been dealing with have decided in their infinite wisdom why this vehicle should be restricted from getting a BAR exemption certification. The good news for any potential CA buyer is I honestly am at the finish line to get it certified, but I simply don’t have the free time needed…if after reading its history you believe you have the patience to deal w/ the BAR, I do believe it’s possible to get the vehicle legal in CA. For all the potential out-of-state buyers that don’t have to worry about the crazy smog and/or engine swap regulations of CA, this FJ is 100% ready for you to enjoy. VEHICLE DETAILS Frame-up restoration which included powder-coating frame, bumpers, etc.5.7L Fuel Injected Vortec V8 with ALL factory emission controls, catalytic convertors, O2 sensors, etc.Saginaw Power Steering Conversion (extremely tight turning radius that can be executed w/ one finger on the wheel).Disc Power Brake Conversion KitBTB Shackle Reversal Conversion (handling and ride quality are massively improved over the original FJ design).Nitro 9000 ShocksGM NV4500 Heavy Duty 5-speed overdrive transmissionVintage Air A/C & Heating systemAluminum Radiator w/ electric fanToyota 19-Spline Split-Case Transfer CaseMan-A-Fre Rear Bumper Tire CarrierLINE-X bed liner sprayed under entire body tub & throughout interior for corrosion protection and sound control.Long Range 21-Gallon Fuel TankWarn 9000I Planetary Gear WinchTuffy Center ConsolCD/AM/FM + rear speaker setupAmerican Racing 15x8 wheels (5), 31X10.5 Dunlop AT’s VEHICLE HISTORY / DETAILSOffered for sale is an incredible, fully restored and performance enhanced 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40. Professionally constructed at great expense approximately nine years ago, the vehicle was completely disassembled down to the frame and every component was rebuilt or replaced. It’s painted British Racing Green (from factory Jaguar ’00) and was reassembled using new hardware. All of the window seals were replaced (when washed, absolutely zero leaking), the seats were reupholstered and a new headliner was installed. Debate rages about exactly how many ’83 FJ40 were produced (I’ve read reports of anywhere from 299 to 350), but the simple fact is 1983 is a VERY collectible year for the FJ40 seeing as they were no longer available, nor imported, to the US after ’83. I personally have only seen a handful for sale over the years. While I love the stock look of the vintage FJ, I will admit the actual driving experience leaves a lot to be desired if you want to drive your FJ on any modern streets and/or freeways. Because of those points, I simply had to have this FJ when it was listed for sale three years ago due to the extensive mechanical improvements/upgrades. Inside and outside the original design and look has been preserved (no rear wheel-well cutting has occurred), yet the major mechanical components have been updated for greater & more reliable performance. The low horsepower (aka dangerously slow to accelerate & merge onto any modern freeway) 6-cylinder engine has been replaced with a modern 5.7L Vortec Fuel-Injected V8. The weak 4-speed transmission was removed in favor of a rebuilt (to stronger than stock) 5-speed NV4500 transmission with granny low (for awesome trail or stop-n-go traffic crawling performance) and overdrive for comfortable 65+ mph freeway driving. Modern power steering, air-conditioning and a host of other upgrades and performance enhancements were also performed to make this classic FJ perform as well (or better) as any modern SUV. The vehicle runs and works perfectly and has approximately 10,000 miles on it since the restoration (odometer works and still reads the original total mileage on vehicle of 72,250). Absolutely ZERO leaks from the engine, transmission, transfer case or any other component (it’s in my garage w/ no typical “classic car drips” that notoriously accompany older car ownership). This is a smooth running, reliable FJ with impressive performance and unmatched classic looks built with great pride and care over a three year period. Over $75,000 has been invested in the purchase, restoration and performance upgrades to the vehicle (and I’ve got a massive box full of every receipt to prove the parts and cost that went into the build). MY HISTORY WITH THE FJ + CA BAR REF’s As previously mentioned, I purchased this vehicle almost three years ago. I have always admired the looks & history of the FJ40 and have had it on my “Bucket List” of must-own vehicles since I was a young boy. My only dilemma was the fact I wanted a classic looking FJ, but preferred to have modern driving reliability and speed associated with the “Resto-Mod” culture of vehicle builds today. Anyone that follows the FJ world knows those desires pose two challenges; 1) They are rare to find already built, and 2) If you’re lucky to find one (usually built by one of the known restoration/upgrade performance shops) they are pushing 6-figures. While I can appreciate those builds, I just couldn’t bring myself to pay $80K+ for a “modern” driving FJ40. So when this vehicle came on the market in my price range, I had to have it. The only issue was it was built by a father & son team out of state (built in Minnesota, then the father moved to Michigan) that didn’t have to deal with the CA regulations associated with post 1975 cars and engine swaps. Before I purchased the vehicle, I spoke many times with the son who happened to be located in Northern CA and owned a number of AAMCO shops. Needless to say he was a “car-guy” and living in CA understood my concerns with purchasing the vehicle and getting it certified for CA street use. He was also a huge FJ fan (and owner) himself and assured me since the car was setup with all factory emissions in place, it shouldn’t be too difficult to certify it via the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) process. We knew there would no doubt be a few hurdles, but nothing that would ultimately be a show-stopper. To back up the assertion, he graciously offered to have me send the vehicle to him in NorCal, where he would store it in his shop and deal with the BAR inspections and take care of any issues that the referee might come up with for corrective actions. I therefore purchased the vehicle from his father and had it shipped to his son’s shop outside of Sacramento. It would be next to impossible for me to summarize almost three years of phone calls, emails and general history of what we went through (needless to say we’ve become friends through the process as we attempted to “Fight the Man” together), but to give you a general idea of the craziness we have been dealing with, I will list some of the NorCal BAR Ref disqualifiers over the course of the 3 inspections: Rear evap sensor missing (fine, that’s easy, the engine worked fine w/o it and in Michigan it wasn’t required, so we agreed to install another sensor and get the computer re-flashed).Failed because the “Check Engine” light on the dash wasn’t labeled (fine, we threw a sticker on).Headers were not factory to the ’96 Vortec engine (okay, we swapped to stock exhaust manifolds).K&N air cleaner didn’t have the model # sticker anymore; so we had to replace the perfectly working system with a new one so he could verify the model (okay, now it’s getting a little crazy…but wait…the insanity will grow…)The location of the cat was not correct since it needed to line up with that of the ’96 Tahoe schematic (since that’s where the engine came from). What? How could all the exhaust pipe & cat location be the same as on a Tahoe when obviously we are dealing with a Toyota FJ frame? That took a few rounds to finally resolve and eventually he signed off on the corrections we made (oh yeah, we still had to redo the exhaust pipes from the exhaust manifold to the cat in order to change a few inches…as if those few inches of hollow pipe really matter…but I digress). We had to re-flash the computer a few times in order to eliminate a bunch of codes. Even though the vehicle ran perfectly, the testing showed fault codes for things like ABS & anti-theft systems associated w/ the Tahoe (which obviously are not on the ’83 FJ). So we sent the computer to a few custom shops out of state for the flashing. Then when we resolved the codes, the Ref failed us because the flashing was “Performed by a shop out of the state of CA.” What?!?! That was the first time he mentioned that, so back to the drawing board. Another flash in CA, yet he failed us again because, “The CA shop is not an approved Chevy dealership.” Are you kidding?!?! Since we didn’t want to have to re-flash yet again (remember, this is a perfectly working/running vehicle), we were able to get him to approve the flash by getting documentation from a local GM dealership that put in writing the flash was stock & matched with the VIN/ENGINE/TRANS of the system we had.Failed us because the speedometer was reading off from actual speed. When we asked for clarification, the initial response was “Can’t be greater than 5mph error.” When we pushed to see where that regulation was in writing, he wouldn’t/couldn’t produce it, yet still stood behind the fact we would fail. When we corrected the error to 5mph on another visit, the SAME Ref said it was still too high and it needed to be, “3mph or less error.” You can imagine the frustration that came! So an adjustment gear drive was installed in order to correct that issue. Finally, the latest failure came when they ran the computer checks to verify all the monitors have set. Sure enough we still had 1 evap monitor that wouldn’t set (again, even though the vehicle is running/performing flawlessly), it didn’t matter. We consulted multiple smog shops and even found per the BAR website/regs for passing emissions tests, that ’96-’99 vehicles can have up to ONE monitor that hasn’t set and will still pass smog. That info wasn’t good enough for him; he wanted ZERO issues and ALL monitors set.I’m leaving out a plethora of even more trivial issues no doubt but seeing as I wasn’t physically involved and it’s been so many years, I no doubt am not doing justice to how many hoops had to be jumped through. At that point in time (Sept 2015 & our 3rd BAR failure in the last 2+ years), I had had enough and decided I would bring the vehicle to SoCal and run it through my local BAR in Huntington Beach. I was convinced the Ref we dealt with in NorCal (the same “gentleman” for all 3 failures) no doubt had his high school sweetheart and/or wife run off with an FJ40 owner years ago and therefore absolutely refused to see another FJ on the road. So I traveled to NorCal, picked up the car and drove it back to SoCal in one day. Here I was, the owner of the vehicle for almost 3 years and driving (and more shockingly seeing) it for the first time. As expected, it performed flawlessly, didn’t miss a beat during the 6+ hr drive to SoCal. I have been using it for short around-town errands for the past few months, but have limited my time w/ it on the roads as obviously I’m concerned with getting pulled over without legal CA plates. I was able to get a BAR appointment for Dec 24th to see if my luck would be any different. And wouldn’t you know it, the Ref I encountered on Xmas Eve must have been related to The Grinch himself. I kid you not, when I pulled up for my 7am appointment and introduced myself and asked him the customary, “How are you doing?” He literally scowled at me and replied without even the slightest hint of friendliness, “I’ve been better! Pull the car into the bay and tell me what you’ve done since your last failure.” It was classic…where do they find these winners?!?! As you can probably guess, the results were no different. My frustrations lie in the fact that he mentioned the following issues, even though a number of them were supposedly resolved w/ Ref #1: He didn’t agree with the placement of the rear O2 sensorHe wasn’t sure he would agree the front exhaust pipe to cat was the correct lengthHe didn’t care for the location of the air filterHe too wanted to see all monitors set (even though he conceded CA smog laws for a ’96-’99 will allow up to 1 monitor not set, he wanted a perfectly clear system) Therefore, I left dejected and finally beaten. While I would love to keep fighting these bureaucratic idiots, that believe the letter of the law trumps the spirit, I have to concede I simply do not have the patients or time anymore. I debated taking the FJ to Texas where my father lives and registering it out there (where DMV actually cares about normal things like the working e-brake, lights, flashers, horns and the fact the vehicle is safe to operate on the Texas roads), but alas I didn’t want to be driving a TX registered car in CA for any period of time. Therefore, I’ve decided to put this amazing FJ up for sale and let another owner get to actually experience the vehicle on a daily basis. While I know this has been a lengthy description & history, let me end by telling any prospective buyer all the remaining things I would do to the vehicle if I kept it. As with any older car (even one that is essentially modern, yet restored a decade ago), there are some minor issues that I personally would eventually address. Nothing is a “show-stopper” for me to use this vehicle as-is right now and as I’ve said, it’s been as reliable as any modern SUV in my collection. But if I kept it, I would do the following: Install the rear jump-seats and reupholster front/rear to match. The jump-seats are included in the purchase, but there are currently speakers installed where the rear seats should mount. Also, there is a tear on the driver seat upholster (on surface - does not go all the way through material) that I would correct when I matched the rear seats.Install front cabin insulation & carpet. While I appreciate the utility of the spayed liner bed, I had no visions of using this FJ as a hard-core off-roader. 99% of the time it would be used for street & highway driving and trips to the beach. Therefore, I would prefer to “soften” up the front cabin by installing the insulation and carpet.Install 33” BFG’s. The 31’s are a little too small for my liking, there’s plenty of clearance and eventually (say 10K miles) the 31’s are going to need replacement. I would also probably eventually swap out the wheels for a more classic, traditional FJ steel wheel & hubcap. There are 2 small rust spots (quarter & silver dollar in size) on the driver rear quarter. The spots were disclosed to me when I bought it and they have not grown any bigger. It would be a simple and small sand/re-spray job to correct those couple of minor visual blemishes. Not a huge deal, but I would clean it up just the same.Vintage AC system needs recharging & power – all components installed per the Vintage AC system, but currently not running. AC is never a big deal for my beach cruiser classics, but since this is a modern AC system, I would spend some time charging it as it’s obviously not some vintage system that would require a bunch of parts & work to get functional again. No doubt sitting for multiple years and not being used has taken its toll on the coolant in the system. If you’re interested, please call me directly at 714.756.0993 to discuss. I REFUSE to answer a laundry list of question via email, so don’t even bother sending them to me…and all you SCAMMERS out there, please spare yourself & me the trouble of trying to contact me. I’ve sold enough classics over the years that I’ve seen every one of the current scams and I’m too busy and impatient to deal with you. If you’re a seriously interested party, by all means call me and we’ll talk about the car. But if you’re simply the typical “internet tire-kicker” let’s not play the games and talk when we both know you have no intention of buying (or the wife is never going to sign off on you buying this awesome classic…please seek permission to buy from The Boss BEFORE calling me). Also, I’m downsizing my stable, so please no offers for any kind of trades. I’m asking $39,000, but open to reasonable offers. I will NEVER be insulted or get upset over an offer; I just can’t guarantee I won’t laugh. I have a clear title in hand that will be turned over to the new owner to fill out as he/she sees fit (enough said J). I’m sure I’ve left out info, so please call me directly to ask specific questions that I didn’t address in the above novella. Good luck.

The all-new Nissan GT-R is the fifth generation of this venerable Japanese supercar, but this is the first generation available to North American enthusiasts. Well known to video gamers in this part of the world as forbidden fruit, the GT-R brings new levels of performance and technology to Nissan's line-up. Powered by a hand-built 480-hp twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6, the GT-R makes good use of all that thrust through a paddle-shifted, rear mounted six-speed dual clutch sequential gearbox and electronic all-wheel drive. Roads and racetracks are handled by an electronically controlled independent suspension that adjusts itself to changing conditions, or allows the driver to chose a preferred setting. Handling is also assisted by 20" forged alloy wheels surrounding 15" cross-drilled Brembo brakes at all four corners. The interior features performance bucket seats, a console mounted starter button and a centrally mounted video screen that can display several pages of mechanical and driving information as well as navigation and audio. Source: Model Reviews Introduction Nissan has been selling the Skyline in Japan for almost 20 years, long enough that the first one to make it to the U.S. officially is the fifth generation. This fifth-generation of the affordable supercar comes to America as the Nissan GT-R, retailing for about $70,000. The Nissan GT-R boasts performance of far more expensive cars. Its super slick, all-wheel-drive dutifully and invisibly channels the engine's 480 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque to whichever tires offer the most grip. This is most remarkable when enlisted in the Launch Control algorithm, which lets drivers make like Michael Schumacher in their own Stop Light Grands Prix. A twin-clutch, sequential-shifting, six-speed manumatic transaxle is competitive with the best prancing horse logoed car's and the equal of or better than the best of either Stuttgart or Munich. This car is so good, so much fun to drive, whether slogging and, when the opportunity presents, darting through rush hour traffic or blurring telephone poles on empty back roads. The GT-R comes with every comfort and convenience a driver and passenger need, and most of what a driver and passenger could want. The sports car-like cabin is climate controlled. The navigation system responds to voice commands. Behind the navigation system's LCD lie 11 pages of data, graphs and virtual gauges that tell the tale on more of the car's dynamics than most drivers can, or want to, be bothered knowing. All this makes even the infernal red start/stop button that takes the place of a perfectly functional key tolerable. At least, most of the time. Nissan plans to sell about 2400 GT-Rs through 700 specially certified Nissan dealers, a super car fully homologated and certified to U.S. safety and emission standards and ready for everyday use just like any other Nissan the dealer sells. But that's about the extent of the similarities between this ultra-refined supercar and the Altimas, Versas, Maximas and, yes, 350Zs that yearn to share a little of the GT-R's glow. The time may come, if Nissan survives as a major player in the U.S. market despite the shrinking new car market and some not-so-minor missteps by its French management, that the GT-R will be seen not just a stupendous achievement as a legitimate entry in the supercar ranks, but also as nothing less than the salvation of the brand. One car gave that kind of spark to Datsun. The GT-R may for Nissan. The Nissan GT-R comes in one body style, a two-door, 2+2 quasi-coupe. There's also but one powertrain offered, a twin-turbocharged, 3.6-liter V6 driving all four wheels through a six-speed, twin-clutch, sequential-shifting, automated-manual transaxle. Shifts are managed either by computer or by steering column-mounted magnesium paddle shifters. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround Aesthetically, the Nissan GT-R is neither a modernized E-Type nor a resurrection of the earliest Z cars, way back when they wore the Datsun badge. This car has none of the natural beauty of those cars, which looked like they'd gone directly to the showroom from whimsical sketches on a dinner napkin. What it does have is a sense of polished purpose, of function dictated by the need to slip through the air with minimal disturbance blended with a form shaped to let the eye flow over its lines and curves just as easily. Sort of a svelte Bauhausian ethic. All is not perfect, however, as here and there a styling cue hints of other, seriously lower level sporty and sports cars in a way that subconsciously jars the senses. The grille design evokes the new Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. It's almost cause to wonder whether the stylists for the two cars studied under the same professors at design school. The GT-R's grille design, however, does multi-duty. Besides channeling air to the intercooler, radiators and climate control system's heat exchanger coils, the design enhances front downforce. The lower grille opening houses two, jet intake-like, side-mount scoops that cool the massive vented and drilled front brake discs and their full-floating, six-piston Brembo calipers. A polished, black, understated but effective chin spoiler extends beneath the front bumper like a lower lip. High-relief, lift-countering indents wrap around the lower corners of the front fenders. Pentagonal headlight housings fill the top of the fenders. Two functional NACA vents straddle the hood's power bulge. The front fenders give the GT-R a broad-shouldered presence leading to a narrower, kind of pinched waist body section; think less dramatic Mazda RX-8. Narrow extractor vents that vacuum lift-inducing airflow from under the front end fit into a tall slot between the fenders' trailing edge and the side body panel. An awkward GT-R badge tries to imply motion by swooping back from the top of the vent but only serves to mar the sleek flanks. Fully recessed door handles pivot out a finger grip when the dimpled rear portion is pressed; immediately aft of that is an angled, rectangular button that unlocks the door, provided the RFID fitted key fob is within range. Frameless door windows and fixed rear quarter windows taper sharply toward the rear, denying much-needed headroom for entering and exiting the car. One bystander said he thought Mustang at his first sight of the side windows and top, what Nissan calls an aero blade canopy roofline. The rear quarter panel balloons outward from the narrower mid-section just enough to cover the rear tires. The barest of a concentric blister highlights the perfectly circular front and rear wheelwells. The front end's polished black lower lip picks up after the front wheelwell and runs the length of the side body panels to the rear wheelwells, with the visual effect of masking just how close the GT-R sits to the road. Balancing the view through the seven-spoke wheels of the bright red front Brembo calipers are bright red, full-floating, four-piston rear Brembo calipers that clamp down on vented and drilled rear brake discs. The mildly rounded but mostly vertical rear fascia holds symmetrical pairs of smaller and larger taillights and a sharply recessed license plate surround. The Nissan logo on the liftgate and a GT-R badge fit the car better than the GT-R swoop on the front quarter panel, although all four are unnecessary adornments. A slim rear wing, rounded in a droop at the ends to match the rear quarter panels' tumble, rides the trailing edge of the trunk lid. More of that polished black lower panel loops around the back end, hosting matched sets of dual exhaust tips and a fully integrated, carbon fiber rear diffuser. From this viewpoint, the one most drivers will see of the GT-R, it's difficult to believe the rear track is a mere 0.4 inches wider than the front track. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Nissan GT-R is meant to be enjoyed from inside, behind the wheel, not by scanning a specification sheet or gazing longingly at it in a parking lot. And from the driver's seat, it's better by quantum leaps than all these impressive data and great styling treatments promise. The power curve is so nearly linear it's hard to believe the engine is turbocharged. Somewhere around 3500 rpm, there's the slightest bump, but it feels more like an engine coming on cam than two afterburner boosters stepping in. Shifts are quick and smooth, whether left to the transaxle's digital brain or managed by the driver's fingertips. Even with the transaxle in the R setting, which both sharpens the shifts and spreads them to higher performance points on the engine's power curve, gear changes are as certain as and less neck-snapping than those in the Ferrari F430 of a couple years ago, and with which the GT-R compares most favorably in every visceral and statistical measure, not least being price. Drivers get to choose between three settings: Normal, Comfort, or R (for Race) for the suspension, transmission shift points, and the Vehicle Dynamic Control system's various algorithms, all of which work together in an attempt to keep the car within the confines of the inviolate laws of physics notwithstanding the self-perceived prowess of the driver. Launch Control is a particularly enticing feature for drivers insisting on enjoying the GT-R to its absolute max. To engage Launch Control: Toggle up and hold the R levers for the transaxle and for the suspension until the little lights come on, and toggle down and hold the R lever for the VDC until that light comes on; the first two engage the R settings, the last turns off the VDC. Next, nudge the shift lever to the right, into the M mode. With the left foot on the brake pedal and the fingers of the right hand on the shift paddle, mash the throttle. The engine will spin up to and hold at 4500 rpm. Slip the left foot off the brake pedal and be ready to tug that shift paddle, as the engine will hit the rev limiter in first gear almost instantaneously. The rear tires will leave 10 or 12 feet of black dash marks while the traction control fights to hook them up, and then it's nothing but supremely balanced distribution of power to the tires with the best grip. It's useful for drag racing or F1-style standing starts. The GT-R is equally competent driving quickly down twisting two-lane roads as it is a pleasure chugging along in the daily commute. Its 62 inch track (distance between the wheels side to side), large tire contact patches and 53/47 front/rear weight distribution deliver almost perfect response to steering inputs, with no hint of oversteer (where the rear of the car slides out) or understeer (where the car doesn't want to turn). It tracks confidently through corners, making slight adjustments to the line in response to changing pressure on the gas pedal. It straightens esses with ease, giving the driver clear indicators when transit speeds approach inadvisable levels. The massive brakes never showed a hint of fade after miles of hard running, hauling the GT-R down time and again from high speeds to tight, first gear corners. Obviously, those lesser-populated two-lanes are the GT R's preferred habitat, but it doesn't complain about sharing a crowded urban freeway or schlepping around town on weekend errands. The all-wheel-drive does, however, scrub the front tires on slow, tight turns, particularly noticeable in parking lots. A cautionary note about ride quality: Toggle down the R lever for the suspension to get the Comfort setting. It's not that the Normal setting will have freeway expansion joints or railroad grade crossings sending drivers to the dentist to have their fillings re-glued, but the difference is substantial, and appreciated. In this measure, as well as in most others, from interior comfort to overall performance, the GT-R is on par with the best of what might be considered the competition, including the top Corvettes and Porsches and the BMW M6. This is a hot rod, however. There are noticeable mechanical sounds from the clutches in the transaxle. First thought is that something back there needs some tightening. But after a while, when the link between the clicks and the gear changes becomes obvious, that initial worry fades. Those are the sounds of a high-performance mechanical beast. Road noise and wind noise are about what we expect in a modern supercar: There, but not intrusive. The stereo masks the most audible. The GT-R is not the most fuel-efficient car on the road, which is not surprising. EPA estimates are 16/21 mpg City/Highway. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The interior of the Nissan GT-R echoes the ethic of the exterior, again nicely blending function and form. The only features for which a control seemed at first unintuitive were those not widely available in other cars, regardless of price or market niche. The driver's seat feels form-fitted with its eight-way power adjustments. Bottom and side bolsters grip upper legs and torso with confidence. Thigh support is better than average. The front passenger seat has no height adjustment, as with most cars. This leaves the passenger peering out the front and side windows like some prairie dog popping its head up out of its hole in a field in Kansas. There's more than adequate room in front for people up to several inches taller than six feet. The rear seats are another story. Usable rear-seat legroom is zero, even with the front seats set for a 5-foot, 4-inch person. They're best considered as absorbent elements in an acoustic chamber for the Premium sound system's two subwoofers. Given the paucity of rear-seat room, there's little likelihood the GT-R will be asked to provide for more than the driver and a passenger for any length of time, so the 8.8 cubic feet of trunk space should be adequate for a long weekend road trip. At the same time, it's about right for a week's worth of groceries or a couple golf bags. Trim materials are rich without being plush or luxurious. The padded parts look hand-stitched. Front-seat bolsters are leather, insets a faux suede that's the only part that comes up a bit short on presentation. The cabin is trimmed in low-luster, finely grained plastic and satin-finished aluminum. Lower door kick panels are a low-nap fabric. Seams and trim elements fit snugly, with no misalignments or unexpected gaps. Buttons, switches and knobs give good and consistent tactile feel. Functions are all surface mounted, as in, not buried beneath some over-the-top, fancy-shmancy Super Knob perched on the center console waiting to frustrate all but the most technophile drivers. Getting comfortable with the LCD display and associated controls takes some time and effort, but they're more transparent and intuitive than they look. The stereo control head has a volume knob, a tuning knob and six buttons for station presets. Likewise with the climate control panel, which offers symmetrically placed and sized knobs and push buttons. A horizontal bar beneath the climate and stereo control panel houses levers for toggling between the three settings for suspension, shift points and VDC. Sadly, of the two power points, the most accessible for a radar detector is tucked away in the center console back between the front seats. The instrument cluster holds four gauges and the LED gear indicator. The tachometer occupies the center space, with the speedometer conjoined off to the left; interesting, in a tempting sort of way, is the layout of the numbers on the speedometer. They start with 0 mph at about the 4 o'clock position, 120 mph at 9 o'clock and 220 mph between 1 o'clock and 2 o'clock. The other two gauges, to the right of the tachometer with the gear indicator, show coolant temperature and fuel level. Readouts for the remaining engine-related vitals are accessible through the LCD display. Visibility out the front and to the sides is good. Rear quarter and back window sight lines aren't so good. That rear spoiler doesn't block enough of the rear window to obscure whether that car filling the rearview mirror is a police car or just someone in a Crown Vic. And the ballooning rear fenders encourage setting the outside mirrors at wide enough angles that the ever present blind spot doesn't hide as much as usual. Drivers can tailor the multi-layered information center to provide display data on the LCD on front/rear torque distribution; lateral, longitudinal and total overall G-forces; inputs from accelerator, brake pedal and steering wheel; lap times; as well as engine coolant temperature, oil pressure, turbo boost, and fuel economy. The driver can record this data, for example to gather data during a track session.
