This gorgeous 1972 Pantera is the one to own if your idea of fun is actually driving it instead of rubbing it with a diaper, especially with an over-built stroker motor and a slick 2-tone paint combination. The Pantera is a curious, but not unprecedented mixture of Italian craftsmanship and American muscle, and when it was new, there just weren't many cars of any kind that could keep up with it. Perhaps it's because of that Ford DNA in its history that kept prices low, but today collectors are realizing that these cars deserve a spot in Italy's illustrious supercar traditions. That also explains why this one received such a high-end restoration, which, although not totally stock, delivers on the promises made by the Pantera's gorgeous bodywork. Black over silver accentuates the 1970s wedge shape, which has aged at least as well as the Ferrari 308 and still commands respect among aficionados. Fit and finish are probably better today than they were when the car was new and the two-tone paint seems to emphasize the American side of the Pantera's genealogy, but there's no disputing that this car generates a ton of attention everywhere it goes. The interior is pure Italian, complete with the usual gorilla-style driving position and gated shift lever for the 5-speed manual gearbox. Leather buckets have attractive pleats and textured inserts and they're surprisingly comfortable for long hauls. The instruments are housed in very cool twin pods with auxiliary gauges running down the center stack and the overall look is unique and very attractive. A leather-wrapped steering wheel feels suitably Italian in your hands and while the shifter takes some muscle and some familiarity, it's quite rewarding to master. You'll probably never get tired of the sonorous V8 that inhales and roars just behind your head, but there's also a great-sounding AM/FM/CD stereo fitted horizontally, which is the only way it would work. There's a bit of storage space up front in a nicely appointed trunk area, and a much larger trunk behind the mid-mounted engine, which is an impressive bit of packaging. The Pantera always used a 351 cubic inch Ford V8, but this one is powered by an all-new Ford stroker motor punched out to 420 cubic inches. That's big block power in a small block package and the extra cubes make this car feel invincible on the street. It surely lives up to the promises made by the outrageous bodywork and with bulletproof Ford mechanicals, the Pantera is far from fussy and inexpensive to maintain, even for the do-it-yourself hobbyist. It's intimidating looking into that engine bay, but the engineering is solid and straightforward so if you've been under the hood of a Mustang, you'll see a lot that's familiar here. The exhaust system is beautifully crafted and sounds downright nasty, and with a ZF 5-speed manual transmission it's a joy to drive. A capable suspension, 4-wheel disc brakes, and stock 15-inch aluminum wheels give it confidence on and off the track and it wears recent 205/50/15 front and 245/60/15 rear Michelin radials. The Pantera has become an A-list celebrity and this one with a frame-off restoration and a brutal powerplant makes the argument that Ferraris may be garage art, but Panteras are meant to be driven. Constructed by Huffaker Engineering, one of the oldest and most successful race car builders in the United States. Three such cars were built for I.M.S.A. (International Motor Sports Association) GTU Competition using the beautiful 288GTO body styling and race prepared 308 engine. Very low time on this superbly engineered racing Ferrari. By the time the cars were completed in 1990, there was a rule change at I.M.S.A. only allowing bodywork within 3 years of current production. There was also the loss of a sponsorship package. The cars never saw the heat of battle in professional competition. This particular car has been driven in only a few track events including, a Ferrari Club of America track day, two SCCA regional races, and a private track day. This particular car has been in a private collection since 1995. At a Ferrari Club of America National Meet at Summit Point Raceway one of the cars out-qualified the FASTEST F40 by 2.9 secounds! The Bill Pound Automotive highly modified 308 GTB engine is said to produce 390bhp @ 9600 rpm. The weight of the car is near 2000 lbs. The Huffaker chassis is designed using inboard rocker arm type suspension. This reduces unsprung weight and makes spring changes and ride height adjustment a snap. The cars were track tested and setup by Huffaker Engineering before delivery. The Hewland DGB300 transaxle supplied in the car is one of the most widely used of the time and parts and gear sets are readily available. The chassis is also fitted with AP Racing air jacks. The brakes use Alcon calipers with 13" rotors supplied by Coleman Racing Products. The wheels are 16" BBS three piece center lock, 10" wide front and 12" rear. The Bill Pound Automotive race prepared engine is quite special. The front of the engine was shortened by 3.5 inches in order to fit within the confines of the 92.1 inch wheelbase and to fit longitudinally with the Hewland gearbox. The water pump has been re-located and the camshaft drive system was modified along with the front cover. The engine uses Testa Rossa timing belts and the camshaft pulleys are adjustable. The camshaft are a custom billet race grind with a .514" intake lift @ 320 degrees duration and .490" exhaust lift @ 324 degrees. The pistons are a custom design with special low expansion forgings. The connecting rods are custom forged with larger pin diameter. The heads are two valve 308, gas flowed with custom valves with titanium retainers. The electronic fuel injection system is supplied by Hillborn Fuel Injection. The fuel injection and ignition is managed by a EFI Technology ECU. The dry sump oiling system is a external mounted Weaver Bros. pump with a custom cast oil pan and swirl type dry sump tank. Spares include three new sets of custom Crower connecting rods and two sets of custom Ross forged pistons. ______________________________________________________________________________ PLEASE INQUIRE FOR ADDITIONAL PICTURES ______________________________________________________________________________In 1971, the well-recognized designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, whom was responsible for the design of the Maserati Boomerang, (one of the most iconic concept cars ever made) brought forth a new creation known as the Bora which made its debut in the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. With its roots stemming back to the Tipo 63, the mid-engine Bora came with a 4.7L or 4.9L quad cam V8 eventually coming standard with a revised 4.9L that put out 310bhp horsepower at 6000rpm which was about 30 more horsepower than the previous engine. From a design standpoint, cars of this era were extremely flamboyant and possessed styling elements that quite frankly had never been thought to be tangible. Mechanically, engines were being mounted in the middle of the car instead of the front to improve weight distribution and to allow uniq ue body designs to take fruition. These supercars that were being built were extraordinary and seemed to be ahead of their time. The Lamborghini Miura and Countach , the De Tomaso Pantera, the Ferrari 308, the Lancia Stratos, were all mid-engine and boasted extravagant designs that were fit for any 10 year old’s bedroom wall. The Maserati Bora also was mid-engine, pretty quick with a 0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds, but was more elegant in design. It also had a characteristic that almost all of its competitors seemed to severely lack which was that the Bora was sensible. Take for example the Lamborghini Countach. It is absolutely stunning to look at but is difficult to enter and exit, not very comfortable to be in for extended periods of time, there was not much head room, the clutch was heavy, you could not see out of the rear, and the cabin was a bit loud. Issues similar to this are what the flashy 70’s supercars had in common yet the Bora was quite the opposite. The Maserati Bora had a full size boot in the front, the mechanics were designed for safety and functionality, the interior was spacious and quiet all while still remaining appealing in design. All in all the Maserati was much more mild and practical than its rivals and still managed to encompass the qualities of a supercar. The reasoning behind this approach was Maserati’s client base. It consisted of individuals of sustained wealth and a taste for sophistication. There were individuals who were not looking for the flashy Lamborghini but a car that drove like a supercar in the 70’s and was still usable on a day to day basis. Even today, one will notice that the Bora is comfortable and pleasant to drive bringing us to the example on offer. This 1975 Bora, chassis #AM11749US930/engine #AM1071149930, is a matching numbers example that exhibits driver quality condition. Its origins are rooted in the City of Angles, with Los Angeles California serving as its first home once it departed the factory according to the original delivery note. Included in the Maserati Classiche Documents is a document that reads Mantaggio E Finitura Venturra (End of Line Data Sheet) in the heading and indicates that the car was shipped to New York on June 6, 1975. The Avviso Di Spedizione (Delivery Note) then shows invoice 334/A of July 5, 1975 to have this example arriving at Spett. Le Maserati Automobiles Inc., 12615 Beatrice Street, Los Angeles California. Furthermore, bringing light to the more recent whereabouts of this example, the service records show a $10k service completed by Dino Motors in San Manteo, California. Based off of this authentic documentation as well as the service records, it can be concluded that this example spent the majority of its life on the west coast, specifically in California. The example on offer was then brought to Arizona where its current caretaker resides and is now in Philadelphia being looked after in the LBI stable. Upon approach of this car, one will notice some minor imperfections in the paint which can be attributed to previous road use that has been accompanied by proper service and maintenance. These imperfections consist of several small nicks that have been touched up as well as a light scuff here and there but nothing severe enough to make one cringe. This car has been tastefully altered from its original yellow exterior to a deep and elegant navy blue. Continuing one’s examination of the car, the panel fitment and seams all fall into acceptable clearances. The stainless steel top still shows well and is a design feature that is specific to the Bora. As far as the rubber is concerned, some areas have begun to crack, for instance the rubber seal that surrounds the front windshield. The U.S. style bumpers have begun to display some faint cracking as well but with a driver quality car, these are items that can be expected and are not taken into consideration until the car is inspected up close. The wheels are original, still baring the factory stickers and are in good condition having no curb rash. Overall, the exterior of this example poses no major faults and presents well with inviting characteristics of a driver quality example. It is the perfect base for a color change back to yellow (quite rare) or will provide a great basis for current use and enjoyment. Moving to the interior, a glance at the door jams will reveal that the color change was quite thorough and properly completed with very clean jams. The driver and passenger seats are finished in a gray leather (originally black) have no tears or notable eye sores with their unique shape making them not only attractive but fairly comfortable. With the door open, some fading located on the side of the dash where the door panel meets it can be noted but items such as this contribute to the patina of the car. Once seated, you are presented with the original steering wheel and gauges. A look around the cabin will reveal elements that are consistent with an enjoyable and original driver quality car; some flaws, but again nothing short of a driver. The components and finishing materials have a welcomed age on them and function as they should. Stepping out of the cabin and relocating to the rear of the car, peering through the rear glass you are presented with the engine cover that Maserati decided to implement to cater to their more sophisticated consumer base. It is not until the rear bonnet is opened and the cover removed where one can then gaze at the 4.9L V8 engine, boasting the Maserati name on each of the valve covers. Once again this reveals a driver quality car with the engine bay in presentable and obviously serviced condition but to make it perfect, it would need some tidying up cosmetically. Mechanically however, the engine runs strong and pulls well with no major leaks or issues noted. Many of the hoses are supple and new along with new gaskets and a rebuilt fuel system. Sitting behind the engine is the original spare in its original boot. The front trunk does have some flaws in the carpeting but also houses the original tool kit and jack. The underside of the car shows in consistency with the rest of the car, cosmetically revealing its age to an extent but completely operational. Finally we have reached the discussion regarding the drive quality that the Bora provides. This example has recently received a thorough 10k service that has sorted all items that needed tending to. This service consisted of replacing and or repairing an assortment of components such as seat belts and bulbs, to fuel hoses and the clutch slave cylinder. Upon turning the key of this example, the driver is presented with a strong crank, and without much hassle, the engine fires. Once the fluids have gotten warm and the engine has reached operating temperature, you can put the Bora’s 4.9L V8 to the test. Put your foot down and the engine preforms an Italian tuned octet that raises the hair on the back of any enthusiast’s neck with an almost muscle-car-like tune. The gauges reveal a steady and constant water temperature, good oil pressure, followed by uneventful and smooth gear changes via the 5-speed gearbox. Lift your foot off the gas and the exhaust lets out a wonderful, almost metallic sounding pop and crackle that is thoroughly addicting. The steering is slightly on the heavier side but usable at speed as is common with most Italian sports cars of the era. The braking system functions as it should with the absence of any unwanted noises, pulls, or inconsistencies noted. This 1975 Maserati Bora has an immense amount of enjoyment to offer, for it presents in a driver quality state that can be enjoyed without the burden for worrying about incurring minor flaws during use. Alternatively, it would be the perfect base for an easy cosmetic restoration back to its interesting original colors. Mechanically, it is well sorted and performs flawlessly making it the perfect sunny Sunday afternoon driver that has been well tended to. The Bora came about during a revolutionary period for cars and possesses the elements that qualify it as a 70’s supercar but omits the majority of the inconveniences that similar cars like the Countach have. The example on offer is the more desirable 4.9L model, awarding it much more growth potential. The car on offer would make a fantastic and interesting driver or a sturdy foundation to launch a restoration to bring it up to a concours quality example. The Maserati Company, owned by the Orsi family, set out to not only remain involved in racing but to introduce a series production sport and GT car. Orsis sold out to Citroen in 1969 and soon after, the Maserati Merak V6 was introduced in 1971 and Italian styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro. In 1976 Alejandro de Tomaso took over Maserati and improved the Merak in 1978 by replacing the Citroen hydraulically-assisted brake system with the Bora’s ZF five-speed transaxle and larger wheel and tyre package, making the Merak a better balanced performer. Maserati’s build quality greatly improved under de Tomaso’s management. The three-litre Merak is a prime example of a great Maserati engine in a nimble and balanced chassis, with commendable driver and passenger accommodations and wrapped in Giugiaro’s styling, which has more than stood the test of time. The late model "SS" cars (like this example) use the much more attractive leather interior. Only 277 Merak SS were built with the Bora style interior, and are the most desirable. A little bit about Chrysler's TC by Maserati by Stephen Lyons The TC and Chrysler LeBaron had the same designer. The color coordinated door handles were a first for Chrysler. The Chrysler TC automobile came about as the result of collaboration between Chrysler and Maserati, an arrangement rooted in the friendship of the charismatic men in charge of the two companies, Lee Iacocca and his friend Alejandro de Tomaso. The link was perhaps ahead of its time, with the low-volume Maserati providing its image and tuning expertise, and the high-volume Chrysler providing its engineering and sales capabilities. The basic idea was to add some glamour to Chrysler (and some profit to Maserati); at the same time, various high-performance, turbocharged Dodge Daytonas and other vehicles (such as the Spirit R/T) were being launched to spice up the company’s reputation. Conceived as a two-passenger luxury grand touring convertible and changed only in minor details from its early prototypes, the TC was intended to be Chrysler's image-building flagship. Unfortunately, the building and promotion of semi-drivable pre-production examples could not make good the TC's intemperately announced introduction as a 1987 model. The subsequent two-year delay in getting the car into actual production was a monumental public relations and marketing blunder, especially since rather than preceding the Chrysler LeBaron convertible — and lending its prestige to that vehicle — it ended up being introduced afterwards. That meant that, rather than the LeBaron being seen as inheriting cues from the high-end TC, the TC was seen as being too similar to the run-of-the-mill (though attractive) LeBaron. As it finally worked out, by late 1988 an assembly line of sorts had been set up in Milan, where standard Chrysler engines (a 2.2 liter turbo for 1989, a Mitsubishi V-6 in 1990 and 1991) with automatic transmissions were sent to be mated to the largely handcrafted bodies, the whole cars then being shipped back to the U.S. for sale only by selected Chrysler-Plymouth dealerships. A more exotic variation of the TC sported a more powerful Chrysler-based 2.2 liter engine fitted with a double overhead cam 16 valve Maserati head fabricated by Cosworth in England; an even more powerful version of this engine would show up as the Turbo III. This hotter powerplant could only be had with a 5-speed Getrag manual gearbox. The TC’s 16-valve 2.2 liter engine was engineered by Maserati and developed by Chrysler, Maserati, and a contractor; it used the standard 2.2 liter engine blocks and various other parts made at the Trenton Engine Plant, with final assembly in Modena, Italy. Maserati designed the aluminum head, with direct-action cams above the valves and shim-based valve lash adjustment; they set up a cog-based cam drive, both manifolds, the accessory drive system, and revised rods and crank. Mahle pistons were used; a remotely mounted intercooler was used with the IHI RHB52 turbocharger. This engine produced 200 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque, very respectable numbers (albeit beaten by Chrysler in 1991 with the Turbo III engines. Automatic-transmission cars were restricted to the 174 horse Chrysler-built 2.2 Turbo II, and after 1989, the Mitsubishi V6. Although sharing styling cues with the LeBaron coupes and convertibles of the same period, the TC actually has relatively few components that are readily interchangable with those found on other Chrysler products. Certainly almost all body panels and exterior trim items, as well as most of the interior furnishings are unique to the TC. With only 7300 examples made over the three year life of the model, and the availability of new replacement parts from Mopar steadily declining, today's TC owner's major preoccupation is stockpiling items against the inevitable crunch (figuratively speaking). The 1989 models had no airbag, and some minor changes were made for the 1990 models in addition to the new V6 and 16-valve 2.2 engine. Production ended in 1990, due to low sales, though there was a 1991 model year. The asking price of $35,000 was roughly double that of the Chrysler LeBaron convertible, which also came with a turbocharged 2.2 liter engine, albeit without the same level of luxury inside. On the lighter side, the LeBaron’s bodies were apparently less troublesome and better fitted, and easier to find replacement parts for. An invaluable resource for the TC enthusiast is the TC America club, which via a quarterly newsletter and an annual national meet disseminates to a current membership of over 900 arcane tips and information regarding the various quirks and problems peculiar to this special vehicle. TC America's website is located at http://www.chryslertcbymaseraticlub.com Review of the Chrysler TC by Maserati (by Michael Aquino) When they first came out, I had a 1989 16V, which I sold, regretted having sold, so got a 1990 16V, which I had for a long time and enjoyed tremendously. Eventually I sold it too, and ultimately regretted that. I've enjoyed several exotics over the years - Ferraris, Maseratis, Loti, AMGs, Astons, and Cobras - and I firmly believe that the TC is among the very best of the bunch. I know that among the slick-car-magazine crowd it was fashionable to sniff or sneer at the TC as being a "didn't make it" hybrid. To such types I have just shrugged and said, "It's by far the best vehicle that Maserati ever made, and the best sports car that Chrysler ever made; and the only thing it suffered from was a lack of marketing in the USA because most Chrysler dealers didn't know jack about it. It's more comfortable than any Ferrari or Mercedes ever made, it gets much better gas mileage than a Shelby or a Viper, the parts are Chrysler-inexpensive, it's got a nice big trunk, you can see all the gauges clearly, the stereo is perfect, you can see in all directions, the A/C vents are in exactly the right places for passenger comfort, and you don't have to worry about wiggling up steep driveways at an angle as you must in a Testarossa or Countach." That usually brings comments from Maserati purists like, "What? You mean it's better than a Mistral or a Bora or even a 1990 Biturbo Spyder?!" To which I say, "Sure, drive any one of them and then drive a TC, and you'll agree with me. There is no comparison in build quality, comfort, or handling. The 'straight'-Masers' only advantage is in raw horsepower if you're into Stoplight Grand Prixs and speeding tickets. Not to mention that the TC sold new for a fraction of their prices." I had only one complaint with both TCs: Both of my hardtops leaked in the rain, at the right and left corners of the windshield. Neither dealer nor body shop could solve that one! If I had been boss at Chrysler, I would have: (a) continued the TC. (b) trained one salesperson at each dealership to really know this car and the history of Maserati generally. (c) changed it to rear-wheel drive. (d) stuffed the Maserati Shamal engine into it (a DOHC 32-valve twin-turbo V8) to turn it into a real Corvette-eater. (e) fixed that @*^% windshield drip. Maserati is now out from under de Tomaso control and under the wing of Ferrari, which plans to market it through select Ferrari dealerships. That might bring about a renaissance of interest in Maserati generally, including the TC. Converting to a manual transmission (by Hemi Andersen, TC America Tech) The swap from the 3 speed automatic behind the 2.2L Turbo engine in my 1989 Chrysler TC was as a result of my first trip to the TC America convention in 1995. We had to cross Veil Pass in Colorado and were led by a 16 valve TC with the 5 speed transaxle which had no problem with the grade. My TC was a total dog at that altitude and couldn't keep up freeway speed (70 or more) in 3rd gear and was screaming in second as we climbed the long, long grade to 11,000 feet, or whatever it was. I knew it had to make a change. It was probably 1997 before I found a proper donor, an 1989 Dodge Daytona Shelby. It appeared very thrashed in the salvage yard but it was all there. It turned out the transaxle case was broken, but the salvage ward supplied me with a perfect, rebuilt A555 transaxle along with all the large and small parts needed. You need to pick it yourself or specify exactly what you need. Also tell them to save every nut, bolt, washer and clip and whatever they have to remove to get at the larger parts. DON'T USE THE TORCH! I also got the engine controller (SMEC) from that Daytona. That makes a great difference also. (The salvage yard employee pulled the parts.) Because the TC (Q body) was built as a one-of-a-kind model, it was equipped with all the holes needed for clutch cable and shift cables already in place. You merely have to remove the plugs. The parts gathered were all cleaned and inspected. The flywheel was resurfaced and new clutch parts acquired. My drive axles from the automatic were reused as boots and joints were in OK condition. As I operate my own repair shop, the project was divided into 2 weekends. Both days were used each weekend and car was driven home between weekends. Weekend #1 - THIS IS THE TOUGHEST PART BY FAR! Devoted to installing clutch and brake pedals and installing shifter and cables. The TC has an elaborate dash that needs to be completely removed. To begin, battery disconnected, both seats were removed, steering column was removed then the entire dash which is no easy task. (You could merely roll it down with the 2 lower pivot bolts loose but in place, but the dash needs to be supported and the console has to be out of the way first. It's also in the way to get clear access to the pedal brackets) When access is gained to the brake pedal on this model, the brake pedal / arm must to be reused due to the fact that these cars are equipped with the Tevis ABS brake system and the pin, connecting the pushrod to the pedal swing arm, is unique. I therefore cut the pedal pad area to accept the smaller rubber pad from the Daytona brake arm. It is also important to note that the bracket hardware supporting the clutch and brake pedal be installed from the stick shift donor car as there is a clutch up-stop which is required for clutch cable adjustment, and must be retained. Otherwise they appear similar and one might (flatrate) think to only add the clutch pedal. I also removed the entire center console, exposing the automatic shifter mechanism which is bolted to the floor with the exact same bolts as the manual shifter so it is just a matter of exchanging them and feed the shifter cables through the hole that the automatic shift cable goes through. Just use the grommets and retainer for the 2 cables. (I left the automatic shift cable in the car temporarily in order to drive it home for the week) When all this was done, the dashboard is reinstalled (easier said than done) then the console was reinstalled after installing the shifter boot in the console. (There is more to that than 'just' installing the boot, you'll find out) Install the steering column and the seats and the car is ready to drive after reconnecting the battery. (It's still an automatic) Weekend #2 - With the car on the lift, ready to go up. Remove the battery, and all that's in the way in order to remove the automatic transaxle. Now it's just a matter of pulling the automatic out and installing the flywheel, clutch components and the stick shift transaxle. Hook up the shifter and clutch cables, DON'T FORGET to fill the transaxle after installing the axle shafts. Connect all your electrical components and DOUBLE CHECK IT ALL. Hemi Andersen also has a custom engine - built from a late 2.5 liter “common block,” it has the original Maserati-Chrysler 2.2 liter pistons from the 16 valve setup, with Chrysler rods and crank; custom wrist pin bushings were made because of the smaller diameter wrist pins. This engine was created because it was necessary to build an engine using available parts; connecting rod bearings are very difficult to find for the narrower connecting rods commonly found in this engine. The latest technology glass which has been in development for decades is in the Tjaarda PSV. It is 32mm thick, which qualifies for level B4+ armament specifications. The 20” all aluminum wheels are specifically designed engineered and produced by Alcoa for the armored Tjaarda PSV. The forged one piece wheel has the design appearance of a two piece wheel, but the strength of a one piece forged wheel. All PSV wheels have Rodgard Low Profile Run Flat Tire Inserts that have been custom designed for this wheel and this vehicle. Chassis – Multimatic Technical Centre, of Markham, Ontario, Canada, developed a finely tuned chassis with the goal of minimizing the degradation in vehicle dynamics and braking performance caused by the additional weight of the armoring package. Multimatic is a global leader in the engineering, development and manufacture of automotive suspension systems and components, supplying OEM’s and leading motorsports teams, including F-1 race teams, with a full suite of development services and leading edge performance products. Brakes – After reviewing all the leading brake manufacturing companies, two braking systems were identified for testing, Performance Friction Corp (PFC) and Baer were assessed. During extreme testing, the preferred system was PFC. The stopping performance of the PFC system was very impressive, providing the ability achieve near 1g deceleration with no degradation in stopping distance after ten consecutive stops from 60mph. Tires - Numerous tires from all the major manufactures were evaluated and the preferred option is the General ‘Grabber’ 275/55/20 Extra Load. This tire provided the best combination of ride and limit handling performance, and also demonstrated excellent wear characteristics and resilience during repeated handling maneuvers. TESTING Armoring - International Ballistic Armor Standards testing was done at various private and National Laboratories, including Oregon Ballistic Laborites, LLC of Salem, Oregon, USA. The following established armor standards were used: • National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Standard 0108.01 • European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Standard EN 1063 • Oregon Ballistic Laborites (OBL) Test Standards Additionally, various armoring companies, material suppliers and test facilities were used to verify armoring products used in the PSV. The attained goal of the armor solution on the PSV is to defeat the highest commercial threat level using a non-armor piercing round. This equates to a Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) Soft Lead Core (SC) Rifle round having a caliber of 7.62 x 51 mm (U.S. Military designation M80). The round has a nominal mass of 9.7 grams and is traveling at a nominal speed of 838 meters/second or 2,750 feet/second. This particular threat level is covered under the NIJ Standard 0108.01 Level III and the CEN Standard EN 1063 Level BR6 for armor. The Isoclima S.p.A. independent testing of their armored glass products was verified and used as a baseline for the protection afforded by their products. Vehicle Chassis - PSV test vehicles were sent to the GM Desert Proving Ground in Mesa Arizona for complete testing and development tuning. At the GM proving ground, the assessment and tuning of ride, steering, handling and braking characteristics were carried out primarily using subjective methods with frequent objective verification of the limit handling performance. The handling performance was measured during three maneuvers: constant radius test (200 ft radius), slalom course with 80ft cone spacing and a double lane change maneuver. The lane change is negotiated in a closed throttle condition, the throttle being released as the entry cone is passed. The vehicle was fitted with a comprehensive instrumentation package allowing the measurement of various parameters including: · Steering wheel torque and angle · Lateral acceleration · Longitudinal acceleration · Body slip angle · Yaw rate · Body roll angle In addition to measuring the PSV development prototype, a production Cadillac Escalade, which is of similar size and engine performance, was also instrumented and measured through the same maneuvers with both the OE 18” wheel/tire package and the PSV 275/55/20 tires. Braking performance was evaluated subjectively for pedal feel, and the deceleration and stopping distances were measured. Resistance to brake fade was tested using ten consecutive 60mph-0 tests. This fade test is known as the ‘AMS test’ due to it being used by the German auto magazine ‘Auto Motor und Sport’ as part of their road testing protocol. It has subsequently become an accepted industry standard test method. ABS system compatibility was confirmed by testing on high, medium and low friction coefficients (‘mu’) surfaces. Handling - The target for the ‘everyday’ levels of handling performance was to mask the additional mass and increase in CofG height during the normal road driving lateral acceleration envelope (typically below 0.5 g). Objectively these characteristics are somewhat reflected at the fundamental level by the linear range understeer and suspension roll gradients. Subjectively, the PSV prototype performance was perceived by passengers as being ‘more sporty’ than the baseline Escalade (which has similar suspension specifications to the PSV prototype vehicle). This was largely due to the reduced roll rate of the PSV achieved via the revised spring and stabilizer bar package and increased levels of damping from the retuned shock absorbers. The additional cornering stiffness of the chosen tire compared to that of the OE tire also helped the rear axle cornering confidence. Overall the resulting low to mid ‘g’ handling proved to be very confidence inspiring. In terms of the limit handling, the PSV was tuned to display progressive understeer during steady state cornering and to provide acceptable transient stability during the slalom and lane change.
