Baker Jr of Tennessee who died mid 2014. Vehicle sales proceeds were donated to benefit the Howard H. Baker Jr. Institute for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee under a public auction. Not having known Senator Baker publicly or personally, not originating from Tennessee or having had children, my original interest in Studebaker drew me to this auction. This nicely restored and maintained Starlight Coupe is being made available to those with a true vested interest in the model line. A bit about Howard H. Baker, Jr For those, like myself who did not know anything about Senator Howard H. Baker Jr. of Tennessee, he framed the central question of the Watergate scandal when he asked, “What did the president know, and when did he know it?” and framed portraits of history with his ever-present camera while Senate majority leader and White House chief of staff, died June 26, 2014 at the age of 88 at his home in Huntsville, Tenn. Baker was born in Huntsville, TN, attended the McCallie School in Chattanooga and after graduating, he attended Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. During World War II, he trained at a U.S. Navy facility on the campus of the University of the South in Sweanee, TN, in the V-12 Navy College Training Program and served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law. That same year, he was admitted to the Tennessee bar and began his law practice. The rotunda at the University of Tennessee College of Law is now named for Baker. I have a beautiful 1982 Mercedes Coupe Diesel for sale. This is my personal car that I have owned for the last 6 years. I am a enthusiast of cars of this era and am thinning my herd down in preparation of a move down to New Orleans. This MBZ has spent most of her life in Tennessee. She was first owned by a Dr. who purchased her brand new in Nashville. When I bought her she was owned by a nice older lady living in Chattanooga. My job has had me moving around every couple of years, so with me she has lived in Kentucky, Florida, Virginia, and for the past 18 months in Baltimore. She is a 5th car, and I never drove her in the snow or salt. I have been renting a garage to house her and my other toys, so she has not suffered in the NE winter. As I write this, I am riding in her passenger seat on the way back to Baltimore from our vacation in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This will be a 700 mile drive round trip and she has transported me, my husband, my son, our 2 dogs and all our gear in comfort and style. Such a great car to cruise in...I will definitely miss her. I have taken good care of this Coupe. The Coupes were actually the rarest of the Mercedes W123 type diesel cars that were made for the US....only about 8,000 total. These Mercedes are famous for their bullet proof engines that can easily go 500,000+ miles when maintained. While many people selling their diesel Mercedes love to talk about the longevity of the engines, many don't like to discuss the other maintenance items that definitely will need to have been addressed on a 32 year old car. I have well over $10,000 in receipts for repairs and maintenance during the 6 years I have owned her! If you are not a car person, I will simply say that the almost all the suspension items have been replaced and lots of parts that make the engine run well have been replaced, upgraded or fixed. I would jump in this car and drive her to California tomorrow without a worry. If you are a car person, here is a list of some of the major work done: Suspension: 1. Vacuum system service The car body has around 176k miles on her clock. The engine is not original to the car. It was donated from a 85 turbo diesel and runs perfectly. The original engine suffered a mishap when my dear husband decided to drive her for about 6 month while I was out of town and never checked the oil....divorce was narrowly averted! The transplanted engine was installed professionally and actually allowed for several of the engine seals that typically leak oil to be replaced...always a silver lining I guess :-) Her paint is original and the paint shines and presents well. If you are right up on her you will see some minor imperfections...rock chips, some faded areas, and some "spider webbing" in the clear coat. The jack points are absolutely solid. A lot of these cars are rust buckets. This one only has one very small bit of bubbling on the passenger quarter panel. The only other body issue is a shallow dent in the front right quarter panel. The dent is smooth and could probably be rolled out easily. I don't know how it happened, it was there when I bought her. I have no need to get bad karma by trying to hide any known issues about this car. There are only a few things that will warrant your attention not immediately, but soon. 1. The front struts are working fine, but the left is beginning to seep. I'm sure she would ride very nicely with a new set of bilstein in the front to match the ones in the back. 2. The AC has not been converted. I just had it filled with freon and leak tested. They did not find any leaks, but the air is blowing cool not cold. I'm not sure what the root issue is. 3. The rear windows do not roll down. I've had them tested and unfortunately the motors are in-op and will have to be replaced if you want them to work. All cars of this vintage have some quirks.
