If you are looking for a street rod that is unique- a car that will turn heads at any gathering-- this is the car for you. You will not see another like it. Jerry Dittrich is a custom car builder from Colorado. He is still alive and building cars, but this is one of his best efforts. He gained national recognition for building a 1927 Hudson that won best owner constructed car at the 1975 Street Rod Nationals. This car was his next major project. Dittrich liked the looks of the Town Cars of the 1920's and 30"s-- the open driver compartment and the luxurious passenger compartment. We all were attracted to the Munster car crafted by George Barris. The problem then- as now- is that Town cars were rare vehicles and seldom show up on the market....and when they do they are usually too expensive to encourage anyone from thinking of turning them into a street rod. Chrysler did not produce a Town Car in 1926- that offering was not available until the 1927 model year. Dittrich was not deterred. He found a 1926 sedan body and frame in a junk yard and decided to build his own Town Car/ The sedan frame was extended 28 inches- 17 inches added to the sedan body and 11 inches in the hood. The front suspension was removed and replaced with a torsion bar front suspension from a 1973 Chrysler- complete with power steering and front disc brakes. A 340 Mopar engine( 2 barrel) was installed in the car backed by a Torqueflite transmission and Chrysler rear end with drum brakes. The sedan body was dismantled and the wooden framework replaced with oak. The doors were reversed for easier access. Power windows were added along with a power divider window. The rear passenger compartment was refurbished with exotic hardwoods and a console constructed between the jump seats to house a television and stereo. The rear passenger compartment was upholstered in rich burnt orange velour -button tufted- by Mc Falls in Iowa City Iowa. The passenger are is air conditioned and features period bud vases and an antique telephone to summon the driver. Since the car had no drivers compartment, Dittrich fabricated the drivers area from oak and steel based on pictures he found of a 27 Town Car. Dittrich constructed a spectacular hand carved oak dash fitted with digital instruments and a period speedometer. The steering column is a Chrysler tilt/ telescoping unit with a "fat man" swing-away steering wheel, four way flashers and cruise control. For convenience of entry the driver's compartment doors were also reversed. The drivers compartment was upholstered in brown button tufted Naugahyde which was also used for the removable top for the driver's compartment, side curtains and to upholster the running boards and top of the passenger compartment. The car was painted in a tangerine metallic with contrasting chocolate metallic fenders. Bob Butterly applied the fancy lettering and gold pinstriping. Dittrich finished the car in May 1978 and drove the car from Colorado to the Street Rod Nationals in Ohio where it garnered awards for best interior and best dash. After returning to Colorado and attaching a travel trailer, Dittrich drove his family from Colorado to Disneyland. The car was selected as one of the best Street Rods of the 1970's and featured in Rod and Custom magazine. The car was subsequently purchased by the owner of the famed Stanley Hotel (inspiration for Steven King's-- "The Shining") near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park where it hauled guests and enchanted visitors until the hotel went into receivership. When the bank came to retrieve the Chrysler, which had been pledged as collateral, the car was nowhere to be found. The vehicle was ultimately located in a warehouse in Denver. The vehicle ended up in San Diego where I purchased it in 1997. The chrome had deteriorated in the years since it appeared at the Nationals and the paint and body needed refurbishing. The car was transported back to Pennsylvania where it underwent a three year cosmetic restoration geared to restoring the chrome and stripping and repainting the body , replacing the tires and shock absorbers and general maintenance. The car was driven with some frequency following its return to being safe and roadworthy, but it has had little use in the past three years and should go to someone who will drive it and enjoy it as much as I have. The car is being offered for sale locally and the auction may be stopped at any time. The reserve on the car is over the $30,000 bid which I rejected at Mecum's Harrisburg Auction in July-----but not much more.
