Some of the things that you may not have known about Buick is that they patented the overhead valve system that almost all cars use even today. And by 1908 Buick nestled into the #1 spot in the production count of automobiles, producing 8800 cars, beating their competitors Ford and Oldsmobile. Buick was always a step up from their competitors producing vehicles a little more luxurious and a little more powerful. Not quite as elite as Cadillac, but Buick held its own. If you couldn’t afford a Cadillac, Buick was next on the list. This 1927 Buick Big 6 Saloon captured it all. There are times when an originating story of who an automobile company started becomes greater than the car itself. In the case of William Durant and the Durant Motor Car company, the story runs equal with the quality of car produced. We’ve seen it many times where the innovators of the automobile industry get sick of making the Big Three rich and want to do things their way. A way they think is better with no government regulations. We’ve heard the story of Tucker and DeLorean, but a story that often gets dismissed is the story of William Durant. He spent his life in the automobile industry and at one point wanted to purchase Ford Motor Co. He’s owned massive amounts of Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac and worked to put those companies on the map. He finally got to the point where he wanted to do it on his own. Back in those days, there were people like that, that had balls the size of grapefruits and taking a risk was as common as coming your hair in the morning. He went to battle in the early 1920’s with the Big Three and Ford and started to build and market cars to the people that had all kinds of income and expectations. There were base cars and expensive cars. Durant wanted to make cars better, safer, more luxurious and more reliable than any other car maker. He became a success but before the Durant Motor Car was household name the crash of 29 hit and the great depression was too much for Durant to persevere through and by early 30’s, the Durant was no longer. The Durant offered here today symbolizes much more than a 1927 automobile….it encompasses what this country claimed to be, where it gave the innovator the chance to build a dream and a legacy. This car and the Willys-Overland name represents a time or an era where our ideas for a new business were always put on paper or a napkin(whatever was available) and discussed over a drink. Then into brick and mortar. Since back in the teens the automobile was still being development and the never ending need for travel was here to stay. It was cars like these that gave us our sense of freedom. Where a Sunday drive was a treat, not a necessity. Every smart engineer or builder were always finding ways to do it better, to make it faster and that’s how companies like the Willys Overland were formed and developed. This 1920 Willys Overland was recently removed out of a collection of cars that housed all these late teens to early 30’s automobiles. This car was restored years ago and still presents great. High nickle 350 bored 60 over, high compression 10.5:1 Keith Black pistons with 76cc domes, the heads are 2.02 1.60 stainless valves, valve springs good to 550 lift, screw in studs and guide plates, titanium retainers, chromo 5/16 push rods, comp cam 305h hydraulic, double roller timing chain from comp cams, it has a cast 1010 Crank and the rods are shot peened with ARP hardware, the oil pump is a melling high volume, the mains are ARP as well, custom built headers, mechanical fuel pump, polished water pump, billet Lokar trans dip stick, dual polished Holley 650cfm carbs, polished Ofenhauser tunnel ram, dual polished velocity stacks, polished oil pan, custom made valve covers. The trans is a built turbo 350 that shifts perfect and never misses a beat. Ford 9" rear end with drum brakes freshly built no issues at all, The front axle is a 30 Model A, The front Grill is a Model A stuffed with the biggest 3 row Aluminum Radiator I could find and it has a 2400CFM fan that blows hard and keeps everything cool. Nothing gets hot. Coolant hoses all new. Original 1930s glass oil can for a coolant overflow tank. Coolant temp gauge is always 175*. Vega steering box with custom built 3/4 twisted metal steering rods. Chrome SoCal steering dampner, headlights, taillights and brake lights work. Custom built boxed in heavy duty frame. The front and rear has a custom Cantilever airbag set up that raises the car 5" off the ground for plenty of clearance and it lays the entire frame on the ground. The rear is 4 linked. This is currently the lowest Rat Rod in Las Vegas! You can raise the front and rear of the car separate so there are two switches, it has the ability to go front, back side to side but I never hooked up the side to side solenoids. The air tank is built into the frame and the air lines run through the frame too. Lots of original wood still in the interior and the side windows still work after 80 years. New diamond stitched leather seat cushions and seat backings. Brand new white wall Bridgestone tires with new tubes. The fuel tank is a old original WWII bomb that we made into a fuel tank, its pretty trick. The body has been chopped, channeled and sectioned. Lots of work into the body alone, hundreds of hours into this car. Pinstripes by Magoo, over 15 hours of pin striping. Ed Roth Ratfink hand painted by Magoo. Mr Magoo is a very close friend to the Roth family, this is a original and rare piece hand painted on my car. Some pictures of the body are oiled and some pics of the body is not oiled, that's why some pictures the car looks different then other pics. I do have a couple different types of velocity stacks and a blower style scoop ill throw in since they all look good on the car. Original 1934 plate comes with the car and I have a original Chicago Igniters car club plaque ($400 value) which I will include.
