You are bidding on a 1933 Plymouth 5 Window coupe dirt track race car. I purchased this car out of Kansas over 10 years ago. This is a very original untouched dirt track racer. Has Ford Y-block motor. Motor was last run before car went into storage. This would make a nice car for a vintage/nostalgia racing league. Would be a good start for someone who is looking to run a nostalgia car. Cars like these are getting hard to find. Car has a full roll cage. The passenger door opens up, not sure if the driver's side opens or not. Please view the pictures for a better description. This car is being listed as local pick up only at this time. However, I am willing to ship at buyer's expense. Please send a message if you are interested in shipping. I have these listed for sale locally and I have the right to end the auction early for a local sale. Please view my other listings for other vintage car parts that I have for sale.

If you watch World of Outlaws, you probably recognize this TNT Dirt Super Late Model. With only a handful of races on it, a fresh all-aluminum Chevy V8, and a ton of upgrades, it\'s a turn-key racer that\'s ready to weigh-in immediately. Usually when you buy someone else\'s race car, you get a tired machine that\'s seen better days but that\'s definitely not the case here. This car was last raced in 2009 after receiving extensive updates, and has seen only 25 outings since it was built in 2007. The body is entirely new, with a Dominator nose and fenders, ostensibly to replicate an Impala SS. Finish work is race-car typical, meaning it\'s entirely functional, and it wears a set of sponsor decals that certainly look the part. I won\'t bore you with details of its appearance, because if you know Outlaws, you know that these cars are built for abuse and being pretty isn\'t a priority, but the bottom line is that this one was recently disassembled, checked, cleaned, painted, and completely refurbished to make it race-ready. Under the skin, it\'s a 2007 TNT chromoly tube chassis with 2009 updates on the front and rear. The interior is spartan, that\'s for sure, but nobody\'s building race cars to be pretty. There\'s a new Longacre tach, a full array of gauges with warning lights, and fresh shifters for the Bert ball spline transmission. The front suspension tall TNT spindles and fresh Genesis shocks, while out back there\'s a Tiger rear with Circle Track dynamic hubs for maximum durability. It\'s ready to rock. The engine is a 700+ horsepower all-aluminum 18-degree 358 cubic inch Chevy built by Clements Automotive and recently refreshed with new rings, bearings, and gaskets. A 5-stage dry-sump oiling system keeps it healthy under all conditions, and a Willys carburetor tuned expressly for this engine has been fitted. Up front, a new double-pass radiator easily handles the cooling chores and all the plumbing is race-grade braided stainless with AN fittings. These snarling little beats can rev to more than 8000 RPM and sound amazing doing so, and this one is fitted with an MSD ignition with a dizzying 8600 RPM limiter chip in it. The wheels are 14-inch Weld wide fives with five-inch offsets wearing fresh American Racer tires, 53s up front and 56s in back. This car is fully sorted and ready to race today without anything but fuel and a driver. It has been on jackstands since 2009, with a thorough rebuild that addressed all the major systems and gave it a fresh cosmetic look. The frame has new paint, the engine has 0 hours on the rebuild, and all the important components have been checked for safety. This car is also a feature winner, not an also-ran, so you can be competitive right off the trailer. If you\'ve been looking for a way to have a ton of fun in the dirt, look no further and call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom. For more information, please call (678) 279-1609 or toll free (877) 367-1835. Ad provided by OldCarOnline.com/cond>

[email protected] 5527 Lakeview Road, Charlotte, NC, 28269, US 1980 Toyota PPI Trophy Truck 015 Restored & Ready To Race Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Baja 500/1000 Trophy Truck Year: 1980 Type of vehicle title: Clear Primary color: Black Mileage: 27 Transmission type: 5 Speed Automatic Engine: 302 V8 Interior color: Vehicle Info In 1983, Toyota joined forces with Precision Preparation, Inc. (PPI) in an effort to diversify their motorsports portfolio. This partnership lead to, among other successes, an off-road racing team that dominated the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Stadium Series while accumulating 27 wins and seven championships in the SCORE Desert Series. Though the team was comprised of many talented hands, legendary off-road racer Ivan "Ironman" Stewart stole the spotlight. A 2006 inductee in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame, Stewart earned his nickname by completing entire desert races without a navigator or relief driver. His efforts lead to several records including most all-time MTEG wins (17) and most Baja 500 wins (17). For 17 years, PPI and Stewart ruled the intensely competitive world of off-road racing, even taking first at the 1998 Baja 1000. That victory, along with four Baja 500's were accomplished using chassis number 015. Built in 1993 to replace PPI's aging 010 chassis, the 015 would become the Master's thesis and, ultimately, final product of a remarkably successful off-road team. Fresh out of an extensive restoration performed by the very hands that built it originally, RK Motors Charlotte is proud to offer the once in a lifetime opportunity to own one of Baja's most famed competition vehicles. At the core of this truck is an aluminum 302 cubic inch V8. Loosely based on the 1UZ-FE Lexus engine. The race version retains the DOHC/four-valve configuration but little else. Though the component list features familiar names such as JE Pistons and Carrillo Rods, every internal part has been custom built to PPI's specifications. Fuel is pulled from a custom 42 gallon fuel cell and distributed by eight EFI throttle bodies controlled by a Weber/Redline ECU. With a 13:1 compression ratio, the mill is good for over 550hp with a flat torque range from 4,000 to 7,500 rpm. Exhaust is channeled through a tuned stainless steel Borla system with USFS-approved spark arrestors. At idle, the truck is surprisingly quiet but a quick blip of the throttle ensures this is a purebred racer. Backing the aluminum powerplant is a custom PPI transaxle utilizing a 5-speed Hewland VGC 200 gear selection box often seen in GTP racing. With a vehicle capable of doing in excess of 135mph across the dunes, the suspension had to be tough. The front and rear both utilize a double A-arm setup featuring PPI coil overs with internal position sensitive shocks that can be tuned for compression and rebound. Only the rate of the Eibach springs varies between the two ends. The setup is good for a total of 22 inches of travel, making small jumps a simple matter. When the desert roads wind, steering is kept light thanks to a PPI V2 power rack and pinion with ram assist. This setup feels more natural to turn at low speeds than many of the smaller race cars we've seen. Braking power is distributed to a four wheel disc setup utilizing PPI rotors, Brembo calipers and a Tilton master cylinder. The whole setup rides on sturdy PPI custom 17" x "7 48-bolt beadlock wheels wrapped in tall BF Goodrich 37" x 17" T/A KR's. Inside, the driver is placed in the center of a hand fabricated aluminum chassis. Despite the middle seat configuration, control layout is familiar with all instrumentation directly in front of the driver and the gear selector positioned to the right. The left hand side of the dash is dominated by toggle switches that control the twelve Hella HID spotlights used to illuminate the desert at night. The right side contains switches for the ignition, fuel pump, fans and other traditional pieces most enthusiasts are familiar with. Overall, the interior is far less restrictive than most race vehicles with plenty of room on either side of the seat. The seat itself is a heavily padded Mastercraft piece with a Simpson four-point harness keeping the driver in place during tough landings. With such long stretches of track performed at once, the driver has to be prepared for anything. The truck is well supplied with a tool kit, Maglite, and hydration system all within arms reach. With the exception of additional lighting, the trucks carbon/kevlar shell has been restored to its appearance at the Baja 2000. For that race, Ivan Stewart was paired with fellow off-road icon Larry Roeseler who drove the second leg of the race. Both names are featured on the #11 number tag behind the cab. Though the composite body has seen a few different paint schemes, this one is an accurate representation of the truck's final competition appearance. All paint and bodywork was performed by former PPI employee Chris Hukill of Hukill Paint and Graphics. As noted earlier, the extensive restoration of this truck to race ready form was performed at TM1 Motorsports by many of the hands that originally built the truck at PPI. The build was watched closely by off-road racing fans and extensively documented by both RK Motors Charlotte and TM1 Motorsports. There are countless pictures of the overall build as well as videos of the freshly rebuilt engine cutting its teeth on the dynometer. The final product was shot by Dirt Sports Magazine as part of their "Masterpiece in Metal" series before being tested in Barstow by the Ironman himself. That testing session plus the full back-story of the truck are covered in a detailed video produced to celebrate the restoration Also Included in the sale are irreplaceable items such as the original chassis blueprints, along with a treasure trove of new replacement parts including: 5 quarter panels2 fenders4 cab sides 1 hood1 roof1 brush guard8 sets of bead locks for wheels5 mounted wheels49 unmounted wheels7 boxes of assorted parts If you want to enter a vintage event or even the Baja 1000, go in with confidence. If you break something, there is very likely a replacement within this collection. Motorsports enthusiasts would likely agree that it's difficult to look at this truck without envisioning it airborne and covered in dust, with the Ironman at the wheel. Built and driven by the best, 015 is a truly significant piece of off-road history worthy of anchoring any collection. In the days of pre-fab racers, hand built masterpieces like this are becoming increasingly more valuable. We submit that this is arguably the most significant truck in the history of off-road racing. To own such a piece of history is a once in a lifetime opportunity-don't wait! About This Auction Please note that all sales are binding and final. This is exactly why we created the RKM Performance Center. Being proud members of SEMA, ARMO, HRIA and the North Carolina Motorsports Association, the RKM Performance Center is a nationally recognized shop; best known for high level OEM restorations and custom builds. Every curve, relief, and molding is as the factory did it. The deck lid is fiberglass, and is the only non-metal body part on the whole car. The pointed nose is beautifully fabricated from scratch, using aluminum and stainless steel to create a unique beak for this incredible car that’s both traditional and all-new. The rest of the nose, including the hood sides, top, and fairings along the chassis are hand-formed aluminum for minimum weight and punched full of louvers to both help with cooling and to allow the air to pass around and through the car as easily as possible. Gunslinger wears a spectacular black paint job, and there is not a single ripple, wave, or patch of orange peel anywhere on the car. Suggesting a huge amount of time was invested in getting all that hand-fabricated bodywork super straight. It’s got an old-school vibe with leather windlace between the panels, and quick-release fasteners hold all of the fairings in place, so you can have almost instant access to any of the car’s mechanicals. All fits together exquisitely well. The whole idea behind Gunslinger was to merge the design ethos of the classic Model T track roadster with craftsmanship that borders on art without losing sight of tradition. Deitz headlights perched on their own beautiful little stands, the chrome windshield stanchions holding a beautifully shaped cut-down windshield that actually does work to keep things pleasant inside, and the ’39 Ford taillights that are as minimalist as you can get without losing all sense of style. Then there are the functional bits like the scoop under the nose that actually force-feeds cool air into the radiator, the cool reverse scoops in the side panels that look like the exhaust ports on a Mustang P51 fighter plane but actually add clearance for the headers, and the exposed steering mechanism that’s the essence of simplicity. Out back, there are neat little push bars that replicate those used on salt flats racers for decades, and while they probably don’t offer much protection, they do give it a finished look. The interior is again a nod to the past, with distressed-looking gray/green leather that might have been weathered by the sun and elements back in the ‘50s. It’s nicely fitted to a fresh bench seat that’s contoured just right so even real-sized human beings can fit behind the wheel and enjoy the drive. Pleated door panels use brass rifle bolts as door latch handles and check straps for a vintage look and there are carpets on the floor, which definitely help control noise and heat. The trunk is outfitted with a modern fuel cell for safety and aircraft-quality fuel lines feeding the small block V8 up front. Gunslinger is fitted with a ZZ3 Chevrolet 350 cubic inch V8 with aluminum heads and a wicked Comp Cams “Mother Thumper” roller camshaft inside and a big Demon carburetor on top. With more than 400 horsepower on tap and a full-race idle that cackles and snorts, this car sounds like a predator. This much horsepower in a package that weighs perhaps 1700 pounds is shockingly fast and in the first two gears, anything more than half throttle will result in massive wheel spin and a cacophony of exhaust pulses. The Muncie 4-speed manual gearbox has the right ratios to make the most of the engine’s minimal inertia and it’s a joy to bang it through the gears in fury, as the car seems to beg for more every time you punch a shift. The exhaust system was completely hand-fabricated with special “noise boxes” and mufflers to create just the right sound. The front suspension is traditional hot rod fare, with a dropped I-beam axle, hairpin trailing arms, and stubby shocks, but it’s set up right so it’s not twitchy at speed and tracks like a cruise missile on the highway. In back, it’s a little different, offering a vintage independent suspension, and with drum brakes on either end it’s got to be from a ’63 or ’64 ‘Vette. Gunslinger sits on 1937 Ford “wide five” artillery wheels, fully restored and powdercoated black and shod with big-n-little Firestone dirt track tires that give it the perfect stance. This rowdy looking T Roadster is a phenomenon and simply a work of art on steroids. Collector car financing available at competitive rates. 1935 Ford Coupe This car is a very unique street rod that has the nostalgia look of the 50-60's era dirt modified jalopy's. They were the standard at all the tracks in many parts of the country at that time. This car was professionally built as a street rod with race car nostalgia look. The body is an original Ford steel body with factory hinged doors, hood and deck lid. The windshield still cranks out and all the windows have glass with a working windshield wiper. It has modern wiring and electronics with halogen head lamps, LED tail lamps, turn signals and a working horn. The paint has been touched up in a couple places but still looks good as a whole. The number decals will come off if you don't like the race car look but I think they give the car character. The chassis is built with late model race car technology for a solid ride and will stop on a dime as they say. It has a ford 9 inch with a an adjustable four link and adjustable coil over shocks. The front end is fully independent suspension with adjustable aluminum coil over shocks. The rack and pinion come from Sweet Mfg. with tubular control arms. It has Quick Track wide five full floating hubs with big vented disc brakes at all four corners. The wheels are new Basset chrome dirt late model wheels that I ordered not long ago. The Hoosier tires are also new within the last year and only have about 200 miles on them. The engine is a mildly built 351 Cleveland done by a professional. It has a hot rod lope, but is real throaty when idling that gets a lot of attention. It starts easily and runs smooth with a low mellow rumble with the full length headers and tuned exhaust. The trans mission is a C-4 that shifts flawlessly but will drip slightly if the car is left setting for long periods of time. The radiator is a new walker radiator with electric fan built for this car and a modern V-8 engine. No heating problems in the least. The interior is race car style with easily read instrumentation and chassis works control panel. The steering wheel comes off for easy entry and also has lap belts for security. It has Kirkey racing seats with removable inserts and a mounted fire extinguisher for looks and safety. It has a heater and air conditioner unit hidden under the front seat but has never been hooked up. The car is easy to see out of with interior rear view mirror and outside mirrors. The trunk lid is on the original hinges and the turning handle fastens it securely. It has a spun aluminum tank in the trunk and the battery is securely mounted close by. This car is a very reliable, attention getting street rod that isn't the "cookie cutter" variety you get used to seeing at the shows. When I have taken it shows the old guys say it brings back a lot of memories and the young guys want to know if I have ever hot lapped it. I am almost 70 years old, so the hot lapping is out for sure. If you want to be in a ride that gets the looks, this is it. I have described the car as honestly as I can and what you see is what you get. A $500 deposit is required within 48 hours to pay pal should the reserve be met and the car won't be released until the appropriate funds are in my account. The car is for sale locally, can be sold any time. Call Jim 316-259-6706

Hello, I hate to do this but it's finally time to sell my pride and joy that I have owned for over 8 years. This description is going to get a little long but please read entire description carefully. I have a 1996 Pontiac Trans Am WS6 for sale. The car is in excellent condition and is probably one of the best of this era you will ever find! Only around 62,000 original miles for a 1996! The car is insured through Hagerty insurance for $25,000 and was recently appraised for $27,000. There is over $30,000 invested into this car. Car can run 12's at over 110 mph. with no trouble and made over 440HP TO THE REAR WHEELS. Blower goes from 8-24 psi and is only at 8 now. With a build motor this car is capable of over 1,000 hp. The car has every option, all power, I am the 4th owner and the previous owner basically restored the entire car from top to bottom with no expense spared. Car has zero rust, bondo, cracks, dents, or chips. Every interior clip and panel was replaced new from gm. The car has very subtle ghost flames on the hood that were added when the car was repainted with a $5,500 dollar paint job with original dupont base coat and dupont hyper clear which is very hard to scratch. The underside of this car is so clean you can eat off it, not matter where you look there is no leaks or dust or dirt at all. Everything is powdercoated and base/clear. Car has never seen, snow, rain, cold weather, major highways, smoking, always stored inside. Interior is near perfect down to the original floor mats with gm logos. The rear spoiler and rear tail lights ect. have been upgraded to 98-02 ones which really improve the look of the car. Here are the mods that were done to the car when I purchased it 8 years ago: These mods only have about 7,500 miles on them!!! Engine: -MSD 6AL ignition box set at 6,000 rpm rev. limiter with the gm limiter turned off (hidden, not stupid looking like other cars) -MSD blaster coil custom mounted near the blower -MSD 8.5 mm superconductor wires (don't touch headers) -MSD optispark with brass rotor kit -NGK TR6 plugs -Smooth mass airflow ends and de-screened the mass airflow sensor -CSI electric water pump conversion -Borla 3" adjustable exhaust STAINLESS STEEL with lifetime warranty $1,500 -LT4 knock module -Aeromotive adj. fuel pressure regulator -58 mm. holley throttlebody and ported and custom painted intake to match -Throttle body by-pass installed -Jet hot long tube headers with (2) o2 bungs with sensor extenders with ultra seal gaskets and locking header bolts (ceramic coated lifetime warranty) -Jet hot y-pipe with no cats and no 02 bungs with ultra seal collector gaskets and stainless bolts (ceramic coated lifetime warranty) -3" stainless steel clamps on exhaust -Air pump and egr block off kit -Spec stage 3 clutch with ceramic/kevlar disk to 680 ft. lbs. holds to 750 hp (resurfaced flywheel) -42.5 pound injectors from an ls1 car -D-1SC stage 2 ATI Procharger Supercharger, 8lb pulley, Dual high flow intercoolers, 12 rib belt, all oil is self contained, no oil lines to mess with. The following are things I have done to the car in the last 8 years I have owned it: -new fan motors and rewired fans to hidden switches under dash (due to the retune and the blower is is required to override fans with switch to keep car cooler, works great, no big deal) -always changed oil with royal purple synthetic and premium filter and used stabil for winter storage and injector cleaner when car came out -replace headlight module with a used one -new driver and passenger window motors -replaced coolant level sensor -car has monsoon stereo and I installed a double din direct fit pioneer cd player with remote and case (have original monsoon radio but cd player does not work in it) (Pioneer is in car now, the pic was taken when stock deck was still in car) -changed spark plugs with NGK TR6's -changed both 02 sensors -custom painted brake calipers -changed fuel filter -replaced header gaskets, and collector gaskets and bolts -installed a casper fuel pump wire harness upgrade -installed a SLP line lock brake control kit -changed oil in supercharger and supercharger belt (just for maint. purposes) -installed a vortex t-rex inline fuel pump for better fuel pressure -installed a red top optima battery -replaced coolant overflow bottle and battery tray and cap -replaced throttle body elbow and all vacume caps and plugs -replaced throttle position sensor -replace idle air control valve -less then 2 years ago I replaced the MSD box because the other one went bad -also less then 2 years ago the serp belt, a/c compressor, expansion valve, and dryer were all replaced and system was vacummed down and recharged Extras: I am not done yet as I have plenty of extras to go with the car. -2 sets of keys with remotes -extra supercharger oil and a belt ($200.00) -a $400.00 custom fit car cover with plastic bin to keep it in in the summer when it's off -original 17" ws6 wheels in mint condition with the original good year tires with about 60% tread left (people pay $500-$1,000 for these as they are rare) -2 16" z28 wheels with hoosier street legal slicks for going to the track (they have almost no use on them and I paid $500.00 for wheels and tires) -original owners manual -a complete set of factory service manuals -tons of brochures and flyers and ads and articles about the trans. am ws6 (all come with the car) -THIS CAR IS FULLY DOCUMENTED WITH 2 BINDERS FULL OF RECEIPTS AND RECORDS OF EVERYTHING THAT HAS BEEN DONE WITH ORIGINAL INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS AND EVERYTHING -Title is free and clear with no liens or anything!!! Now for the negatives: The only thing I can say bad about this car is it does show some signs or wear here and there as it is a used car such as a little wear on the drivers seat bolster and the fuel gauge does not work. This is common and I just never got around to fixing it. I use the odometer to know when I need to fuel up. Always run premium fuel only! Please serious buyers only. I am not here to play games!!! I am a honest person and I expect the same from you! Car must be payed for in full within 7 days of auction end and must be picked up within 10 days of auction end. Cash in hand or certified bank check only! We WILL go to bank together to do title and to make sure funds are legit! I am not willing to ship this car. You must come pick it up, drive it away, trailer it away, pay a company to trailer it, whatever! Sorry, no trades!!! This car was built right and reliable, not all chopped up, it has a "safe" tune for the street and is a nice car to take to the track or a local car show. Has won awards at several shows. I have this car for sale locally so I reserve the right to take it down at any moment if reserve is not met. There will be no test drives until payment is received. You can however come take a look at it and hear it run. This is a collector/race car and not a toy!!! If you have any questions you can call Joe at 330-501-0247 No texts or emails will be answered, this weeds out spam, I want to speak to you, sorry!!! Car is located in Youngstown, Ohio 1 hr. from Clev. Ohio or Pittsburgh Pa. Thanks!!!

All trims (except the SRT8) are powered by a 290-hp 3.6-liter V6 paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. The V6 can be upgraded to a 360-hp 5.7-liter V8 Hemi engine matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. The SRT8 trim features an exclusive 465-hp 6.4-liter V8 Hemi engine and a five-speed automatic transmission, with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Both V8 engines feature a Multi-Displacement System (MDS), which seamlessly deactivates four of the eight cylinders depending on engine operating conditions. Adaptive cruise control, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated leather seats, heated steering wheel, power liftgate, rear seat DVD entertainment system, rear parking camera, a multimedia infotainment system with 30-gigabyte hard drive navigation system, and UConnect wireless connectivity are available. The optional (standard on the Overland) QuadraLift air suspension features full time four corner load leveling and improved off-road performance by increasing ground clearance. Standard safety features include front six airbags, electronic stability control, active font head restraints, brake assist, and tire pressure monitoring. For 2012, a new SRT8 trim has been added, featuring a 392 cubic-inch V8 engine, unique front and rear fascias, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, Brembo brakes, and real carbon fiber interior accents. Also a new six-speed automatic replaces the previous five-speed automatic when paired with the 5.7-litre V8 engine. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComIntroductionThe Jeep Grand Cherokee has very good road manners, five-passenger capacity, more cargo room than its predecessor and, if properly optioned, can be taken off the highway. Grand Cherokee was thoroughly redesigned for 2011. For 2012, Jeep has made a few notable changes, brought back the SRT8 high-performance model, and added an Overland Summit to the top of the luxury range. 2012 Grand Cherokee models also get changes in packaging and pricing. While the least-expensive version appears about $3,000 less than last year's base model, it isn't really because it doesn't include power seats and other features that were standard for 2011. Every 2012 Grand Cherokee above the base model has seen a price increase. Jeep Grand Cherokee continues to evolve toward luxury wagon and away from the utility vehicles that made the name famous. Many Grand Cherokee models come with piped leather, and the list of features includes a heated, power tilt-telescope steering column, ventilated front seats, and collision warning system. Two-wheel drive is standard across the board. Four-wheel drive, low-range gearing, and a full-size spare tire required for genuine off-road activities are optional. And while you can get tow hooks, they're optional on most and chrome plated on the top of the line. A variety of all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive systems and suspension arrangements are available. A 3.6-liter V6 engine is standard and more than sufficient for anything but heavy towing. For that, they offer a 5.7-liter V8. A 5-speed automatic goes with the V6, and mileage has improved slightly for 2012. The Grand Cherokee interior is stylish and made with high-quality materials. The luxurious Overland Summit model is as stitched-and-piped as any Chrysler and similarly expensive. The 60/40 rear seats recline for comfort, enabling passengers to look up at the sky through the optional panoramic sunroof that extends over both rows of seats; and the front seat folds flat for kayaks or two-by-fours. The styling of the Grand Cherokee is uptown, with a sloped windshield and backlight, sculpted sides, and clean lines everywhere. The development of the Grand Cherokee goes back far enough that it paralleled the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. If there's a safety feature you want that isn't standard you can probably get it as an option. The Jeep Grand Cherokee competes against a spectrum of vehicles including four-wheel drives, including the Land Rover LR4, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Toyota 4Runner and Land Cruiser, any number of mid-size crossovers and niche models, and with the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition. The 2012 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a street bruiser performance wagon like the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5 and X6 and Mercedes-Benz AMG utilities. It's the fastest, most expensive, thirstiest Grand Cherokee, and the last one you want to take to a trail. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComWalkaroundEvery inch of sheetmetal was new for 2011, although it's still quite easy to identify as a Grand Cherokee. Although fancier versions have more liberal chrome and polish (except for the SRT8) the basic shape has sufficient character that we prefer the simpler entry model appearance. The lines are more fluid than before, and are 8.5 percent more aerodynamic, with a Cd of 0.37, lowered from 0.40 after 250 hours in the wind tunnel. (Note aerodynamic resistance also includes frontal area, so the taller, wider Jeep will not be as sleek as a typical car.) This brings better economy, with less wind noise. It has a wider stance and shorter nose with less front overhang, giving it a subtle look of substance. And it definitely has substance. This latest generation, starting with the 2011 models, is wider and longer, but most of the added length comes between the wheels for better handling and more interior space. The seven-slot chrome grille is defined by six chrome slats over the black slots, while the headlamps sweep like winglets out from the top corners. Smooth frontal fascia with black airdam, recessed to lessen drag, and tidy small foglamps in trapezoid pockets. Aerodynamic bellypans run the full length of the chassis, chasing fuel mileage. The sides have big rectangular concave sculpting, as if it's a place where Jeep meets BMW, and slightly trapezoidal wheel arches, a distinctive if still subtle touch. The side glass is straight and unaffected, with black B pillars, darkly tinted glass and bright trim. Jeep says the rear styling gives a nod to the 1963 Wagoneer that started it all, and it's true (although we wonder how many besides us will remember Mom's '63 Wagoneer in high school that we snuck to the drag strip in the next state, one Sunday afternoon, and ripped off crowd-pleasing 4-wheel-drive holeshots). The backlight balances the slope of the windshield, although, retro touch notwithstanding, the entire rear view looks like that of a thousand other full-size SUVs. That's because function rules, as it should; when SUV rear-end styling gets fancy, visibility is often lost. The taillamps are big and extend into the liftgate, with four backup lights whose beams improve the video view of the rear back-up camera, a detail where some cars are lacking. There's an aerodynamic body-colored spoiler, level with the roof and over the sloped liftgate, and it looks good. We also like the flipper glass window in the liftgate, which has a convenient opening handle. The vehicle locks with the press of a button on the door handle, as at the tailgate. The body-colored parts in the Laredo (mirrors, door handles, ding strip) look better than the chrome trim on the upscale Overland, whose 20-inch wheels with five thick spokes just look big and bright and unimaginative. Far more Jeeps will be Laredo models (65 percent, expects Jeep) with 17- or 18-inch wheels, which look better. The SRT8 model has unique touches from the window-line down. A painted grille is flanked by bi-xenon headlamps and LED running lights, while a gaping maw below the bumper feeds cooling air to engine and brakes. The bulging hood has a pair of air extractors forward and you needn't worry about rain or snow given the copious amounts of hot air generated below. Clean wheel arches help cover foot-wide tires and menacing wheels, while extended rocker panels channel air and runoff. A deep rear bumper and substantial exhaust ports highlight the rear end. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComDriving ImpressionWe've driven several versions of the Grand Cherokee and came away most impressed with the Laredo X with the V6 engine. The Overland with the Hemi V8, with its teen fuel economy and base price of more than $43,000 with 4WD and before options, would have been more of a hit in 2006. About the only thing you'd need that big Hemi for is its 390 pound-feet of torque for towing more than 5000 pounds beyond rolling hills (maximum is 7200 pounds with 4WD, 7400 with 2WD). And for that, the Grand Cherokee would not be our first choice. Compared with the Laredo V6, the Overland V8 ride is firmer on 20-inch tires, steering is heavier and less responsive on the highway, and the chrome trim detracts from the cleanliness of the styling. Plus, ours had a vibration we felt in the small of our back while accelerating in second-gear Sport mode. That's the only time it appeared, but it wasn't our imagination, our passenger felt it, too. We can't say what it means, but it shouldn't be there. There are two automatic transmissions with manual modes. The unit matched to the V6 is called a five-speed and, like most, offers a single overdrive. It is calibrated for fuel economy (up one city mpg on 2WD and one highway on all-wheel drive for 2012). As a result it is quick to upshift and frequently kicks down out of overdrive, so in rolling terrain or varying traffic we often shifted ourselves. For the 5.7-liter V8 it's now called a six-speed automatic, but it has the same gears in it as last year's five-speed. Confused? The old five-speed automatic had two different ratios for second gear, a 1.67:1 as it up-shifted and a 1.50:1 as it down-shifted. Now that you can (for 2012) manually select either one Jeep is calling it a six-speed automatic, but we're calling that marketing; a real six-speed automatic has benefits in performance that this one won't. The 5.7 V8 does offer two overdrives and lopes down the highway but its highway economy is matched by some midivan city ratings. Though heavy, the chassis is quite rigid, one key to the feel of overall quality. When you combine a rigid chassis with a well-executed independent suspension, the result is a vehicle that feels like a Mercedes. In fact, design of the Grand Cherokee began in Germany years ago, when Chrysler was still Daimler-Chrysler, and some components are shared with the Mercedes M-Class SUV. We put our Grand Cherokee Laredo through the paces, on patchy San Francisco freeways, city streets, and through some curves on the Pacific Coast Highway, and the vehicle knocked off each challenge with ease, comfort and control. We were highly impressed with the chassis and suspension. The Laredo base model has near-ideal weight balance front to rear, and its among the nicest to drive. You'll hear Chrysler say in their marketing that quality craftsmanship has returned to the Pentastar, and the Grand Cherokee backs up the boast. The chief engineer for the Grand Cherokee worked with the Mercedes engineers in Stuttgart to gain ideas for the architecture and suspension geometry. Then the Grand Cherokee went through more final testing than was done in the past to refine the vehicle to as close as perfect as they could get it. Despite the new model's added width and wheelbase, the turning circle remains at the same 37.1 feet as the old Grand Cherokee. This is better than the same-size M-Class or most seven-seat utes, and within inches of the 4WD seven-seat Land Rover LR4 and many minivans. On or off the highway the Jeep is maneuverable, though the ever-rounder bodywork makes it more difficult to see corners on the trail. For 2012, the V6 adopts electro-hydraulic power steering, usually an aid to fuel economy, and it has not compromised steering feel at all. The V6 is a double-overhead cam 3.6-liter with variable valve timing, making 290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, delivering an EPA-estimated 17 city and 23 highway miles per gallon with 2WD, or 16/22 mpg with 4WD. A huge fuel tank (24.6 gallons) allows a range of 500 miles. The V6 engine feels like a winner, silky smooth and powerful. The horsepower is welcome but a shortage of torque is why it shifts out of overdrive a lot. We went to an off-road course during our one-day drive, and, needless to say, the Jeep was fairly dazzling. We climbed over rocks and through gulleys and crept down radically steep hillsides, terrain far more challenging than owners will want to put their pretty new Grand Cherokees through. The Jeeps we drove were equipped with the optional Quadra-Lift air suspension that adds up to 4.1 inches of lift, using controls on the console. There are five settings: Normal ride height, with 8.1 inches of ground clearance; Off-road 1, with 9.4 inches; Off-road 2, with 10.7 inches; Park, which lowers the vehicle to 6.6 inches for loading and unloading; and Aero, at 7.5 inches, for freeway driving and better fuel economy. An important note here that the air suspension and low-range four-wheel drive are not available on the $29,000 base all-wheel drive; plan on spending nearly $40,000 minimum for that level of trail ability. The all-wheel-drive system on base models is meant for mild off-road use and inclement weather; low-range gearing is available as an option on that model, standard on V8s. On the off-road course, Selec-Terrain electronically coordinates 12 different powertrain, braking and suspension systems, including throttle control, transmission shift, transfer case, traction control, and electronic stability control. What this means is that a monkey could have driven the Jeep over these terrain challenges. The computers did it all. For example, down the dizzying steep dirt trail, with hill descent control, all we did was keep the steering wheel straight, using no feet at all; the car's computers did it all. And all we did to get over the rocks was gently apply the gas, and wait until the sensors made adjustments to allow the slipping wheels to find their traction. Where a dead battery in the original Jeep was merely an inconvenience it will render this one a fancy umbrella. The SRT8 uses a 6.4-liter V8 like that in the Challenger 392 and other rear-drive SRT sedans. With 470 horsepower, 465 lb-ft of torque, a crisp-shifting automatic, full-time all-wheel drive and foot-wide sticky tires it goes quickly. Acceleration lifts the bow and braking brings some nosedive, both tradeoffs for the solid roll control to keep the big, 5200-pound box stable. Don't even think of driving it off road. Virtually every component that affects performance, be it bodywork, cabin pieces, electronic or mechanical is addressed by SRT, resulting in a package that isn't overpowered, underbraked or unable to use its power. On the contrary, the SRT8 likes to be pitched into a turn where it takes a set and you simply stand on the gas and let the all-wheel drive sort out the traction; the dynamics are impressive at this price. Like BMW's X5M and Mercedes' AMG M-Class not to mention the Porsche Cayenne, the Grand Cherokee SRT8 proves a utility vehicle can make good time on the pavement. Like most other 2012 SRT products the Grand Cherokee gets adaptive dampers from Bilstein, meaning a choice of Touring comfort, which is fine even for unknown winding road, and Sport, in which things are buttoned up tighter. If your race car tends to break down and you want to keep running for the weekend, this might be the best way to tow the race car to and from the track. Just use your tow vehicle as your back-up race car. And since we complained at the introduction of the last Grand Cherokee SRT8 that center exhaust outlets are useless for towing they now are at the sides where they belong. Clearly, they were listening to us. Of course the SRT8 carries penalties typical of super-sport utility vehicles. Gas mileage is usually closer to the EPA city rating of 12, and the tires, easily used up making a heavy truck work like a sports car, are more than $440 each. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorNo Jeep has ever felt this high-quality inside (especially when it gets rolling). The interior was totally redesigned for 2011, headlined by four more inches of legroom in the rear seat, with 19 percent more cargo space. The Grand Cherokee would make a good family vacation vehicle. A fold-flat front seat is standard, adding to the 68.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats flat. The rear seats recline 18 degrees, and with the added legroom, life is easy back there. There's also an abundance of storage pockets and bins, including two bins under the cargo floor. A new rear suspension allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle under the cargo floor, as opposed to underneath it. The front door openings are 2 inches wider and 2 inches higher, and the rear doors open 78 degrees compared to 67 degrees on the previous (pre-2011) model. That increased convenience is just one of the many details that made the 2011 Grand Cherokee such an improvement. We found the leather seats in our Laredo X test model to be just right, almost sigh-inducing, with excellent bolstering, not to mention total adjustability with lumbar support. We haven't examined the cloth seats, but Jeep has always done good rugged cloth. The stitching on the Overland Summit's leather dashboard straddles the fence between subtle luxury and Cowboy Cadillac. The instrument panel features clean white numbers and needles and clear lighting. The tachometer adds a blue area, from 800 to 2500 rpm, a reminder of the best fuel-mileage range. The three-spoke steering wheel tilts and telescopes, and includes cruise control with audio buttons at the back of the spokes. The Overland steering wheel is wood from about 10 o'clock to 2, and, with the internal heating elements, makes a very thick wheel perhaps better suited for yacht helm duty. The LED lighting in the cabin works well, to erase the yellow harshness of the old days. There's an optional giant dual-pane panoramic sunroof that opens wide to the sky. So you can see the stars, maybe better than you can see out the rear window through the rearview mirror. The sloped backlight and rear headrests pinch the space for visibility. The location and operation of things on the center stack, such as the electronic switchbank and HVAC controls, is all good. Except for the position of the shift lever, which does not lend itself to manual shifting in the Sport mode, because your elbow hits the center armrest. You have to cock your elbow high and bend your wrist too much. If you do much shifting like that, you'll be screaming for paddles on the steering wheel. The SRT8 comes with a special steering wheel with paddles. The SRT8 also comes with sport seats to keep you in place working them. Gauge graphics are revised for the SRT8 and the electronic vehicle information center adds functions not found on other Grand Cherokees such as performance parameters. Underway, the Grand Cherokee cabin is very quiet, even with the throttle floored, even over rough pavement. There are three layers of noise insulation, adding to the weight but the quiet is impressive. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComSummaryThe Jeep Grand Cherokee boasts a capable chassis, comfortable interior that's utility useful or fashion friendly, competitive powertrains. It offers the off-road capability that mid-size SUVs should offer. It offers serious towing capability. The new SRT8 puts the Germans on notice that there are super-ute alternatives, and this one costs a lot less. We were particularly impressed with Laredo with a V6 and think it offers the best value proposition. Sam Moses reported from San Francisco after his test drive of the Grand Cherokee near San Francisco, with G.R. Whale reporting from the Mojave desert after his test drive of the SRT8.
