Designed to compete against the contemporary Lamborghini Miura and newly designed Countach, the 365 GT4 BB represented a major departure for Enzo Ferrari, replacing the front-engined Daytona. Ferrari had previously been of the opinion that such a powerful mid-engined road car would be too much for his customers, but eventually realized otherwise after the success of the mid-engined Dino racing cars, and of course the V6 mid-engined Dino road cars. The stunningly handsome and very rapid Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer, or 512 BB, was introduced at the Paris Auto Show in October of 1976, although actual production had begun several months earlier. The 512 BB was the successor to the 365 GT4 BB, and offered a similar mechanical layout and exterior appearance. The new car included the addition of a new front chin spoiler and NACA intakes on the flanks. There were also now just four taillights instead of the previous six. Most notably, the 365BB/512BB series was Ferrari's first with a 180-degree flat 12-cylinder engine in a production car. The four camshafts on these engines were belt-driven, another "first" for Ferrari. The 512's engine produced 360 DIN bhp at 6,200rpm, breathing through a quartet of Weber three-barrel carburetors. Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection replaced the carburetors in late 1981 to help meet increasingly tough US exhaust emission regulations - the car's name was altered to reflect this change. As a result, horsepower dropped to 340 and torque to 333 foot-pounds at 4,600rpm. The injected Berlinetta Boxer still however remained a strong performer, capable of 0-60 from a standing start in just six seconds flat, and reaching almost 175mph (the factory claimed an optimistic 188 mph), covering the standing quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds at 103.5mph. A plush leather interior, full instrumentation, electric window lifts, three-point inertia seat belts, and air conditioning were standard. A unique "single-arm, twin blade" windshield wiper was fitted to help clear the huge windshield glass. Road & Track magazine called the 512 BB "the best all-around sports and GT car we've tested". THE MOTORCAR OFFERED Offered here is a factory left-hand-drive, European-specification 512 Berlinetta Boxer. The desirable carbureted 512, chassis number 24445 was originally delivered new to Germany in 1978. The car subsequently relocated to Bruxelles, Belgium, where it was stolen during the early 1980s. 24445 was discovered in California, USA in 1985, having been fitted with engine and transaxle from 512 BB chassis number 24317. The car was owned by a Ferrari Owners Club member in Santa Fe Springs, California from 1986-1993, before being offered for sale in the mid-1990s in Florida. The kilometer reading recorded at this point was just 28,000kms. 512 BB 24445 is believed to have been in a collection in Texas during the late 1990s, before relocating to California, and later to the east coast. In 2014, the marque specialists at Black Horse Garage, Bridgeport, Connecticut, treated the Ferrari to an extensive, engine-out service, where the cars clutch and timing belt were replaced. Today, this 512 BB shows beautifully throughout. Presented in its Rosso Corsa finish with Nero Black leather, it is fitted with the attractive Cromodora 'Star' alloy wheels with three-eared knock-off spinners. This wonderful Ferrari is supplied with spare wheel and manuals, and will surely present its next owner with a thrilling driving experience. (It even has Daytona hood scoops and a rear end that is reminiscent of the legendary Daytona.) This may be the prettiest 456 out there as it features arguably the best color combination. Everyone who sees the car, passersby, other motorists, etc., comments on how beautiful the color is. Monaco blue over a royal / navy blue interior (Blu 4307, I believe). For sale is an extremely rare Intermeccanica Spyder, one of just 354 ever made during a six year period from the late 1960s to the early 70s, making this a Ferrari Daytona era car. Yet its styling is more closely related to the Ferrari Nembo Spyder designed by Tome Meade, a car many consider one of the most handsome of Ferraris and a car worth millions of dollars. Apparently these cars, like the Miura, became light at high speeds and so this valence was installed to keep the car better planted to the motorway. I purchased the car a number of years ago and it has been covered and stored in a garage. It is an original car, not one that someone else has restored. You don't have to wonder if this car was a rust-bucket or wrecked before a restoration. You could drive it as it is or restore it, depending on whether you want a more original look or a the new concours look. I will paste the RM Description below, but for those who are unfamiliar with this car, the great thing about it is it provides true sexy Italian metal bodywork, designed and built by artisans in Turin Italy, with rugged and reliable classic American V8 power, a Ford 351 Cleveland V8. So unlike an old Ferrari, Lamborghini or Maserati, you can run down to your local Pep Boys and buy a water pump or tune up kit or have Jiffy Lube change your oil. RM just sold a rather unexciting navy blue Italia Spyder for nearly $200,000. That car had terribly wrong aftermarket / modern gauges and other issues. My car is "resale red" with a full tan interior, the most desirable color combination and its original instruments. It also had significant maintenance work by the prior owner with barely 5 miles on the car since I've owned it. With a Ford drivetrain and two seat interior, you could drive this car as it is or restore fully and still have a car that was less than the navy blue Italia and it would be new to you. My original plan was to start driving the car this summer and restore it over the 2015/2016 winter, which is exactly what I will do if I am unable to acquire this other car, which is presently located in Europe. Wheelbase: 94.5" In 1959 chemical engineer Frank Reisner combined his fascination with automobiles and professional talents to establish Carrozzeria Automobile Intermeccanica. Born in Hungary in 1932 and raised in Canada, he raced sports cars and "specials" in the late fifties before moving to Italy. Here he designed a racing chassis for Giannini Automobile, Spa, Rome, but soon relocated to Turin to build speed equipment. Over the next few years Reisner built numerous cars including the Apollo GT, which was based on Buick mechanicals, for International Motor Cars of San Francisco. These stylish Italian-bodied sports cars helped firmly establish Carrozzeria Intermeccanica as an automobile manufacturer, despite the fact 1963-65 production was limited to about one hundred units. Other Intermeccanica models followed -- from one-off prototypes to the Corvair-powered Phoenix constructed for John Fitch. After a few sour arrangements Reisner was left with 142 completed chassis in Turin. He went to Ford and secured a steady supply of 289 cubic inch V8 engines (later Cleveland and Windsor 351 cubic inch V8s), and drivetrains for shipment back to his factory in Italy. He arranged for a new distributor to sell his first true production car, the Torino, but in 1967 the similarly styled 5-liter, later the 5.7-litre Italia was unveiled. The Corvette-like Italia in Ferrari-inspired clothing sold well in America. Sports Car Graphic said in 1970, “…it has the potential to be the Ford Motor Company’s version of the ’Vette. And it’s a lot more exciting.” The 0-60mph time was 6.2 seconds. The engine is fitted with custom valve covers, a new Edelbrock 650cfm 4V carb and Edelbrock Performer intake manifold. Its recent freshening also included addition of a new electronic ignition, rebuilt front end, rebuilt front and rear disc brakes, new wiring harness, stainless steel exhaust system as well as a new fuel pump, The fuel system and lines, hoses and belts and much more have been inspected, repaired or replaced where necessary. Riding on new tires mounted on vintage Magnum 500 wheels, this Italia in fresh Milano Russo paint mates the best of Italian design and American Muscle.
