History …. it is AMAZING Purchased new in 1966 by a Texan named J. Yancy who would fuss over it and drive it very sparingly (…only 22,239 miles through May of 1994…) and then in 1996 would start using rare authentic Shelby and authentic Ford Hi-Po parts from his collection to support the build that he would ultimately finish sometime in the 1999, 2000 time frame. Mr. Yancy started his build with his 23k mile “C-code” convertible he purchased new in 1966 and ended up with what you see today – a 29,750 original mile example of what may well be the best Shelby GT350 “convertible” replica in existence. 2 owners over a 50 year period Mr. Yancy would keep his beloved convertible for 37 years before it went through 2 different brokers who would have it approximately a year before selling to the 2nd owner, whom I purchased it from. The second owner had the car for 13 years of very gentle ownership, during which time the odometer only reached 29,700 miles. That’s only 2 owners in 50 years, both of which intentionally PRESERVED this beauty in mint condition. Documentation Binder The car comes with a documentation binder that includes various items including a 2004 detailed write-up of the cars history by internationally known classic car dealer in Georgia, Fraser Dante. Mr. Yancy had relocated from Texas to Georgia and was selling his collection and this car ultimately ended up with Fraser Dante. Mr. Dante used information provided by Mr. Yancy along with some of his own research in drafting his write-up of the car. The following is an excerpt from the July 14th, 2004 Fraser Dante write-up: ……. “A show condition, gorgeous, full build of a 1966 SHELBY GT350 convertible replica built to exacting standards from the original and the continuation model in the early 80’s, this is a fabulous car with terrific Ford body, wonderful original fenders, quarters and floors ….. information supplied from the man who had the car built and kept in his collection… this great car was 1 of 1, built in Southwest Texas starting back in 1996 using information supplied by Shelby in the article from Hot Rod magazine, Mustang special edition, printed in the early 80’s, the builder (J. Yancy ) who owned the car from NEW is a long time Shelby and Mustang collector who used extensive NOS parts to make this an exacting replica of one of the most drivable and famous cars ever, even the wheels are from Shelby America ….. the quality of this car exceeds the original standards used by Shelby while keeping all the proper parts and pieces …. this convertible is one of the best bodies one can imagine, a rust free ‘C’ code car was used, mileage at that time was about 23,000 and this car with VIN# 6R08C123457 shows only 23,363 miles in July 2004 and has less than 500 miles on the build, all of the floors, quarter panels, and fenders are original with Ford stampings as appropriate ……..” Inspiration … the Shelby nexus Inspired by the 4 original GT350 convertibles, Mr. Yancy’s “final inspiration” to take his low miles convertible and build a GT350 replica came from an article in a 1981 Hot Rod Magazine (“Mustang special edition”) announcing the Shelby sponsored “pending build” of 12 replicas of the 4 original convertibles. These cars are known today as “Continuation Cars”. The 12 continuation cars were built in the early eighties by J. Brunk, president of Beverly Hills Mustang after being tasked by Carroll Shelby and team with sourcing 12 donor convertible bodies to build cars with select performance parts including NOS Hi-Po motors. (…it is interesting to note that one of the original 12 continuation cars is currently located just around the corner from this car on the same private airport here in Texas...). AUTHENTIC Hi-Po & Shelby parts used Mr. Yancy was a man on a mission “with the goal” of building the BEST Shelby GT350 convertible in existence. He gathered REAL DEAL authentic Shelby and Ford Hi-Po parts with various “date-codes” from the 1964 to 1966 period and built what I think may be the one of the best, if not the best, replica of the vaulted GT350 convertible there is. Certainly he started with the best possible platform - his 23k mile never wrecked, never rusty convertible that he bought new. They are NOT reproductions. They have the J-AX-4 code etched in edge of the glass and DS-100021 cast on the insides of the base – reproductions have neither. These mirrors are impossible to find and highly sought after by owners of original Shelby Cobras and as well as owners of original Shelby Mustangs. They were NOS when installed on this car and remain in excellent condition. The last NOS set I heard of went for $2,500. You can only imagine what an owner of an original $1mm Cobra would pay for these. I removed both of these mirrors to confirm the castings and the etched date code on the glass. That’s right, it has every base 442 option including the 455 big block that in the 1971 production year was built to the same specs as the 442. In 1971, the difference between the SX and the 442 is simply in the “presentation”. Basically it’s a “stripe & badge delete” 442 that was conceived and built for a very specific, well heeled target market. The target market for the SX was bankers, lawyers, doctors and corporate types who could afford a top of the line luxury “high performance” car but did not necessarily want all the “showmanship” that came with stripes, spoilers and emblems. It was kind of a factory “sleeper”. The ONLY outward sign that this was something special was the SX emblem on the fenders and of course the signature 442 rear bumper and trumpet exhaust. The motor was bored .030 over and a Mondello camshaft, special lifters and Flow Master exhaust were selected based on “direct consultation” with Mondello Performance. Additionally, a very mid stall was added in the turbo 400 tranny rebuild. The end result is that “smooth” on demand power and torque that made the 442 and its 455 power plant legendary. Ultimate road trip car It has a TALL 2.73 highway gear that allows for low rev highway driving …. this car is the ultimate road trip car. NO high revs at highway speeds, NO annoying aggressive lope, NO overheating and NO bad habits of any kind. Just boat loads of civilized long legged power from the Olds 455 torque monster. Great History 2 Texas owners since new Sold new at Medor Olds in Fort Worth Texas to its first owner, James Ward who, prior to his death, sold it to the 2nd owner and a personal friend of mine, Mike Wisdom. Mike purchased the car approximately 16 years ago. This same friend (Mike Wisdom) and fellow Texan does high quality car restoration work and has done some work for me over the years. The original owner loved this car and after logging 130k miles he parked it some time in late 1992, early 1993 (…. see the last Texas Inspection Sticker in photos above dated 5/29/92). After retiring the car, Mr. Ward held on to it with dreams of restoring it to its former glory. In the late ‘90’s he ended up taking to my friend for a full restoration but, due to failing health, ultimately ended up selling his dream machine to my friend. Restored by 2nd owner Mike Wisdom rebuilt virtually everything on the car. His goal was two fold. To bring the car back to show room new condition and to boost the performance to be more in line with the 1970 442. The restoration was completed about 1 year ago and has less than 500 miles since completion (most of these 500 miles have been logged by me). It shows no evidence of wear and looks show room new. While the original miles on the car are just over 131k, I have listed it at 500 miles which is the miles on the car since a total restoration. In any event the car will be sold as mileage EXEMPT due to its age. NOTE: The top currently on the car is serviceable, however it does not present as nice as the rest of the car so it is currently scheduled to be REPLACED along with a new windshield as the current windshield has one rock chip. The top on the car is white and will be replaced with a white top. These items are scheduled and will be done prior to shipping the car to the new owner. Good condition PRIOR to restoration Prior to restoration the car was in good condition (never wrecked, no rust issues and completely unaltered). It had been in a dry Texas climate since new and driven by one adult owner who cherished the car. However, after 130k miles and 21 years of service, it was tired and in need of some love. I saw this car many times BEFORE it was restored. In fact, on numerous occasions I tried to purchase it in its un-restored state from my friend. His answer was always …. “No, I am going to restore this one for myself”. That day finally came and the results are most impressive. Lucky for me, Mike’s focus is now turned to his next restoration project and I ended up with the car. This history is now documented for the lucky new owner in the above VIDEO. During the mechanical refurb, the body was removed from frame and floors and frame sandblasted and repainted in satin black after which EVERYTHING was replaced with NEW …. - new body mount bushing - new gas lines - new gas tank - new brake lines - new springs - new shocks - new exhaust - new custom made REMOVABLE towing system Drive long distances with confidence A one of a kind LOOK with “get in and go reliability” Our longest round trip was 1,500 trouble free miles when my wife and I drove it to the 2015 “Cruisin The Coast” event – people loved this car everywhere we went. We had the time of our life. This is a very comfortable car to travel in for hours at a time. It is super easy to drive with the power steering and power brakes and if you are a music lover you will love professionally installed sound system that is neatly tucked away. I installed the air conditioning in 2015 and it works great. The under dash unit is the best on the market and its vintage looking which is a prefect complement to the super cool interior. Well preserved low miles WAGON When I purchased the wagon I was told that the 74k miles on the odometer where original. While there is no way to prove it I can say that everything about the car makes it believable. It is a really tight car. I have driven it close to 6,000 trouble free miles during my ownership. The odometer is currently showing 79,253 miles however when I sell it the State of Texas requires any vehicle over 25 years old to be sold as miles EXEMPT. While it may have some weathered surfaces, this vehicle has clearly been loved and intentionally preserved for 58 years. The weathered surfaces are mainly surface rust and rust pitting in areas where the thin factory paint simply wore too away …. all of which translates into the REAL PATINA everyone loves and people now go to great lengths to replicate. It also has some of the typical rust issues around the back wagon door and window but nothing to worry about where long term integrity or functionality is concerned. The floors and frame appear to be rust free and as nice as when new. The original stainless trim and chrome on this car is in outstanding condition, nicer than I have seen on some restored cars! The roof rack shows a little distress but everything else is truly impressive for being untouched original. Interior Most of the interior is original with a nice patina and very minor wear for being 58 years old (note slight damage on drivers side seat corner). The dash, carpet and headliner are all new. Sound System If you like to listen to good music you will love this sound system. It was professionally installed using top of the line components. It is substantially hidden (mostly beneath the back seat) with nothing visible other than the head unit and rear speaker grills. MECHANICS ……. simply put it is excellent.
