This is one of 678 BMW Z3 M Coupes produced with an S54 engine, one of 340 built in 2002, and one of only 24 S54 M Coupes in Steel Gray with a Dark Gray/Black interior and a sunroof. It is a rare car with a clean CARFAX, complete ownership history, extensive service logs and very few tasteful modifications.This car is absolutely stunning! This has been my dream car since I first saw one at a dealership in the Netherlands during a European vacation. Each time I planned to purchase a new car, I started looking for M coupes, but I never was able to find the right one (crashed/salvage title, overly modified, too expensive, etc.). Once I found this car posted on Bimmerforms, I rushed off to Chicago to see it in person and ultimately purchased the car only a few days after it was listed. I’ve been very lucky to have owned and enjoyed this phenomenal car! I’m selling the car as my family continues to grow and I plan to purchase another vehicle that we can all enjoy together. This Coupe currently has 39,150 miles, has always been garaged and has almost spent its entire life in Southern California (with the exception of ~7 months in Chicago). It is completely stock with the exception of a Dinan ECU Tune (originally done at Avus Autosport in Glendale, CA and later reflashed/updated by Bullet Performance in Costa Mesa, CA), a Strong Strut strut tower brace (installed by Bill Jacobs BMW in Naperville, IL), a weighted ZHP gear shift knob and center console from Leather Z, drilled rotors and magnetic OEM BMW stone guards (in front of rear wheels). Mechanically, this car is perfect. It just went through a major service at The M Shop in Los Angeles where it had Service 2, a new OEM clutch, all new fluids (brake/coolant/diff flushes), new filters (air, fuel & oil), new belts, new high pressure power steering line, new door lock tumbler (passenger door was spinning), new door handle trim, new driver-side window motor and repaired regulator mount (the windows operate flawlessly), new seat rail bushings (prevents the “rocking seat” issue), fixed some cosmetic imperfections and had some other misc jobs done (full documentation available upon request). The car has a recent set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (less than 500 miles on them), a new battery and a new set of windshield wipers. It’s turnkey and ready for the next owner to enjoy!The car has never had any paintwork aside from the removal of a barely visible door ding in the driver door (via Paintless Dent Removal), the results are flawless. The car also does not have any accident history. The only flaws in the paintwork are some very minor (nearly invisible even when close) stone chips on the front end, a tiny scratch on the driver mirror and a few marks under the “fangs” on the front bumper. The wheels are virtually perfect with the exception of one small pock mark on the front left/driver wheel. I’ve attempted to capture everything in the photographs, so please review them closely!The interior is in terrific shape as well, the bolsters don’t show any wear and the floor/trunk mats and carpet are in excellent shape. The car has never been smoked in and there are zero unusual odors. The rearview mirror was proactively sent back to Sybesma’s Electonics in 2013 for refurbishment prior to experiencing any issues associated with the bubbling fluid problems that have damaged many Z3 dashboards (this one is perfect). This is also the actual car that was featured in the May 2007 issue of Bimmer magazine, where Alexander Palevsky compares the original M Coupe to its Z4 successor. It’s a great read and certainly a highlight in the cars history (I’ll include a copy of the article with the sale)!Included with the sale is the owernship history and current CARFAX report, a service records/history folder, a copy of the Bimmer magazine article, a USB thumb drive containing documents and images from when I purchased the car, amber BMW corner markers, original BMW center console, BMW battery tender (plugs into cigarette lighter socket), two keys (one with working push-button light, one inside BMW leather pouch), glovebox owners manual/documentation (with additional plastic key), radio security code, new Bentley Z3 service manual, a Dorkfest t-shirt from 2012 (XL, never worn), front license plate bracket & frame, and a clean CA Certificate of Title in my name.In terms of ownership history, I am the fifth owner of the car. It was originally leased in Los Angeles, CA and subsequently purchased by the original lessee. It was then purchased by a gentleman in Glendale, CA in 2005 when the car had about 19k miles. Only a few months after purchasing the car, he then sold it to another gentleman in San Clemente, CA that kept it until 2010 when it had approximately 30k miles. The car then made a short (~7 month) trip to Naperville, IL where the previous owner drove it about 2k miles before selling it to me on October 3rd, 2010 with 32,482 miles on the clock. It was promptly shipped back to me in Glendale, CA via Intercity Lines where it has lived for the last 6+ years. I have been in touch with all the previous owners and will happily provide their names & contact information to the new owner.While I owned the car, I made a few changes to bring it closer to its original configuration (aside from routine service). The previous owner added a Strong Strut butt brace at the same time the strut tower brace was added. I had the butt brace removed as it made me nervous to have the bar relatively close to the ground and protrude so far beyond the bottom of the vehicle (note, it never touched the ground as we inspected it when it was removed). At 26k miles, a previous owner exchanged the 3.15 ratio differential for a 3.46, I retuned it to stock. The car had a clear bra on it that was quite thick and slightly discolored, so I removed it just prior to taking the listing photos (I saved it to prove that it came off without any paint damage). It's 50K mile journey started around the set of "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" where the car, in addition to being rigged for camera work, often served as a prop that began Ozzie's scenes. When the Nelsons moved on to newer metal, the wagon sold to Don Bruker's Cars of the Stars museum. And, when the Car's to the Stars museum went out of business, it found residence with California collector Ray Ostrander. Since the Chieftain had been in museum mode for quite some time, Ostrander decided to conduct a minor restoration that included freshened chrome, some new upholstery and a wholesale swap of original Glendale Green and Nimbus Gray pigment for a pleasing combination of pearlescent Glendale and bright white. And, after that winner's time ran out, Don's dreams turned to good fortune, as WGBH DJ Chris O'Brien announced his name as the second winner. After a prompt call to the radio station, Don spent the next several years enjoying his unrestored, mostly original classic at summer cruise-ins and weekend car shows. And, in 2014, the car claimed First Place in the '49-'57 Restored Cars class and the Dallas Autorama in Dallas, Texas. ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN Raise this Chieftain's domed hood and the first thing you'll notice is an original Strato Streak 316 that, according to the car's previous owners, has never been removed or rebuilt. Less obvious, of course, is that stalwart engine's correct 521560 casting number. Tested for over 1 million miles, and found throughout the 1956 Pontiac line-up, this mean, green mill was Pontiac Motor Division's creative answer to Chevrolet's red-hot 265. Behind that block, an original 4-speed Hydramatic transmission, which wears a correct "D56" prefix stamp, transfers power to a factory-spec rear end. In front of that drivetrain, correct control arms employ optional power steering and fresh shocks. Optional power drum brakes are a welcome addition and big performance upgrade. There's a traditional, true-dual exhaust system that appears to have been patched with new turbo mufflers. And everything rides on painted steel wheels, which spin fresh 225/75R15 Coker Classic whitewalls around full stainless hubcaps. INTERIOR Climb inside this awesome Poncho and you'll find a mostly original interior that features dramatic style and enough great looking trim to payroll a small upholstery shop. Covered in vivid hides, the car's big bench seats, equipped with optional power adjustment up front, feature a nice combination of fresh front and original rear vinyl. At the sides of those seats, original door panels look great hovering behind small armrests and correct chrome handles. At the front of those panels, an original dash hangs original telemetry above optional air conditioning. In front of the driver, an original, ornate steering wheel spins around an optional, foot-operated windshield washing system. And behind the passengers, a matted cargo area frames ample storage space in original stainless skid strips. The entire U.S. model year lineup all had the famous mechanical fuel injection and the one-year-only side oil door. It was also the first year displacement bumped to 2.4 liters. As the market continues to grow for “long-hood” 911s, the 1972 model is quickly becoming one of the most desirable. This 911 has a production date of February 1972. It was delivered new from Rusnak Porsche of Pasadena, CA on April 28th, 1972. The first owners were Marion and Charles Weber who lived in Los Angeles area and were the founders of locally famous MG Mitten automotive accessory store. This shop specialized in car covers and was in business from the mid 50’s to the late 80’s. Charles purchased this car for his wife, Marion, who was the face of the company and featured in all their product advertisements. As you can imagine, being in the car care business, they took incredible care of the car. In fact, it is reported that they never washed the car. It was always carefully wiped down with their detailing products. The car was almost always serviced at the local Porsche dealer and we have all the corresponding stamps in the books. In January 1976, the Weber’s sold the car to John and Janet Wells of Glendale, California with around 19,000 miles. John Wells was the founder and owner of the John Wells Golf Shop in the local area. Also, he was related to the Wells family of Wells Fargo. John was an enthusiastic car collector and continued the tradition of excellent care for this 911. It was always garaged with a cover; never driven in the rain; and, never washed with water…just lightly detailed. John kept great records of his service and we have all of his receipts. He primarily used a shop called Tommy’s “Verkstad” in La Crescenta, CA. They were a well-known and very reputable Los Angeles area independent Porsche facility. Some highlights of his services included: Rebuilt transmission, replace clutch/flywheel (34,000 miles) Replace oil return tubes and valve covers (37,000 miles) New master cylinder/rebuild brake calipers (38,000 miles) John Wells sold the car to the current owners in April of 1996 with 38,000 miles. This owner was an employee of his who had worked for him for 36-years. Wells never sold any of his cars but he saw how much his employee liked the car and that her husband was an antique car collector. So, he figured that the car would be in good hands. This couple live locally in Los Angeles County. They have owned the car for just over 18-years. Although they only drove it for another 4,000-miles, they took great care of the car and regularly serviced it themselves. Just before bringing the car to us, they took the car to TLG auto in North Hollywood for a full service and inspection. They spent over $3,000 on the following items: New fuel lines Remove and replace injection bump belt and pump drive seal Remove and replace valve cover gaskets New hood and deck lid shocks New fan belt New spark belts New turn signal switch Compression test: 1) 145 2) 145 3) 145 4) 145 5) 145 6) 150 The condition of the car is excellent. The car was repainted sometime in the early 80’s in its original silver color. The original paint started having the typical discoloration of the clear coat. The doorjambs, hood, trunk, etc. are still wearing the original paint (see pics). The glass is all-original including the windscreen (see pics for factory stampings). The chrome, rubber, deco trim, and rubber seals are all original as well and in excellent condition. There are some minor chips on the front of the car from normal driving (see pics). The Bridgestone tires were replaced about 7,000-miles ago and have plenty of tread left. However, that was in 1983. The condition of the tires is remarkable with no cracks…a testament to the good-life this car has lived. The interior is equally as nice and in very original/unrestored condition. The dash is pristine with no cracks. The door pockets are also in terrific condition. The dealer added the door speakers behind the front pockets. The seats are in original unrestored condition and look fantastic with no rips or tears. The original carpet (including trunk) shows very little signs of wear. The targa top headliner was replaced but the vinyl on the topside is original and the top has never been folded. All the gauges appear to work properly except for the clock. The underside is very dry and original with no signs of rust or repairs. TLG fixed the oil leaks and the engine appears to be dry as well. The engine looks to have never been opened. An early 911 is only original once and they way it drives proves it. It is very tight and responsive. The car shifts easily with no synchro issues. The power is strong and smooth. It is a joy to drive and would be wonderful as a summer touring Porsche. California registration paid through February 2015 This Porsche comes complete with the original tool kit, original spare wheel and tire, original jack, original factory floor mats, original wood trunk board, original books/manuals, original ownership/maintenance record book from Porsche, all records/dealer stamps from new, original valve covers, extra bulb for original Cibie headlights, original Porsche car bra from MG Mitten, and many original keys.
