This car was custom ordered with the richest color combination availabel and nearly every option available in 2004. This car was built for BMW's European Delivery Program and has been dealer serviced since its birth in May 2004. This car has had no expense spared in its care and maintenance. Its garage companions have been the likes of Ferraris and Bentleys to name a few. My point is not to brag, but to accurately convey the reality that "there is a difference between this car and the rest of the pack." Owners of fine automobiles tend to be more fastidious about their maintenance than ordinary drivers. Review: 15 years after the retirement of the original 6 Series (1977-1989), BMW will once again sell a high-dollar convertible that combines all the best the company has to offer in performance, luxury and style complete with the ability to seat a companion or baby seat in its 2+2 occupant compartment. Chief rival Mercedes-Benz has made plenty of money off well-to-do buyers who want vehicles that fit this profile, and it's no coincidence that BMW's new 645Ci convertible slots just about halfway between the much desired CLK500 and the upper-crust SL500 in length, width, wheelbase, curb weight and MSRP. This tells you plenty about the overall dimensions of the 645Ci about the same size as the 5 Series sedan and what it will take to get one upwards of $80,000.More interesting is what this casual comparison doesn't tell you. Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes have conditioned upscale convertible buyers to expect potent V8s and a smooth ride quality in this price bracket. But like other BMWs, the 645Ci immediately establishes itself as the athlete of its segment. We don't mean to speak for hard-core enthusiasts, who will prefer the Porsche 911 or, as one of our editors suggested, the Maserati Coupe. Rather, the 6 is for those seeking a gifted touring car that eagerly and deftly takes on a twisty road when given the chance, while dutifully swallowing up mile after mile of freeway pavement without complaint. Does this supreme balance of attributes give the BMW an edge over its softer competition? If you like to drive as much as we do, yes.The view from outside is special and rich, but the view is arguably even better from inside the car. Our Silver Grey test car had a contrasting bordeaux and black interior constructed of top-quality materials under the direction of an exacting hand. Even with the presence of the 21st-century iDrive vehicle management system, the 645Ci's cockpit retains a remarkably simple, driver-oriented feel that establishes its place in the BMW family tree (before it branched off to form the current 7 Series). Everything from the way the human body fits so perfectly into the sport seats to the ease with which you can read the analog gauges to the way the manual transmission's shifter falls so readily to hand gives the coupe a timeless quality that all the software in the world can't take away.While other manufacturers have experimented with various ways of illuminating the cabin, BMW continues to stick with bright orange backlighting for the gauges and controls. It's easy on the eyes and establishes an immediate link between a 2004 645Ci and previous BMWs that customers might have owned and loved. There are no roots to trace when it comes to the layout of the automatic climate control system, but this is the simplest setup the company has ever offered. Able to function independently of the iDrive interface, the system features dual temperature dials for the driver and passenger and a real "off" button. POWERTRAIN- The sophisticated 4.4-liter V8 under the hood is a meal by itself. Also found in the 5 and 7 Series lines, this engine is one of the most advanced eight-cylinder motors currently offered in a production vehicle. Continuously variable valve lift (called Valvetronic) eliminates the need for a conventional throttle and, together with infinitely variable valve timing (double VANOS) and a fully variable intake manifold, maximizes power and torque across the rpm band. The result on paper is 325 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. Numbers like these are almost commonplace among luxury vehicles these days, and it's not until you experience the engine for yourself that it seems like something special.Paired with the optional Steptronic Automatic transmission, the 645Ci moves out quickly, and power builds and builds as the tachometer's needle climbs unwaveringly to redline. Indeed it's potent, going to redline seems like a perfectly natural course of action. A carefully tuned exhaust note assures a glorious soundtrack in these moments of revelry. Even if you're not one to throw your driving record to the wind, you'll still enjoy the effortless passing maneuvers made possible by the V8, not to mention its quiet cruising demeanor.BMW claims a 5.5-second 0-to-60-mph time for 645s. We came very close to that in our instrumented testing, as our convertible made the run in 5.6 seconds and breezed through the quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds at 99.5 mph. Fuel mileage ratings are encouraging for a V8-powered vehicle. Cars equipped with the six-speed automatic fare the best with an 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway rating. The mostly aluminum 6 Series chassis provides the perfect complement to the excellent drivetrain. Suspension parts are shared with the 5 Series, but the 6 gets a lowered ride height, a slightly wider rear track and greater negative camber in back. The front springs and shock absorbers are firmer than the standard 545i settings but not as taut as the sport suspension calibrations on the manual-shift 545i (an optional sport suspension is not available on the 6). BMW's Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) is standard, and in simple terms, that means that our 645Ci had "active" front and rear anti-roll bars with distinct left and right sections that twist in opposite directions to suppress body roll when going around corners. Besides improving performance on twisty roads, BMW product literature notes that "there is a psychological component: Drivers and passengers alike marvel at the resulting 'flat cornering.'"And marvel we did at the 645's handling. After a day on some of our favorite two-lane highways, we came away impressed by the coupe's superb grip and balance in turns of all varieties. High-speed sweepers, tight washes, you name it the 6 is unflappable. Although the car is too big to impart the extension-of-my-own-body sensation of a 3 Series, it certainly does right by high-dollar coupe buyers. The suspension transmits plenty of information through the driver seat such that the driver feels like he's in on everything that's happening. At the same time, the ride quality is smooth and refined over all but the roughest pavement. Various Mercedes models may be able to keep up with the 645Ci when it comes to refinement, but not one of them can duplicate its entertainment potential.Active Steering, a bit of technology that debuted on the 5 Series, is also part of the 645's Sport Package. It differs from the standard variable-assistance steering in that a small electrically controlled gearbox mounted near the bottom of the steering column increases the amount of rotation that occurs when the driver turns the wheel. The idea is basically to reduce the amount of effort the driver has to supply during low- and midspeed maneuvers, and the system is able to take into account vehicle stability and uneven road surfaces, in addition to speed. The extra assistance is gradually reduced as vehicle speed increases, until the ratio becomes "conventional" at about 75 mph, according to BMW.Although it might sound like BMW has taken a portion of the driving experience out of the hands of the human driver and put it into the algorithms of a computer, Active Steering actually works quite well on the 645Ci. For starters, you don't have to turn the wheel nearly as much in a parking lot. At higher speeds, our test car's steering felt quick, accurate and highly communicative, requiring only subtle inputs in the turns. Of course, this could easily be a description of any BMW's behavior on twisty roads, and lacking a non-Sport 645Ci for a side-by-side comparison, we can't say that Active Steering is an absolute must-have item. It is worth noting, though, that engineers were able to incorporate additional functionality without taking away any of the world-class steering feel that sets BMWs apart from their peers. Editors' descriptions of the 645's steering ranged from "natural" to "nearly perfect."Braking is easy to overlook when discussing the more glamorous aspects of the vehicle, but like other BMWs, the 6 is near the top of its class in this category as well. Brake pedal feel is straightforward, progressive and considerably more natural in feel than that of Benz models with electronic setups. Braking distances are plenty short in everyday traffic, and the 3,800-pound 645Ci consistently stopped right around 120 feet in the 60-0 deceleration test at the track. This is a good number, of course, but consider that despite its subpar pedal feel, the 4,000-pound SL500 can haul down in an otherworldly 109 feet in the same test.Back inside the cockpit, the Sport Package provides excellent sport seats that hold you in place during hard cornering without feeling too confining when you're just driving to the grocery store. We spent three hours in the driver seat with no discomfort. There's plenty of room to adjust the seat in all directions; longer-legged drivers will particularly like the manually extendable seat bottom, which provides additional thigh support.Visibility from the driver seat isn't bad for a convertible or coupe, and all three of the mirrors have an auto-dimming feature. Ordering the Park Distance Control option should help you avoid any low-speed mishaps, as the front and rear sensors provide both audible warnings and a graphic display on the iDrive screen. Bi-xenon headlights are standard for maximum visibility at night.All cars with a dramatically curving roofline require those of taller stature to take extra care when getting in, but the 6 demands a little more concentration due to its high lower door sills. The sills can easily trip up an inattentive passenger the first time he gets into the coupe, and anyone with arthritis should check this out during a test-drive before placing an order.As you'd expect, occupants are well taken care of in the 645Ci in terms of safety. Airbags are standing by to protect everyone's head and torso in the event of a collision, and an advanced stability control system is onboard to help you avoid an accident in the first place. Storage space for cell phones and CDs is surprisingly generous, though, as a large center console container is ready to swallow up most odds and ends. VEHICLE CONDITION: The factory finish on this car is glossy and free of major blemishes or imperfections. The car has been piloted carefully through country roads and highways. The owners were non-smokers and the vehicle is free of any odors. The interior is stain free and immaculately clean. This car has been garage kept and has never been in a material collision. The rear bumper was refinished due to a minor incident several years ago. Documentation is available to confirm the minor nature of this refinish work. The bumper was painted several years ago and to the finest standards by one of the elite shops in the Philadelphia region. There is a minor stress crack at one of the bolts on the right front fender. This is common since the 6 Series uses a Plastic resin fender to reduce weight. We can have this repaired, but hesitate to do so since the paint is original and the defect is nearly undetectable. Jaguar, Lexus and Mercedes have conditioned upscale convertible buyers to expect potent V8s and a smooth ride quality in this price bracket. But like other BMWs, the 645Ci immediately establishes itself as the athlete of its segment. We don't mean to speak for hard-core enthusiasts, who will prefer the Porsche 911 or, as one of our editors suggested, the Maserati Coupe. Rather, the 6 is for those seeking a gifted touring car that eagerly and deftly takes on a twisty road when given the chance, while dutifully swallowing up mile after mile of freeway pavement without complaint. Does this supreme balance of attributes give the BMW an edge over its softer competition? If you like to drive as much as we do, yes. The view from outside is special and rich, but the view is arguably even better from inside the car. Our Silver Grey test car had a contrasting bordeaux and black interior constructed of top-quality materials under the direction of an exacting hand. Even with the presence of the 21st-century iDrive vehicle management system, the 645Ci's cockpit retains a remarkably simple, driver-oriented feel that establishes its place in the BMW family tree (before it branched off to form the current 7 Series). Everything from the way the human body fits so perfectly into the sport seats to the ease with which you can read the analog gauges to the way the manual transmission's shifter falls so readily to hand gives the coupe a timeless quality that all the software in the world can't take away. While other manufacturers have experimented with various ways of illuminating the cabin, BMW continues to stick with bright orange backlighting for the gauges and controls. It's easy on the eyes and establishes an immediate link between a 2004 645Ci and previous BMWs that customers might have owned and loved. There are no roots to trace when it comes to the layout of the automatic climate control system, but this is the simplest setup the company has ever offered. Able to function independently of the iDrive interface, the system features dual temperature dials for the driver and passenger and a real "off" button. POWERTRAIN- The sophisticated 4.4-liter V8 under the hood is a meal by itself. Also found in the 5 and 7 Series lines, this engine is one of the most advanced eight-cylinder motors currently offered in a production vehicle. Continuously variable valve lift (called Valvetronic) eliminates the need for a conventional throttle and, together with infinitely variable valve timing (double VANOS) and a fully variable intake manifold, maximizes power and torque across the rpm band. The result on paper is 325 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. Numbers like these are almost commonplace among luxury vehicles these days, and it's not until you experience the engine for yourself that it seems like something special. Paired with the optional Steptronic Automatic transmission, the 645Ci moves out quickly, and power builds and builds as the tachometer's needle climbs unwaveringly to redline. Indeed it's potent, going to redline seems like a perfectly natural course of action. A carefully tuned exhaust note assures a glorious soundtrack in these moments of revelry. Even if you're not one to throw your driving record to the wind, you'll still enjoy the effortless passing maneuvers made possible by the V8, not to mention its quiet cruising demeanor. BMW claims a 5.5-second 0-to-60-mph time for 645s. We came very close to that in our instrumented testing, as our convertible made the run in 5.6 seconds and breezed through the quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds at 99.5 mph. Fuel mileage ratings are encouraging for a V8-powered vehicle. Cars equipped with the six-speed automatic fare the best with an 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway rating. The mostly aluminum 6 Series chassis provides the perfect complement to the excellent drivetrain. Suspension parts are shared with the 5 Series, but the 6 gets a lowered ride height, a slightly wider rear track and greater negative camber in back. The front springs and shock absorbers are firmer than the standard 545i settings but not as taut as the sport suspension calibrations on the manual-shift 545i (an optional sport suspension is not available on the 6). BMW's Active Roll Stabilization (ARS) is standard, and in simple terms, that means that our 645Ci had "active" front and rear anti-roll bars with distinct left and right sections that twist in opposite directions to suppress body roll when going around corners. Besides improving performance on twisty roads, BMW product literature notes that "there is a psychological component: Drivers and passengers alike marvel at the resulting 'flat cornering.'" And marvel we did at the 645's handling. After a day on some of our favorite two-lane highways, we came away impressed by the coupe's superb grip and balance in turns of all varieties. High-speed sweepers, tight washes, you name it the 6 is unflappable. Although the car is too big to impart the extension-of-my-own-body sensation of a 3 Series, it certainly does right by high-dollar coupe buyers. The suspension transmits plenty of information through the driver seat such that the driver feels like he's in on everything that's happening. At the same time, the ride quality is smooth and refined over all but the roughest pavement. Various Mercedes models may be able to keep up with the 645Ci when it comes to refinement, but not one of them can duplicate its entertainment potential. Active Steering, a bit of technology that debuted on the 5 Series, is also part of the 645's Sport Package. It differs from the standard variable-assistance steering in that a small electrically controlled gearbox mounted near the bottom of the steering column increases the amount of rotation that occurs when the driver turns the wheel. The idea is basically to reduce the amount of effort the driver has to supply during low- and midspeed maneuvers, and the system is able to take into account vehicle stability and uneven road surfaces, in addition to speed. The extra assistance is gradually reduced as vehicle speed increases, until the ratio becomes "conventional" at about 75 mph, according to BMW. Although it might sound like BMW has taken a portion of the driving experience out of the hands of the human driver and put it into the algorithms of a computer, Active Steering actually works quite well on the 645Ci. For starters, you don't have to turn the wheel nearly as much in a parking lot. At higher speeds, our test car's steering felt quick, accurate and highly communicative, requiring only subtle inputs in the turns. Of course, this could easily be a description of any BMW's behavior on twisty roads, and lacking a non-Sport 645Ci for a side-by-side comparison, we can't say that Active Steering is an absolute must-have item. It is worth noting, though, that engineers were able to incorporate additional functionality without taking away any of the world-class steering feel that sets BMWs apart from their peers. Editors' descriptions of the 645's steering ranged from "natural" to "nearly perfect." Braking is easy to overlook when discussing the more glamorous aspects of the vehicle, but like other BMWs, the 6 is near the top of its class in this category as well. Brake pedal feel is straightforward, progressive and considerably more natural in feel than that of Benz models with electronic setups. Braking distances are plenty short in everyday traffic, and the 3,800-pound 645Ci consistently stopped right around 120 feet in the 60-0 deceleration test at the track. This is a good number, of course, but consider that despite its subpar pedal feel, the 4,000-pound SL500 can haul down in an otherworldly 109 feet in the same test. Back inside the cockpit, the Sport Package provides excellent sport seats that hold you in place during hard cornering without feeling too confining when you're just driving to the grocery store. We spent three hours in the driver seat with no discomfort. There's plenty of room to adjust the seat in all directions; longer-legged drivers will particularly like the manually extendable seat bottom, which provides additional thigh support. Visibility from the driver seat isn't bad for a convertible or coupe, and all three of the mirrors have an auto-dimming feature. Ordering the Park Distance Control option should help you avoid any low-speed mishaps, as the front and rear sensors provide both audible warnings and a graphic display on the iDrive screen. Bi-xenon headlights are standard for maximum visibility at night. All cars with a dramatically curving roofline require those of taller stature to take extra care when getting in, but the 6 demands a little more concentration due to its high lower door sills. The sills can easily trip up an inattentive passenger the first time he gets into the coupe, and anyone with arthritis should check this out during a test-drive before placing an order. As you'd expect, occupants are well taken care of in the 645Ci in terms of safety. Airbags are standing by to protect everyone's head and torso in the event of a collision, and an advanced stability control system is onboard to help you avoid an accident in the first place. Storage space for cell phones and CDs is surprisingly generous, though, as a large center console container is ready to swallow up most odds and ends. REVIEW- (Highlighting the 2004 redesign) The moment Honda's S2000 hit the market as a 2000 model it was clearly one of the most uncompromised sports cars made available to U.S. buyers in decades. It only sat two and those two could only be so wide. Unlike every other Honda except the motorcycles, the Acura NSX and some lawnmowers it had rear-wheel drive. The chassis was stiff and it handled with the immediacy and precision of a raw nerve sliced open by an expert surgeon. The six-speed transmission's throws could be measured in single-digit microns and the normally aspirated, DOHC, 16-valve, 2.0-liter four made an unfathomable 240-horsepower thanks to Honda's famed VTEC variable valve timing technology, a super-lightweight reciprocating assembly, a dizzying 9,000-rpm redline and the sacrifice of virtually all usable low-end torque. It was an easy car to love, and a tough car with which to live. For 2004, Honda has significantly updated the S2000, with most of the changes aimed toward civilizing the car a bit for everyday driving. The engine has grown, the redline has dropped, the transmission's gear ratios have been jumbled, the shifter action has improved, the cockpit is slightly roomier and the chassis subtly revised. Can an S2000 with built-in concessions to comfort and practicality compromises be as fully satisfying as a sports car? There will be an answer. The modifications to the 2004 S2000's external appearance are slight but worthwhile. Up front the nose has been reshaped with a wider air intake below the bumper and new clear lens, projector headlights above it. Out back the rear bumper cover has been tweaked to appear closer to the ground, dual exhaust tips are now an oval shape instead of round, and the taillights incorporate three LED elements in place of the two conventionally illuminated lamps used previously. Throw in the new 10-spoke, 17-inch wheels wrapped by wider Bridgestone Potenza RE 050 tires and the latest S2000 is effectively updated in terms of appearance. The real substance of the S2000's evolution lives most profoundly under the hood where, though it's still basically the same all-aluminum engine design (under a new cover plate), an increase in crank stroke has swollen displacement from 2.0 to 2.2 liters. Beyond that the compression ratio has been raised from 11.0 to 1 to 11.1 to 1 and the VTEC system has been tweaked so that the point of transition to the high-speed cam profiles has been lowered. The longer stroke knocks 800 rpm off the redline to keep piston speeds reasonable, but in exchange there's a bit more peak torque (161 pound-feet up from 153) and that peak occurs at a friendlier 6,500 instead of 7,500 rpm. There's no more horsepower the engine still maxes out at 240 ponies but that now happens at 7,800 instead of 8,300 rpm. It's not just that the engine's power and torque peaks have moved downward, but supplies of both across the rev range have increased. Between 1,000 rpm (just off idle) to 8,000 rpm (200 rpm short of the redline) available torque and horsepower are consistently up between 4 and 10 percent, and there's even some real heft as low as 3,000 rpm. Puttering from mall to work to home, the 2.2-liter engine is far friendlier than the 2.0-liter and yet retains most of its eagerness to leap for the redline. The VTEC system's operation seems a bit less abrupt in the revised 2.2, but the engine still snarls as it reaches the juicy center of its power band at around 6,000 rpm. Honda claims that 0-to-60-mph times slip down to "less than 6.0 seconds" with the new engine, and since Edmunds has had previous S2000s scooting to 60 in as quick as 5.8 seconds the carmaker is probably being conservative. The new S2000 feels quicker and likely hits 60 in about 5.5 seconds. To get the most from the engine, the six-speed transmission's ratios have been juggled, with the gearing now slightly lower in the bottom four gears, a tad higher in fifth and unchanged in sixth. New carbon-fiber synchronizers have been added to every gear except reverse and while they may improve shift quality, that improvement must be very slight. After all, the S2000 transmission already sported one of the world's quickest and most precise shifters. The final drive ratio remains entrenched at 4.10 to 1. Further civilizing the 2004 S2000 is a revised driving environment. This is still a very close-coupled cockpit, but new deeply sculpted door panels add a few millimeters of hiproom. New aluminum-looking (it's really plastic) trim for the radio cover furnishes a performance edge and there's now a second cupholder aboard, effectively doubling the car's commuting range. The steering wheel is still tiny in diameter and rides low in the driver's lap, but the instrumentation behind it is more readable than before, with the sweeping digital tach having less space between its segments and its companion digital speedometer easier to read. Some purists argue that traditional mechanical instruments would be better, but current open wheel race cars use a display similar to the S2000's, so it's tough to fault Honda for creating an authentic performance ambience. The S2000 cockpit isn't built for transcontinental cruising; it's built for attacking the road in bursts, thrusts and parries. And by that standard it's dang near excellent. Snugged down into the driver seat, the S2000's controls all fall readily to hand. The aluminum shift knob now has a band of leather wrapped around it for comfort and the thick rim of the steering wheel provides a perfect grip. This is still a tight fit for anyone who wears a 42 Regular or larger suit, but incrementally better than previous S2000s and at least tolerable for journeys up to about 200 miles. After that, put the S2000 on a trailer and tow it with your Suburban. Fiddling with the S2000's finely balanced chassis must have been daunting for Honda going into the 2004 updating. The structure itself has been stiffened with new gusseting at the front crossmember joints, some additional fixing points for the stiffening rod at the rear and additional reinforcement of the rear wheel arch bulkheads. The front suspension has been more precisely located with new brackets for the upper control arms. However, the S2000 was already an admirably solid machine and discerning any fortification through the seat of the pants is probably impossible. To accommodate the new, larger tires (the previous S2000 ran P205/55R16 front and P225/50R16 rear tires while the new edition's Bridgestones measure P215/45R17 up front and 245/40R17 out back) the steering ratio has been lowered from 13.8 to 1 to 14.9 to 1 and the electric power steering reprogrammed accordingly. The double wishbone suspension design at each corner remains but the front spring rates are up 6.7 percent and they've dropped 10 percent in the back along with a 1.8-millimeter thinner rear anti-sway bar. Of course the shock tuning is new and the brakes get new pad material, a new master cylinder and a new ABS system incorporating "yaw control logic." On a racetrack, the revised suspension, bigger tires and slightly better brakes let a driver push the new S2000 deeper into corners while the richer torque curve is more forgiving of gear selection screwups coming out of them. The original S2000's oversteer came on pretty suddenly, but the limit transition is more manageable and smoother in the updated machine. An expert might hustle the original, less forgiving S2000 just as quickly around some tracks as the updated car, but for most of us the new car will be quicker and safer. Track performance is something every prospective S2000 owner should consider, because there's little reason to buy one unless it's going to spend some time on a race course. Even the tamer, more civilized, 24-pound-heavier 2004 edition of this hard-edged car is not an easy machine to live with day in and day out. It's not easy to get in and out of (particularly when the quick-dropping power top is up), it doesn't coddle either the driver or passenger and, while the engine is much easier-going than before, it still needs to spin with urgency and a banshee wail to extract maximum performance. The 2004 S2000 (Shouldn't it be the S2200 now?) may be more compromised than previous S2000s and that makes it even more lovable than ever, but it's still the least compromised new sports car for sale in North America. If you really want to add a pure, unalloyed sports car to your fleet, why spend more? The 3.0i Sport Package now includes 18-inch wheels rather than 17s, while the price of optional HD radio has been lowered. Introduction BMW reinvented the European roadster 12 years ago with the Z3, an instant classic driven by hairdressers and James Bond alike. It not only beat its Mercedes and Porsche competitors to the market, it beat their prices as well. While the 2008 BMW Z4 isn't quite the classic its predecessor was, it maintains that price advantage while being a much more adept driver's car, boasting a high level of handling and performance. It's hard to beat top-down motoring, and for that, the Z4 delivers in droves. After all, the only thing more fun than a convertible is a BMW convertible. Just roll back the fast-retracting roof (available with manual or power operation) and settle into the supportive, roomy driver seat for some high-speed fun in the sun. Even if the weather turns chilly, flip on the optional heated seats, and in fine roadster tradition, don a tweed cap and wool scarf. It's not very often a BMW is considered a budget buy, but the Z4 is. While the Porsche Boxster/Cayman and Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class enjoy about the same prestige, they cost thousands more than the Bimmer. Of course, the SLK's retractable hardtop provides many of the benefits offered by both the Z4 coupe and roadster, while the Porsches have a lead in the arena of handling excellence. Still, if you're looking for a two-seater that delivers outstanding performance and the glamour of a high-end nameplate at a reasonable price, the 2008 BMW Z4 is the best candidate to consider. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2008 BMW Z4 is available as a two-seat roadster or coupe. The roadster has a traditional, manually operated convertible soft top with a defroster-equipped glass rear window. Two trim levels, 3.0i and 3.0si, are available. The 3.0i (roadster only) comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers with heated wiper jets, heated outside mirrors, full power accessories, manually operated six-way adjustable seats, vinyl "leatherette" upholstery, a tilt-telescoping steering wheel and a 10-speaker audio system with a CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The 3.0si version adds leather upholstery, a center armrest, aluminum interior trim, a premium audio system, a trip computer and automatic climate control. Most of these features are available on the 3.0i as options. The Sport Package includes upgraded wheels and tires, a sport-tuned suspension and BMW's Dynamic Driving Control feature that quickens throttle response and reduces power-steering assist. Powertrains and Performance The rear-drive Z4 is available with one of two engines. The 3.0i features a 3.0-liter inline-6 that produces 215 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. The 3.0si boasts a high-output version of the same engine making 255 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. Each trim comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic with manual shift control is an available option. According to BMW, a manual-equipped 3.0si can achieve 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. For both trims and body styles, 2008 fuel economy estimates are 18 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for manual-equipped cars. Safety Every BMW Z4 comes standard with antilock disc brakes, run-flat tires, rollover protection (for the convertible), stability control, side airbags and active knee protection. In government crash tests, the Z4 roadster earned four out of five stars for frontal-impact protection. It received three stars for side impact safety. Interior Design and Special Features Simplicity is the prevailing aesthetic within the 2008 BMW Z4's cabin. This is a driver's car, and as such, the cockpit's furnishings offer little to shift your focus from the road. The cabin offers a broad dash, pleasant gauges, firm sport seats and not much else. There's lots of standard metallic trim, though, and wood trim is available for those seeking a more classic look. Lowering the top doesn't result in compromises with regard to storage space in the trunk. With the top down, the roadster's 9-cubic-foot trunk capacity remains almost unchanged. For comparison, the Mercedes SLK offers 10 cubic feet of cargo space with its hardtop up, but considerably less in top-down configuration. The coupe can feel a little confined, but even those a few inches north of 6 feet should have just enough headroom. Driving Impressions In nearly all performance aspects, the 2008 BMW Z4 shines. Acceleration, braking and handling are all excellent. The Z4 is in its element on lightly trafficked roads where one can push the car toward its limits and enjoy the engine's sonorous exhaust note.
