And when fitted under the Corvette's clamshell hood, it became an ultra-performance world record holder. The ZR-1 was introduced in 1990 as what was supposed to be an economical way to race Porsches and Ferraris. They got the racing part right but fell short on the economical part. The ZR-1 pretty much doubled the price of the corvette adding an astounding $32633 to the sticker while some dealers were actually getting closer to $50000 for the option. The ZR1 option gave the corvette 375 horsepower from the newly designed all aluminum twin overhead cam LT5. This motor was designed by the Lotus CORP and was actually built by the Mercury Marine Company in Stillwater Oklahoma. Final assembly of all ZR-1s was taken care of as usual at the Bowling Green KY plant. In total there were only 6939 ZR-1 corvettes ever made with only 502 being made in 92 with this one being number 76. This all aluminum 350 cubic inch displacement, 32-valve, dual-overhead-cam Lt5 V8 is rated @ 405 hp and 385 ft lbs of torque. It also features a 16-runner intake manifold, 2 fuel injectors per cylinder and 11.0:1 compression ratio. ZR1 Corvettes are 4 inches wider than a standard Corvette. 6 speed manual transmission, selective ride control suspension, stealth radar deflection windshield, massive 315/35/17 tires mounted on 11" wide rims are all standard ZR1 equipment. The sticker price for this vette was $68,743 in 1994. This Corvette has a performance computer chip, 4.10:1 gear and a K&N cold air intake plus filter. These enhancements increase the power output to 430 hp and 400 ft lbs of torque. The 4.10:1 gearing widens the useful power band of the engine by 1000 rpms. The LT5 has a linear power band right up to its 7,200 rpm redline. This ZR1 should run 0 to 60 mph in the 4 second flat range, the ¼ mile in 12.5 seconds or less and top out at 188 mph.
