A modernized successor to the storied M273 V8, the M278 is founded on an aluminum block that's built with a 98mm bore, a 90.5mm stroke and Silitec low-friction cylinder liners. That machining technology is supplemented with increased pressure Direct Injection, multi-spark ignition technology, enhanced Variable Valve Timing and revised engine accessories that reduce parasitic loads. As is the trend these days, the entire engine is covered in clean plastic shrouds, which, in this sedan, appear 100% weather-free. That shrouding prominently features the name of the AMG professional who assembled the mill. And, engineered, assembled, covered and installed, the impressive powerplant hustles this relatively heavy sedan to 60 MPH in a spectacular 3.9 seconds.
