And at a quick glance, the 2015 Chrysler 200 certainly looks the part. Its styling is crisply contemporary, as charismatic and eye-catching as anything in the category. From its forward-thrusting nose to the sleek faux-coupe roofline and cleanly understated tail, it has a chic world-car presence that will easily earn its place in the front row at valet parking. The interior, too, is attractively done. Especially in the upper trim levels, the Chrysler 200 has a luxurious look and feel that easily matches its tried-and-true competitors. Available Nappa leather upholstery complements instruments with pleasing refinement, including swank touches such as a Jaguar-like selector knob for engaging the transmission. Imported from Detroit it may be, but we find it hard not to believe these good looks weren't aided by a soft, elegant Italian breeze blowing in from Chrysler's new corporate owner, Fiat. From its distinctive overall shape right down to its quasi-retro Chrysler wing badge brand identifier, the Chrysler 200 embraces an aggressively modern design language new to Chrysler. Its snarky signature LED daytime running lights and hungry grille present an attention-getting face, while its muscular flanks, sleek coupe profile, and full-sized, integrated rear spoiler fairly shout studio-designed. The outward-arching rear spoiler lends the car's tail a wide, well-planted presence, implying confident athleticism. And contributing to the clean appearance, the Chrysler 200 features an extremely shallow bumper offset, effectively integrating the bumpers into the overall shape, though at the price, perhaps, of some cosmetic protection in daily driving. A shiny chrome strip surrounds the side windows, accenting the aero shape's rear-swept dynamism, while its steeply raked side mirrors complete the impression of forward thrust. As all world carmakers begin to eye the giant emerging markets in the Far East, the international design language of the world-car becomes increasingly important to product planning. The 2015 Chrysler 200 is a proudly American car. But this is by no means a traditionally American car but an American-made car with its eye on the world market. Its chassis is closely related to the current Alfa Romeo sedan and the Dodge Dart, but its attractive looks and cutting-edge styling has world-car buyers in its sights. In its styling and presence, it is at least as eye-catching as any of its more entrenched mid-sized competitors. Whether its appearance can make up for its initial lack of market clout remains to be seen, but the designers have done their part. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Chrysler 200 is a great drive. Its steering is firm and accurate, with just the right amount of effort and feedback. The chassis is well controlled, delivering communicative road feel while dampening unruly surfaces. Driven enthusiastically, it has good roll control, remaining pleasingly flat and in command, and all the while, wind and road noise are banished. Chrysler 200's I4 and V6 engines are what we would call adequate, right in the middle of the pack in many respects. They deliver competitive acceleration. Asked why Chrysler had not followed the current trend towards small-displacement/turbocharged engines, company representatives confided that at the time the new 200 was being designed, these two engines were the only choices available. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 184 horsepower at 6250 rpm and 173 pound-feet of torque at 4600 rpm, according to preliminary figures from Chrysler. The engine uses single overhead cam and redline is at 6500 rpm. The 2.4-liter I4 achieves an EPA rating of 23/36 mpg City/Highway. Unleaded Regular gasoline (87 octane) is recommended. The 3.6-liter V6 produces 295 horsepower at 6350 rpm and 262 pound-feet of torque at 4250 rpm. Using double overhead cams (four camshafts) the V6 redlines at 6400 rpm. Fuel economy is an EPA estimated 19/32 mpg City/Highway, and Chrysler recommends Unleaded Regular gasoline. The V6 is offered with an advanced all-wheel drive package. Its rear axle is able to completely disconnect from the drive unit when not needed, reducing parasitic drag and gaining back some fuel economy. The ambitious 9-speed automatic transmission, standard on all Chrysler 200s, is available with paddle shifters. However, we found the paddle shifter delivered slow response times, and sometimes no response at all, even if your downshift was carefully within the correct speed range of the next gear down. It's a characteristic the driver would adjust to, but it wasn't the best of the paddle-shifter we've driven. A long list of available electronic driving aids include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and lane-departure warning, multiple electronic brake assists, park assist and rearview camera Overall, we found the Chrysler 200 offers a European driving experience. It is more disciplined than the purely Italian model, as well-defined as the determined German model. It's a lively, precise car that engages the driver's attention, and that, in turn, heightens everyone's safety. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Chrysler 200's interior makes a superb first impression in the up-level trim versions. Furnished with Nappa leather seating and a two and half foot-wide real wood applique on the instrument cluster, set off with bronzed chrome trim, this is a thoroughly impressive cabin. If you wonder how a Chrysler, in the grandiose old sense, could be competing with Kias and Fords and other purportedly lesser devices (isn't that Dodge's job?), you have reason to be confused. Climbing in behind the leather-wrapped wheel of a well-equipped, elegant Chrysler 200C, yet one that is priced in the low 30Ks, will only add to the confusion. Chrysler is offering high value per dollar to attract new buyers, and at the higher end, the 200 delivers a degree of finesse that deserves careful consideration. The 200's structure has, Chrysler reports, 6-percent greater torsional stiffness than the previous model and uses 60-percent more high-strength steel in the frame. This high-strength steel is of small section sizes, however, avoiding increased weight while still delivering improved strength. In our drives, the structure felt tight and was very quiet, thanks in part to special acoustic sound-deadening carpet. The rear suspension is attached with a special sub-frame, further isolating noise and vibration from the cabin. Instrumentation was complete and handsome. The tachometer read to 7000 rpm but had no redline; the 2.4-liter I4 engine shifted automatically, however, at a peak of about 6200 rpm, the de facto redline. The information panel delivered all the usual data: trip mileage, fuel mileage, fuel economy, driver assistant (diagramming the road ahead), and vehicle information (coolant and transmission temperature, tire pressures, battery voltage, oil life, oil temperature), digital speedometer setting, gear indicator, compass, messages, and audio indicator. Water temperature and fuel level were indicated by bar graphs. Keyless push-button start and passive entry are standard. Steering wheel controls accessed the information panel, phone, and voice activation on the left side; on the right side were adaptive cruise control, including three different interval adjustments. A remote trunk release is mounted on the dash. Two seating pre-set adjustments are provided, as well as an electronic parking brake, standard. Interior space in the front is decent for any but really large drivers. However, with the front seats adjusted for even average drivers, rear-seat legroom is limited. And the sleek faux-coupe roofline has the inevitable penalty of limited rear headroom for tall adults. The optional perforated and ventilated Nappa leather upholstery was beautiful. The seats were a good fit, with fine lateral support when driving aggressively. In the rear, a center elbow rest folds down and provides two convenient cupholders. However, the rather low rear side windows give backseat passengers a slightly claustrophobic view. Materials throughout the cabin were of excellent quality. The switchgear had fine tactile sensation, most of it furnished with rubber knobs and surfaces. In the upper trim levels, the 200 is altogether deluxe. Lower trim levels are less so yet certainly respectable. The audio systems and connectivity were of good quality and straightforward, though pressing bar graphs to adjust audio tone is fussy in a moving car. Cargo space was average, access was narrow by normal standards, and lift-over height was on the high side. The 200 is reborn in 2015, all new from the ground up and offering a compelling blend of simple elegance, state-of-the-art technology and enhanced driving performance. A segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission and available all-wheel drive complete the transformation. The 200 sedan is offered in both front- and all-wheel drive configurations, with four trim levels: front-wheel drive LX, Limited, C and S trims, as well as all-wheel drive C and S trims only. And at a quick glance, the 2015 Chrysler 200 certainly looks the part. Its styling is crisply contemporary, as charismatic and eye-catching as anything in the category. From its forward-thrusting nose to the sleek faux-coupe roofline and cleanly understated tail, it has a chic world-car presence that will easily earn its place in the front row at valet parking. The interior, too, is attractively done. Especially in the upper trim levels, the Chrysler 200 has a luxurious look and feel that easily matches its tried-and-true competitors. Available Nappa leather upholstery complements instruments with pleasing refinement, including swank touches such as a Jaguar-like selector knob for engaging the transmission. The seating is excellent, though not overly roomy in back, and road noise is extremely low. But the key to any car is its road behavior. Here the 2015 Chrysler 200 has real strength. Its well-weighted steering feel and chassis responses are controlled and agile. Not surprisingly, given Chrysler's Fiat ownership, the Chrysler 200 has alert European road feel. Excellent. Imported from Detroit it may be, but we find it hard not to believe these good looks weren't aided by a soft, elegant Italian breeze blowing in from Chrysler's new corporate owner, Fiat. From its distinctive overall shape right down to its quasi-retro Chrysler wing badge brand identifier, the Chrysler 200 embraces an aggressively modern design language new to Chrysler. Its snarky signature LED daytime running lights and hungry grille present an attention-getting face, while its muscular flanks, sleek coupe profile, and full-sized, integrated rear spoiler fairly shout studio-designed. The outward-arching rear spoiler lends the car's tail a wide, well-planted presence, implying confident athleticism. And contributing to the clean appearance, the Chrysler 200 features an extremely shallow bumper offset, effectively integrating the bumpers into the overall shape, though at the price, perhaps, of some cosmetic protection in daily driving. A shiny chrome strip surrounds the side windows, accenting the aero shape's rear-swept dynamism, while its steeply raked side mirrors complete the impression of forward thrust. As all world carmakers begin to eye the giant emerging markets in the Far East, the international design language of the world-car becomes increasingly important to product planning. The 2015 Chrysler 200 is a proudly American car. But this is by no means a traditionally American car but an American-made car with its eye on the world market. Its chassis is closely related to the current Alfa Romeo sedan and the Dodge Dart, but its attractive looks and cutting-edge styling has world-car buyers in its sights. In its styling and presence, it is at least as eye-catching as any of its more entrenched mid-sized competitors. Whether its appearance can make up for its initial lack of market clout remains to be seen, but the designers have done their part. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Chrysler 200 is a great drive. Its steering is firm and accurate, with just the right amount of effort and feedback. The chassis is well controlled, delivering communicative road feel while dampening unruly surfaces. Driven enthusiastically, it has good roll control, remaining pleasingly flat and in command, and all the while, wind and road noise are banished. Chrysler 200's I4 and V6 engines are what we would call adequate, right in the middle of the pack in many respects. They deliver competitive acceleration. Asked why Chrysler had not followed the current trend towards small-displacement/turbocharged engines, company representatives confided that at the time the new 200 was being designed, these two engines were the only choices available. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 184 horsepower at 6250 rpm and 173 pound-feet of torque at 4600 rpm, according to preliminary figures from Chrysler. The engine uses single overhead cam and redline is at 6500 rpm. The 2.4-liter I4 achieves an EPA rating of 23/36 mpg City/Highway. Unleaded Regular gasoline (87 octane) is recommended. The 3.6-liter V6 produces 295 horsepower at 6350 rpm and 262 pound-feet of torque at 4250 rpm. Using double overhead cams (four camshafts) the V6 redlines at 6400 rpm. Fuel economy is an EPA estimated 19/32 mpg City/Highway, and Chrysler recommends Unleaded Regular gasoline. The V6 is offered with an advanced all-wheel drive package. Its rear axle is able to completely disconnect from the drive unit when not needed, reducing parasitic drag and gaining back some fuel economy. The ambitious 9-speed automatic transmission, standard on all Chrysler 200s, is available with paddle shifters. However, we found the paddle shifter delivered slow response times, and sometimes no response at all, even if your downshift was carefully within the correct speed range of the next gear down. It's a characteristic the driver would adjust to, but it wasn't the best of the paddle-shifter we've driven. A long list of available electronic driving aids include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and lane-departure warning, multiple electronic brake assists, park assist and rearview camera Overall, we found the Chrysler 200 offers a European driving experience. It is more disciplined than the purely Italian model, as well-defined as the determined German model. It's a lively, precise car that engages the driver's attention, and that, in turn, heightens everyone's safety. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Chrysler 200's interior makes a superb first impression in the up-level trim versions. Furnished with Nappa leather seating and a two and half foot-wide real wood applique on the instrument cluster, set off with bronzed chrome trim, this is a thoroughly impressive cabin. If you wonder how a Chrysler, in the grandiose old sense, could be competing with Kias and Fords and other purportedly lesser devices (isn't that Dodge's job?), you have reason to be confused. Climbing in behind the leather-wrapped wheel of a well-equipped, elegant Chrysler 200C, yet one that is priced in the low 30Ks, will only add to the confusion. Chrysler is offering high value per dollar to attract new buyers, and at the higher end, the 200 delivers a degree of finesse that deserves careful consideration. The 200's structure has, Chrysler reports, 6-percent greater torsional stiffness than the previous model and uses 60-percent more high-strength steel in the frame. This high-strength steel is of small section sizes, however, avoiding increased weight while still delivering improved strength. In our drives, the structure felt tight and was very quiet, thanks in part to special acoustic sound-deadening carpet. The rear suspension is attached with a special sub-frame, further isolating noise and vibration from the cabin. Instrumentation was complete and handsome. The tachometer read to 7000 rpm but had no redline; the 2.4-liter I4 engine shifted automatically, however, at a peak of about 6200 rpm, the de facto redline. The information panel delivered all the usual data: trip mileage, fuel mileage, fuel economy, driver assistant (diagramming the road ahead), and vehicle information (coolant and transmission temperature, tire pressures, battery voltage, oil life, oil temperature), digital speedometer setting, gear indicator, compass, messages, and audio indicator. Water temperature and fuel level were indicated by bar graphs. Keyless push-button start and passive entry are standard. Steering wheel controls accessed the information panel, phone, and voice activation on the left side; on the right side were adaptive cruise control, including three different interval adjustments. A remote trunk release is mounted on the dash. Two seating pre-set adjustments are provided, as well as an electronic parking brake, standard. Interior space in the front is decent for any but really large drivers. However, with the front seats adjusted for even average drivers, rear-seat legroom is limited. And the sleek faux-coupe roofline has the inevitable penalty of limited rear headroom for tall adults. The optional perforated and ventilated Nappa leather upholstery was beautiful. The seats were a good fit, with fine lateral support when driving aggressively. In the rear, a center elbow rest folds down and provides two convenient cupholders. However, the rather low rear side windows give backseat passengers a slightly claustrophobic view. Materials throughout the cabin were of excellent quality. The switchgear had fine tactile sensation, most of it furnished with rubber knobs and surfaces. In the upper trim levels, the 200 is altogether deluxe. Lower trim levels are less so yet certainly respectable. The audio systems and connectivity were of good quality and straightforward, though pressing bar graphs to adjust audio tone is fussy in a moving car. Cargo space was average, access was narrow by normal standards, and lift-over height was on the high side. Under that high quality pigment, an incredibly straight fuselage hangs solid panels that, with the exception of a thorough massage during their restoration, appear to have led a quiet, drama-free existence. Those massaged panels feature better-than-factory alignment and, when opened and closed, sound solid and function exceptionally well. And that functional body's combination of excellent reflections and Kansas-flat surfaces suggest many labor-intensive hours were spent exacting top-notch finish work. While its basic shape is certainly appealing, first rate detailing is what makes this Chevy really pop. At the front of the truck, a familiar chrome grille rides between a fresh chrome bumper, clean halogen headlights and a shaved hood. Behind that hood, a split windshield leads a 3-window greenhouse that's framed in capped wipers, small, color-keyed mirrors and a flush Center High Mount Stop Lamp. Beneath those mirrors, painted running boards combine with shaved doors to create a simple, attractive profile. At the center of that profile, a custom bed cover lifts to reveal a custom mural and spectacular Oak planks. And at the back of that cover, a smooth tailgate reflects a custom roll pan, polished exhaust tips and flush-fit tail lamps. ENGINE Take a look under the truck's clean hood and you'll find 5.7 liters of LS1 V8 that makes over 300 horsepower! Straight from the factory, the proven mill combines a sturdy aluminum block with lightweight aluminum heads, coil-near-plug ignition and aluminum flat top pistons to create razor-sharp throttle response and a torque band that's as wide as Texas. At the front of the engine, polished serpentine components spin a polished alternator and modern AC compressor at the sides of a polished Street & Performance air cleaner. Once air enters that cleaner, it flows through a polished throttle body to a polished intake, which is bolted down over completely stock internals. High-octane fossils are provided by GM electronic fuel injection. Sparks are sequenced through fresh Taylor plug wires. Spent gases roar through a slick pair of Hooker Super Competition headers. And cooling comes courtesy of a beefy Walker radiator that's fitted with a large SPAL pusher fan. Aesthetically, both the tan mill and its assortment of bright accessories seem right at home inside their smooth, body-matched frame. And details like polished caps, polished rocker covers, polished fluid reservoirs and color-keyed rail covers ensure this Chevy has the looks to match its performance. DRIVETRAIN/TRANSMISSION Judging by appearance, this classic spent most of its blue-collar life living clean and working hard. So, when the time came for rebirth, the truck was a prime candidate for thorough modernization. Nowhere is that theme more evident than under the skin. The dressed LS1 sends power to a 4L60E 4-speed automatic, which spins a color-keyed axle that's fitted with moderate, highway-friendly gears. That smooth drivetrain pushes a Fatman Fabrications frame on a custom 4-link suspension, which sports proven QA1 coil-overs. Tracking is provided by an upgraded front clip, which is fitted with tubular control arms, power rack-and-pinion steering and two more coil-over-shocks. Quick stops are a cinch thanks to power-assisted, 4-wheel disc brakes. At the center of the floor, coated exhaust pipes make good use of coated DynoMax mufflers. And at the corners of the chassis, polished Billet Specialties wheels twist 225/60R17 front, and 235/60R18 rear, Goodyear Assurance radials around custom center caps. INTERIOR When you pop this pickup's doors, you'll find a comfortable cockpit that, thanks to Larry Sneed Hot Rod Interior of Louisville, Kentucky, features stylish Alligator trim. Top dead center, a wrapped dash hangs a locking glovebox and Classic Instruments All American gauges above knobs for Vintage Air climate control. The frame underneath was all-new for 2011 also, with a new fully independent suspension, automatic rear load-leveling, and an available active suspension. A 5.6-liter V8 benefits from 32 valves and double overhead-camshafts with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing and lift to generate 400 horsepower and 413 foot-pounds of torque. The QX56 powertrain also features a 7-speed transmission designed for first-gear acceleration for the 5600-pound truck and its cargo or trailer, while the top two gears are both overdrive for good highway fuel economy. The 7-speed automatic transmission has adaptive shifting to match each driver's driving style, with manual shift override, including a sporty throttle-blip provided on manual downshifts. Four-wheel-drive versions of the QX56 have a selector switch on the console offering automatic, four-wheel-drive high, four-wheel-drive low, low lock, tow mode and snow modes. The auto mode moves engine torque back and forth between front and rear axles up to 100 percent rear, but no higher than 50 percent front. Compared to 2010 and older models, this latest QX56 is 2.1 inches shorter in wheelbase (at 121.1 inches) for sharper handling, and the front and rear tracks are wider. Body width has increased by 1.1 inches, and length by 1.4-inches while overall height has been lowered by a huge 3.2 inches. Yet despite all the body, chassis and interior changes, the 2012 QX56 is about the same weight as the old truck. Like every modern luxury SUV, the 2012 QX56 carries plenty of electronic technology onboard to make driving safer and more enjoyable. A tire pressure inflation indicator system honks the horn and flashes the hazard flashers when correct tire inflation pressure is reached, thus eliminating the fill-and-check, fill-and-check ritual with a tire pressure gauge. This may surprise you if you forget it has this feature the first time you add air at a service station. After such a major overhaul for 2011, changes to the 2012 Infiniti QX56 are modest. Perhaps the most significant change is the new Blind Spot Intervention (BSI) technology, an industry first according to Infiniti, that goes a step beyond Blind Spot Warning systems by using selective braking to steer the 2012 QX56 back into the center of its own lane should the driver stray into the path of a vehicle approaching in an adjacent lane. Other changes for 2012 are confined to the content of various option packages. It looks far cleaner than any previous QX56 body, with a more rounded and unified appearance and fewer things that look added on, like squared-off fender flares and chrome strips. The entire nose has been rounded off and each element integrated into a unified whole that looks better and works better in the wind tunnel and on the showroom floor. The dipped rear roof section on pre-2011 models has been abandoned in favor of a flat roof, the pillars have been blacked out, and the door handles chromed and lined up. Twenty-inch wheels and tires fill the wheel wells, and 22-inchers are optional. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression Underway, the QX56 responds to its 5.6-liter V8 engine. Full-throttle acceleration with two aboard and no cargo is solid if not spectacular, as this engine is tuned for low-end torque, load-hauling and trailer-towing, not high-rpm wailing. It sounds powerful, and it is, but this truck weighs almost 5900 pounds at the curb. The ride is supremely cushy and quiet, but the body's movements over the suspension are well controlled and there is very little body roll or wallow, even in fast corners, owing to the hydraulic body motion control system. The steering ratio and power assist are perfect for a long, tall, heavy vehicle like this one. The brakes are powerful and progressive even when soaking wet (we drove nearly the entire day in a raging thunderstorm). The Intelligent Braking System uses sonar ranging to stop the QX56 all by itself as it approaches another stopped vehicle, which is a bit disconcerting at first, but once you get used to it, it's a nice thing to have in stop-and-go traffic, and it's part of the Technology Package. Extra-thick seats provide exceptional comfort; and the instrument panel, center stack and console are designed to be both user-friendly and to look and feel upscale and luxurious. It seems like the entire cockpit has been built around the 8-inch central screen display, and the center console cascades down from it in a beautiful, organized fashion. The electroluminescent gauges are softly lit, easy to read, and housed in a swoopy escutcheon very much like the one in the new Infiniti M sedan, a piece that adds to the driving pleasure. Huge second-row seats boast the longest legroom measurement in the class at 41 inches, and can be had with optional heaters. A unique feature of the QX56 interior is the remote-controlled second-row flip-fold seats, operated from the key fob, a feature that lets families load from back to front with a minimum of hassle with the seats. The third-row seats also power-fold forward to increase the cargo area, and the third-row seats also recline up to 20 degrees. The Around View monitoring system with front and rear sonar enables the driver to see all the way around the vehicle before moving off, to make sure that there are no people or objects in jeopardy, and that there is room to maneuver. Distantly derived from an excellent Alfa Romeo sedan chassis, this all-new second-generation Chrysler 200 is going toe-to-toe with the best-selling mid-size sedans. Among them: Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu. It better be pretty good, you say. And at a quick glance, the 2015 Chrysler 200 certainly looks the part. Its styling is crisply contemporary, as charismatic and eye-catching as anything in the category. From its forward-thrusting nose to the sleek faux-coupe roofline and cleanly understated tail, it has a chic world-car presence that will easily earn its place in the front row at valet parking. The interior, too, is attractively done. Especially in the upper trim levels, the Chrysler 200 has a luxurious look and feel that easily matches its tried-and-true competitors. Available Nappa leather upholstery complements instruments with pleasing refinement, including swank touches such as a Jaguar-like selector knob for engaging the transmission. The seating is excellent, though not overly roomy in back, and road noise is extremely low. But the key to any car is its road behavior. Here the 2015 Chrysler 200 has real strength. Imported from Detroit it may be, but we find it hard not to believe these good looks weren't aided by a soft, elegant Italian breeze blowing in from Chrysler's new corporate owner, Fiat. From its distinctive overall shape right down to its quasi-retro Chrysler wing badge brand identifier, the Chrysler 200 embraces an aggressively modern design language new to Chrysler. Its snarky signature LED daytime running lights and hungry grille present an attention-getting face, while its muscular flanks, sleek coupe profile, and full-sized, integrated rear spoiler fairly shout studio-designed. The outward-arching rear spoiler lends the car's tail a wide, well-planted presence, implying confident athleticism. And contributing to the clean appearance, the Chrysler 200 features an extremely shallow bumper offset, effectively integrating the bumpers into the overall shape, though at the price, perhaps, of some cosmetic protection in daily driving. A shiny chrome strip surrounds the side windows, accenting the aero shape's rear-swept dynamism, while its steeply raked side mirrors complete the impression of forward thrust. As all world carmakers begin to eye the giant emerging markets in the Far East, the international design language of the world-car becomes increasingly important to product planning. The 2015 Chrysler 200 is a proudly American car. But this is by no means a traditionally American car but an American-made car with its eye on the world market. Its chassis is closely related to the current Alfa Romeo sedan and the Dodge Dart, but its attractive looks and cutting-edge styling has world-car buyers in its sights. In its styling and presence, it is at least as eye-catching as any of its more entrenched mid-sized competitors. Whether its appearance can make up for its initial lack of market clout remains to be seen, but the designers have done their part. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Chrysler 200 is a great drive. Its steering is firm and accurate, with just the right amount of effort and feedback. The chassis is well controlled, delivering communicative road feel while dampening unruly surfaces. Driven enthusiastically, it has good roll control, remaining pleasingly flat and in command, and all the while, wind and road noise are banished. Chrysler 200's I4 and V6 engines are what we would call adequate, right in the middle of the pack in many respects. They deliver competitive acceleration. Asked why Chrysler had not followed the current trend towards small-displacement/turbocharged engines, company representatives confided that at the time the new 200 was being designed, these two engines were the only choices available. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produces 184 horsepower at 6250 rpm and 173 pound-feet of torque at 4600 rpm, according to preliminary figures from Chrysler. The engine uses single overhead cam and redline is at 6500 rpm. The 2.4-liter I4 achieves an EPA rating of 23/36 mpg City/Highway. Unleaded Regular gasoline (87 octane) is recommended. The 3.6-liter V6 produces 295 horsepower at 6350 rpm and 262 pound-feet of torque at 4250 rpm. Using double overhead cams (four camshafts) the V6 redlines at 6400 rpm. Fuel economy is an EPA estimated 19/32 mpg City/Highway, and Chrysler recommends Unleaded Regular gasoline. The V6 is offered with an advanced all-wheel drive package. Its rear axle is able to completely disconnect from the drive unit when not needed, reducing parasitic drag and gaining back some fuel economy. The ambitious 9-speed automatic transmission, standard on all Chrysler 200s, is available with paddle shifters. However, we found the paddle shifter delivered slow response times, and sometimes no response at all, even if your downshift was carefully within the correct speed range of the next gear down. It's a characteristic the driver would adjust to, but it wasn't the best of the paddle-shifter we've driven. A long list of available electronic driving aids include adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and lane-departure warning, multiple electronic brake assists, park assist and rearview camera Overall, we found the Chrysler 200 offers a European driving experience. It is more disciplined than the purely Italian model, as well-defined as the determined German model. It's a lively, precise car that engages the driver's attention, and that, in turn, heightens everyone's safety. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Chrysler 200's interior makes a superb first impression in the up-level trim versions. Furnished with Nappa leather seating and a two and half foot-wide real wood applique on the instrument cluster, set off with bronzed chrome trim, this is a thoroughly impressive cabin. If you wonder how a Chrysler, in the grandiose old sense, could be competing with Kias and Fords and other purportedly lesser devices (isn't that Dodge's job?), you have reason to be confused. Climbing in behind the leather-wrapped wheel of a well-equipped, elegant Chrysler 200C, yet one that is priced in the low 30Ks, will only add to the confusion. Chrysler is offering high value per dollar to attract new buyers, and at the higher end, the 200 delivers a degree of finesse that deserves careful consideration. The 200's structure has, Chrysler reports, 6-percent greater torsional stiffness than the previous model and uses 60-percent more high-strength steel in the frame. This high-strength steel is of small section sizes, however, avoiding increased weight while still delivering improved strength. In our drives, the structure felt tight and was very quiet, thanks in part to special acoustic sound-deadening carpet. The rear suspension is attached with a special sub-frame, further isolating noise and vibration from the cabin. Instrumentation was complete and handsome. The tachometer read to 7000 rpm but had no redline; the 2.4-liter I4 engine shifted automatically, however, at a peak of about 6200 rpm, the de facto redline. The information panel delivered all the usual data: trip mileage, fuel mileage, fuel economy, driver assistant (diagramming the road ahead), and vehicle information (coolant and transmission temperature, tire pressures, battery voltage, oil life, oil temperature), digital speedometer setting, gear indicator, compass, messages, and audio indicator. Water temperature and fuel level were indicated by bar graphs. Keyless push-button start and passive entry are standard. Steering wheel controls accessed the information panel, phone, and voice activation on the left side; on the right side were adaptive cruise control, including three different interval adjustments. A remote trunk release is mounted on the dash. Two seating pre-set adjustments are provided, as well as an electronic parking brake, standard. Interior space in the front is decent for any but really large drivers. However, with the front seats adjusted for even average drivers, rear-seat legroom is limited. And the sleek faux-coupe roofline has the inevitable penalty of limited rear headroom for tall adults. The optional perforated and ventilated Nappa leather upholstery was beautiful. The seats were a good fit, with fine lateral support when driving aggressively. In the rear, a center elbow rest folds down and provides two convenient cupholders. However, the rather low rear side windows give backseat passengers a slightly claustrophobic view. Materials throughout the cabin were of excellent quality. The switchgear had fine tactile sensation, most of it furnished with rubber knobs and surfaces. In the upper trim levels, the 200 is altogether deluxe. Lower trim levels are less so yet certainly respectable. The audio systems and connectivity were of good quality and straightforward, though pressing bar graphs to adjust audio tone is fussy in a moving car. Cargo space was average, access was narrow by normal standards, and lift-over height was on the high side. BODYWORK/TRIM Sealed in Subaru's sophisticated Sunlight Gold Opal, this slick Chevrolet is the beneficiary of an extensive, ground-up restoration that was conducted by Street Metal Fabrication of Greenville, South Carolina. In addition to better-than-factory alignment, the car's body features super sinuous appeal thanks to fully shaved emblems. That body's combination of form, fit and flash is reinforced by high-gloss clear, which, during the finishing phase, was sanded to a mirror-like shine. And that world-class look is completed by custom striping that our production team likes to call "bray"; a pigment that displays a small hint of brown while maintaining just the right amount of gray to complement the car's custom leather interior. The greatest thing about building a massaged fifth generation Bel Air is: the subdued look most street rod enthusiasts strive for is pretty much standard factory fare. At the front of this fully sorted full-size, a shaved and chromed grille rides between chromed headlight buckets, modern H4 torches and a modified bumper. Above that grille, a factory hood leads the eye to a custom cowl that trades factory windshield wipers for functional breathing. Behind that hood, straight stainless trim shapes curved greenhouse glass. Below that trim, chrome side spears ride between shaved mirrors and traditional GM door handles. And at the back of those spears, modified taillights illuminate a custom, 1-piece bumper that's been professionally tucked and smoothed. ENGINE Hoist this Chevy's sculpted hood and you'll find a positively massive V8 that's been skillfully wedged in a custom Sunlight Gold Opal engine compartment. Carefully assembled and professionally detailed, that brutal stoplight slayer utilizes a stroker crank, a flat tappet cam and Dart Engineering casing to transform 598 cubic inches of red hot combustion into 10 to 1 compression and 800 horsepower! A perfect amount of oxygen flows from a custom-fabricated cowl induction system to an 850cfm Quick Fuel Technology carburetor. That wind mixes with fuel in a coated intake and progresses to aluminum Pro-Filer heads that are built with flat tappet lifters and tough roller rocker arms. Immediately following combustion, which is sourced via an aftermarket distributor and familiar Taylor plug wires, spent gases roar through custom-fabricated headers. Charge comes courtesy of a satin-finished alternator that, like the car's satin AC compressor, spins on a high quality Vintage Air accessory drive. Cooling is provided by a big Griffin radiator that's backed by Flex-a-Lite puller fans and a proven Stewart water pump. And items like billet hood hinges, fabricated valve covers, a satin-finished fuel pump and trick dipsticks enhance subdued and classy aesthetics. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION We've said it time and time again, and the old adage still proves true. A pro-tourer simply isn't an authentic pro-tourer unless its significant power enhancements are augmented by significant chassis hardware. That's the only way 100% of the car's performance potential will ever be realized. This Bel Air's spry big block is, first and foremost, augmented by a custom-fabricated perimeter chassis that replaces GM's venerable X-frame. At the center of that chassis, a fresh Tremec 5-speed makes good use of a hydraulic clutch. When that clutch grabs, a fresh driveshaft twists a narrowed Moser rear end, which seats an Eaton posi-traction differential between RideTech coil-over-shocks. Turns come courtesy of modern power steering, which seats an AGR gearbox between Bilstein coil-over-shocks. Smooth and solid stops are provided by multi-piston Wilwood calipers, which squeeze four drilled and slotted rotors. Spent gases flow in to custom pipes and throaty Flowmaster mufflers. Power meets the pavement through polished Schott wheels, which spin 225/45R19 Goodyear Eagle RS-As in front of 275/45R20 Goodyear Eagle GTIIs. And everything from this Chevy's custom oil pan to its Sunlight Gold Opal floors is expertly finished, superbly detailed and ready for action. INTERIOR Behind the car's lightweight doors, it's all Paul Atkins. Custom leather seats, which wear metallic piping over polished buttons, are configured in a typical bench and bucket layout. From the driver's perch, a Paul Atkins dash hangs an impressive array of Classic Instruments All American gauges above billet foot pedals, pushbutton ignition and Vintage Air climate control.
