Original light blue with blue interior. Was a complete matching car 4 months ago. Has been media blasted. ALL parts needed to make this a RUST FREE 65' Fastback goes with sale. I have OVER $3000 alone in new body parts/panels. Needs bodywork completed and put back together. I have all original parts including glass and complete interior. Also have a 1965 Ford Mustang coupe parts car that goes with sale. This 65' parts car is complete with its V8 289 and auto transmission. It also has complete black interior. Both of these have CLEAN AND CLEAR titles. Im sure I will regret selling this..Ill never own a Fastback like this again as they are so extremely rare and expensive..But I have gotten way to busy at work to complete this car and my wife wants both of these Mustangs gone. I bought this car in April of 2013 to convert it into a KITT replica from the classic 1980's television series Knight Rider. I have enjoyed it ever since, especially watching it come together. Through FaceBook and other public outlets, I have made many new friends and made contact with hundreds of fellow replica builders around the world. It has been a great experience! I love this car but I'm ready to let it go to a new home! There is nothing wrong with the vehicle and it is fully paid off, so I am not in a hurry to sell it. It served it's purpose for me and I no longer need it to feel fulfilled! So in order to answer some common questions, I have created a Question and Answer section below with lots of pertinent information. If I've missed anything, please feel free to contact me and I can better answer your questions. Q: What year and model is your car? A: My replica is a 1991 Pontiac Firebird, base trim model. Q: What made you decide to use this particular vehicle and not an earlier model? A: I felt more comfortable driving around in a 90’s car than an 80’s car. Primarily because of advances that were made during the 10 years Pontiac produced the Third Gen Firebird; engine, suspension, impact zones, bonding agents, etc. Q: Is your car 100% screen accurate compared to KITT in the television series? A: Since my car is a 1991 model, it does not have the Trans Am side vents near the front wheel fenders. It also retains the ground effects that only were produced during the 1991 and 1992 model run. If you watch old episodes of the series and look carefully, you'll spot countless variations of the car throughout the show. Many different cars were used for a variety to shots. Therefore it is impossible to find a replica that is 100% accurate! Q: Why did you keep the 1991/1992 ground effects on your car? A: I was inspired by another replica out there that was built using a 1992 Firebird base model with a V6 engine. In my opinion it was one of the finest KITT’s ever produced by a conversion enthusiast. It’s still my favorite! Plus the ground effects make my KITT stand out. Q: What have you done so far to your replica? A: All new paint, new headliner, new carpet, repainted center console from a 1982 Trans Am, new center console cover, PMD seats with new upholstery, and of course the infamous 4th season front nose with top of the line quality LED scanner, and a high-end blackout taillight cover (partially installed). Also, the heavily sought after 15” Turbocast wheels with matching bowling ball hubcaps. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Oh, and new tires. Less than 500 miles on them!Q: Where did you have your car painted?A: My car was painted by a company in Northridge, California called Picture Car Warehouse. They are a motion picture car supplier that has been building cars and props for multi-million dollar films for decades, such as The Fast and the Furious series, the Judge motorcycle from the movie Dredd, vehicles from the films Argo and Rush Hour 3, just to name a few. You can go to their website and see some of their work. You can also google the owner Ted Moser and view a short film made about him and his process. They did a stellar job on the car, which cost close to $8000 to complete. I had another source value the paint job at $10,000! The result is a finish that looks like a black mirror when you look into it! The paint was a two-stage application and was wet-sanded afterwards in order to remove ripples and orange peel. You could literally use the reflection of this car to get ready in the morning it's that clear! Q: What is your favorite part? A: I would have to say besides the super cool scanner, the Turbocast wheels. They are the accurate 15x7 size and are hard to come by. They’re almost like the holy grail of Knight Rider conversion parts. Once you put them on your car, you immediately see KITT materializing before your eyes. And they’re expensive! Q: Why did you choose a car without T-Tops and a manual transmission? A: I bought my car in original condition. It was a great price and didn’t require any real TLC to function. Not having T-Tops was a trade-off for a car that had not been molested or modified with questionable aftermarket parts. Same with the stick shift transmission! The only part of the car that is not original is the Formula/Trans Am hood that was added during the painting process. It is the bulge hood with the scoop running down the center. And it makes the car look menacing! Q: What vendors did you use to build your replica? A: Lectric Enterprises (Brenon Fulbright), Jay Ohrberg, Knight Designs (Billy Gunter), and Advanced Designs in Automotive Technology (Don Colie). These are all high quality vendors. Q: How does the front scanner work?A: Very simply! There is a control box inside the car that you can operate the scanner with. You can adjust the speed at which the scanner oscillates, the pattern, and there are even sounds built in which filter out through a waterproof marine speaker mounted underneath the chassis of the car.Q: Who designed your scanner?A: A company called Lectric Enterprises. One of the best vendors in the business. The cost was close to $700. It came with the control box mentioned above! Eventually I changed out the scanner with another vendor because it fitmy fiberglass bumper better, but I was able to use the original control box with. As a bonus the new owner will received a spare scanner built by a vendor named Joe Huth. This scanner is considered one of the most screen accurate available! Q: Why should I buy your unfinished replica when I can build one on my own for less? A: If I had to do it over again, I would buy a finished replica instead of building one from scratch. Getting a car painted is easy (albeit expensive), and doing maintenance is not overly challenging. But wait times for parts, especially the highest quality, can take a long time. Unless you have access to a body shop, fiberglass materials, electronics components, upholstery, a wealth of high-end tools and machinery, building a car for under $20,000 on your own will be very difficult. Plus you have to have the knowledge to do it all! Q: How much has been invested in the car?A: A good friend and fellow replica builder once said to me: "I stopped counting after $10K!" Honestly I don't know the exact amount, but so far somewhere in the neighborhood of $25K, excluding the high quality dashboard I have on order with Knight Designs.Q: What does a completed Knight Rider KITT replica cost?I estimate that a fully-functioning KITT replica with all the bells and whistles would cost at least $35K. And the price can only go up from there! I once saw a KITT that could back out of the driveway on its own! Q: Does your car have a clear title? A: My car has a 100% free and clear California title! I will include a detailed Auto Check report for free for your piece of mind. The registration and tags are paid up and are good till March of 2016! Also, the car recently passed California’s strict emissions test, one of the fiercest in the nation. Q: Are there any other upgrades to the car that you have not mentioned? A: Probably. Building one of these cars is very complex and time consuming. I have done my best in regards to summarizing the inventory of work done to the vehicle. As an added bonus I will also INCLUDE ALL EXTRA pieces that I acquired during the project. For instance, I have a single extra PMD seat (a set usually costs $400), miscellaneous interior plastics, a genuine 1982 Trans Am rear bumper cover, and much more. It will ALL go to the new owner! I will load it up inside the car when it is delivered. Oh, and I have a few boxes of very expensive Dynamat sound deadener sheets… that stuff is not cheap! Q: Do you have anymore pictures of the car?A: Yes, a boat load. But they cannot all fit on eBay. I have some on my FaceBook page and I can also provide more to interested parties.Q: What else does the car need to be a complete replica?A: The exterior is 99% complete. It just needs the rear blackout installed over the taillights. That piece is included in the sale. Other than that, the front passenger hubcaps needs to be refinished because I scratched it on a curb. But that is an easy fix. I have 95% of all the parts needed to complete the inside of the car, the dash, the gauges, the custom Gullwing steering wheel and switchpods, and the lower console apparatus. Not only that, but at least one of these lookers has been much improved versus the donor whence it came. Plus, aren't businesses in the business of making profits? In a sense, then, these three cars represent their respective makers' best foot forward. But they also highlight the club feet, as all three reveal their manufacturers' current weaknesses. Starting with the Benz, we're talking bad design, inside and out. Sure, the CLS is decent-looking, but this sleek, sloped-roof "coupe" segment is all about sexy metal appeal. Mercedes should know this, as the automaker invented it! But the Benz looks like a clenched fist, which may very well be sexy to the German mind-set. Compared with the other two contenders, the CLS comes off a little dumpy and a tad frumpy. The interior is about to be refreshed, and boy howdy, it needs it. The exterior is going to have to wait a while. The Gran Coupe, meanwhile, exhibits BMW's new favorite sin: sloth, in terms of porky weight (4603 pounds, the heaviest in our test by nearly 200 pounds more than the S7) and laggard throttle response. As for the Audi, the S7 is yet another chapter of too much weight hanging off the wrong side of the front halfshafts, resulting in numb steering feel and sketchy, make-your-palms-sweat understeer. As is often said, there is no perfect car. Yet these three cars come closer to the Platonic automotive ideal than most. I feel justified and factual in stating that today's "loser" (for lack of a softer synonym) might just be the very best third-place finisher in Motor Trend history. I'd be thrilled to wake up and find its keys in a bowl near my front door. That third-place car is the Mercedes-Benz CLS550, the car that started it all. "Crazy how much changes in a year or so," said executive editor Ron Kiino. "The last time we compared a CLS550 (against the regular-flavor A7 and the Jaguar XJ -- "High Fashion and Misdemeanors," September 2011), it offered the best combo of sport and luxury. Now, I find myself ranking it third." The CLS has done nothing wrong. It's just that the competition artfully stepped up their games. A year ago BMW didn't even have an offering in this high-concept segment. And the A7, while pretty much OK (and quite easy on the eyes) just couldn't compete with the big Benz's overall might and refinement. Second place goes to the Audi S7, with a big asterisk. Why? Kiino ranked it first. "C'mon, this is a 420-hp hatchback with AWD and a seven-speed dual-clutch with launch control. I give it the first-place nod, as it's the best combo of speed, luxury, style, and -- what differentiates it from the others -- utility." In fact, Scott and I (almost) agree. "This car is obscenely fast in a straight line. Luxury sedans with liftgates shouldn't be able to do this," said Evans. "It doubles down by being ridiculously quick in corners as well. The grip is fantastic and the weapons-grade torque absolutely flings you out of every turn." Compared with the CLS, the Audi feels fun -- as if Audi included a little devil sitting on your shoulder, whispering, "Do it, do it, do it faster! Now do it again!" But as much fun as the S7 is, Scott and I couldn't get past the sadly typical bad Audi steering feel. Comfort mode is lacking and Dynamic is overboosted -- there's no sweet spot. Ron described it as "numb but precise." Fair enough. But the mid-corner understeer can best be described as middling. But in this company, and especially at this price, it's unacceptable. Also, the carbon-fiber interior is a little silly and tacky. The S7 is a fabulous car, no doubt, but we found one that's better. Meet Goldilocks, aka the BMW 650i xDrive Gran Coupe. "This is what the F10 5 Series should have been from day one," opined Evans. "Forget this Gran Coupe nonsense -- just call this thing the 5 Series and let the current car quietly fade from memory." Scott went on to say that this "may be BMW's best car at the moment." I sure think it is, and have been referring to it as "my favorite BMW" since I first drove it back in August. As much as I like the looks of the Audi S7, there's simply something more seductive about the Gran Coupe. Even Ron agreed. "Highest curb appeal here, and the valets are more likely to put this one up front." More surprising is the Gran Coupe's interior, the best BMW's ever done by several kilometers. From the two-tone leather to the funky speaker grilles to the ballsy asymmetric center-stack treatment (how can you not love three separate rows of French stitching spreading up and out toward the windshield like some sort of vine?), almost every inch of the car's innards has been crafted to a standard higher than that of any Audi or Mercedes. More important, the Gran Coupe is the first car of its type (four-door coupes) with an interior as radical as its exterior Is the Gran Coupe as awesome on our favorite back roads as the S7? No. "The car has nice moves, but it's just not as sharp as the Audi," said Kiino. However, it's plenty sharp. Weight is an issue in sharp corners, of course, but not that much of an issue. "Drives smaller than it is," added Evans. "I found it easy to forget how fast I was going and how big this car is, until I hit a sharp corner. Otherwise, it's a pleasure to drive hard. Nice transitions; very smooth." Like all three competitors, the BMW is AWD. However, to me it felt the most RWD-biased. I also thought it had the best steering feel, as did Evans. "There's a nice weight to the inputs that feels pretty natural. More important, the steering feel is surprisingly good, especially considering that it's AWD and that recent BMWs have demonstrated poor steering feel." If this test were just about pure, back-road capability, the S7 would get the nod. But as the BMW is about 95 percent as capable as the Audi (identical 0.94 max g, too), but offers so much more in desirability, craftsmanship, and that all-important X-factor, we're calling it the winner. As such, "The Ultimate Driving Machine" just took on a whole new meaning. Is the Gran Coupe as awesome on our favorite back roads as the S7? No. "The car has nice moves, but it's just not as sharp as the Audi," said Kiino. However, it's plenty sharp. Weight is an issue in sharp corners, of course, but not that much of an issue. "Drives smaller than it is," added Evans. "I found it easy to forget how fast I was going and how big this car is, until I hit a sharp corner. Otherwise, it's a pleasure to drive hard. The power of networking is amazing! Market I've been collecting classic cars and trucks for over fifteen years now and have seen a lot happen. I've seen the hobby continue to grow not only at the auctions but also with the amount of television shows, magazines and websites that are related to classic cars in some form or another. I strongly believe the classic car market is a great place to invest in. When the economy is strong, the classic car market is extremely strong. When the economy isn't so strong the classic car market holds its own. I've sold classic cars and trucks in both economic conditions. The reason classic cars make such a great investment is because people are crazy about cars, especially the classics! I've learned it's not just the United States; it’s the entire world. Barrett Jackson stated, "Foreigners can sometimes represent 25% of the registered bidders at one of our auctions." At the Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale, AZ 2011 they stated, "There was a registered bidder from every state in the USA.” I've also learned that no matter the gender or age, all different people appreciate this hobby. Another example would be the Barrett Jackson auto auctions; not only do millions of people watch it live on the Speed Channel but hundreds of thousands of people attend these auctions. Every year the attendance of visitors at the event and number of viewers on T.V. increase. Over the years I've noticed that the extremely detailed classic cars have always commanded a higher price. Even people who don't have any classic car experience can recognize and appreciate attention to detail. Currently the overall market is on the raise once again. Certain classic cars are on the rise and others are on the decline. Typically, the classic cars that are on the rise are the cars that a lot of people don't own. In other words, there are classic cars that haven't saturated the market. The cars that are at every car show and auction and page on the Internet for sale are the ones that aren't changing in value or are slowly on the decline. Of course, if the car is spectacular it will command a higher price as I mentioned. It's all about supply and demand, not a good or bad economy. Custom cars have remained strong because each car is different from the next one. They each have their own character. “I’m putting my money where my mouth is” I’m just a 38 year old blue collar guy who was working full time selling new and used Mercedes Benz. I was selling my classic cars and trucks part time. Although I had my used car dealers license I didn’t have a facility that was open to the public. Overall things were going just fine. However, my dream was to open my own classic car and truck dealership. I decided to give up my full time job with health insurance and a 401K to open a new classic and truck dealership. I had to invest a ton of money to make that happen and now have a lot more overhead. Do you think I would’ve done all that if I didn’t think the classic car and truck market wasn’t going to remain strong? I consign anywhere from three to eight cars at each Barrett Jackson auto auction at no reserve because I know there’s always going to be bidders for classic cars and trucks. Description2014 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS Coupe MS CLASSIC CARS Inspired! This is an absolutely stunning automobile! Only 1,488 one owner miles! Yes, only 1,488 miles! The Chevrolet Camaro was redesigned for 2014 with many enhancements! This car was purchased from Greenwood’s Hubbard Chevrolet in Hubbard, OH in May of 2014 by a married couple. They're original plan was to enjoy it but after a few months they realized it would spend more time in the garage then on the road so they decided to sell it. I purchased it in late August with 1020 miles and have driven it a few hundred miles. How could I not drive this car? This car is unlike many newer Camaros on the road and gets a ton of attention! The exterior color is beautiful Summit white with black full-length dual Indy stripes. This is a very rare factory $510.00 option. These stripes make the car look mean. They remind me a lot of the Eleanor Mustang stripes. Search the market for 2014 Camaros with this stripe package and you’ll see how little exist! Over the years I’ve enjoyed designing classic vehicles. I wanted to give this car some personal touches so I removed the factory front grill white SS emblem for a smoother look. I also removed the rear deck lid white SS emblem and replaced it with a red SS emblem. I added two red SS emblems on the front fenders under the Camaro emblem. I also added a set of black rear quarter stripes as well. These little upgrades add the extra touch. Both factory white SS emblems are included and can easily be changed back. The rear quarter stripes can also be removed easily! The last thing I did to the car was remove the factory wheels and added a set of 20” Niche Ritz matte black wheels. I then had the wheel lip painted red to match the red emblems which looks amazing. The front wheels are 20x9 and the rear wheels are 20x10. The factory wheel sensors were swapped so there wouldn’t be any issues with the tire pressure monitoring system. I used the new factory Pirelli P Zero tires which are 245/45/ZR20 on the front and 275/40/ZR20 on the rear. This entire ordeal was almost $2000 all said and done! ***The original factory wheels are included with the sale. One of the factory wheels has a slight scuff on the lip from shipping. *** The black interior looks and smells band new. It’s extremely comfortable and has many great features that are listed on the window sticker below! The engine compartment is spotless and is home to the 6.2L V8 with 426 HP. The engine is coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission. The engine sounds great out the factory installed performance exhaust. This car hasn’t even had its first oil change! Factory optional equipment includes the following: • Dual mode performance exhaust $895.00 • Black full-length dual Indy stripes package $510.00 • Performance short throw shifter $280.00 • Strut tower brace $160.00 The window sticker, owner’s manuals and both sets of keys are included! The car has the balances of all factory warranties including 2 year/24,000 scheduled oil change and filter, 3 year/36,000 bumper to bumper and 5 year/100,000 powertrain! I started paying close attention to the market and knew one day I would purchase one. I was very close to purchasing a 2010 with only 1,300 miles and then stumbled upon this car which was four years newer. The price difference between the 2010 and 2014 isn’t much especially considering the redesign and all the transferrable warranties. Not to mention, the resale value as well. When I came across this car I immediately feel in love. My favorite color is white and the black full length Indy stripes put the icing on the cake. Before I had even got the car I was ordering everything I was going to change to give it my own touch. I drove the car a few hundred miles and enjoyed every minute of it. This is an industry with no real guidelines and everyone's opinion is completely different. The average consumer doesn’t realize classic vehicles weren’t restored at the factory and are being restored by people in their garages. Everyone’s level of restoration experience is different and it shows in the restoration. An example would be a classic vehicle that's being advertised as an original model with matching numbers could be a phony with a reproduction trim tag and re stamped numbers on the engine block, etc. Another example would be a classic vehicle is being advertised as a full restoration when indeed only a few things have been restored. There are many classic vehicles listed for sale that have cosmetic and mechanical issues with such items as the lights, body hinges, gauges, window components, steering components, upholstery, engine leaks and tuning, radiators, transmission, rear end, brake components and suspension components. The consumers are spending thousands of dollars repairing the classic vehicles they've purchased after the sale. At MS CLASSIC CARS I own the entire inventory and take pride in what I sell. With so many 08 and 09 IS-F's on the market at sub 40k prices it's prudent to explain why the 2010 is worth the extra coin for those who haven't researched these cars. The differences for the 2010 IS-F are as follows: Hard Drive Based Navigation (Upgradeable via USB with Lexus Map updates). Not DVD based like the old ISF. Interface and maps are much more high-res. USB/Ipod/Bluetooth Integration True Mechanical LSD (not "e-LSD" that is terrible). The acceleration from a dig or out of corners is entirely changed. Transforms the car on and off the track (though my car has never been tracked).Revised Suspension New Sport Steering Configuration Black Interior Trim Around NavigationNew Wheel Design Overall the 2010's are the first revised version of the IS-F and a distinct upgrade compared to the 2008/9. The 08/09's were also susceptible to navigation failure as well as waterpump leaking. The waterpump on this car was pre-emptively replaced by Lexus with the new version under warranty to protect against this possibility in the future. Car is BONE stock with professionally tinted windows. 2 sets of keys, owner's manual, ready to go. No mechanical problems in any way. Front bumper was repainted by a Lexus dealer to get rid of the rock chips.Tiny scratch on the passenger side. Lots of high resolution pictures. Clean title - I still owe a bit on the car so once I receive payment you'll get the title. All this can be worked out easily. *May consider a trade for a LS460*

It's the Pentastar V6, new last year to Chrysler, named one of Ward's 10 Best Engines for 2011. The new engine makes considerably more power with slightly better fuel mileage, an EPA-estimated 17 City/21 Highway mpg. It's smaller, lighter, and more advanced than the engine it replaces. A smooth new 5-speed automatic transmission for 2012 replaces last year's inadequate 4-speed. The transmission is well behaved and doesn't hunt for gears. It was designed for use with Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi engine, so it maintains Jeep-like industrial strength. A Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is rated to tow 3500 pounds. The 2012 Wrangler Unlimited four-door is totally civilized, thanks partly to the smoothness of the new engine. The Pentastar block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. This pays off with a smooth and silent interior, even at 80 mph in the hardtop Wrangler. The Wrangler Unlimited corners well. The Wrangler Unlimited is built on a wheelbase that's 21 inches longer than that of the regular Wrangler. The soft top that comes standard slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. The available removable hardtop comes off in 3 pieces, like T-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. With T-tops removed, at 65 mph it beats you up; but with the top on it feels smooth at 75 and beyond. In the popular two-door Wrangler there's very little storage space behind the rear seat, so four people with four medium backpacks is filled to overflowing. But if it's just you and some stuff, the rear seat can be removed, creating a spacious 61.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Same with the four-door Unlimited, making 87 cubic feet. Wranglers are available with all the electronic trimmings, including a $1035 Media Center with navigation and touch screen, but the screen doesn't work well with the simple rough Jeep; for starters, with the top removed, the screen is erased by the sun. It's a challenge to tune the radio by touch-screen in a bouncing Jeep. Even with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, the Wrangler has to work hard on two-lanes. But a lack of neck-snapping acceleration must be compared to what it had before. And if it weren't an aerodynamic brick, it wouldn't be a Jeep. There are seven boxed crossmembers in the chassis adding strength but weight. The Rubicon with 5-speed automatic weighs an anvil-like 4130 pounds. Riding a Rubicon in Oregon's Tillamook Forest, we tackled a trail that looked impossible for a vehicle off the showroom floor. Later, another Wrangler Rubicon scarcely broke a sweat on rocky trails crossing peaks in Washington's Cascades. Our passenger, a former Wrangler owner, was astonished by the comfort level. The Wrangler is no gas-mileage champ. Running it hard, it averaged 18 mpg for us. It's EPA estimated at 17/21 mpg Wrangler and 16/20 mpg Unlimited. Even the Unlimited four-door, whether hard top or soft top looks like a Jeep. Round headlamps, 7-slot grille, wheel flares, removable doors, bolt-on fenders, fold-down windshield. Meanwhile, the Wrangler Unlimited is the only four-door 4x4 convertible on the market. The soft top slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. The hardtop is $735 option; it comes off in 3 pieces, like T-tops and a sunroof over the rear seat. We spent a summer day on Jeep trails in the Northwest in a Wrangler Rubicon with all three parts removed, and it was fabulous. The body-colored hardtop is new to the Rubicon in 2012. The soft top remains the sportiest in appearance. We think the hard top is better for hunters, fishermen or other outdoorsmen, however, because it provides better security for your outdoor gear in shopping center parking lots against thieves and better security for your food in camp against bears. Can't decide or want both? The Dual Top option allows buyers to get both. Pretty new colors for 2012 are Dozer Yellow (nice blend of Corvette Yellow and Porsche Mustard, and a favorite for pilots in search planes), Deep Molten Red, and Crush Orange (another search party favorite). Our Rubicon was Cosmos Blue, like French Racing Blue, a color that almost brings grace to the ol' Jeep. Standard colors are available for those who want to blend into the environment, whether suburban or bucolic. The Unlimited Sahara, resplendent in rich brown with dark leather, is almost astonishingly smooth and quiet, totally civilized, thanks hugely to the new engine. The 5-speed automatic is well-behaved, and doesn't hunt for gears; it uses the gear it's in. It was designed for use with Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi engine, now refined for the Pentastar, but still Jeep-like industrial strength. A Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon can tow 3500 pounds. The Unlimited corners well, and head sway on weaving roads is light. You can only do so much with a solid axle and tall body. The gas-filled monotube rear shocks have been retuned for 2012 for a better balance between handling and ruggedness, and we like it. The Unlimited gets more out of its 116-inch wheelbase, 10 inches more than a Nissan Xterra. The twitchy handling that lingers in the Wrangler because of its short 95-inch wheelbase is not present in the Wrangler Unlimited. The first pleasant surprise of the Unlimited: it doesn't feel like a Jeep. With 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, it seems like the Wrangler should feel more powerful, and accelerate faster. We ran a lot of high-speed two-lane miles, and our Wrangler had to work, using momentum to pass. We've driven a Chrysler 200 convertible with this same engine, and it seemed faster. Oh well, if it weren't an aerodynamic brick, it wouldn't be a Jeep. After all, there are seven boxed crossmembers in the chassis. The Rubicon with 5-speed automatic weighs an anvil-like 4130 pounds, about 500 pounds more than the Chrysler 200 convertible. Riding a Rubicon in Oregon's Tillamook Forest, we tackled a trail that looked impossible for an unmodified vehicle off the showroom floor. Press a button to disconnect the splined front swaybar, to allow extreme angles of articulation at the wheels. Another button locks both front and rear differential. Slip it into Low Range. You've got a final drive rear-axle ratio of 4.10 in the offroad-oriented Rubicon (3.21 or 3.73 in the Sahara or Sport), and 32-inch tires. Three skid plates protect the fuel tank, transfer case and oil pans. Ground clearance is 10.1 inches at the rear axle and 10.5 inches at the front. In some spots the best technique is to take your feet off the throttle, and just steer. At idle in Low Range, the Rubicon powers up and over obstacles that would totally stop most vehicles; even though torque peaks up at 4800 rpm, it plugs along like a tractor. A new lower first gear for 2012 in the 5-speed automatic transmission gives the Jeep more capability, with a lower overall crawl ratio. Our Rubicon scarcely broke a sweat over rocky trails that would turn back all but the ruggedest and hardest-climbing of vehicles. We ran support for a 50k trail run in the Columbia River Gorge, over two 3500-foot peaks in Washington's Cascades, and it was a hard 12-hour day. 'In my old Jeep, I would have been in misery, dying to get out,' said our navigator. 'But I could ride all day in this Jeep.' On the highway at 70 mph the Wrangler can be a bit twitchy. Hopping out of an Unlimited as we did where the twitchiness is absent, the twitch in the short-wheelbase Wrangler is heightened. But as soon the driver adjusts, the turns and corrections come more smoothly. When the Wrangler is pointed straight and steady, it stays that way. There's a huge difference in how stable the Wrangler feels with the top on and off. With T-tops removed, at 65 mph it beats you up; but with the top on it feels smooth at 75 and beyond. Keep in mind that the Sport, Sahara and Rubicon models have different tires and shock absorbers, and this changes their character significantly. Our Rubicon was great at high speed, either in spite of or because of its heavy-duty tires and shocks. The Wrangler is no gas-mileage champ. Running it hard, it averaged 18 mpg. It's EPA-estimated at 17/21 mpg Wrangler and 16/20 mpg Unlimited, City/Highway. The 6-speed manual transmission, German-made, isn't as friendly as the 5-speed automatic, American-made. To accommodate the new V6, there's a new clutch with long travel at the pedal, sometimes awkwardly long. The throw is way long at the lever, too. However, real men don't drive Jeeps with automatics. We lived in a hardtop Wrangler for a week and it was all good, comfort-wise. With the top off there was a lot of wind buffeting in the back seat, but aside from that the Wrangler 'is more comfortable than my Jetta,' said our passenger, riding shotgun on rocky trails for a day. We also got seat time in a Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, roomy and comfortable, with leather, still every bit a Jeep. Good rear legroom, easy to climb in and out. The rear 60/40 seat folds or can be removed to create 87 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to a Toyota 4Runner. The Pentastar engine block was designed to have accessories bolted to it, to reduce vibration. This clearly pays off with a smooth and silent interior, even at 80 mph in the hardtop Wrangler. The center console was raised to make a better armrest, although now you have to raise your elbow when using the shift lever. Gears in the 5-speed automatic can be changed manually, with side-to-side movement of the lever. There's very little storage space behind the rear seat, so four people with four medium backpacks is filled to overflowing. But if it's just you and some stuff, the rear seat can be removed, creating a spacious 61.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Our Wrangler was equipped with $1035 Media Center option, and if you go offroad or take the top down much, you won't like it. The touch screen is invisible in the sun, and in a bouncing Jeep it's not easy to land your finger where you want it, even trying to tune the radio. A Jeep needs knobs you can grab. And for all the 6.5-inch size of the screen, with some functions only about 40 percent of the screen is used, tiny little radio words, the other 60 percent says JEEP. The navigation system in the Media Center is fairly simple in its display. It didn't make any errors on the routes we programmed, although finding the button to enter destination was maddening. We suggest you skip the Media Center, be satisfied with six speakers in the standard sound system, and get your own GPS for navigation. It's a Jeep-like choice.
