This 1961 has the old-school look and with a few small tweaks, became the kind of car that is featured in magazines like "Hot VW." Very nicely finished, this Beetle is an affordable way to own a car that gets more than its fair share of second glances. The metallic purple paint has a lot of pearl in it, so it varies depending on the light. In our studio, it actually looks quite subdued and even period-appropriate, but get it out in the sun and it glows from within with a lovely violet shiny that lets everyone know this isn't a garden-variety Beetle. Fit and finish are excellent particularly for a car at this price point, and while nothing was altered during the restoration, the look of the early cars have a subtly customized look relative to the later Beetles most of us are used to seeing. The headlights look larger and lower in the fenders, the parking and taillights are smaller, and the simple single-bar bumpers are almost too cool to be stock. But all of it is just how it was built more than fifty years ago. OF course, a few custom mods like the chrome running boards and modern side mirrors give it the kind of look that landed it in a magazine spread, and the overall level of finish would be just as impressive on a car costing three times as much. This playful Bug looks awesome inside, too, with brilliant white upholstery and all of the simple charm intact. Dig the low-back seats which are originals, and their exposed tube frames have been painted white to match the seat covers. New reproduction door panels with built-in map pockets are nicely finished and black carpets keep it from being blindingly bright inside. The instrument panel was painted to match the body and it actually works quite well inside with the black and white trim. Original instrumentation includes a round speedo and a separate fuel gauge, and the original oversized wheel was replaced with a thick Grant GT helm that looks great. There's also a modern AM/FM/CD stereo to replace what was undoubtedly an AM unit, but aside from those minor changes, it remains pretty stock inside. The front luggage compartment is trimmed to match, including a white vinyl spare tire cover with the VW emblem stitched into its face. The 1600 cc air-cooled flat-four remains one of the most reliable machines ever devised by man. Its distinctive sound and peppy attitude make it a favorite, and in this lightweight early Bug, performance is energetic. You know the show-quality looks continue to the engine bay, where a lot of body-colored pieces, polished aluminum, and fresh componentry makes for a show-worthy engine bay. There's nothing terribly radical going on, but VW experts will see a few common and sensible mods to enhance the experience. It still drives through the original 4-speed manual transmission, whose shift action is best mastered over time. It's extremely clean underneath, not quite as detailed as the rest of the car, but that also means you won't be afraid to drive it. There might be a slight lowering job here, it's hard to say, and the polished VW-style Torque Thrust wheels are a great addition and wear staggered 195/65/15 front and 215/60/15 rear Kelly radials. Bugs are still a lot of fun for not a lot of cash, and there's just no possible way you could duplicate this car for the asking price. This 2005 Saleen Mustang shows you just how much polish the Saleen engineers were able to add to the Mustang, creating something that's definitely worth the substantial premium they were charging. Bright red works on any Mustang, but after you spot this one on the horizon roaring towards you, a number of details start to jump out. First, it looks a heck of a lot sleeker than any garden-variety Mustang you've seen. Part of the credit goes to the monochromatic red paint, which is as deep and shiny as anything you'd find on high-end exotics. But the Saleen details, including the body kit, make the Mustang look like something else without removing its basic familiarity. The use of a base-model hood certainly helps with the super smooth image, and the blacked-out grille with special marker lights on either side makes a different head-on view. Deep side skirts work with the chin spoiler to visually lower the car and the Saleen guys add their own completely custom rear fascia that slips on in place of the original. And there's also a new deck lid that extends the "tunnel" effect in back, framing the revised taillights. Now why is all this important? Because this is NOT a Mustang, it's a Saleen, and as such, it has been treated as an object of some value rather than just a fast toy. The interior got a pretty throughout makeover as well, starting with deeply bolstered leather seats with Saleen logos on their backs. Racy headrests, a few billet aluminum dress-up pieces, and Saleen emblems in place of the Ford ovals remind you that you're in a special machine. There wasn't much need to reinvent the wheel with the gauges, which are bright and clear with slightly revised faces ("Premium fuel only" certainly promises some fun), and the factory HVAC controls are simple and effective. A Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo replaces the original factory entertainment system and sounds spectacular and the 5-speed manual transmission gets a knob hewn from billet aluminum. It's all in very good condition with an inviting, lived-in look that's perfect for a performance car of distinction like this. And the trunk looks virtually untouched since 2005, another sure sign that this car has led an easy life. The '281' part of S281 stands for the 4.6 liter V8 under the hood. Saleen didn't add a lot of horsepower improvements to it, deciding that the factory's 260 horsepower was plenty. Instead, they focused on sharpening up the handling, including a Racecraft strut tower brace that arches over the engine bay like a bridge. A mild engine recalibration and a high-flow air filter add some horsepower and the custom Saleen exhaust system with center outlets was part of the appearance package that was functional as well as attractive. Upgraded springs and shocks, custom brake pad materials, and a few other tweaks make this the most razor-sharp Mustang you'll ever drive, particularly with those giant 20-inch chrome alloys and their low-profile Michelin rubber. Saleens are extremely well-documented, and as a result they're also eminently collectable, so #05-126 here is a fantastic example that's affordable and fun. Just don't let anyone call it a Ford. The white leather interior is nothing like what you'd expect but makes a dramatic statement in this rod. Custom bucket seats with matching blue piping are all-day comfortable and cool enough to be show-worthy all by themselves. The door panels mirror the flames on the exterior of the body and the dark blue carpets anchor the interior so it looks right. A simple instrument panel was standard in 1932 and today uses white-faced instruments to achieve a similar no-nonsense look. There's also a full-width back seat that's upholstered to match the front buckets, and with an AM/FM/CD stereo system, it's a great place to spend some quality time. There is no trunk, but it includes a custom-built trailer that is a miniature version of the car, complete with remote door poppers for access, and hitching them together makes for the most arresting and attention-grabbing hot rod we've ever seen. Let's address first things first: this 'Vette has 88,393 miles on the clock but you'd never guess it from the appearance. It's also been maintained by a Corvette fanatic (aren't they all) and has never done double duty as a daily driver. And having spent A LOT of time working on these myself, I can say with confidence that even at this mileage, I doubt you'll have any problems with this 'Vette. We raced them, used them hard, and did everything we could to break them, and failed almost every time. You can buy this one with confidence. The paint remains in great shape, and the elegant Pewter metallic finish is one of the better colors on the C5 shape, giving it a sophisticated, understated look that fits with its grand touring mission. There are a few signs of use, of course, but the impression here is of a car that has been loved all its life and someone spent a lot of Saturday afternoons washing and waxing the bodywork. At a glance, nobody will guess the mileage or the price. In fact, what will likely get everyone talking is the trick projector-style headlight conversion which gives it a unique look very similar to the C5R racers that competed at Le Mans. The gray leather interior is loaded up with just about every option on the Corvette wish list, including power bucket seats, A/C, cruise control, power windows, locks, and mirrors, traction and stability control, and a great-sounding Bose AM/FM/CD stereo. Have a look at the driver's seat and you'll see a few signs of wear and age, particularly on the outer bolster which sees the most traffic, but it's certainly in line with the car's affordable price tag. The black convertible top probably spent a lot of its life neatly stowed under the hard shell tonneau, and as a result shows minimal wear and soiling and is ready for another decade of fun. Even the trunk looks great with all three of the special compartment lids still in place, as well as the cargo net. Chevy's LS1 needs no real introduction and after nearly two decades in production (has it really been that long?!?) you know it's one heck of a powerplant. This one appears largely stock throughout, from the plastic coil covers to the air filter assembly up front, which is refreshing given how modification-friendly these cars have become. It's nicely maintained and runs beautifully, as you'd expect. Underneath, there's a 4-speed automatic transmission and the stock exhaust system with polished tips. The balsa wood floors, hydro-formed frame rails, and aluminum suspension components don't look like they've spent much time in foul weather, and with 13-inch rotors, braking performance is still impressive. Stock alloy wheels are curb-rash-free and wear appropriately-sized performance radials. Forget concerns about mileage and remember that the C5 is still one of the fastest 2-seaters on the road. Give the guys who did the paint job a whole lot of credit, because not only did they create a show-quality paint job, they did it in black AND they did it with single-stage urethane. The honest shine looks far more like the original enamel than the two-stage stuff and you already know how hard it is to build a shiny black car that looks this good. Details like a cowl-induction hood and deck lid spoiler are expected on a car like this, but it also carries RS trim that includes the folding headlights and enables the use of trick LED taillights without losing your back-up lamps. The white stripes are just a little different than the usual SS pattern that most guys use on their cars, and you'll note that it wraps neatly around the nose and trunk lid for a custom look. Nice chrome bumpers, gill inserts, and wheel lip moldings add a bit of flash on an already very visible car, and all of it works well to create a car that gets more impressive the longer you look at it. The black and white houndstooth interior puts a bit of a spin on a classic look and the white upholstery makes for a brilliant contrast against the black paint. They didn't go crazy with modifications, instead sticking to what is already a pretty nice setup, including a factory console with accessory gauges. The woodgraining on the dash and console matches the aftermarket steering wheel, so it has an upscale look and reproduction door panels look right and are so white you'll need sunglasses. The factory speedo and tach are in good condition with crisp markings and bright needles and the AM/FM stereo radio looks pretty stock but powers big 6x9 speakers on the rear package shelf. The immaculately prepped trunk offers a reproduction mat without so much as a wrinkle, as well as a space-saver spare and a jack assembly that was chrome plated just for some extra sparkle. Nice! Look past all the chrome and polished aluminum under the hood and you'll find a 327 cubic inch V8 that is this car's original, numbers-matching powerplant. Of course, it's dressed for show instead of for combat, but that's perfectly OK when you see the results. The cowl-induction air cleaner is fully functional, and everything from the deck surfaces on up has been chromed or painted Chevy Orange to really sparkle against the black inner fenders. Everything you can see or touch is new and when you pop the hood, there will be no question who should be taking home the big trophy. Underneath, it's the same deal, with a highly detailed chassis that shows almost no signs of use. The 4-speed manual is probably entertaining on the road, but the car's so nice you may never find out, and it does have a great sound thanks to a set of long-tube headers and a trick stainless muffler. White floors highlight the detailing for a very cool twist, and there's a disc brake behind each of those 18-inch Foose alloy wheels.
