And if you're a Firebird enthusiast who's searching for an exclusive F2 that you can literally purchase and haul straight to the show, it's your chance to become king of the muscle car hill! BODYWORK/TRIM Sold new at Mall Pontiac in Dayton, Ohio, and claiming a mere 15,401 original miles, this restoration-fresh Trans Am is simply spectacular. With a 3-owner body that seems to have been fairly straight when the restoration began, it should come as no surprise that panel gaps are excellent and fit feels rock-solid. By the looks of that body's smooth finish, Super Duty expert Steve Schappaugh probably spent weeks blocking and sanding every one of its panel in hopes of forming a laser-straight showpiece. And once those panels' correct coat of Cameo White two-stage was decorated with standard Trans Am call-outs, he definitely accomplished that goal. Today, with unique visual sizzle that's as classy as it is aggressive, this top notch Super Duty is a highly desirable example of a major milestone in Pontiac history! 1974 was a defining year for the Firebird. Sales were brisk and new 'low speed' crash mandates required that the car either be completely redesigned or jump on the bandwagon of hideous and hastily done nose jobs that were creeping into every automaker's showroom. Instead of bowing to cost, Pontiac assembled a talented engineering staff, which managed to blend both functionality and style into the well-integrated profile you see here. At the front of that profile, a 'black bar' nose hangs a standard screamin' chicken emblem between clean headlights, clear parking lamps, familiar Pontiac grilles and a road-hugging spoiler. At the top of that nose, a screamin' chicken hood centers an "SD-455" branded shaker in front of pristine greenhouse glass that's framed in bright stainless trim. At the sides of that hood, conservative door handles and small sport mirrors reflect traditional fender vents and correct fender flares. And at the back of the car, a subtle spoiler highlights clean taillights, chrome exhaust tips and a second 'black bar' bumper. ENGINE The heart of any muscle car is its engine, and this Poncho's brawny Super Duty moniker is no misnomer. The largely hand-built SD-455, which features significantly reinforced components, shares little more than a displacement number with its more common brethren. And this car's highly detailed mill, balanced, blueprinted and completely rebuilt in June of 2015 by Ken Maisano Race Engines, complements a correct 490132 casting number with a January (A) 09th (09), 1974 (4) casting date, correct "W8" assembly stamp and matching partial VIN. At the top of the big engine, traditional Trans Am induction funnels fresh wind into a big Rochester carburetor and correct Pontiac intake. That intake sends a high-octane air/fuel mixture into unique, high-flow cylinder heads that are equipped with familiar, stamped steel valve covers. And those heads utilize a roster of high performance internals to create rocket-like acceleration. That acceleration is sparked by a traditional points distributor, which sequences fire through fresh Packard TV R Suppression cables. Spent gases are handled by fully restored exhaust manifolds, which roar into correct, true-dual tail pipes. And heat from that combustion is controlled by a leak-free radiator, which services fresh hoses via new tower clamps and a familiar plastic shroud. Aesthetically, this Trans Am's first class engine bay is 100% ready for show. The mighty mill displays a slick coat of correct Pontiac Turquoise all the way from its intake to its oil pan. The car's fenders, firewall and hood are covered in a smooth layer of GM Satin Black. And niceties such as new decals, new stamps, a Delco battery and a fresh Delco Moraine brake booster can be found in all the right places. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION At the bottom of this slick, second generation Firebird, solid floorpans reflect years of easy living. Behind the mega mill, a correct Borg Warner T10 4-speed hangs a familiar 1304065903 casting number below a correct partial VIN. That transmission, fully rebuilt in April of 2015 by Westminster, California's Westminster Transmission, sends power to a sturdy 10-bolt rear end. Below that stellar drivetrain, a rebuilt Trans Am suspension, which includes correct power steering, thicker sway bars, better shocks and stiffer springs, combines with standard issue power front disc and rear drum brakes. And at the center of the car, a Gardner true-dual exhaust system barks out a deep, vintage roar. All this road ready hardware rolls on an attractive set of Pontiac Rally IIs, which spin GR70x15 Goodyear Steegard Radials. And everything under this killer classic is restored, clean and ready to roll. INTERIOR When it comes to interior dcor, Pontiac's 70s team was firing on all eight cylinders. While this coupe's insignia may be considered overkill, and its horsepower rating might seem relatively modest compared to earlier muscle cars, there's no disputing the beauty of its design. The rebuilt custom bucket seats are supple, firm, and look every bit as nice and rich as their name implies. Below those seats, like-new carpet is protected by color-keyed floor mats. But this exclusive, national award-winning Chevy is just that, and, throughout 56 years of immaculate upkeep, heavy servicing has been its sole alteration. If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind, virtually unmolested collector car, here's your chance to head the herd! HISTORY/PRESERVATION Introduced as Chevrolet's first foray upmarket, the Impala proved GM's volume car juggernaut had the strength to be all things to all people. It was the ride your upper class neighbors enjoyed and, like the original Bel Air, it wholly embodied the time of its creation. With that in mind, this awesome, second generation drop-top was immediately snatched up by its first owner in late 1958. That owner, Foster Harris of Dayton, Ohio, purchased the car from Williamstown, Kentucky's Piles Chevrolet as a gift for his wife. Unfortunately Mr. Harris' wife was more interested in birds than antelopes and, after 3K miles of use, the Impala was traded on a brand new Thunderbird. That's when the Chevy's second and long-term owner, Francis Mendenhall, entered the picture. Mr. Mendenhall and his wife fell in love with the car, mainly using it as a grand Sunday cruiser that provided their family years of great memories. As those years passed, the Mendenhall's daughter, Joyce, formed quite a bond with the low-mileage Chevy and would eventually use it to complete her driving test. When the time came for Joyce to head to college, the Impala returned to its plaster garage where her dad promised to store and maintain it until further notice. After college, Joyce married a future GM manager who was a hardcore Chevy fan and long-term Bel Air owner. And, in 1984, Joyce's father called to say: "it's time for you to pick up your Impala." Ecstatic, she relocated the car to her new home and started hitting the national show circuit where, as you might imagine, the all-original, 21K mile drop-top was a big hit. In 2006, after roughly half a century in the same family, Joyce and her husband finally passed the car to its third and present owner: a retired neighbor who also purchased their beloved Bel Air. That owner, looking to keep things fresh, commissioned a heavy engine servicing that included new seals, new freeze plugs and fresh block paint. And today, the car rolls as a fully documented national award winner that's seen only 28,910 miles of road time in the hands of three dedicated owners. ENGINE Lift this Chevy's long hood and you'll find an original, 348 cubic inch Turbo Thrust V8 that's branded with a correct 3755011 casting number, stated with a September (I) 19th (19), 1958 (58) casting date and detailed with a correct "G" suffix stamp. A staple of working-class luxury, this sturdy 250 horsepower big block is one of the many reasons the Impala model enjoys fantastic name recognition. And absolutely every item, from its thick coat of Chevy Orange paint to its unique, bowtie-branded valve covers, is functional, reliable and ready to hit the cruise-in. At the top of the bright block, a Satin Black, single-snorkel air cleaner funnels wind in to a big Rochester carburetor. At the sides of the block, clean exhaust manifolds allow oversquare cylinders ample breathing room by pushing spent gases through correct, true-dual pipes. At the back of the block, a traditional points distributor sparks familiar Packard TV R Suppression cables. Cooling is provided by a beefy Harrison radiator, which circulates water through a series of pliable hoses. Charge comes courtesy of a Delco yellow cap battery, which jolts a tagged Delco-Remy generator. All the right details, including a stainless fuel line, correct decals and a factory brake booster, are present and accounted for. And the car's Satin Black engine bay serves as an ideal backdrop for the engine's many different textures. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Park this topless full-size on a lift and you'll find a solid undercarriage that, despite the car's Midwest roots, appears to have never seen seriously inclement weather. Straight, undercoated floorpans perfectly complement a sturdy, Satin Black X-frame. A rugged Powerglide transmission, which hangs a correct 3742349 casting number above an October (J) 31st (31) 1958 (8) casting date, spins a beefy GM drop-out that literally sails the engine through its power band. Under that capable drivetrain, a lucid suspension mixes factory power steering with big, power-assisted drums. At the center of the floors, a true-dual exhaust system utilizes correct turbo mufflers to weave an aggressive, full-throttle rumble into a subdued and classy idle. And at the corners of the chassis, great looking 8.00-14 BF Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls frame dent-free hubcaps. INTERIOR For GM products of the 1950s, interiors are always a highlight. Naturally, this Impala continues that trend with an eye-popping tri-tone Green interior that presents very well. At ground level, Fisher sill plates anchor old school carpet under thick, color-keyed floor mats. Adjustable bench seats wear retro plaid covers that remind us of family picnics. The padded and stainless-trimmed dash plays host to factory instrumentation, a correct radio and chrome accessory pulls. In front of the driver, a traditional Impala steering wheel spins speed-drilled spokes around a storied cross-flag emblem. At the sides of the car, expressive door panels found simple exit handles between jet-age armrests and traditional window cranks. Sold new at Mall Pontiac in Dayton, Ohio, and claiming a mere 15,250 original miles, this restoration-fresh Trans Am is simply spectacular. At the front of that profile, a 'black bar' nose hangs a standard screamin' chicken emblem between clean headlights, clear parking lamps, familiar Pontiac grilles and a road-hugging spoiler. At the top of that nose, a screamin' chicken hood centers an "SD-455" branded shaker in front of pristine greenhouse glass that's framed in bright stainless trim. At the sides of that hood, conservative door handles and small sport mirrors reflect traditional fender vents and correct fender flares. And at the back of the car, a subtle spoiler highlights clean tail lights, chrome exhaust tips and a second 'black bar' bumper. The heart of any muscle car is its engine, and this Poncho's brawny Super Duty moniker is no misnomer. These largely hand-built monsters, which feature significantly reinforced components, share little more than a displacement number with their more common brethren. And this car's highly detailed SD-455, which hangs a correct 490132 casting number and January (A) 09th (09), 1974 (4) casting date behind a correct "W8" engine stamp and matching partial VIN, has been completely rebuilt to its original glory. At the top of the big engine, traditional Trans Am induction funnels fresh wind into a big Rochester carburetor and correct Pontiac intake. That intake sends a high octane air/fuel mixture into unique, high-flow cylinder heads that are equipped with familiar, stamped steel valve covers. And those heads utilize a roster of high performance internals to create rocket-like acceleration. That acceleration is sparked by a traditional points distributor, which sequences fire through fresh Packard TV R Suppression cables. Spent gases are handled by fully restored exhaust manifolds, which roar into correct, true-dual tail pipes. And heat from that combustion is controlled by a leak-free radiator, which services fresh hoses via new tower clamps and a familiar plastic shroud. Aesthetically, this Trans Am's first class engine bay is 100% ready for show. The mighty mill displays a slick coat of correct Pontiac Turquoise all the way from its intake to its oil pan. The car's fenders, firewall and hood are covered in a smooth layer of GM Satin Black. And niceties such as new decals, new stamps, a Delco battery and a fresh Delco Moraine brake booster can be found in all the right places. At the bottom of this slick, second generation Firebird, solid floorpans reflect years of easy living. Behind the mega mill, a correct Borg Warner T10 4-speed, which hangs its typical 1304065903 casting number below a correct partial VIN, sends power to a sturdy 10-bolt rear end. Below that stellar drivetrain, a rebuilt Trans Am suspension, which includes correct power steering, thicker sway bars, better shocks and stiffer springs, combines with standard issue power front disc and rear drum brakes. And at the center of the car, a Gardner true-dual exhaust system barks out a deep, vintage roar. All this road ready hardware rolls on an attractive set of Pontiac Rally II wheels, which spin correct, but weathered, GR70x15 Uniroyal Steel Belted Radials. And everything under this killer classic is restored, clean and ready to roll. When it comes to interior dcor, Pontiac's 70s team was firing on all eight cylinders. While this coupe's insignia may be considered overkill, and its horsepower rating might seem relatively modest compared to earlier muscle cars, there's no disputing the beauty of its design. The rebuilt custom bucket seats are supple, firm, and look every bit as nice and rich as their name implies. Below those seats, like-new carpet is protected by color-keyed floor mats. And between those seats, a molded console props an enclosed storage bin behind a chrome Hurst shifter and correct Delco radio. At the top of the car, a stain-free headliner stretches tightly between fresh shoulder belts. At the sides of the car, hard to find door panels hang pristine chrome handles between chrome window cranks and full armrests. That intake sends a high octane air/fuel mixture into unique, high-flow cylinder heads that are equipped with familiar, stamped steel valve covers. And those heads utilize a roster of high performance internals to create rocket-like acceleration. That acceleration is sparked by a traditional points distributor, which sequences fire through fresh Packard TV R Suppression cables. Spent gases are handled by fully restored exhaust manifolds, which roar into correct, true-dual tail pipes. And heat from that combustion is controlled by a leak-free radiator, which services fresh hoses via new tower clamps and a familiar plastic shroud. At the sides of that intake, authentic 'double hump' heads hang bright chrome valve covers over fully restored exhaust manifolds. And at the back of those heads, a mandatory points distributor shoots spark through correct Packard TV R Suppression cables. When fired, the infamous V8 snarls and barks like a real competition piece. Its ancillary components are top-notch in every way, with fresh GM hoses, a correct brake booster and a reproduction Delco battery accompanying rare, factory-correct smog equipment. And an even combination of Chevy Orange engine skin and Satin Black fender framing is accented by clean and appropriate decals.
