The GMC Yukon has a fresh and comfortable interior. Building on a recent redesign it carries over for 2009 with a sleek body mounted on a strong, stiff frame with power steering, disc brakes, and a touring suspension. Available in 2WD or 4WD and in three trims, the Yukon seats up to nine passengers and is rated to tow up to 8200 pounds when properly equipped. The SLE and SLT trims have a choice of three V8 engines, one of which is E85 fuel compatible. A 295-hp 4.8-liter V8 is standard on rear-wheel drive models matched with a four-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed auto is standard with all other engines. A 320-hp 5.3-liter V8 is standard on four-wheel drive, available on two-wheel drive. A 403-hp 6.2-liter V8 is exclusive to the Denali trim. GMC answered the call for better fuel economy with the 2008 Yukon Hybrid and XFE models. These deliver among the best in class city and highway EPA ratings respectively. The entire GMC Yukon lineup was completely redesigned for 2007 and added the Hybrid and XFE in 2008, with 2009 seeing more extensive applications of the six-speed automatic transmission, and integrated trailer brake controller, and minor packaging, cosmetic and electronic updates. The Yukon shares the same basic platform used for Chevy Avalanche, Suburban and Silverado 1500, and Tahoe. Yukon offers power, space, and towing capacity. It can haul large loads of gear, it can survive repeated pounding over rugged terrain, it can pull trailers, all while transporting four in luxurious comfort. Inside, the Yukon features a simple, elegant dash that hints at aspirations for entry-luxury status. The Yukon has three-row seating standard and can be configured for two to nine occupants. Seating in the first and second rows has plenty of room, but the third row is best left for kids and has to be removed for maximum cargo space. Engine choices are all V8s. The popular 5.3-liter V8 engines (310-320 hp) provide plenty of power and have a system that shuts down half the cylinders under light loads to improve fuel economy. The Denali model's 6.2-liter V8 generates 403 horsepower, making it one of the more powerful offerings in the class. The Hybrid powertrain features a 6.0-liter V8 boosted by two electric motors for truck performance and respectable fuel economy. Maximum tow capacity ranges from 8500 pounds (Denali 2WD) to 6000 (Hybrid Yukon 4WD); subtract roughly 1500 pounds for passengers and cargo. Ride and handling characteristics are typical of large SUVs. The Yukon leans in turns and is not agile. The ride quality, on the other hand, is commendable, even with the Denali's available 20-inch polished wheels that add a touch of high fashion trendiness. 4WD models use Autotrac, a system that can be engaged on dry pavement and also includes low-range gearing. It comes in handy for rugged terrain, launch ramps, and winter weather but does not repeal the laws of physics as some owners believe. For those who need a real four-wheel drive with cargo space and towing capacity the Yukon is a competitive choice. Those who don't tow might be better served by a larger crossover like the GMC Acadia. In addition to the Tahoe, the Yukon is in the same class as the Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Durango, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia. Those in need of mileage should put the Hybrid on their shopping list alongside the Aspen/Durango Hybrid, Lexus RX hybrid, and the diesel versions of the BMW X5, Jeep Grand Cherokee, VW Touareg and Mercedes ML and GL that provide hybrid-like city economy and superior highway economy. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The GMC Yukon and Yukon Denali feature clean lines with quiet, calm surface planes that minimize the sheer bulk. Likewise, the smooth, gently contoured flanks and arrow-straight beltline visually lower the height. Tight tolerances between body panels and a thud closing a door invites comparison with the highest quality imports. The one-piece front end presents a friendly, welcoming face but without forfeiting the Yukon's presence. Large headlight housings are vertically oriented rather than the Tahoe's horizontal layout. The trademark grille with ruby-red logo and lower air intake ensure plenty of engine cooling. Door handles bridging deep recesses make for easy gripping in all seasons. Squared-off wheelwells carry forward a Yukon signature styling cue. They suggest trimming up with the available 20-inch wheels and tires, though that's not our choice from a driving and towing perspective. At the rear, a broad, mostly flat, almost vertical tailgate resides between tall, narrow taillights. The independently hinged rear window is a nice touch, permitting easy loading of grocery bags and such. The Yukon Hybrid has several styling cues that distinguish it from the other models. To counter added weight (the Hybrid is roughly 250 pounds heavier than standard) and drag, the front end features an aluminum hood and bumper beam, and a more prominent air dam you might scrape on steep driveways, never mind off-road travel. The upper grille is expanded while the lower is smaller and openings that would house fog lights and tow hooks are blocked off. Along the sides, the running boards are reshaped for improved aerodynamics and the wheel flares are slightly reshaped. At the back, the rear pillars, spoiler and center high-mounted stoplight have a unique shape, the tailgate is made of aluminum and has fixed glass, and LED taillights replace the standard bulbs. The wheels are more aero efficient and the tires have a lower rolling resistance. The spare tire and jack have been replaced by a tire inflation kit. The result is a slightly better coefficient of drag to help improve fuel economy, if only by small amounts. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression When it comes to trucks, numbers matter, arguably more than they do with cars. The most popular engine for the GMC Yukon is the 5.3-liter V8, which produces 320 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque. A Yukon 4WD is listed at 5536 pounds, which doesn't include options. But the most important number on the 2009 Yukon is six, as in six-speed automatic transmission. In recent years the Expedition's minor torque advantage and six-speed automatic (versus the Yukon's four-speed) was enough to accelerate the heavier Expedition better and get better real-world mileage. The even-more powerful Armada and Sequoia drove away from both of them. Now the Yukon's 5.3 and slightly lower weight have made it competitive again, and this is the primary reason upgrading a base model 2WD to a 5.3 and six-speed is worth the $1000. For the most power you need a Denali and its 6.2-liter V8: 403 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque. This powerhouse gets the Denali moving with ease, delivering very similar power-to-weight as the Sequoia. The Denali's 8500-pound tow rating is the highest of any standard-length Yukon, but it is not available with a 4WD system that has low-range gearing. Like Chrysler/Dodge's hemi the 5.3 has a system to shut off half its cylinders when not needed, a condition that exists under power very infrequently in big trucks. A Yukon 1500 5.3 rates EPA 14/20/16 (city/highway/combined) in 2 or 4WD, and the Expedition 2WD is also 14/20/16 (4WD not tested at time of post). A Denali 6.2 rates 12/19/14 and the competitive Sequoia 5.7 (381 hp, 401 lb-ft) rates 13/18/15 and the Armada runs 12/18/14. Recent EPA ratings are less optimistic than they used to be, but any way (or truck) you look at it, you're going to use lots of gas. The Hybrid Yukon offers big gains in city fuel economy, netting EPA numbers of 20./20 in 4WD. Chrysler's Aspen HEV hybrid that uses the same type of hybrid system and offers higher system output, rates 20/22. Real-world drives show EPA numbers for hybrids remain on the optimistic side. In back-to-back drives between hybrid and standard GM SUV's we found the standard (lighter) truck just edged the hybrid on highway fuel economy while the hybrid was better in urban environs, getting around 17 mpg versus the 5.3 around 13 mpg. EPA diesel numbers on the other hand tend to be pessimistic, and Mercedes' GL320 rates 17/23, VW's Touareg 18/25; the upcoming Audi Q7 and BMW X5 diesel EPA values weren't yet available. The numbers game continues with tow ratings. Yukon ratings aren't quite as high as Expedition and Armada, and 1500 pounds below the Sequoia's top 10,000-pound rating. To find real towing ability you need to know the trucks' GCWR and subtract the truck (and all passengers/cargo) from it. For example, a Yukon rated to tow 8200 pounds max might pull only 6700 pounds with the truck loaded; VW's Touareg diesel is rated at 7716 pounds, but that is with the vehicle fully loaded. Driving a Yukon is pleasant. Power comes on smoothly, with no surges or hiccups, and it is accompanied by a pleasant tone that reminds us of classic dual exhaust. Transitions effected by the fuel-management system are invisible, with the only indication a telltale in the information display in the tachometer. The six-speed automatic sorts out gears well. It has a manual shift function managed by a rocker switch in the handgrip on the column shift lever that rev-matches downshifts, but unlike most competitors you must first move the lever to M. The Hybrid works seamlessly and doesn't require any new driver action, just some familiarity with the different noise and, for maximum efficiency, driving style. At very low speeds propulsion is by electric power only, and you have to watch for people walking out in front of you in parking lots since there is only tire noise and some whirring when you start or stop. The system will do 30 mph on electric alone in ideal circumstances but in most cases the gas engine is on by 10 mph. It usually shuts off the gas engine when the vehicle is stationary and the majority of time your foot is on the gas pedal it is a combination of the gas engine and electric motors powering you. If you step on the gas hard as you might to get across a busy street there is a moment, some fraction of a second, before the gas engine starts and the system delivers its full 367 lb-ft of torque, so you should try that in the open a couple of times to know exactly how the truck will respond. There's enough power to get the Hybrid (and a 4000-6000 pound trailer) going easily, though it may sound odd at first as the gas engine goes to a certain rpm and stays there while the truck catches up with it. The brakes in a Hybrid will feel touchy at first because they signal regeneration, which adds more retarding without any change in brake pedal pressure. Driving Yukon models along twisty, two-lane roads on both coasts we found they tracked well through sweeping bends traversed well above the marked 40-mph advisories. Like all large truck-based SUVs, steering is still somewhat slow, but it is precise and offers good feedback and a decent turning circle by truck standards. The handling is also sharper than in the previous generation, due to a stronger and stiffer frame; coil-over-shock independent front suspension; revised, multi-link, live axle rear suspension; and a wider track, by some three inches in front and an inch in the rear. Still, the Yukon is a full-size truck and is prone to body lean in turns and slow reactions in quick changes of direction. We found the ride to be comfortable and controlled on South Carolina freeways, some of which were glass-smooth while others were buckled from severe winters. With the Denali's available 20-inch wheels, the suspension didn't jolt but you can tell those are heavy truck parts underneath, even on Chicago's notoriously pockmarked streets. The turning circle impressed us. It takes less space to make a U-turn in a Yukon than it does in other SUVs in this class; even some relatively small vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Eclipse need more space to turn around than the Yukon. This is helpful in a world of big SUVs and compact parking spaces. The brake pedal was solid and firm, with a prompt and confident response. Abundant sound deadening material mutes road noise; you'll hear some from the rear tires only if the stereo is off. That the stereo has to be on for the navigation system to operate is irritating, a strategy shared with expensive Mercedes vehicles. We like that GM vehicles now provide off switches for the daytime running lights and for the inside rearview mirror's auto-dim function. Added for 2009 is an available brake controller for trailers with electric brakes (it obviously won't work with surge brakes and may not be compatible with electro-hydraulic disc systems). This integrates the brakes on both vehicles for the smoothest, most effective action. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Yukon interior design is clean and uncluttered. Elegantly simple, the instrument panel and center stack would look right at home in a luxury SUV. The Denali is richer still, with a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and darker wood trim than the other models. We think the Yukon dashboard is a friendlier, slicker and more integrated assemblage of gauges, display screens, touch pads and control panels than those in either a Land Rover or the Mercedes-Benz GL- and ML-Class, all priced higher than a comparable Yukon. The GMC's gauge cluster is very informative, reporting via secondary analog gauges powertrain data others leave to warning lights or bury in scrollable information displays. Leather surfaces feel expensive, if not luxurious. The fit between panels and coverings is impressive, with tight tolerances. Less impressive is the finish of some of the hard plastic surfaces, which look better than they feel; lighter-color interiors convey the lux look better than the dark colors. The headliner is a woven fabric that looks and feels like mouse fur. The Hybrid model has a unique gauge cluster with a special tachometer and an economy gauge. The economy gauge can be used for more efficient driving (as can be the mpg data on most models' info display in the tachometer). Note that economy is best with the gauge pointed in the left-to-straight-up range that translates on other gauges to cold engine, low oil pressure, and low fuel level. The tachometer has an Auto Stop reading to indicate when the gasoline engine is shut off. No Yukon tachometer has redline because the scale ends at the engine's maximum speed. The Hybrid comes standard with a navigation system and a 6.5-inch screen that shows a graphic representation of the hybrid system's power flow. This screen shows if the power is coming from the electric motors, the gasoline engine, or both, plus when regenerative braking is charging the batteries. The system also shows if the vehicle is in two- or four-wheel-drive mode. It's fun to monitor these readouts; they help you learn about how the hybrid system works and show when it is being used for the best fuel economy. But care must be taken by the driver to not be distracted by them. The design of the Yukon's dash gives the driver an expansive view out the windshield, adding to the feeling of being above it all. Visibility is good all around, though the imposing right side C-pillar (the post between the rear side door and the rear quarter panel) does nothing to reduce the large side mirrors' blind spot. Along the same lines, the third-row seat blocks the lower third of the rear window; folding the third row down eliminates this. The front seats are refreshingly comfortable and easy to adjust; most models have electric seat cushion adjustment but manual recline adjustment. They offer good thigh support, which is sometimes lacking in GM vehicles. Adjustable pedals on some models take the place of a telescoping steering column, and the tilt wheel is angled slightly toward the centerline of the car. The available second-row captain's chairs offer good thigh support, as well. We're disappointed with the folding armrests, however; they have one setting, which won't fit every occupant. Some way to adjust the angle of these armrests would be welcome. The Hybrid model has thinner front seats that reduce weight and open up more than an inch in second-row knee room. We found them to be just as comfortable as the standard seats. Room for people is respectable and competitive with other full-size SUVs. In front room measurements, the GMC Yukon equals of betters the Ford Expedition, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia but all have plenty of space. Trying them on will show which ergonomic setup and volume suits you best. In the second row, the Yukon trails the Expedition and Armada in headroom and legroom and betters them in hiproom, but by less than an inch in all regards; it also slightly trails the Sequoia in second-row headroom, but has slightly more hiproom and considerably more legroom. In other words, all large SUVs have a lot of second-row space and the Yukon is no exception. As for second-row access, the Yukon suffers from small-feet syndrome, where the clearance between the base of the second row seat and the doorframe is so cramped, it's impossible to step in or out without turning your foot sideways. Since the third-row seats sit on the cargo floor third-row legroom is limited in the Yukon, with little space for adult feet and knees up at chest level. The Expedition, Sequoia, and Armada offer considerably more legroom for third-row passengers; the Expedition has more than a foot more third-row legroom and is very close in all other respects. On the upside, it's surprisingly easy to climb in and out of the Yukon's rearmost seat, the walk-through opening notably larger than entering the second row. The second-row seat folds up out of the way with the release of a lever on the outboard pivot, or even better, at the press of a button with the optional power-fold feature. Unfolding the seat is done manually, however. Make sure it's securely latched. Cargo space behind the third row is limited, with just 17 cubic feet, less than any of the three competitors. With the second- and third-row seats out of the way, the Yukon offers comparable cargo space for the class, squeaking by the Expedition, exceeding the Armada's space by more than 10 cubic feet, but losing to the Sequoia by almost 12 cubic feet. Of course, the extended wheelbase Yukon XL (and Expedition XL/Navigator L) make up for any of the space deficiencies versus the Armada and Sequoia. One area where the Yukon really falls down is the ease with which cargo room can be optimized. Both the Sequoia and Expedition offer a power-folding third row that folds flat into the floor. For optimum cargo room in the Yukon, the third-row seats must be removed, and they are heavy and bulky and you need someplace to store them. Cubby storage includes a compact glove box; fixed map pockets with molded-in bottle holders on the front doors; and pouches on the backs of the front seatbacks. A large bin with removable double cup holder is provided between the front seats. In the Yukon Denali, this feature is separated into a storage bin and twin cup holders, both with hinged covers and surrounded in woodgrain. Ordering the front bench seat for three-across seating eliminates the center console, of course. It offers available power that meets or beats the competition, though it trails in towing capacity. The addition of the Hybrid model answers the urban fuel economy issue that has long plagued large SUVs. With all its strengths, the Yukon is a strong contender in its class. As with most world-class luxury sedans, the XJ is rear-wheel drive, but all-wheel drive is available. For 2014, Jaguar XJ gets a number of upgrades. Long-wheelbase models get new reclining airline-style rear seats complete with a fold-down tray in back of the front seat, a new rear center armrest, and a massage feature for both front and rear seats. Jaguar XJL long-wheelbase models also ride on a revised rear suspension aimed at delivering a more comfortable ride. 2014 Jaguar XJ models are available with a new rear-seat entertainment package that uses two 10-inch high-resolution screens mounted on the back of the front seat headrests and comes with wireless headphones. Rated at 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, the V6 gets an EPA fuel economy rating of 18/27 mpg City/Highway in XJ, 16/24 mpg in the two all-wheel-drive models. The XJL Portfolio is the only model that comes with a normally aspirated 5.0-liter V8. Smooth and powerful, it's a superb powerplant, rated at 385 horsepower and capable of thrusting the XJL to 60 mph in a very quick 5.4 seconds, according to Jaguar. It also delivers an EPA-rated 25 mpg Highway. It's the only engine that isn't supercharged. XJ Supercharged models are fitted with a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that makes 470 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque, and launch from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.9 seconds. Fuel economy is estimated at 15/23 mpg City/Highway for both wheelbase lengths. XJ Supersport and XJL Ultimate variants use a 510-hp supercharged V8 with 461 lb.-ft. of torque, and can catapult to 60 mph in a scant 4.7 seconds. Like the more powerful XKR, these models achieve an EPA-estimated 15/23 mpg City/Highway. All XJ models boast an exquisite cabin, with rich leather upholstery and a variety of luxury trims. In the past, Jaguar has fallen short of tech-savvy Audi and BMW when it comes to in-car connectivity. The good news is, Jaguar says 2014 XJ models will come with a new smartphone integration system, called InControl Apps, which promises seamless connectivity with iPhone and Android handsets. Competitors of the XJ include Audi A8, the BMW 7 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the latter all-new for 2014. The XJR has fewer rivals, but goes up against the Audi S8, less expensive and less powerful, and the BMW 760Li, which offers plenty of power with its twin-turbocharged V12 but is $20,000 more than the XKR's long wheelbase model. The British are often thought of as stiff, but putting this car next to a BMW 7 Series, a dowdy Lexus LS or a big Mercedes makes them look like blocks of cheese. Pull up to a fine hotel or restaurant, or anywhere, really, in a Jaguar XJ and you are arriving in style. Riding on two lengthy wheelbases of 119.4 inches for the XJ and 124.3 inches for the XJL, with overall lengths of 201.9 inches and 206.8 inches respectively, this large touring sedan out-spans its competitors, while out-styling them in the same swift gesture. It has a sleek shape, with muscular faux-coupe modeling that cunningly understates its size. From its bold grille back to its steeply raked windshield, the XJ forms a long, graceful curve slicing irresistibly through the air. The roof tapers gently rearward to a long fastback, enclosing the greenhouse and large luggage compartment. Blacked-out B-, C-, and D-pillars give the entire greenhouse a low, compact look. Visually, these elements reduce the overall size of the car. Combined with the XJ's nose-down, haunches-up lunging stance, at a distance it appears to be a much smaller sport coupe. On closer examination, it's a shock that this is a fully found grand-touring vessel of style, power and great speed. XJR models are set apart with a special front fascia with R-signature black-mesh grilles, wide chrome-edged air intakes, rocker-panel extensions, a rear lip spoiler, and 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels. This is a grand touring sedan carefully tailored to make no-nonsense rapid travel effortless, comfortable and pleasing to both driver and passengers. While many large cars make long drives dull, drowsy, and fatiguing, an XJ's alert and alive character keeps the driver fully engaged in the joy of driving. The supercharged V6 is a thoroughly qualified full-time, all-season engine that delivers splendid performance. We found throttle response linear and enthusiastic. All-wheel drive makes the 2014 Jaguar XJ AWD a compelling choice for winter driving in the Snow Belt. Our test drives in both dry conditions and Canadian ice and snow found Jaguar's all-wheel-drive arrangement fully a match for its German competitors. (All-wheel drive is only available with the V6.) Steering effort and live feel is finely calibrated to deliver an excellent combination of road information and firm controllability. The car's chassis dynamics are similarly alive, whether driving on snow with all-wheel drive or pressing hard in high summer. And despite considerable weight, the XJ's brakes are forceful, easily modulated for good control, and even under very hard use show no hint of brake fade. The XJs are big cars, and you can't fool Mother Nature; big cars feel big when you corner fast or brake hard. And when you pounce on the throttle, even with the quick supercharged 340-hp 3.0-liter V6 in our XJL Portfolio AWD, you feel the commotion as the car is pushed from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. The XJ is a harmonious balance of spirited performance, smooth operation, and an indefinable element of poise. XJ throttle response is linear and enthusiastic. The car's chassis dynamics are similarly alive, whether driving on snow with all-wheel drive or pressing hard in high summer. And despite considerable weight, the XJ's brakes are forceful, easily modulated for good control, and even under very hard use show no hint of brake fade. The XJ uses Jaguar Drive Control, a silver dial that pops up on the center console and serves as the gear shifter. You can set it in Drive and forget it, or you may choose to manually control the superb 8-speed ZF transmission with the paddle shifters. You may also select specialized driving modes that make dramatic difference in performance. Winter Mode, tailors power and traction, optimizing performance for snow and ice. And it's also good for cruising in dry weather to save on fuel. Dynamic Mode is the other end of the spectrum, raising the threshold for the electronic steering control and allowing more wheel slip for high-performance driving. Jaguar permits switching off stability control altogether, but be careful when doing so. We only switch these systems off on racing circuits when they start slowing the car down. The powerful and smooth normally aspirated 5.0-liter V8, found only in the XJL Portfolio, continues to be a superb powerplant, thrusting the XJL to 60 mph in a very quick 5.4 seconds. We prefer it to the V6. The XJL Supercharged features a supercharged 5.0-liter engine that produces 470 horsepower. When we opened the throttle, it was like feeling a great ocean liner suddenly rise up on plane. And in keeping with Jaguar's well-balanced philosophy, despite its mass, the car felt surprisingly athletic and controlled while doing so. The Supersport's 510 horsepower express these models from 0 to 60 in a scant 4.7 seconds, while still delivering an impressive EPA-estimated 23 mpg Highway. In addition to a blazingly fast 550-hp supercharged V8, XJR models are fitted with performance-tuned springs and variable dampers for better body control, as well as big ventilated disc brakes. Jaguar claims the XJR will leap from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, making it a true leaper, indeed. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Jaguar XJ cabins are richly supplied with fragrant leather and handsome inlaid wood trim, and have a distinctly boardroom feel. A 12.3-inch high-definition screen in front of the driver projects a virtual analog speedometer, tachometer and related data in three dial faces. When fuel is low or the car needs to communicate other important information, a bulletin is communicated in the space occupied by the temporarily dimmed tachometer. The font for these central dials, while small, is businesslike and properly legible. Traditional Jaguar aero-like blower ducts above the center stack flank a handsome analog clock. Beneath these, an 8-inch touchscreen display provides access to navigation, climate control and audio features. There are two USB ports, as well as an auxiliary audio jack, for phones and music players. In the past, Jaguar was resistant to loading its models with the latest in-car technology. For 2014, that will change. Jaguar says all of its models will soon come with a smartphone integration system, dubbed InControl Apps, which promises seamless connectivity with iPhone and Android handsets. But as of now, Jaguar has yet to release further details, nor have we seen an example of InControl apps in any of its cars. The standard audio system on lower trim models is a 380-watt Meridian setup; an upgraded 825-watt system includes a feature called Conversation Assist. It uses microphones in the headliner to pick up occupants' voices and pipes them through the speakers, making it easier for people to hear one another in the cabin. As has long been the case with Jaguar sedans, the seating and visibility of the XJ are excellent. The front seats have vast adjustability, and their firmness and side-bolster fit are a model of one-size-fits-nearly-all common sense. Though the beltline of the XJ is relatively high around its occupants, thanks, in part, to generously sized side-view mirrors, outward visibility from the driving position never feels restricted. Long drives in an XJ are an experience to be anticipated with pleasure. XKR models have sport-style seats which hug even better around corners. Rear-seat dwellers ride in the lap of luxury with 38.9 inches of rear legroom in the standard-wheelbase car, and a vast 44.1 inches in the XJL. Rear seats of the 2014 LWB have new individual airline-style seats, which recline and feature three massage programs. Cargo space measures 18.4 cubic feet, enough for plenty of luggage. We were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 Explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. The rear seats fold flatter than on last year's models and the interior has been improved throughout. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The new 2006 Ford Explorer looks like the F-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. There are four different grilles to distinguish the various models. The combination of more chrome, bigger and bolder lamps and the new square-cornered aero mirrors make it look more like a Lexus SUV than a Ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way. They don't want you to mistake it, though, so every 2006 Explorer badge is about twice as big and twice as thick as those on 2005 models. Between the elaborate headlamps and the revamped rear lamps, it's a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside. With the V8 engine, the new Explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression Two new engines are available for the 2006 Ford Explorer. The 4.0-liter single-overhead-cam V6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. The V8 is the traditional 4.6-liter single-overhead-cam V8, but now it has three valves per cylinder, two intake and one exhaust, for better breathing, 53 additional horsepower at 292, and 300 pound-feet of torque. With the V6, you get a five-speed overdrive automatic. With the V8, you get a brand new Ford-built six-speed automatic overdrive transmission with full electronic control of upshifting, downshifting and torque converter functions. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter V6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides. Ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new Explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, Ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The AC system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires. This is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard Roll Stability Control (also used in Volvo, Land Rover, and other Ford Truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested. The new steering on the 2006 Explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any SUV in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the Explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on Earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Everything inside the Explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of Ford design boss J Mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the Eddie Bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove. Second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo. The third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding. And now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). With three seats, you get 13.6, then 43.9, then 83.7 cubic feet of space as the seats fold down; the five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded. The DVD-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, though the screen is on the small side. Ford designers may have gone over the top on the front door armrests, the latch pull, and the opening handle. The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new Explorer interior works very well. The new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard Explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary Ford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new Explorer, they have shown just how good they are at getting the basics right and getting the pricing realigned. They understand that today's customer is keenly aware of all the choices in this segment, is simply not willing to pay as much for a new SUV as they may have been five years ago, and that the new customer wants more goodies for the money or he or she will go elsewhere. This new Explorer is as much an exercise in cost accounting as truck design, and it succeeds on both counts. Overall, a great value. All-wheel drive is available, improving capability in winter weather. We found the LaCrosse relaxing to drive yet it will respond eagerly to driver input. The smooth ride of the current models is a big improvement over the pre-2010 models. Buick engineers working in Germany stiffened the body structure beginning with the 2010 models; a stiff structure is the key to a quiet cabin and smooth ride. Buick also improved the suspension starting with the 2010 models, and we found this latest version exhibits less body roll in the corners and less float on lumpy surfaces. The LaCrosse also offers continuously variable smart shocks, which adjust themselves in real time. Steering was quickened to complement the new chassis, so it steers more precisely, but without inducing noticeable torque steer under hard throttle. Adding to the feeling of security are four-wheel disc brakes that seem better proportioned, with better feel at the top of the pedal, than any GM brake system we can recall. All of this makes the LaCrosse a compelling choice. The LaCrosse can be configured for a wide range of customer priorities. It's distinctly original, and yet, the car remains recognizable as a Buick. There is a notably high belt line, and the wheels are snugly enclosed at the outer ends of the body. Viewed from the side, the profile is not unlike that of a sport-compact coupe, but the LaCrosse is a roomy car, and bigger than it looks. A coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.33 adds to the sleek effect and helps improve mileage and control wind noise. Teams on three continents participated in the design. The chassis team, based in Germany, adapted a version of the FWD/AWD platform developed for the Opel Insignia, and the interior was designed in China. The exterior design team, based in North America, took on the responsibility for creating a fresh, new Buick sheetmetal treatment. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression We drove a LaCrosse CXS with the touring package, plus the head-up display, navigation system, and heated and cooled leather seats. The 3.6-liter V6 allows for easy loafing about, even under 2000 rpm, and quickly revs to 7000 rpm when the throttle is pinned to the floor. When passing, we saw the automatic transmission shift directly from 2000 rpm to 5000 rpm, on the way to 7000 rpm, accelerating smoothly. That meant we were exposed to oncoming traffic for a minimum amount of time. The engine does need to rev to make peak power, seeming to catch fire at 4500 rpm. It makes a pleasantly balanced, muted mechanical whir when revved, but otherwise runs very quietly. The 3.6-liter V6 is rated at 280 hp and 259 lb-ft torque, and gets an EPA-estimated 17/27 mpg. The 2.4-liter Ecotec boasts variable valve timing and direct fuel injection, just like the big V6, and is rated 182 hp at 6700 rpm, and 172 lb-ft of torque at 4900 rpm. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 19/30 mpg City/Highway. All LaCrosse models come with a 6-speed automatic transmission, although gear ratios differ slightly. The 6-speed is a key component to the responsiveness of the LaCrosse. It's intelligent, smooth shifting, and it makes the engines more responsive. Driven as an automatic, the transmission is a gem. If you prefer to select a gear on your own, it will allow manual shifts. We were impressed with the transmission. We found using the Sport mode and shifting manually is hampered by the location of the shifter, which is relatively far back in the center console. It was hard on our wrist to maintain grip on the shifter, which tells us the LaCrosse wasn't really designed for people who have to shift and downshift every gear on their own. Our preference was to put it in Drive and let the automatic take its cues from our throttle input. The hydraulically assisted, variable-ratio steering that comes with V6 models is surprisingly neutral, especially considering the front-wheel-drive layout, and pleasingly quick and precise. There are only 2.75 turns, lock-to-lock, and yet the car never feels twitchy on the road. The system has variable assist programming, so it gave us a firm, controlled feeling at speed and very light effort when parking. Four-cylinder models come with an electric steering system with the same fast variable ratios. We saw no apparent torque steer in normal driving, just a strong return-to-center tendency. In hard cornering at full throttle we saw the steering pull slightly to the left. In short, the Buick LaCrosse handles very well. We found that when driven hard, the LaCrosse CXS with the touring package gripped the road well and felt solid and controlled. The touring package includes the best handling components, such as H-arm rear suspension, 19-inch wheels, and continuously variable real-time damping. With this equipment, a very favorable ride/handling tradeoff has been achieved. Relaxed driving on choppy roads reveals a high degree of cabin isolation from the pavement. It's the kind of ride quality intended to provide superior comfort on long, straight roads that run between endless cornfields, or at higher speeds on the interstate. We could hear tire deflection as we passed over cracked tarmac, but we did not feel anything annoying. The driving was quiet, smooth and relaxed, and yet, the car does not float or wander. The chassis is still connected with the road, conveying a definite sense of control and agility. The brakes are impressive both in terms of pedal effort and overall feel. The system uses 12.6 inch front discs and 12.4 inch read discs, with aluminum calipers on all four corners. They offer gentle stopping at the very top of the pedal, making it possible to bleed in braking gently, for smooth, progressive stops. As we look back on GM braking systems of the past, which had good stopping power but poor pedal feel, we are all the more satisfied with this improvement. Every car should have brakes this good. There has been a focused effort at noise control in the LaCrosse, with mostly excellent results. Buick engineers have clearly studied sources of noise, then systematically damped, cancelled, or isolated those sources using materials like acoustic glass, liquid and fabric sound deadeners, engineered seals and tuned mounting systems. The car runs quietly to begin with, given the gentle nature of the V6 engine and tall overall gearing that permits low-rpm operation. But these sound control efforts have definitely bourn fruit, as the LaCrosse has a sound level measured at a quiet 35.5 decibels at 70 mph. We're not sure how that compares with the competition, which is also achieving remarkable noise suppression, but we can tell you that during our drive time, the loudest noise in the cabin came from the air conditioning fan. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The LaCrosse interior uses thoughtfully considered materials, based on a highly detailed design concept. The front space is framed by a low-and-away instrument panel, opening up the area for front seat occupants and creating a light, airy atmosphere. Flat, low-relief controls are clustered in an orderly, symmetrical center stack, leaving generous portions of the dash surround free and clean. The overall effect is to create a graceful, uncluttered cockpit. Styled air vents on either side of the navigation screen, which mimic the design of vintage Buicks, have a quality feel and ample range of adjustment. At dusk, ice-blue ambient lighting becomes apparent on CXS models, with LED sources located around the audio controls, along the instrument panel and in the footwells. Two overhead spotlights softly highlight the seating areas. It's a visually sophisticated way of lighting the cabin, quite unexpected and inviting. The interior design team was based in China, where Buick cars are often purchased by owners who do not drive themselves, leading to special emphasis on interior detail and back seat accommodations. Rear legroom is generous, even with the front seats adjusted for taller drivers. The rear seat offers its own climate control system, and a seat-back-mounted DVD system is optional. A power rear sunshade is standard on the CXS. All models benefit from Buick's QuietTuning sound control initiatives. These include use of acoustic glass, triple door seals, acoustic mats and extensive use of sound-deadening materials. Engine and suspension noise and vibrations have been isolated through use of hydraulic bushings, covers and tuned air flow systems. LaCrosse CX and CXL models are complemented with dark poplar wood appliques, while the CXS has more technical titanium-type square trim details. Interior color choices include contrasting two-tone combinations: Cocoa/Light Cashmere and Dark Titanium/Light Titanium as well as (on leather-equipped models) solid Ebony. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary Recent history suggests Buick might not have made the short list among buyers who insist on original design, attention to detail, world-class chassis and drivetrain components, and advanced driving dynamics. But the current Buick LaCrosse is an attractive, advanced sedan with all those qualities. Based on what we see, those who take the time to shop Buick LaCrosse will be quite pleasantly surprised.
