But take a closer look at all this brightwork. All the major elements and even the right details, like the hood ornament, have all been rechromed. Now this big American can shine as bright as the day it left Ford's Norfolk, Virginia factory. The bold red paint not only gives this a commanding presence on street, but we think it does a great job of emphasizing the sporty style of this pillarless hardtop fastback body. Combine this with the removable fender skirts, and the profile of this large coupe is downright sleek. When a vintage car is cherry red on the outside, we all know the best interior color is a deep dark black. That's why there are new seat covers, new carpeting, and a replaced dash panel, to make sure that this one gets plenty of attention at the car shows. But beyond just appearance, you know you have the versatility to take everyone for a ride in this Galaxie 500, with its wide split front bench, and spacious rear bench seating. And, everyone is comfortable, thanks to features like the factory heat/defrost, and upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo that's hidden below the dash so not spoil the interior's vintage appearance. It has a 4 barrel carburetor, a 9.6 to 1 compression ratio and the lubrication systems require 6 quarts of oil. The hood scoop actually allows air to enter the engine compartment and the dual exhausts are all original. The power steering uses a recirculating ball system and the power brakes include 11 inch diameter drums. The cooling system holds 23.5 quarts and the fuel tank holds 20 gallons. The original black paint has been carefully preserved with high quality waxes, and the red and white interior, with the loads of chrome looks great. Pin striping has been judiciously added to the fins, corner posts and air scoop. It is very subtle and adds a slight accent to the car’s classic look. We purchased the car on June 23, 1979 with about 45,500 miles on it and it has been garage kept ever since. We believe we are the third owners, the original owners reportedly kept it for summer driving on their eastern Long Island estate (hence the low mileage), and after about 15 years sold it to a high school shop teacher who replaced the padded dash and then sold it to us. The title is clear and has no liens. The car has taken us to Vermont, the hills of Georgia and numerous parades and family events with other “Square Bird” enthusiasts. It has never been in any timed competitions or accidents. During corporate moves from New York to Atlanta and then to Norfolk the car was carefully loaded into an enclosed moving van. The headliner is original and in very good condition. The carpet is an authentic replacement and all seats have been completely stripped to their frames, painted, new padding and authentic covers installed. Seat belts similar to originals offered by Ford were added for safety. The trunk liner is also original and in fair/good condition. Wheel covers are simulated wire with knock off hubs made by Ford. The tires are Michelins. The original AM radio still works, as do all lights. Previously unused genuine 1960 Virginia license tags are mounted front and rear. We have driven it about 14,000 miles in over 30 years and made the following improvements. Replaced; - Manual windshield sprayer with an electric pump. - Vacuum windshield wiper system with 2-speed electric- Clock with a tachometer that fits perfectly into the mount, and have carefully saved the clock.- Transmission coolant line with a steel one with fewer joints.- Generator, voltage regulator, starter, ignition coil.- Dome light frame and lens. - Master brake cylinder, booster, brake line and front wheel cylinders.- Both exhaust manifold gaskets.- Radiator hoses and clamps.- All carpeting, seat padding and authentic red and white seat covers. Installed; - Direct reading oil pressure and water temperature gauges.- Fender skirts.- Battery disconnect terminal clamp.- Michelin tires (but kept one of the original Fisks as a spare).- Rerouted crankcase vent line into back of air filter to reduce emissions. A maintenance and repair log has been carefully recorded, and will be provided along with the 1960 Thunderbird Shop Manual and Chilton’s Automobile Repair Manual. All who have seen it with its high gloss original black paint and unmistakable lines have admired this “Black Beauty”. This car has served in vintage vehicle parades, as an everyday driver, and a Sunday cruiser. On the open road with four adults and luggage on board it averaged 14 mph. When parked at upscale restaurants it stands out among today’s nondescript luxury cars, just as it was meant to do.
