For the first time since the early 1970's Chevrolet produced a Super Sport version of it's Camaro. These cars were shipped to SLP from the factory to be converted into Super Sports. All of this was authorized by Chevrolet. With the SS upgrade came one of the fastest production cars of the 90's. The cars would begin life as Z28 optioned Camaros. SLP would add upgraded suspension packages, better intake setups, better exhaust and SS badging. It has always been rumored that the first couple of hundred cars that SLP got their hands on were tweaked by hand for better performance. This would include such things as exhaust manifold polishing, etc.. If this is true, then this is one of those cars, with it being only car #50 of just a little less then 2500. Once SLP was finished, the cars were shipped out to the dealers for sale to the public. Many of these cars were special ordered through local dealerships. 1996 was the first year of the SLP SS Camaro. It was truly a significant year for Chevrolet. This year would mark a true return to performance with the production of the SS Camaro once again. This particular example has just over 88,000 original miles. This car has spent it's entire life in Arkansas. It was sold new at Nunnally Chevrolet in Bentonville AR. It still retained it's original dealer sticker on the rear of the car. With is being an Arkansas car it has no rust or corrosion issues. The car has been garaged it's entire life. It has been maintained very well and cared for throughout it's life. This car is optioned very heavily, just as many of these SS's were. These options include: keyless entry, pwr windows, lock, cruise, tilt, Bose CD, rear defog, fog lights, a/c, pwr mirrors, pwr. driver seat, leather, T-Tops, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. The SLP options included: SS badging, 17 inch SS wheels (derived from the famed ZR1 Corvette), Z rated tires, performance exhaust, embroidered floor mats, special induction hood, raised rear spoiler and I'm sure a couple other things. Needless to say this made these cars very expensive for the day. Prices would be in the very upper 20's, near 30. This would put these cars in Vette territory. There are a few known issues with this car. After all, it is a used car with 88k miles. There are some places on the front fascia that have some clear coat cracking. It is just cracking, no peeling. If your familiar with these cars then you know this was a common issue. It is noticeable up close, but from any distance further it is hard to detect. The hood also has a couple of small spots showing some age. These cars used a composite hood. The only other thing is the factory breather cover is missing the clips that hold it on. This is due to the age of the plastic. A replacement is available but it does not have the Z28 SS logo. The only other thing that should be mentioned is that the upper dash panel right by the windshield is cracked. Again, if you know these cars then you know this was a common problem also. Other then that everything else is perfect. The interior is near mint. The seats have virtually no wear, which is rare for leather of this vintage. Everything functions just as it did when it left the factory, even the factory Bose CD sound system. The Camaro drives just as it should. Everything is very tight. Of course with the nearly new z-rated BFGoodrich g-force TA's you can feel the road. The car sticks to the road and handles amazing. The motor sounds great with the SLP performance exhaust and the power is just as intended from Chevrolet. Overall I would say that you would be hard pressed to find a better surviving SS Camaro. The paint is completely original with just the right amount of patina to let you know. It is a completely dent free body. There are no major scratches either. The car has not been modified at all. The car is a very nice example of what I believe to be a significant car for Chevrolet.
