With 107 chassis , Mercedes debuted a V-8 engine in the convertible lineup, which was necessary given the new SL's relative 3,400-pound weight. The first-year cars were dubbed 350SL in keeping with the model designation for Europe, despite actually carrying a 4.5-liter V-8 underhood. The fuel-injected V-8 featured an overhead cam and delivered 230 horsepower. It was paired with a three-speed automatic, with no manual transmission on offer. Suspension was fully independent and four-wheel disc braking was standard. For 1973, the car's name was revised and 450SL would be the model designation moving forward. Also revised this year was the way in which horsepower was rated, and the new SAE net meant the 450SL's power was listed at 190 hp. The following year, the 450SL grew large safety bumpers front and rear in keeping with federal regulations. Our friend Chris in sunny southern California had a few Porsches he wanted to sell. For years we had tried to buy one of his Porsches, and every time we made an offer, we fell short. He would tell us, "you can't buy the best for the same price of all the other crap out there," and he's right. All of his cars are exceptional, detailed to the max, serviced to the max and, generally speaking, the finest on the planet. While trying to buy one of his cars from him we ended up buying four. It's really hard to buy a fantastic race car, since 99.9% have been rode hard, put up wet and generally trashed, re-tubbed, beat and banged. Race cars are generally just rehabbed to get hammered again. To make one exceptional after the fact costs as much or more than any other Porsche restoration or more because of the parts. This factory RSR was in the corner and looked killer. This is the last of the air-cooled Porsche factory race cars and is a true RSR, not a fluffed-up cup car. One of only 13 (30 total in 1997) RSR's delivered to the U.S., of which maybe half haven't been re-bodied at least once, our RSR represents the cream of the crop. The body is super clean, straight and the paint is exceptional - rare for a war horse. Chris proceeded to tell us the car was campaigned the first year, then relegated to club racing for the next few years. The car hadn't been damaged and lived a great life. The engine was freshly rebuilt to sprint specs and has between 380-400hp. The factory intake was changed and Motec added strictly for performance, tune ability and ease of use. If you ever wanted a true, air cooled factory Porsche race car, this is it Porsche AG build sheet confirming WP0ZZZ99VS398072 as a real deal factory RSR included in the picture slide deck. Four owners since new: Mark Schoeppner Simon Sobrero Steven Frankel Chris O'Donnell Of the four owners, only Sobrero did any significant competing in the car. Otherwise this RSR was used for open track days. This RSR has received a new paint freshening in the factory livery white, Firnweiss (Z1Z1). The motor was rebuilt by Precision Motorwerks, Anaheim, CA. This was done by Mr. Frankel. The Motec engine logging shows approximately 10 hours of running time. The car retains the original aluminum hood. It has a fuel cell, fiberglass doors, set up for radio communications and camera recording. For Sale 1951 CHEVY Styline hotrod . This car was built by Scott Norton of Norton's Customs in Huntington Beach. The build process can be seen on his web site at Nortonscustomsteetrods.com, just click on Mark's 51 and you can see detailed photographs of the car in addition to other cars he built. This project was a partial body off restoration and extensive work was done for frame reinforcment and to set up for a 350 motor and transmission. The car has had the motor, transmission and rear end rebuilt in addition to having a new radiator, all engine accessories, carburetor etc. replaced. The rear end has 2:73 gears so the RPM's at freeway speed are reasonable. The suspension was installed by the BAGMAN in Anaheim and is a four link rear and a Mustang tubular front end along with an Accuair E-Level air ride system with sensor levers on all four corners. The car handles and drives superbly. The car has been painted in a two stage color similar to a deep Burgundy or Merlot color. The custom scallops were painted and pinstriped and then a clear gloss was painted over the work. A second pin stripping was added along with other painted features. All the custom paint work was done by Dave Wittle of California Design in Norco, CA. The car has a heater and does not have AC since I live in so cal and usually drive with the windows down. The wiring is all new with over 20 relays controlling the various components. All the bullet switches control the various electrical devices and there are 4 additional switches that are available to operate future components it they are added latter. The wheels are new by Wheel Smith and the front covers are 1953 Cadillac hub caps that have been altered to fit. The front seats are 1964 T-Bird seats covered in white leather. All the trim on the seats was removed and polished. The rear seat is stock and covered in white leather as well. The center console is a custom piece made of translucent Corian and has red LED lights placed inside the unit. The photographs on Norton's site show what the car looks like at night when the lights are turned on. All the chrome was re-plated. The top has been chopped 5", the hood has been filled and pancaked, the lights are frenched front and back, the doors are electronically operated and also have an emergency release cable installed and the drip rails have been shaved. Please note the shift knob that is on the car does not come with the car. I will provide an alternative to the new owner. I will be at the Father's day L.A. Roadster show in Pomona this Saturday, June 21, 2014 if anyone would like to see the car in person.
