This one-off example was designed and bodied by H. J. Mulliner for Mrs. Sybil Rhodes, an American married to British industrialist Frank E. Rhodes. In the prewar years, and for many years after, Rhodes made his fortune in concrete, paving the motorways crisscrossing Great Britain. It is believed that Sybil owned a French sports car when she lived in the United States; however, it was never shipped to the Rhodes estate in England. One person suggested that Frank Rhodes was not happy with the French after the war and would not permit anything French on his property (thus we would assume his wine cellar was stocked with bottles from the White Cliffs of Dover). With Sybil’s affection for French styling one can see the influence of esteemed Paris salons such as Franay and Saoutchik in the H. J. Mulliner design, particularly the rear deck (boot) with its beautiful chrome fin. The entire body is aluminum under which is the early, whisper-silent, Rolls-Royce straight six coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. A close-coupled design, the rear is taken up by a wonderfully British traveling cocktail bar. The Long Road to Restoration Owned today by a renowned Pennsylvania collector , the car has been restored to its original H. J. Mulliner design and color scheme. The owner, who is known for his meticulous restorations had spent years and over 5000 hours producing a most magnificent car to it glory, admitted that he had not intended this car to be quite such a project. “I got it from Florida and started working on it, cleaning it up; I figured I would just turn it into a nice driver,” he recalls. But as is often the case with a restoration, one thing led to another. There was more to this car than originally met the eye. “Along the way, I acquired original plans and other documents that made me more and more interested in this new project. A lot of times with coach built cars changes are made that never get noted in the original plans. This car was originally supposed to have a dickey seat (rumble seat) behind the passenger compartment. At some point this was changed and a full length trunk was put in its place. Also, they had designed the spare tire to be inserted through the license plate door, but that would never have worked based on the size of the spare, so that design was changed as well. But the most significant factors about the car were masked under years of old paint and restoration work.” As the restoration team began prepping the car they discovered original details that may have been covered over for as long as 30 years. While stripping the paint (many layers including the visible coats of blue, yellow and then the original black) they found holes running down the center of the trunk, as well as along the trailing edges of the rear fenders. “These were details that had been removed and the holes filled,” says the owner. “At about the same time we discovered a few rusty pieces of metal in a box in the trunk. We didn’t even know that there was a built in box in the trunk, but found it recessed far forward of the rear axle and covered over. It was then that we started to realize maybe we had something even more special than we already knew.” Those rusty pieces of metal turned out to be parts of an original deck lid fin. There were also a couple of threaded bolts that matched the uncovered holes. By placing advertisements on the Internet, and in British newspapers both in and around the area of the old Rhodes Estate, letters started coming in. “During our research we found out that there were more than the one set of plans at Hunt House (storage of Rolls-Royce records). The second plan showed the elimination of the Dickey seat and a different arrangement of the refreshment (liquor and wine) cabinet. Later there was a note that was in conflict with the original plans. The note called for the placement of the spare tire forward in the boot behind the passenger seat. The prior plan shows its placement to the aft of the trunk, in a well. The measurement for the opening to house the spare was actually several inches shorter than the spare tire!” The owner managed to contact the son of the Rhodes family chauffeur who had lived at Thorpe Underwood Hall, the Rhodes’ palatial country estate. Further letters and calls noted that sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s Mrs. Rhodes had an accident with WGC48 that damaged the left front fender, left rear fender and rear of the boot. The car was disposed of shortly thereafter. It is believe that the damaged Silver Wraith was sold to Myers- Brunell, which handled Rolls-Royces and had an extensive fabricating shop. The car was repaired; however, the side trim and center boot molding were not replaced. The holes were filled in and the sections sprayed in black. It was shipped to the United States where it found a new owner. Since then this French influenced Silver Wraith has remained in the U.S., the country where its original owner was born. As the last of the air-cooled 911s, they are the most developed of the original formula that first appeared in 1963. The layout of the instruments, the sheetmetal of the door, and the entire greenhouse is fundamentally unchanged from the original 911, and these cars have a feeling of solidity and craftsmanship that was not only missing from the 996 generation that replaced the 993, but is missing from almost every car made in the last 20 years. Yet despite this old-world craftsmanship and the occasional sign that the fundamental architecture dates back to the 1960s, the 993 is impressively modern, even eighteen years after its introduction. The sophisticated multilink rear suspension and massive rear tires tame the often-derided rear placement of the engine, while the twin plug 3.6 liter flat-6 is a torquey high-performance unit that is easy to live and use. The brakes, always a Porsche strong suit, are superb, and the gearbox is Porsche’s robust 6-speed G50 unit. Thus, the 993 lies at a fascinating intersection that separates it from every other 911. Sophisticated and high performance even compared to modern cars, yet capturing the classic essence of the original 911, the 993 is the best of both worlds, and it’s no surprise that they are worth considerably more than the cars that replaced them. 993s are true classics that can be driven and enjoyed daily, and from an investment standpoint, are positioned to continue to appreciate. The 993 was available in a variety of forms, with naturally-aspirated and turbocharged engines, rear and four wheel drive, wide and narrow bodies, and in open and closed forms. One of the most collectible of all the variants is the Carrera 2S. Combining the clean profile and naturally-aspirated 3.6 liter twin plug flat six of the Carrera 2 with the widened flares the Carrera 2S is an aggressive yet beautiful car with tremendous presence, and along with the Carrera 4S is the most sought-after and valuable naturally-aspirated 993 that was available in the US. Many collectors prefer the 2S over the 4S since low mile cars will likely not be used in the snow. This car is an extremely complete Polar Silver ($2955 upgrade), with original manual pack with books (and even Porsche original window sticker, all three original keys, tools, jack, spare tire, and even the plastic gloves for use when changing the spare. Also intact are the spare tire and compressor. The original radio and factory upgraded sound system are intact and like everything on the car is in good working order. The car’s first owner from new to 2013 never drove it in the rain. The original Porsche radio is included. The second owner from 2013 to 2014 continued the rain free ownership. He is relocating to the east coast and is hence moving the car on. The car has never had any accidents. The car still wears the original paint except a repair to the right rear quarter panel from a piece of debris thrown up on the freeway by the right front tire. The car is in spectacular condition.. The body is extremely straight and displays excellent gaps since it has been unharmed. Of course zero rust. The wheels are excellent with no curb rash. The lights and glass are excellent throughout. The headlights look brand new as only a garaged AND covered car can have. All panels operate properly and the struts for both front and rear decklids work well. The interior is extremely nice considering that it is original. There is minor wear on the driver’s seat bolster, but the leather is otherwise excellent, and it is clear that the car has been garaged for the duration of its life. The dashboard, door panels, and center console are all upholstered in matching green leather and are in excellent shape. The headliner is also excellent, as are all switches, controls, and instruments. The carpets are excellent other than a small area where it is worn on the left sill from driver ingress/egress. The engine compartment and trunk are both unmodified and in nice original condition. The engine is tidy and correct in appearance and is a Varioram unit which has more torque and power than the early 993 motors. The trunk is in fine shape and is complete with collapsible spare tire (never used), trickle charger, tool roll with tools, and jack. The car runs and drives as though it were new. The engine is powerful, the clutch reassuring in its take-up, and the synchromesh excellent even into first gear. The chassis is composed with no noise or squeaks. It has been consistently maintained by the highly-regarded Porsche specialist in Costa Mesa CA or the Porsche dealer in Newport Beach CA. It has had religious synthetic oil changes every couple thousand miles and in some cases less than a couple hundred miles if more than 6 months lapsed since last change. The engine looks brand new. It was not detailed for photos. This is what an engine compartment looks like on a car that has never been in the rain. The car feels extremely solid and is a pleasure to drive, a testament to the craftsmanship with which the air-cooled cars were built and a history with no damage. Please do not request donations: The following is only part of an article featuring this car in Car Collector Magazine plus a Rolls Royce book Featuring this car on the cover and great details in the chapter about it. This one-off example was designed and bodied by H. J. Mulliner for Mrs. Sybil Rhodes, an American married to British industrialist Frank E. Rhodes. In the prewar years, and for many years after, Rhodes made his fortune in concrete, paving the motorways crisscrossing Great Britain. It is believed that Sybil owned a French sports car when she lived in the United States; however, it was never shipped to the Rhodes estate in England. One person suggested that Frank Rhodes was not happy with the French after the war and would not permit anything French on his property (thus we would assume his wine cellar was stocked with bottles from the White Cliffs of Dover). With Sybil’s affection for French styling one can see the influence of esteemed Paris salons such as Franay and Saoutchik in the H. J. Mulliner design, particularly the rear deck (boot) with its beautiful chrome fin. The entire body is aluminum under which is the early, whisper-silent, Rolls-Royce straight six coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. A close-coupled design, the rear is taken up by a wonderfully British traveling cocktail bar. The Long Road to Restoration Owned today by a renowned Pennsylvania collector , the car has been restored to its original H. J. Mulliner design and color scheme. The owner, who is known for his meticulous restorations had spent years and over 5000 hours producing a most magnificent car to it glory, admitted that he had not intended this car to be quite such a project. “I got it from Florida and started working on it, cleaning it up; I figured I would just turn it into a nice driver,” he recalls. But as is often the case with a restoration, one thing led to another. There was more to this car than originally met the eye. “Along the way, I acquired original plans and other documents that made me more and more interested in this new project. A lot of times with coach built cars changes are made that never get noted in the original plans. This car was originally supposed to have a dickey seat (rumble seat) behind the passenger compartment. At some point this was changed and a full length trunk was put in its place. Also, they had designed the spare tire to be inserted through the license plate door, but that would never have worked based on the size of the spare, so that design was changed as well. But the most significant factors about the car were masked under years of old paint and restoration work.” As the restoration team began prepping the car they discovered original details that may have been covered over for as long as 30 years. While stripping the paint (many layers including the visible coats of blue, yellow and then the original black) they found holes running down the center of the trunk, as well as along the trailing edges of the rear fenders. “These were details that had been removed and the holes filled,” says the owner. “At about the same time we discovered a few rusty pieces of metal in a box in the trunk. We didn’t even know that there was a built in box in the trunk, but found it recessed far forward of the rear axle and covered over. It was then that we started to realize maybe we had something even more special than we already knew.” Those rusty pieces of metal turned out to be parts of an original deck lid fin. There were also a couple of threaded bolts that matched the uncovered holes. By placing advertisements on the Internet, and in British newspapers both in and around the area of the old Rhodes Estate, letters started coming in. “During our research we found out that there were more than the one set of plans at Hunt House (storage of Rolls-Royce records). The second plan showed the elimination of the Dickey seat and a different arrangement of the refreshment (liquor and wine) cabinet. Later there was a note that was in conflict with the original plans. The note called for the placement of the spare tire forward in the boot behind the passenger seat. The prior plan shows its placement to the aft of the trunk, in a well. The measurement for the opening to house the spare was actually several inches shorter than the spare tire!” The owner managed to contact the son of the Rhodes family chauffeur who had lived at Thorpe Underwood Hall, the Rhodes’ palatial country estate. Further letters and calls noted that sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s Mrs. Rhodes had an accident with WGC48 that damaged the left front fender, left rear fender and rear of the boot. The car was disposed of shortly thereafter. It is believe that the damaged Silver Wraith was sold to Myers- Brunell, which handled Rolls-Royces and had an extensive fabricating shop. The car was repaired; however, the side trim and center boot molding were not replaced. The holes were filled in and the sections sprayed in black. It was shipped to the United States where it found a new owner. Since then this French influenced Silver Wraith has remained in the U.S., the country where its original owner was born. They are among the best-built Porsches ever. Their reliability and value are making them fantastic buys. These $150k supercars can now be had at a fraction of their original cost. Plus, they are something you can drive every day. The Mezger turbo engine is legendary. It’s ability to handle massive power and need very little maintenance is unheard of. We have clients that have well surpassed 200k miles on their Turbos. This Porsche was built in October 2001 and sold new by Crown Porsche in Charlottesville, Virginia on November 20th, 2001. It was nicely optioned from the factory with the following: Bose sound system with CD player Supple leather front and rear seats Arctic silver interior package Metropol blue floor mat Rear center console painted arctic silver 3-spoke steering wheel to match interior leather Aluminum instrument dials Aluminum/leather shifter and brake handle. I am the proud second owner of this 2006 California Cayman S. It has several unique features, the most of visible of which is the clear engine cover which shows off the beautifully painted intakes and IPD competition plenum. This one-off modification makes this 987 stand out from any other Porsche regardless of price. On the spirited drive to your destination you'll never feel the understeer common in Caymans thanks to the GMG lower control arms and superbly grippy new Bridgestone RE-71R tires. Meanwhile, the other performance upgrades should help you pull away from any other Cayman (except for the GT4). Should you need directions, or a desire to listen to something other than the flat six directly behind you, this Cayman has a Pioneer AVIC head unit with Bluetooth, traffic-enabled navigation, Pandora, and an iPod connection. It was installed by Walnut Creek Customs who made a custom surround for it with full color and texture match to the original interior. I have many of the original parts including the stock aluminum engine cover and carpeting, fog lamps, and yellow side markers. Unlike many other modified cars for sale this Cayman will pass CA smog without a problem, and in fact just did with registration good through January 2018. The car got a clean bill of health at its last service done by GMG. There is, of course, the regular wear and tear one would expect on a 2006 car but it is in otherwise great condition. Porsche sought to develop a new Le Mans prototype to replace the venerable GT1, which was powered by a 5.5-liter V-10 engine. However, a change in FIA rules quickly shelved their racing plans while the model was in development, but Porsche remained undeterred and continued forward with plans to make the platform suitable for road use. To attract attention to their stand at the Paris Motor Show in 2000, Porsche displayed a road-going concept of the car alongside their other production models. With the amount of attention that the concept received combined with additional revenue from the Cayenne, Porsche decided to go ahead and produce the car. The Carrera GT was first offered for sale in 2004, alongside the Ferrari Enzo, Ford GT, and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, and it more than held its own in what proved to be an incredible year for supercars. The materials that went into the construction of the Carrera GT were simply that of an engineer’s dream. By utilizing a carbon-fiber monocoque and sub-frame, as well as carbon-ceramic brakes, Porsche’s engineers pushed the envelope of what was mechanically possible in order to offer a car that was as light as it was strong. Porsche also designed a three-disc carbon-fiber racing clutch for the car, which measured 7.5 inches in diameter and was about a third the size of a normal clutch. Similar attention to detail was applied to nearly every facet of the car. The ultra-lightweight forged magnesium wheels had center-locking bolts that were color-coded for each side of the car, ensuring that wrong bolts were never put on the incorrect side of the car. At the heart of the Carrera GT lies a monstrous 5.7-liter V-10 engine, the first V-10 produced for use in a Porsche. Performance was incredible, with 605 horsepower and 435 foot-pounds of torque, and the Carrera GT could rocket from 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds, toward a top speed of 205 mph. The Carrera GT truly showed its racing roots when one piloted by Walter Röhrl lapped the July 2004 Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:28, which was a record for a Porsche that was not broken until the release of the 911 GT2 RS in 2010. Slip into the Carrera GT’s carbon-fiber bucket seats and it is clear that Porsche’s engineers did not limit the car’s track-focused nature to just the exterior and mechanical components. Every surface within reach is either leather, aluminum, or carbon fiber, and nothing in the car, minus the requisite stereo with CD player and air conditioning, distracts the driver from the task at hand. Everything else in the cockpit is typical Porsche, from the instrument layout with the tachometer in the center to the left-hand placement of the ignition. Porsche topped the gear shifter, which was mated to a six-speed manual transmission, with a wooden shift knob, tying an organic link from past models into their technological tour de force, thereby showing that their most powerful creation to date indeed had a soul. By the time production ceased, 1,270 examples had been built. The Carrera GT offered here has had only one private owner since new and presently records fewer than 3,181 actual miles. It has had a fresh service by Porsche of Newport Beach, at 3,080 miles. It is offered with its original books, and two keys, as well as a center-lock socket, an air compressor, and the Tire Mobility System. Additional options noted include manual air conditioning and the Porsche/Becker CD-radio. When new, journalists hailed the Carrera GT as one of the greatest supercars of all time, as it featured incredible performance in a lightweight, race-ready package that had gorgeous bodywork. This original contract shows that the car was purchased for $2,671.45 with a balance of $1,929.50 financed and 30 monthly payments of $75.10. The car was paid off in 1958 as was evidenced in a GMAC letter dated May 12, 1958. (Copy of loan payoff letter is included.) The first owner (James Beckner) kept this car for just under 30 years as was reflected in the Texas “Certificate of Title” showing the transfer of the car from James Beckner to Kenneth Donald of Arlington, Texas on May 11, 1985. (Original Texas title document is included.) On June 23, 1987 Frank Ince of Des Moines, Iowa was issued a Iowa “Certifiacte of Title” showing the previous owner to be George Woolfus of Atlanta, Georgia.
