The Challenger, new for 1970, received only minor changes for 1971. A Challenger convertible was chosen to pace the Indianapolis 500. It was the last time Dodge built a factory convertible, until the mid-1980s. Gone, too, was the famous Hemi after 1971. R/T models included high back bucket seats, heavy duty brakes, an R/T handling package, and G70x14 raised white letter tires. With a base price of $3,273, the Hemi option added a staggering $892 to the bottom line, ultimately leading to low production numbers and making them quite desirable to today's collectors. Amazingly, this Hemi Challenger has traveled just 64,000 miles from new. While it is one of just six surviving examples with black exterior paint, it is the sole example known that still wears its original factory finish, putting it into a category of its own. Dodge built 70 Hemi Challengers for 1971, including 58 four-speeds; according to Mopar expert Galen Govier, it is one of 49 known to exist today. Govier's 33-page report is available for inspection and is included with the sale of this Challenger. This rare Hemi-equipped Dodge Challenger is equipped with its original numbers-matching drivetrain, including the engine, transmission, and rear end. It is equipped with the A-34 Trak-Pak option, which includes a 3.54:1 Sure-Grip limited slip differential and a Dana 60 rear axle. It maintains is original interior, glass, seats, headliner, and carpeting. The car was purchased in 1971 by the owner of a speed shop in Joplin, Missouri, who used it as his personal driver and kept it on display in front of the shop to help attract business. The entire ownership trail is known, but of particular interest is Susan Willey, of Ohio, who purchased the Dodge in 1979. Interestingly, Willey raced the car at local race tracks and worked on the car herself; she maintained the car until selling it in 1993. In its current ownership, the Hemi Challenger has been stored in climate-friendly Arizona and has been well looked after. Value trends for collector cars are ever-trending in favor of examples with the best provenance and originality, as they have for generations with other fine art segments. With this example having known history, solid originality, and being black on black from the factory with a four-speed manual transmission, combined with the unending interest in the vaunted Hemi-powered Mopar muscle, this is one highly desirable collector car. So let's say you drive it around for a year or so then decide you no longer like the color, you can have the wrap professionally removed (typically $300 to $500) and your Jeep will be instantly transformed back to it's original jet black. There are literally SO many upgrades and custom touches on this Jeep it's almost impossible to remember them all. Take one look at any of the provided photo's and you will see what I mean. There's a full safari roof rack by "off camber fabrications" which is mounted on the rear removable hard top portion only. This allows you to easily remove the top in those warmer summer months without having to dis-assemble the safari rack. Just remove the top and the rack stays attached to it. Look closely and you will notice the safari roof rack mounted LED side lights. There is one simple pigtail connection which unplugs all of those lights, again making it easier to remove. This Jeep is tricked out with the very best LED lighting available. There's a full width 50" LED strip mounted on the front roof line and dual A-pillar mount LED's all by Rigid Industries. The front headlights are by JW speaker and the lower bumper mount fog lights are rigid industries LED. When you flick on all of the lights at once, it looks like a baseball stadium at night. INSANELY bright!!! There's a Rugged Ridge heat extraction sport hood with black accents & air snorkel intake as well as full custom wild boar grill, which gives the illusion of a mean, frowning appearance. We originally had the amp research hydraulic drop steps installed but we removed them for more of an aggressive look showing more ground clearance. These steps will go along to the new owner. We added Bushwacker high cut fender flares and Bushwacker side rocker threshold guard covers. Up front is a custom Warn Zeon 10-S high power winch with remote control. There's SO much more, these are just a few of the more obvious highlights. Interior: One of the first upgrades we do on these SEMA show vehicles is to immediately strip the ENTIRE interior of the vehicle out. Everything comes out, seats, carpeting, consoles, electrical, floor covers, side covers, it all get's set aside. We spray the entire inner floor portion of the Jeep in Rhino Liner. This dramatically improves road nose and sound resonance, not to mention being ultra durable and waterproof too. We installed custom Mastercraft racing bucket seats front & rear. There's a full interior trim kit by Rugged Ridge which covers the lower consoles, door sills, map protectors, steering wheel controls, upper stereo surround etc. This Jeep has the highly desirable sPOD system for all of the additional electrical and lighting. There are 6 interior roof mount switches which operate everything. There's a custom rear view mirror with color backup camera too. The upgraded factory Jeep Alpine touch screen navigation based sound system has furthermore been upgraded with JBL performance speakers so it sounds much better than stock. We added a custom interior roll cage too by off camber fabrications then color matched it to the vehicle. There's a upper dash mount Banks IQ on board diagnostics programmer installed as well. Powertrain: This Jeep has the highly desirable factory 3.6 Liter motor so it already has tons of torque & speed just as it is. However - nothing satisfies a true SEMA gear head. So of course, we stepped up in this department too. There's the Banks IQ system as mentioned above and full Banks power monster cat back exhaust with Banks cold ram air intake. This Jeep is pushing close to 330HP and trust me........ it HAULS ASS!!!! Very powerful off the line and has outstanding torque and high end power. Please look over the extensive build list below to see all of the upgrades made in the drive shafts, gearing, differential covers, high performance Amsoil synthetic fluids throughout. This is on seriously well built performing Jeep. Suspension & Lift: As mentioned above this Jeep has the 6" Long arm lift kit by Terra Flex. There's Doetsch Tech off road bypass shocks front & rear. The wheels are Rugged Ridge black finish multi spoke design. We powder coated the bead locks to match the paint perfectly so the rims look AWESOME. For the SEMA show we (had) the TSL Swamper Boggers mounted for more of the aggressive look. While they look mean, they also ride equally mean. Terrible vibration and shaking at highway speeds. After the show and media events, magazine shoots for Action 4X4 and all of it's TV and commercial commitments for Rugged Ridge & Bushwacker, we removed the big Swamper Boggers and installed a brand new set of five 37" Interco Super Swamper SS-M-16 all terrain tires. These tires look and drive incredibly well. Even at 80MPH on the interstate it drives perfectly straight and smooth. So if you notice this Jeep in any of the SEMA publications or in magazine publications, you will understand why the tires are different. It was merely done for a smoother ride. And for a slightly wider stance, we added 1.5" billet wheel spacers too. Overall this Jeep sits perfectly level and has no front or rear sag.
