BODYWORK/TRIM Factory Five Racing has long been applauded for their great fiberglass work, and this Cobra is no exception. The car's virtually flawless profile, modeled on two well-known Shelby classics, is a 1-piece, hand-laid Vinylester shell that was laminated to 3/16ths, CNC trimmed and covered in a .015-inch gel coat. That gel lays excellent groundwork for wet looking Metallic Blue 2-stage. Since pretty much every Cobra worth its salt needs some kind of war paint, the builder added a classy pair of Pewter racing stripes. And today, this super slick roadster is a head-turning classic that's ready for the track, the boulevard or the show! Speaking of sophistication, crude detailing is often the downfall of an otherwise excellent build. Not so with this MK4, as every aspect of its design enhances Shelby's innate style and appeal. At the front of the car, polished overriders reflect chrome-trimmed headlights, bullet-style parking lamps and a requisite Shelby emblem. Behind that emblem, a scooped, 1-piece hood flows to chrome-trimmed glass that's seated between polished wipers and Factory Five wind wings. Behind those wings, an accessory hardtop fits well over a polished roll bar. Below that top, aluminum air extractors, a bullet-style racing mirror and small "427" emblems float amid polished side pipes and a familiar LeMans fuel filler. And at the back of the car, chrome-trimmed taillights illuminate a polished oval bumper and two more polished overriders. ENGINE When the original Cobra stormed the scene, team Shelby's mantra was all performance, all the way. And, while many reproductions hit the ground as sedate street cruisers, serious road chops require serious motor. Stroked to a whopping 392 cubic inches, this roadster's serious chops come in the form of a spry Ford Racing small block. The mean mill's energy mixture is supplied by a big Holley carburetor, which is sandwiched between a traditional Cobra air cleaner, a chrome Holley regulator and an aluminum Motorsport intake. That mixture travels in to free breathing aluminum heads, which hang Cobra-branded valve covers and a Ford Racing breather over coated stainless headers. The fires stay lit thanks to MSD 6AL ignition, which jolts a traditional distributor, an MSD Blaster 2 coil and loomed Ford Racing plug wires. "Copper" might've been a bit of a stretch for the sake of catchy alliteration. But it's certainly a fair assessment of a color that PPG technically calls Vibrant Nutmeg. That pigment shines between Pewter racing stripes and a clean fiberglass body that, in the summer of 2015, was completely worked by Cobra expert Bill Jordan. If that name sounds familiar, it's because Jordan appeared on an episode of South Beach Classics. And if this roadster looks 'showroom fresh', it's because the car has logged less than 100 miles since its completion. At the front of its body, a sculpted nose hangs polished quick lifts and requisite mesh grilles between halogen headlights and chrome-trimmed, bullet-style marker lamps. A sculpted hood anchors an integrated scoop in front of chrome latches. Behind that hood, a chrome-trimmed windshield hangs a small mirror between of clear wind wings, polished wipers and dark-tint visors. At the sides of the car, chrome exhaust pipes frame stylish 427 emblems, aluminum air extractors and a familiar, Monza-style fuel filler. That 2-stage was applied at a professional finishing shop as part of a 2-year assembly that wrapped up in late 2005. Since Copperhead Pearl is always best when mixed with something else, the car's slick profile was detailed with Sherman Williams White Pearl stripes. And today, this super slick Cobra is a race-bred street king that's puts a refreshing twist on a timeless American classic. Detailing is crucial on a replica because that's where a lot of cars start to disappoint. Fortunately, you can tell the overall impression of one of these Cobras from about five feet away. At the front of those rails, an Accel Dual Sync distributor utilizes Accel DFI 6A ignition and thick MSD Super Conductor plug wires to sequentially fire eight massive cylinders. Those cylinders combust under Dart Pro1 heads, which hide Chromoly pushrods, ARP bolts and Comp Pro Magnum roller rockers under a polished breather and Ford Racing valve covers. At the sides of those covers, coated Ford Racing headers feed high-flow Factory Five cats and stainless DNA mufflers. At the front of those headers, roller timing components back a billet March accessory drive, which spins a rebuilt alternator at the side of a reverse-rotation water pump. BODYWORK/TRIM From inception, Backdraft cars are turnkey products developed and engineered to mimic the vintage appeal of authentic aluminum Cobras while handily out-performing pretty much anything on the street. The assembly of this roadster's professionally finished body began with a steel-lined GRP molding that was hand-tweaked and gel coated on a full-size rotisserie rack. Once that coating was complete, the newly formed fuselage was smoothed by a seasoned fiberglass professional, baked in an even coat of primer and inspected top-to-bottom to ensure first-class quality. When quality control was cleared, clean PPG white was detailed with Indigo Blue stripes, covered in three layers of ChemSpec clear, baked and cured for three days, and finally, flattened and polished to a head-turning shine. And today, this super slick Cobra is a sophisticated build that exhibits twice the style and twice the race-bred DNA of a typical replicar boulevard cruiser. Detailing is crucial on a replica because that's where a lot of cars start to disappoint. Fortunately, you can tell the overall impression of one of these roadsters from about five feet away. And naturally, since were featuring it, this Cobra hits all the right visuals! At the front of the car, a sculpted and re-angled nose hangs chrome-trimmed Hella headlights over mesh grilles, clear, bullet-style parking lamps and polished quick lifts. A sculpted hood anchors a small, ROUSH-branded scoop in front of locking latches and polished windshield wipers. Behind that hood, a tinted windshield hangs a small Backdraft Racing mirror in front of clear wind wings, dark-tint visors, a polished roll bar and a familiar, Monza-style fuel filler. At the sides of the car, polished and shielded exhaust pipes ride below stylish Ford emblems, finned air extractors and 3M quarter guards. And at the back of the car, chrome-trimmed tail lamps combine with a chrome tag light to illuminate a locking trunk handle and two more polished quick lifts. ENGINE This roadster's signage accurately advertises 427 cubic inches of American muscle. What it fails to convey is: instead of some romantic relic from a bygone era, would-be challengers are facing a fresh Roush Performance 427 R stroker motor that, during its 2010 dyno run, twisted 537 horsepower into 518 lb./ft. of torque! Built from the ground up as your ticket to major acceleration and killer speed, this stout mill is founded on an iron block, a steel crank, a roller cam, H-beam connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons. At the top of the smooth engine, a Roush Cobra Jet-style air cleaner mixes fresh oxygen with 93-octane pump gas that's supplied by braided fluid lines and a large Holley 4-barrel. That carburetor is bolted to an Edelbrock Victor Jr. 351W intake, which rides between aluminum, CNC-ported heads and sequential Roush valve covers. Fire is provided by an MSD Blaster SS coil, which is connected to an MSD Pro-Billet distributor and loomed Roush 9mm plug wires. Cooling comes courtesy of a screened radiator, which circulates water past a large electric puller fan and polished stainless overflow via polished stainless tubes and a coated pump. Ceramic-coated mild steel headers evacuate spent gases into 304 stainless side-pipes. And at the front of the block, a beefy serpentine system spins billet pulleys in front of a polished Powermaster alternator and polished power steering pump. Aesthetically, the hot engine looks right at home in the car's mirror-like bay. And well-planned details, like a chrome breather, a coated fuel pump and a beefy QuickTime bellhousing, are both functional and appealing. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION When it's time to put your hair in the wind, forget about outdated Toploader 4-speeds because this modern-day Cobra blisters the pavement with a fresh Tremec TKO600 5-speed. That world-class transmission delivers power to a 3.46 limited-slip BMW rear end that creates whiplash-inducing acceleration while still allowing the car to loaf along at highway speeds. That drivetrain, which is bolted to a hot-rolled rectangular steel ladder-type chassis, sends power through the same BMW-sourced MacPherson strut front and fully independent rear suspension that's become a Backdraft hallmark. Speaking of details, they're often the downfall of an otherwise excellent build. Not so with this roadster, as every aspect of its design enhances Shelby's innate style and appeal. At the front of the car, familiar bumperettes reflect chrome-trimmed headlights, bullet-style parking lamps and a classy Shelby emblem. Behind that emblem, a scooped hood flows to stainless-trimmed glass that's seated between small wipers, tinted visors and clear wind wings. The beast feeds thanks to a big 4-barrel carburetor that rides between Earl's fluid lines, a Mr. Gasket pressure gauge and a K&N X-Stream air filter. Beneath that carb, an aluminum Edelbrock intake feeds Roush Yates heads, which are sandwiched between aluminum valve covers and wrapped, long-tube headers. At the front of that intake, a Crane distributor sequences fire through thick Champion Power Boost plug wires. Charge for that fire is provided a complete MSD HVC ignition system. Spark for that charge is provided by a small alternator, which, along with a massive water pump, spins on fresh V-belts. Lubrication comes courtesy of Peterson dry-sump components. A heavy duty aluminum radiator makes good use of a giant puller fan and polished overflow tank. There's a complete NOS nitrous system, in case you want to turn 'scary' into 'insane'. And the car's minimalist aluminum engine bay is nice and clean, featuring a painted hood, mirrored inner fenders and pertinent chassis identification. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION One of the best things about buying a high quality replica is the modern hardware underneath. MIG welded, TIG welded and completely powder-coated, this Shelby's Jig-made, ladder-style chassis and independent, BMW-style suspension are fully sorted and ready to hit the toughest track you can find. Behind the engine, a rugged Tremec 5-speed jerks a 4.25-inch Quarter Master Race Clutch, which is fed by a small Tilton fluid reservoir. All that jerking eventually makes its way to a modern rear end that's stuffed with stout, tire-chirping gears. Those gears are countered by power-assisted calipers, which squeeze four drilled and slotted discs. At the front of the car, fluid rack-and-pinion steering makes low speed parking almost as easy as high speed sweeps. Power meets the pavement through attractive Halibrand-style knock-offs, which twist 235/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 295/50R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As. And items like a beefy sway bar, Penske racing shocks, braided fluid lines and a passenger-friendly 92-inch wheelbase round out an already impressive track warrior. INTERIOR Cobra interiors are usually stalwart and simple, but this roadster's Beige leather cockpit is comfortable and appealing. Well-padded seats are firm, look as good as new and feature heavy duty Simpson harnesses for increased safety. Once that coating was complete, the newly formed fuselage was smoothed by a seasoned fiberglass professional, baked in an even coat of primer and inspected top-to-bottom to ensure first-class quality. When quality control was cleared, clean Vapor Metallic PPG was detailed with Olive war paint, covered in three layers of ChemSpec clear, baked and cured for three days, and finally, flattened and polished to a head turning shine. And today, this super slick Cobra is a sophisticated build that exhibits twice the style and twice the race-bred DNA of a typical replicar boulevard cruiser. That world-class transmission delivers power to a 3.46 limited-slip BMW rear end that creates whiplash-inducing acceleration while still allowing the car to loaf along at highway speeds. That drivetrain, which is bolted to a hot-rolled rectangular steel ladder-type chassis, sends power through the same BMW-sourced MacPherson strut front and fully independent rear suspension that's become a Backdraft hallmark. And thanks to that suspension's adjustable front stabilizer bar, fully adjustable rear ride height and BMW power steering system, you're getting a Cobra that has a performance threshold capable of humiliating much more expensive hardware. That monocoque-reinforced foundation makes good use of a Porsche G50/50 5-speed transaxle, which has been reversed, inverted and mounted between a custom driveshaft, a Porsche limited-slip differential and a familiar Centerforce clutch pack. But, as with many cars, this Mustang's northeast christening was only the beginning of its journey, as the next two decades were spent traveling through the dry climates of Arkansas, Texas and Arizona. And at the end of the first muscle car boom, circa 1990, a highly detailed restoration, envisioned by a new sequence of owners, was started but never completed. It wouldn't be until March of 2011 when the car's current owner, an MCA Gold Card judge, would successfully execute a nut and bolt rotisserie rebuild. And that first class rebuild, which stripped and reworked all of the car's panels into a combination of super smooth surfaces and laser straight lines, was constructed of strictly original and NOS pieces. Once those pieces were fully prepped and displayed an excellent level of fit, a correct coat of Ford Candyapple Red basecoat was buried in a thick clearcoat shell. At the sides of that intake, high performance heads, which were cast on February (B) 3rd (3) of 1967 (7), hang attractive Cobra crinkle-finish valve covers between a chrome Ford breather and date-correct exhaust manifolds that wear C7ZE-9431-A left, and C7ZE-9430-A right, casting numbers. Take one look down the sides of the car's rock-solid body and it becomes very obvious that great care was taken to ensure every panel is aligned to better-than-factory standards. Step closer to that body's mirror-like pigment and check out its straight and ripple-free surfaces, which are a product of both clean OEM sheetmetal and high quality replacement parts. Grab the pivotal pieces of that well-adjusted sheetmetal and experience the kind of excellent fit that's right at home reflecting a summertime car show. Then step back to admire one well-done classic that's built to exacting specifications thanks to a great combination of skilled workmanship and first-rate finishing techniques. Shelby's GT line threw fuel on the muscle car fire by not only adding power, but also introducing some of the coolest and most aggressive Mustang design elements ever created. At the front of this coupe, a mesh grille hangs a familiar "SHELBY G.T. 350" emblem between big Ford driving lamps, clear headlights and a bright chrome bumper. At the top of that grille, an original Shelby hood leads the eye to chip-free glass, which is founded in mirrored stainless trim. Behind that glass, correct Shelby quarter scoops ride between small stainless mirrors and a correct, SHELBY-branded decklid. At the sides of that decklid, a straight profile hangs correct Shelby cove scoops between traditional door handles and clean GT350 emblems. And at the back of that profile, correct tail lights and a detailed fuel filler complement a second chrome bumper, bright reverse lamps and beefy stainless exhaust tips. Now that you've waded through all the flowery prose about paint and stainless trim, it's time to get down to business. Lift this Shelby's lightweight hood and you'll find an original, 289 cubic inch small block V8 that displays a correct C5AE-6015E casting number below a February (B) 15th (15), 1967 (7) casting date. Completely rebuilt during the car's extensive restoration, that storied Cobra Hi-Riser twists stout 10.5 to 1 compression into an impressive 306 horsepower! At the top of the rugged Windsor block, a correctly decaled air cleaner jams oxygen into a correct aluminum intake via correct Holley carburetion. At the sides of that intake, high performance heads hang attractive Cobra crinkle-finish valve covers between a chrome Ford breather and stainless Tri-Y headers. The engine's fires are lit by a traditional points distributor, fresh plug wires, Autolite plugs and a familiar Autolite coil. That fire is kept at bay by a correct Extra Cooling Package, which includes new FoMoCo hoses, reproduction tower clamps and a fresh FoMoCo radiator. Pressure for that radiator comes courtesy of new V-belts, which spin a rebuilt water pump between a deep-groove Autolite alternator and correct power steering. And the whole process is kicked into motion by an Autolite-topped battery, which jolts current through snazzy Autolite cables. Aesthetically, this Mustang's exceptionally detailed engine bay appears very close to original, featuring an even combination of Ford Blue and Satin Black paint under correct Ford decals. And everything, from the car's fresh brake booster to its Carter fuel pump, is fully-sorted and virtually spotless. Take one look under this awesome GT350 and you'll find exceptionally clean, expertly detailed floors that are every bit as solid as the car's straight exterior panels. Behind the legendary V8, a 1968 Toploader 4-speed spins a rugged Ford 9-inch. At the front of that drivetrain, straight control arms hang a beefy sway bar and correct power steering between fresh rotors and 4-piston calipers. At the back of that drivetrain, correct leaf springs hang traditional, power-assisted drums at the edges of modern traction bars and a stainless fuel tank. At the center of the car, an aluminized, true-dual exhaust system funnels spent gases through an H-shaped crossover, dual-chamber Flowmasters and slick stainless tips. At the edges of the car, power flows through correct E70-15 Goodyear Speedway 350s, which are wrapped around razor-sharp Shelby 10-spokes. And everything, from this Ford's oxide-primered floors to its correctly marked driveshaft, looks as good as the day it left the factory. Inside this killer pony car's impressive cockpit you'll find a stylish deluxe interior that was completely reconstructed during the car's stellar restoration. Naturally, Shelby focused most of his energy on the performance and exterior appearance of the car; and when those attributes were combined with Ford's already excellent interior, it paid big dividends. The first thing you'll notice is an old school wood-rimmed and satin-trimmed steering wheel that spins around a silver GT350 centerpiece. Above that steering wheel, a great looking dash founds a correct 140 MPH speedometer next to a correct 8,000 RPM tachometer. In front of that dash, plush vinyl buckets, which probably haven't broken double digit hours in seat time, present no evidence of sun damage or rot. Beneath those seats, new black carpet and bright stainless sills center a simple shifter between a chrome fire extinguisher, thick rubber mats and authentic Stewart Warner gauges. Above that carpet, a sturdy black roll bar hangs correct shoulder belts below a fade-free headliner. At the sides of that roll bar, stylish door panels feature excellent stainless trim, spotless chrome handles and fresh silver accents. And behind the passengers, familiar Shelby vents ride above a folding rear seat and correctly restored trunk.
