While we love a well-done car (reference our very own '57 Chevy, for instance,) we loathe hack jobs. Unfortunately, that's what you'll most likely find when you go to buy one. When we see the right ones, though, we'll offer them for sale. This car fits: Solid build quality, the right parts, and it's well sorted. This car drives as good as it looks. Description An original steel body Titled as a 1938 car A very cool hot rod Extensive paperwork, receipts Big block power, every creature comfort You couldn't possibly build one for this price Starting with an original '38 Tudor shell, a plan was formed at Heartland Rod Warehouse in Berryton, KS. A clean body, a fully custom interior, a competent chassis, and big block power. Outside, you'll find the result of 860 man hours in the bodywork alone. While the job seems straightforward--after all, it's just a mild custom, right? Well, yes and no. First, body fit on a 1938 anything isn't what you'd call "close," and that's before adding new fenders, smoothed steel running boards, a rear roll pan, flushing up the taillights, frenching in the license plate and exhaust outlets, shaving the door handles and much, much more. Up front you'll find a stock grille flanked by replacement headlights in those big fenders. Amazingly, the fenders are the only fiberglass panels on the car. Sharp-eyed Ford fanatics will notice the '39 engine side covers, which are less "busy" than their '38 counterparts. The hood ornament and all other brightwork was shaved or painted body color. The windshield is a one-piece affair with a flushed gasket. The doors and decklid lost their handles in favor of electric solenoids, and the rear deck now stays open thanks to pneumatic cylinders. Boyd Coddington Impulse Series billet wheels anchor the car to the ground. The candy flames add a little whimsy to a car which obviously doesn't take itself too seriously. Popped the hood expecting some random rebuilt 350, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see a big block Chevy instead. In going through the receipts we found that it's the car's centerpiece. It's a true 512 "Hi Perf" block, and those aren't cheap or easy to find. It was then sent to Gessford Machine, one of the premier engine builders in the midwest. There, they checked everything over, Magnafluxed the bock, bored it .030 over using torque plates, line bored the mains, and blueprinted all dimensions. A stock forged 454 crank was checked and ground, stock forged rods were reconditioned and had new Speed Pro forged pistons hung. The rotating assembly was balanced with the harmonic balancer and flexplate installed. The short block came together with new bearings and all ARP fasteners. A Comp XE268H cam was slid in, a new double roller chain was hung out front, and work progressed to the heads. They're a pair of 781 oval ports (torque's important here) that were CC'd, have had a competition 3 angle valve job, new guides, new seals, new Comp springs and a cleanup cut for straightness. Comp Magnum roller rockers work with Comp pushrods to actuate the valves, which were milled to dial in their height, and springs which were shimmed to even out the spring rates. It's details like that which separate a good engine from a great one! A Holley Street Avenger carb, a polished and smoothed dual plane intake, cool finned valve covers and Sanderson shorties finish off the powerplant. A Griffin radiator keeps things cool--this car was built to run in the sweltering Kansas summer heat. Inside, there's a lot to see. Heartland built the dash from scratch, and it's all metal. Auto Meter gauges keep you informed, while a $1900 stereo keeps you entertained. Talented stitchwork is everywhere from the bound carpets to the headliner. Custom door panels, recovered bucket seats, power windows, tilt wheel and more add to its appeal and your comfort. You'll find Vintage Air climate control, Dakota Digital cruise control, billet pedals and more. Look at the pictures and you'll constantly find new tricks. Underneath, there's a chassis from Heinzman Street Rods painted in GM Torch Red. There's a narrowed Heidt's kit up front and a 9" axle out back. Wilwood polished calipers are at all four corners while rack-and-pinion steering guides your way. Cruising is a pleasure thanks to the 700R4 that's in the middle. Extra coolers for the transmission and engine oil are underneath, too. The entire underbody is covered in thick bedliner for a quieter ride and less maintenance. There's nothing too trick under here, but you'd be amazed at how well this car drives. The build quality can't be talked about enough. This car starts right up, drives straight, and everything works. While we love a well-done car (reference our very own '57 Chevy, for instance,) we loathe hack jobs. Unfortunately, that's what you'll most likely find when you go to buy one. When we see the right ones, though, we'll offer them for sale. This car fits: Solid build quality, the right parts, and it's well sorted. This car drives as good as it looks. An original steel body Titled as a 1938 car A very cool hot rod Extensive paperwork, receipts Big block power, every creature comfort You couldn't possibly build one for this price Starting with an original '38 Tudor shell, a plan was formed at Heartland Rod Warehouse in Berryton, KS. A clean body, a fully custom interior, a competent chassis, and big block power. Outside, you'll find the result of 860 man hours in the bodywork alone. While the job seems straightforward--after all, it's just a mild custom, right? Well, yes and no. First, body fit on a 1938 anything isn't what you'd call "close," and that's before adding new fenders, smoothed steel running boards, a rear roll pan, flushing up the taillights, frenching in the license plate and exhaust outlets, shaving the door handles and much, much more. Up front you'll find a stock grille flanked by replacement headlights in those big fenders. Amazingly, the fenders are the only fiberglass panels on the car! Sharp-eyed Ford fanatics will notice the '39 engine side covers, which are less "busy" than their '38 counterparts. The hood ornament and all other brightwork was shaved or painted body color. The windshield is a one-piece affair with a flushed gasket. The doors and decklid lost their handles in favor of electric solenoids, and the rear deck now stays open thanks to pneumatic cylinders. Boyd Coddington Impulse Series billet wheels anchor the car to the ground. The candy flames add a little whimsy to a car which obviously doesn't take itself too seriously. Popped the hood expecting some random rebuilt 350, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see a big block Chevy instead. In going through the receipts we found that it's the car's centerpiece. It's a true 512 "Hi Perf" block, and those aren't cheap or easy to find. It was then sent to Gessford Machine, one of the premier engine builders in the midwest. There, they checked everything over, Magnafluxed the bock, bored it .030 over using torque plates, line bored the mains, and blueprinted all dimensions. A stock forged 454 crank was checked and ground, stock forged rods were reconditioned and had new Speed Pro forged pistons hung. The rotating assembly was balanced with the harmonic balancer and flexplate installed. The short block came together with new bearings and all ARP fasteners. A Comp XE268H cam was slid in, a new double roller chain was hung out front, and work progressed to the heads. They're a pair of 781 oval ports (torque's important here) that were CC'd, have had a competition 3 angle valve job, new guides, new seals, new Comp springs and a cleanup cut for straightness. Comp Magnum roller rockers work with Comp pushrods to actuate the valves, which were milled to dial in their height, and springs which were shimmed to even out the spring rates. It's details like that which separate a good engine from a great one! A Holley Street Avenger carb, a polished and smoothed dual plane intake, cool finned valve covers and Sanderson shorties finish off the powerplant. A Griffin radiator keeps things cool--this car was built to run in the sweltering Kansas summer heat. Inside, there's a lot to see. Heartland built the dash from scratch, and it's all metal. Auto Meter gauges keep you informed, while a $1900 stereo keeps you entertained. Talented stitchwork is everywhere from the bound carpets to the headliner. Custom door panels, recovered bucket seats, power windows, tilt wheel and more add to its appeal and your comfort. You'll find Vintage Air climate control, Dakota Digital cruise control, billet pedals and more. Look at the pictures and you'll constantly find new tricks. Underneath, there's a chassis from Heinzman Street Rods painted in GM Torch Red. There's a narrowed Heidt's kit up front and a 9" axle out back. Wilwood polished calipers are at all four corners while rack-and-pinion steering guides your way. Cruising is a pleasure thanks to the 700R4 that's in the middle. Extra coolers for the transmission and engine oil are underneath, too. The entire underbody is covered in thick bedliner for a quieter ride and less maintenance. There's nothing too trick under here, but you'd be amazed at how well this car drives. The build quality can't be talked about enough. This car starts right up, drives straight, and everything works. A couple weeks back we had a Shelby expert here looking it over, and we fixed a comprehensive list of faults large and small. The short version is that this car is priced well below market value, and well below other GT500's for sale today. This is not a car to pass on! Before its inspection the car was very nice--you can see that in the pictures. The top didn't work too well, the exhaust was tired, and several small details were lacking. We pride ourselves on sorted cars, and this one was below our standards. Here's what we took care of in the past month: We installed: Both front shocks (Koni Classic,) air cleaner mounting hardware, air filter, oil pressure sending unit boot, date-coded spark plug wires, one horn (was missing,) radiator fan shroud, transmission pan gasket, the entire exhaust system from the manifolds to the tips, sway bar bracket bushings, power steering hoses, rebuilt power steering "ram," fuel cap emblem, both power top hydraulic cylinders, both front window cranks, emergency flasher button, driver side vent cable, washer fluid floor pad and the battery. We also tidied up some wiring, made sure all of the lights worked inside and out, and gave the car the once-over. Being an old car, some of those items are forgivable, but we sell cars that exceed expectations. When you think of significant muscle cars there are a few cars and names which come to mind. At the top of nearly every list you’ll find one ornery Texan, Carroll Shelby, and his fantastic reinterpretation of Ford’s Mustang. More desirable yet are the convertibles and the big block cars, and this gorgeous Sunlit Gold example here is both. Highly documented, a 25+ year SAAC member car and owned by the same man who took delivery for more than 30 years this show ready example is perfect for any high end collection. The big three pieces of documentation follow this car: The ORGINAL build sheet, the Marti Report and a copy of the original invoice. Here’s how this car left Metuchen on March 5th, 1968: 428CI Police Interceptor V8 C6 Automatic Transmission Exterior paint: Sunlit Gold interior: Black Décor Bucket Seats White Power Convertible Top w/Glass Rear Window Visibility Group (light package) Wheel Lip Moldings Power Steering Power Front Disc Brakes Tilt Steering Wheel Air Conditioning AM Radio Interior Décor Group Tinted Glass Tachometer and Trip Odometer When Shelby got done with it there were a pile of changes from the specific bodywork to the rollover bar to the Goodyear Speedway tires to the Stewart Warner “green line” gauges in the center stack. Completed, it went to Pletcher Ford Sales in Jenkintown, PA, where it was picked up on July 22, 1968 by its new owner, James W. Sole. Jim kept the build sheet, the copy of the invoice, the original tax form from 1968, receipts for various services throughout the years, the brochures and ads for the car, previous registrations and damn near every SAAC dash plaque and member card he owned. There’s even an autograph from Carroll himself! You like to see long-term ownership of a car--it means it was something special to the person behind the wheel and not just a toy. Mr. Sole loved the car, and wherever his job took him the Shelby followed. It spent time in Philly, Rochester, NY, Westport, CT, and Palos Verdes, CA before winding up in Rockport, MA. If you’d believe it Jim used the car for his daily transportation through 1989! He retired the car to weekend duty and had the car restored in the next couple of years by specialist Mike White in Bow, Mass. Finished in time for the 1993 show season it took Best Restored Antique at the 1993 Boston World of Wheels show against a ton of competition. Shunning a trailer even after the significant restoration he drove it to the 18th annual Shelby American Auto Club meet and took home silver in class--the highest score handed out for a driven car at the meet. The biggest point deductions? Jim installed a set of Koni shocks and reinstalled the 10 spoke alloy wheels he bought from Shelby in 1981--two big no-no’s in a structured event like that. Out of the 19 points deducted a whopping 13 of them were for the shocks and rolling stock! Suffice to say Mike’s talents and Jim’s dedication produced a gold level vehicle! Desirable doesn’t always mean rare, and rare doesn’t always mean desirable, but this car is a rare case where both are true. One of only 402 GT500 convertibles produced in 1968, one of 249 with the 428/C6 combo and one of only 82 convertibles (both 350 and 500) in Gold over black. Inside, the near-stock theme continues, though with a level of refinement unheard of in a 1967 Ford. You'll sit in Procar Rallye 1000 leather seats, which have just the right vintage look. Under your feet, the original poly loop carpeting was ditched in favor of wool, and the vinyl heel pad is now leather. The door panels are now hand stitched leather, and the doors themselves were smoothed to tone down the factory texture. Leather covers just about every other surface, such as the mock console between the seats, the patterned headliner, the rear seat delete, the A pillars and even the kick panels. The stitching is arrow straight and looks amazing. A reproduction gauge bezel set houses all new gauges from Classic Instruments while the glove box hosts an Alpine head unit and the controls for the Vintage Air A/C system. Flaming River's tilt column helps you find the right steering wheel position. JL audio speakers and amps supply the tunes in case you ever get bored of listening to the monster under the hood. The chassis is as wild as the body is sedate. Stock no more, this Shelby now rides on a complete Art Morrison G-MAX frame with unequal length control arms up front and a Moser built Ford 9” articulated through a three-link and a Watts link out back. Putting a frame into a unibody car requires some deft surgery, and doing so while keeping the ride height so low requires all new floor pans. To make a long story short, builder Todd Redenshek cut away everything between the rocker pinch welds, threw it away, and started fresh. It's the level of modification you'll find on all-out drag cars, and it's the upcoming trend in Pro Touring. The frame itself is completely finished in the same blue metallic as the top, as is the T56 Tranzilla 6 speed transmisison, the 9” rear, and every other piece of the suspension that wasn't already polished or chromed. It's striking and fully functional at the same time. Adjustable coil overs are at all four corners, while Wilwood brakes handle stopping duties. With rotors measuring a robust 14.5” in the front and 13.5” in the rear you'll have no trouble shedding speed in a hurry. Billet Specialties wheels run 18x6 up front and a massive 20x12 in the rear, holding equally large 235/30 and 335/40 Michelin Pilot Sports. A fully TIG welded 3” exhaust with Borla mufflers massages the engine's audio signature more than it mutes it. You'll love it. Under the hood is a true monster. Measuring 20 cubic inches more than a factory 427, the Windsor-based small block here puts down huge power in a far lighter package. A custom hydraulic roller cam actuates the 2.08/1.60 valves in the Dart Pro1 O-ringed and CNC ported heads.
