2002 BMW Z3 2.5 VIN: 4USCN33452LK51218 CONVERTIBLE 2.5L L6 PFI DOHC 24V REAR WHEEL DRIVE This Car is in Impeccable Condition In/Out.. Interior is in Like New Despite Mileage It runs perfectly and purrs, and have always been Maintain, and ready to hit any road. One idle you can't barely hear it running. This car is fun to drive, and is a head turner. I am the second owner. The first owner (from what I understand) lived in Santa Rosa, CA. and was a Doctor traveled long miles to Davis, Me being the second owner used only on special occasions or on weekend outings, and this shows on interior and seats. As I mention in initial description. Due to selling had thoroughly checked, found a small oil leak by driver side wheel, it was determined the rack and pinion may go out soon, so we replace that and has with Warranty. Also thermostat was stuck open, this has been replaced. Has a brand new oil change. Brakes are about 5,000 miles new. Had found back tires slightly below wear mark so we replaced back tires has Warranty. Battery is about 7 Months old. Cd/Radio had been replaced approx. 2 years ago, for a All weather Alpine stereo (because of convertible we decide on all weather) After taking it to a BMW dealers to find out why radio indicated CODE for some reason original radio code was not readable, therefore would not work. I have all documentation and receipts on repairs, replacement and care for this vehicle. I have a carfax however ebay will not allow link, but I have a copy of it. Every single thing or item works in this car as indented. I love the heated seats, Maintenance is Key. Here's a good buy for a very good vehicle. Has original Manual in Leather case. Comes with sun/wind screen which is removable if desired. OEM Z3 Floor Carpet Mats... Like everything else in Near new condition. Have a extra key which will open doors, but in order to start vehicle this extra key must be taken down to BMW to be programmed. Absolutely no service lights on, see picture with mileage. Below Mileage is a service bar that lights up from each bar lit means getting close to serving. No bars are lit which means all servicing has been done or maintain. THE CAR I find that anytime I'm speaking to someone about this car, or even any car, one of the first questions that comes up is always "how much horsepower does it make?" After the initial mental face palm, I reluctantly answer. Granted, 443 whp is an absurd amount given stock power was about one third, and most people are rightly amazed by the answer. However, this says little to nothing about the full experience that comes with driving this car. I'd argue its whp is actually its weakest point - so that's saying a hell of a lot. Everything about this car is so finely tuned and so spot on it's just unreal. From a raw performance standpoint, this car is a behemoth. Getting on the throttle (it's drive-by-wire, but honestly feels like drive-by-cable: the Motec does an outstanding job) will often drop you between "dear god I'm going stupidly fast" and "dear god I'm going sideways." The 474 ft-lbs of torque generated by the perfectly sized ball-bearing turbo hits so fiendishly quick and with such little lag that you'll often find yourself literally clenching your butt-cheeks. This is especially true when dropping from 4th to 3rd and flooring it - you WILL be thrown back into your seat, perhaps even through your seat. Couple this with the perfect harmony of the exhaust and jet-like turbo spooling noise and you'll be crying tears of joy knowing your life may have just climaxed. Needless to say, handling on this car is borderline super-car territory. What would you expect from a car with tires wider than Alabama, a suspension stiffer than moonshine, and quite possibly ALL the bracing? The coilovers are undeniably high quality though - they can both provide a stiff suspension while maintaining an excellent level of ride comfort. The difference, however, is that when you take turns or hit bumps, you won't feel like you're on a god damn Pogo stick like you would in most cars. In addition, body roll is non-existent - you'll be flatter than the planet Earth (screw you Christopher Columbus, you're wrong). The sound system can best be described as a mental patient in a strait-jacket. It can show restraint, but if you'd like, it can also be batshit crazy. Are the subs overkill? Probably, but trunk-space is overrated. I actually felt the need to make a dub step mix just to see how many wub wubs this car could deliver into my body before I was vaporized. Something different happened though. I went into this experience hating dubstep, but came out loving it. Clearly, THE SOUND SYSTEM IS SO GOOD IT TURNED TERRIBLE MUSIC INTO GREAT MUSIC. On a more serious note, I'm a bit of an audiophile, and there's no denying someone with a good ear dialed in the components properly. This car can and should be daily driven. Take it to get groceries, drive to the track, do work, then get angry that you forgot about the cold stuff and now it's ruined. Dailying this car is completely viable. The transmission is extremely smooth, and the clutch is only a little heavier than your typical clutch (it's a stage four clutch too: I genuinely wonder what kind of wizards Clutchmasters has working for them). Here's one mention you'll never see in an aftermarket car ad: fuel economy. I've measured this multiple times and got 22-24 mpg mixed. That's seriously impressive, and mildly hilarious, given a stock tC is expected to get 29 at best. Also, turbo. Anyone can throw time and money at a project car, but there's a radical difference between what a shade tree mechanic using no name auto store parts can produce vs. a handful of professional, reputable shops with high quality brand name parts. This car is a shining example of the latter. There were NO corners cut, and this shows. The only major maintenance I incurred was the clutch replacement, and even that was done professionally. Did I mention turbo? This is a complete project with over $60k in parts and even more in labor. You're not buying someone else's nightmare project car that got in over their head, you're buying a professionally built car that has been broken in, stood the test of time and been properly taken care of*. If, like me, you always need to be improving something - you'll be happy to hear there's still meat on the bone. The engine was built to the same spec as Chris Rado's time attack tC, which is run at a whopping 40 psi of boost. 22 psi was the stopping point because the exhaust became too restrictive to make more power - an equal length tubular manifold was required. Please, ask me any questions you may have. There's so much to say about this car, but I'm clearly past the point of rambling. THE STORY I'm the second owner of this car and have owned it for about 4 years. I put 4k miles on it and tracked it twice during the first two years of ownership, but the car has, unfortunately, been sitting since (but is brought to temp and driven briefly every 2 months). My commute to work became too short, and even my weekend driving couldn't justify having insurance on two cars. The first owner was an older gentleman who poured his heart and soul (and wallet) into this car. I had actually known him for a few years prior to buying; He was my go to supplier for aftermarket parts for my other car. I've always known him as a pleasant and honest guy, and of course incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about car modification. His transparency during the deal made our transaction smoother than I could have ever hoped for. One thing was immensely clear when I bought this car from the previous owner: he really wanted to make sure the car was going to a good home. After my experience with it, I genuinely feel the same way. This car is far removed from your typical tuner car - it's a borderline super-car and should be treated as such (except you can actually drive it!). My goal is to make this sale an exact reflection of what I experienced. I don't want the buyer to feel any remorse. Instead, I want you to be excited about your purchase, and all the ideas you have on how to make the car even better. Reason for selling: I've had a lot of fun with this car, but I've reached a point in life where I now have the means to build my own project car like this from scratch. Read: I don't need to sell this car, I want to sell this car. Doing a serious build like this has been a bit of a dream of mine since I converted my first car from NA to turbo. However, don't misinterpret my intentions. If I can't find an excited buyer willing to pay a reasonable amount, I can keep my dream on hold a little longer. I'm still throwing around the idea of taking this car further. THE PROBLEMS Cannot pass emissions A couple of hairline cracks in the fiberglass. You could get these filled - I didn't bother because they are minor and weren't getting any worse. Torque Steer: Not as bad as you'd expect on a ~500 lb-pound torque fwd car. For street driving, I ran 16 psi which almost completely eliminated it while still providing a ridiculous level of acceleration. If you need to reduce torque steer further, it could be drastically reduced by tuning the Motec's built in wheel slip function (you'll have to pay Motec $180 to unlock the feature first). Few cars from the late 20th Century have stirred automobile enthusiasts souls with greater fervor than the venerable BMW 2002 - the first *successful* "Sports Sedan." And after more than forty years, and nearly half a million units produced, enthusiasm remains unabated among faithful owners worldwide. Since its introduction here in the US in 1968 not only have they been capable road cars, but with a few modifications became competent racing and rally cars. Today, due to time, neglect, their numbers have dwindled considerably. Solid, rust-free examples have become scarce. Fortunately, a great number of these remarkable pocket rockets ended up in Northern California where the dryer climate seems to have slowed the oxidation process, if not eliminated it completely. It's not a perfect environment, however. The California sun's UV rays can also take its toll on paint and interior materials, rendering them dull, dry and brittle. Offered up for sale is a two-owner, sunroof 1972, in Verona Red. It is the 2nd to the last year of the coveted "Roundie" (round tail light) models. Because of its tri-spherical E12 head design (runs on regular), inertia reel seat belts and sturdier bumper brackets this final incarnation of "the car that started a cult" is considered one of 'the coveted models' to own. This example has had but two documented owners since purchase here in the San Francisco Bay Area. The blue plate license tags are original issue from the day of purchase and it has always remained here inland - away from the salt spray and *always* garaged. Cosmetically, the paint is 95% original. The exterior surfaces have faded in the California sun from a brilliant, red luster to a shade similar to vermillion - a bit more orange than when it left the Munich factory in 1972. The under-hood areas, door jams and trunk interior all show the richness of the original, untouched factory applied Verona Red. {There is evidence of respray on the R/R corner (near the fuel filler) and on the front apron (under the front bumper)}. The chrome and bright trim are present and in good - but not perfect - condition. There are a few shallow dents here and there that could be smoothed by a visit from the "paint-less dent removal" technician. The grills are the correct (and NLA) "shallow bucket" style and are original to the car. The LF bumper section, bumper guard and bracket are slightly bent, but may be removed and repaired. There is NO body damage to the LF corner. Rust is evident, but minimally, in the spare tire well - a common problem - even in drier climates. The interior is original, including the salt-and-pepper German loop carpets, steering wheel and black vinyl upholstery. There are one or two small cracks in the dash. All gauges function and light up properly. The original door cards are unmolested. There are 6" x 9" speaker holes in the rear deck. The console-mounted radio is a period-correct Blaupunkt Frankfurt AM/FM model with dash-matched control knobs. It is attached to a period-correct Blupunkt "blue-tip" antenna mounted to the A-pillar. The radio lights up, but does not play.( it has been removed to be serviced at a Vintage Audio Technician.) Mechanically, the car has been serviced by the same mechanic on the San Francisco Bay Peninsula for the past nine years, and prior to that, a BMW Independent Specialist in Santa Rosa, California. During that time the engine has been rebuilt and other maintenance performed, including new shocks, steering components, new clutch, brakes, radiator, water pump, radiator serviced, and other services. A Weber carburetor has been fitted for reliability. No smog testing is required for 1972 cars in California. The original 2-barrel Solex is included if desired- which needs rebuilding. The engine compartment is clean, but not pristine. There are no known leaks or imminent problems. The driving experience is right out of the mid-1970s with adequate, but not overwhelming acceleration through all four gears - no clunking or grinding. The steering is light and crisp - easy enough for anyone to drive without struggling against over-sized wheels and tires commonly fitted to older imports. The nose sits high - in part due to the spacers placed between the front struts and the body. There were mandated by the NHTSA in 1973 for bumper-height safety regulations. Most people remove these offensive spacer rings - which returns the ride height to something more flattering. All-in-all this is truly, a fine, Vintage, close-to-all-original-survivor car that has appeared at numerous Bay Area shows and a worthy example of the iconic "Ultimate Driving Machine" that can be driven today - no further restoration required.
