I had one of these for my own use and sold it after many miles of reliable operation. This one is local to Birmingham and has been treated to many service items by our local dealer. Yet ANOTHER Clean Alabama Ride! This vehicle is riding on a good set Michelin® tires! Service and Inspection Report: We brought this vehicle in for service and really didn’t find anything in need of attention. It is obvious that the prior owner serviced what needed attention right down to a new drive belt and drive belt tensioner hardware. The oil looked relatively clean as did the remainder of the fluid items. Even the wiper blade has the Mercedes emblem so we deferred making any changes. The battery tested a bit low so we did install a new Mercedes battery for you. Shop around and then ADD IT UP! Why buy one that needs work? How much will that cost you in addition to the car itself? Verified by its original data card (included), the car is finished in factory correct Black (DB 040) over red leather, arguably the most appealing livery ever offered on a W121. The car left the factory as a two-tone car with a White (DB 050) hard top and hub caps, and while we still have the original White hard top, we also happen to have a correct Black “big window” hardtop as well, which we prefer. The buyer will have their choice of tops to accompany the sale. As “preservation class” vintage cars hadn’t yet been given the credence that they’ve come to enjoy (both in terms of recognition and valuation) the Mitchell’s made the choice to refinish the car in its factory correct black paint at some point during their tenure, which is the finish the car still wears today. In February of 1984, the car was sold with 115k miles on the odometer to its third and most recent owner, Dr. William Lell, also of Birmingham. Like the Mitchells, Dr. Lell always kept the car properly serviced and garaged, using it as a cherished weekend driver – in 31 years of ownership he accrued a mere 7k additional miles. Upon acquiring the car he had the seats reupholstered in correct red leather and a new correct canvas soft top installed, both at Bud’s Benz in Douglasville, GA. Throughout his ownership, the car has consistent maintenance, evidenced by a thick stack of service receipts from local marque experts. It should come as no surprise then that the car is in fantastic shape mechanically. The original, numbers matching engine starts effortlessly, idles smoothly and consistently and pulls strongly through each of the original transmission’s gears. The car drives and brakes straight and true, the suspension is tight and the car is a joy to drive, whether tooling through town, winding through the canyons or bombing down the highway. The car is ideal for both top-down weekend cruises to local shows and more strenuous touring events. It needs nothing to be enjoyed save for an appreciative new owner. As the pictures show, the finish applied in 1984 has held up quite well and the car remains absolutely gorgeous. While having a number of minor imperfections (each insignificant enough to not appear in the pictures), the factory correct Black finish is deep and lustrous, perfectly offset by the lascivious red interior. The seats themselves appear almost new, the carpets are in good shape and the car retains its immaculate, uncracked original steering wheel and fully functioning Becker radio. The glass and chrome are in excellent original condition and while the car’s soft top shows some limited wear the rear window is clear and it remains entirely serviceable. Perhaps most notably, as the recipient of proper care and storage, the frame and undercarriage are entirely solid and original, showing no evidence of harmful rust or repairs. A condition mirrored in the trunk and engine compartment, it tells the story of a remarkably untouched, extremely original example that has always lived a charmed life. As meticulous an owner as you’ll find, Dr. Lell comprehensively documented his 31 year ownership of the car including the aforementioned thick stack of service receipts, all of the sales documents from his acquisition of the car, an appraisal from just prior (describing the car as being in “exceptionally good condition”) and a range of technical data for the car. The car is also remarkably complete in terms of original tools, retaining its rare (and expensive to replace) original tool kit, spare tire and changing tools. The car also comes with its original data card, all of its original books and manuals and even the original packing slip from June of 1961. Finally, as mentioned above, the car will also come with either its original White big window hard top or a correct black big window hardtop as seen in the pictures. This is a truly uncommon opportunity to acquire an extremely original, entirely numbers matching and correct, well documented, extremely honest and beautifully presented 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL. Considering its condition, provenance, documentation and correctness, it would be incredibly difficult to find a similarly stellar original example. This is a 1969 Factory built 442. The car underwent a full frame off restoration from 2005-2006. The car was stripped to metal and painted in DuPont original color Crimson Red. There were several coats of clear coat applied and it looks great today as you see in the pictures. The interior original and shows the care the car has had over the years. The top is new including rear glass and is in the original factory color of black - it works as it should. During the restoration the Hydramatic Transmission was rebuilt and shifts are smooth and hard to detect. The block on the motor was replaced. There are 14880 miles since the restoration. The car has been garage kept. $7500 of receipts from 2011-2015 will accompany the car and include brakes, tires at 85-90%, complete brakes, ac compressor and belts - blows cold at 95 degrees, new steering wheel (original comes with the car). NOTE: The stereo is an upgrade Kenwood and sounds great - OEM GM Radios can be found on eBay for $60-$90. All lights and signals work except for the light in the center console. The rear wing was not original factory equipment but was dealer installed - there is a hairline crack that does not show up in pictures. New front windshield and all glass is clear. New left and right mirrors as well as door handles. Power Steering and Brakes. Compression is good on all cylinders and the car has no smoke or leaks - acceleration is instant and you will smoke tires if you are heavy on the gas. At 70 MPH it tracks straight - more importantly it stops straight as an arrow - the brakes are dialed in. The car is sorted out, it starts without issue the first time, sounds great, drives great. But, given its history, it seems the car was always destined for a touch of greatness. Built in November of 1969 at Leeds Assembly in Kansas City, Kansas, this exclusive drop-top was shipped directly to Berger Chevrolet where it likely became the primary transportation of Vivian Berger, Dale Berger Sr.'s wife. Over the next three decades, the car served four additional owners as a well-preserved survivor. Then, circa 2002, its sixth and most recent owner orchestrated a 3-year, rotisserie restoration that logged roughly 2,400 hours of labor. Laser-straight bodywork, perfected by Piedmont, South Carolina's Chuck Miller's Restorations, wrapped a new hood, new fenders, new quarters and new trunk drops in a correct layer of Tuxedo Black 2-stage. That glossy pigment hangs new stainless and fresh chrome around a nostalgic Berger emblem and clean Super Sport ornamentation. And everything rides under correct Black vinyl that, because of the restorers' obsession with quality, was the third top installed during the car's detailed overhaul. ENGINE Toss this classic's hood and you'll find an original, 396 cubic inch big block that was bored .030 over and fully rebuilt by the professionals at Ewing Automotive Machine in Snellville, Georgia. At the top of the Chevy Orange mill, a chrome, correctly decaled air cleaner forces oxygen in to a correct Quadrajet carburetor that was restored by Kunz Automotive of St. Louis, Missouri. That carb rides on a factory intake, which feeds factory heads that hang over a GM-spec cam and GM-spec valves. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor sequences fire through Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, chrome valve covers reflect correct exhaust manifolds. And at the front of the block, GM hoses channel water past an original alternator and correct Frigidaire AC compressor with the help of a beefy radiator and familiar tower clamps. Everything, from the car's original starter and correct Delco battery all the way to its Harrison firewall components and Delco Moraine brake booster, adds a feeling of authenticity to the painted and decaled engine bay. And, as expected, a correct 3969854 casting number, a correct "CTW" assembly stamp and a matching partial VIN authenticate the powerplant's legendary status. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Naturally, this Chevy's road-ready chassis has been restored to the same high standards as the aforementioned body panels and engine compartment. Behind the stout big block, an original Turbo-Hydramatic 400 hangs a correct "70-CF" assembly tag opposite a matching partial VIN. That tough gearbox, rebuilt by Snellville, Georgia's Neal Racing Transmissions, twists power to a correct 12-bolt axle. Holding that killer drivetrain off the ground is a heavy-duty F41 sports suspension, which centers factory power steering between stiff springs, boxed control arms and sturdy sway bars. The car's rebuilt power front disc and rear drum brake system is present, accounted for and functions exceptionally well. The aforementioned exhaust manifolds dump spent gases in to precise Gardner pipes, which breathe through correct resonators, throaty mufflers and polished stainless tips. Power meets the pavement through stylish Super Sport wheels, which lap F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas tires around stainless trim rings and requisite "SS" center caps. And mostly original, Satin Black floors, fitted with fresh rear wheelhouses during the car's extensive rebuild, serve as the perfect backdrop for a sandblasted and powdercoated frame. INTERIOR Decked in correct Medium Red vinyl, this convertible's fully restored interior feels comfortable and inviting. Its slick Strato bucket front and rear bench seats, which feature factory power adjustment for the car's driver, show virtually no signs of wear. In front of those seats, an original dash hangs a deluxe Chevelle gauge cluster above correct climate controls and a Delco AM/FM radio. Below that dash, fresh carpet centers a traditional horseshoe shifter inside an attractive, stainless-trimmed console. At the sides of that carpet, clean, "SS" branded door panels frame factory power windows and factory power door locks. In front of the driver, an NOS cushion-grip steering wheel laps a tilting column. And behind the passengers, a power-operated trunk centers a stickered spare and correct jack between a fresh mat and correct decklid decals.
