BODYWORK/TRIM While this real-deal GTO's classic good looks originated in the mind of engineer John Z. DeLorean, it was the professionals at Tony's Muscle Cars of Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania that ensured its present appearance is top-notch in virtually ever way. Back in 1999, a meticulous mechanic, who remains friends with the car's current owner, orchestrated a body-off, rotisserie restoration that dressed original sheetmetal and original floorpans in a roster of NOS componentry. Fast forward to late 2015, when the crew at Tony's thoroughly freshened that reboot and added rich Burgundy 2-stage that perfectly contrasts the car's clean white top. And today, this razor-sharp Poncho is a first class head turner that's solid, composed and ready for prime time! ENGINE Peek under the fully functional hood and you'll find a '72-spec 455 that was completely rebuilt by the pros at Jim Taylor Engine Service of Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania. At the top of that Turquoise mill, a Ram Air IV Quadrajet bridges the gap between stainless fuel lines, a date-correct air cleaner and a port-matched Ram Air IV intake. That air/fuel mixture floods '69 Ram Air IV heads, which hide Manley valves, Comp springs, Comp roller rockers and Crane chromoly pushrods under polished covers. That valvetrain is propelled by a balanced rotating assembly, which spins TRW pistons between Clevite bearings, a Crane cam and high quality Melling lifters. That assembly gets sparked by MSD 6AL ignition, which sequences fire through a traditional points distributor and Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, jet-coated '69 Ram Air IV exhaust manifolds make quick work of spent gases. At the front of those manifolds, old school pulleys spin a rebuilt alternator and factory power steering in front of Edelbrock timing components. And a fresh brake booster, a factory-spec radiator and a familiar Melling oil pump keep the fluids flowing. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Logging few miles since the car's freshening, this goat's fully restored undercarriage is completely free of significant issues and major defects. The stout big block commands a tough Muncie 4-speed with the help of a beefy Hayes clutch. That proven gearbox grinds power to a rebuilt GM 10-bolt, which spins a posi-trac differential around friendly 3.36 gears. That drivetrain rides in a familiar F41 Sports Suspension. At the corners of that suspension, power-assisted calipers clamp drilled and slotted rotors. A custom, true-dual exhaust system connects the car's coated manifolds with welded, dual-chamber mufflers and polished stainless tips. And a quartet of U.S. Mags Ramblers spins 245/45ZR17 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs in front of 285/40ZR18 Nitto NT555 Extreme ZRs. INTERIOR Swing the doors and you'll find a clean vinyl interior that feels like the perfect place to spend a warm summer evening. The car's bright Torch Red paint, which is topped by a durable clearcoat shell, perfectly accentuates its lightweight body. That body's composite panels display precise fit and excellent finish under ancillary hardware that functions well and seals great. And by the looks of this Corvette's slick finish, I'm fairly certain it has never seen daily driver duty. In fact, it's very unlikely the car's glossy, wet-look hue has ever felt anything more aggressive than a soft detailing cloth. And when that level of ownership is combined with Chevrolet's top notch build quality, it creates one seriously capable sports car that'll show well and absolutely blister the road! Walking around this coupe, it's easy to appreciate how gently late-model C4s have aged. Nearly two decades after they debuted, the car's sharp lines still represent the Corvette brand incredibly well. At the front its neon body, a clean combination of halogen running lamps and amber turn signals frame a stamped Corvette tag panel that's free of chips or damage of any kind. Above that tag panel, a long hood, which mimics the cowl induction units found on classic Chevrolets, features a fresh black Corvette emblem that's complete with a pristine mix of silver checkers, black checkers and a red Chevy bowtie. At the sides of that emblem, the car's profile carries the same coke bottle shape of older Corvettes, except whittled down by years of gained aerodynamic knowledge. Embedded in that knowledge, a ring of body-color trim perfectly complements clear cornering lamps, traditional Corvette gills, sinister "ZR-1" emblems, satin black door handles and body-matched mirrors. Inside those mirrors, original, lightly tinted glass reflects a small center high mount stop lamp and painted targa roof. And at the back of the car's body, four trademark Corvette tail lights frame a broad "CORVETTE" script, vertical reverse lamps and original, square exhaust tips. The aluminum LT5 V8 found under the hood of this virtually new Corvette is a modern work of automotive art. Originally intended to be a simple set of 16-valve cylinder heads atop a basic Chevrolet small block, the Lotus engineers assigned to the project quickly realized there was no cost-effective way to build such a motley beast. Instead, they designed a world class V8 which shared basic dimensions with Chevrolet's storied small block, but exactly zero interchangeable components. The result is a 32-valve, 4-cam powerhouse that features a trick dual-path induction system, 405 horsepower and 385 lb./ft. of torque, all without any help from fuel supplements or any kind of forced induction. The aesthetically pleasing piece was assembled by Mercury Marine, whose specialization in aluminum casting won them the contract. And when fitted under the Corvette's clamshell hood, it became an ultra-performance world record holder. There's no mistaking the big engine's unique intake and sculpted cam covers, which are emblazoned with the Corvette logo, for something any less than fantastic. And, more beautifully finished than any engine since the 1930s, the LT5 in this ZR-1 is preserved in 100% showroom-fresh condition. Don't worry; the lightweight mill has definitely been operated enough to stay healthy, with its fluids being changed regularly. And nothing, from the bottom of its spotless hood to the top of its clean oil pan, shows any significant signs of wear and tear. Behind that hot small block, a proven ZF 6-speed distributes power to a factory Corvette rear end. That combination works great in conjunction with the motor's ability to shut down half its intake runners, making this Vette plenty quick off the line and a joy to cruise on the highway. All ZR-1s have a Lotus-tuned FX3 double A-arm front and independent rear suspension, which features electronic traction control and driver-adjustable active ride control. 4-wheel, Lotus-tuned power disc brakes combine with Lotus-tuned power steering to keep all that power productive and pointed straight. Factory dual exhaust runs from original equipment manifolds into two rear-mounted mufflers that hang just before GM's familiar square exhaust tips. And torque meets the pavement through a set of killer 17-inch alloys that spin super wide 275/40 Goodyear Eagle GS-C radials in front of even wider 315/35 Goodyear Eagle GS-C radials. The bottom of this Corvette is every bit as nice as its spectacular engine compartment and glossy exterior panels, showing minimal wear and almost no signs of weathering. The car's bright suspension bits contrast nicely to a clean floorpan. And its straight and solid chassis barely looks like its seen ANY time on the street. Good preservation is key to any vintage car's interior, and this C4's clean cockpit looks factory fresh in virtually every way. The plush driving environment kicks off with a pair of 6-way, power adjustable buckets that are stitched in Black leather. In front of those buckets, a leather-wrapped and cross-flag branded steering wheel laps a conservative dash that's fitted with both clear analog and bright digital gauges. Inside that dash, the car's modern center stack anchors electronic climate control above a premium Delco Bose sound system, a simple black shifter and buttons for the adjustable suspension. Opposite that center stack, two-tone side panels hang switches for both power windows and power door locks above sculpted armrests. At the back of those side panels, a surprisingly spacious cargo hold features enough room for short, weekend road trips. And naturally, all the amenities and conveniences you've come to expect in a modern ride are present and accounted for. Meticulously maintained, and driven just 8,972 miles, this Le Mans-inspired super star is barely broken in. BODYWORK/TRIM As far as looks go, you'd better be an extrovert, or an introvert with a strong desire to switch teams, if you're planning on taking this Spyder home. It certainly grabs attention, firing up conversations wherever it's driven. That appeal begins with the car's classic Lamborghini proportions, only to be elevated by impressive Ibis White paint and a tight cloth roof. Judging by its clean CarFax report, the small amount of road time this drop-top has seen was likely executed during sunny, drama-free weather. And the car's sculpted body displays precise fit and excellent finish under ancillary hardware that functions well and seals great. Combining muscular sheetmetal and edgy trim with a buttoned down stance and clean, modern detailing, this awesome spyder takes designer Frank Lamberty's original vision and stretches it around parameters benchmarked for the street. At the front of the car, Audi's trademark Singleframe grille hangs a chrome "quattro" script between automatic, LED headlamps, a familiar 'four marques' insignia and massive brake ducts. And behind those extractors, a louvered tail panel centers a small "R8" emblem and second 'four marques' insignia between LED tail lamps, an adaptive spoiler and large exhaust outlets. ENGINE Specific kinds of cars are immediately recognizable by visual cues, and this Audi's mid-engine layout puts it in an elite class that features the likes of Porsche, Ferrari and sister-brand Lamborghini. The car's already stout V8 benefits from a APR Stage 1 performance chip that, on premium gas, helps twist a stout 444 horsepower into a smooth 357 lb./ft. of torque. Mechanically, there are no leaks or squeaks of any kind, and the car's LED-lit engine bay appears just as clean as the day it rolled off VAG's Neckarsulm assembly line. And, best of all, the impressive mill represents purpose-built performance that'll fire up in any weather, drive thousands of miles before anyone needs to turn its bolts, and probably lay waste to pretty much anything that's brave enough to stage a challenge. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Underneath the car, wind-cheating panels conceal a roster of technologically forward components. The main feature is a permanent all-wheel drive system that was developed by Audi subsidiary quattro. Stab the throttle and power spins through an S-tronic 7-speed twin-clutch transmission. Step on the other pedal and you'll encounter multi-piston calipers that efficiently utilize carbon fiber-reinforced ceramic rotors, 14 inches in the front and 14.4 inches out back. Those brakes pair with electromechanical power steering, an aluminum, double wishbone suspension and application-specific H&R Sport Springs that provide a lowered ride height and increased handling. All that first class hardware attaches to an ASF high strength aluminum monocoque that's strong yet lightweight. And everything rolls on custom ACE wheels, which crank 235/30ZR20 Michelin Pilot Super Sports in front of 305/25ZR20 Michelin Pilot Super Sports. This R8 takes that energy even further with ambient LEDs and classy leather and Alcantara seating surfaces.
