The FJ Cruiser is rated to tow as much as 4700 pounds. It would work fine for ATVs, snowmobiles and personal watercraft. Though the 4Runner is rated to tow only 300 pounds more on paper, for a variety of reasons we would consider it a much better tow vehicle. The Toyota V6 not only is strong, but clean and fuel-efficient as well. It earns the FJ Cruiser a LEV-II (low-emission vehicle) rating from the federal government. Fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 17/21 mpg City/Highway for a 4WD automatic, 15/19 mpg for a 4WD with 6-speed manual gearbox, and 17/22 mpg for a 2WD automatic. The Toyota FJ Cruiser is quite capable off road, even more so than the highly capable 4Runner on which it is based. The FJ offers better approach and departure angles and a shorter wheelbase, with the same generous ground clearance. Of the three drivetrains available, those primarily interested in the unique design statement made by the FJ Cruiser will likely opt for the two-wheel-drive setup. This is not the setup we would choose. Those planning to do serious off-road driving will want the full-time 44 with the manual transmission, which features a clutchless starting feature that can come in handy for rock-crawling maneuvers. With the manual transmission, the drivetrain is a full-time four-wheel-drive setup with H4, H4L (locked Torsen center differential) and L4L (low and locked) settings. The H4 mode usually sends 60 percent of power to the rear wheels, but can send as much as 53 percent of power to the front wheels or 70 percent to the rear wheels as needed. An electronically locking rear differential is standard with the manual transmission and available with the automatic, even in the two-wheel-drive version. With the manual transmission, the FJ Cruiser has an off-road crawl ratio of 41.84:1 and has proven itself capable of traversing California's rugged and world-famous Rubicon Trail. Those looking for an automatic likely will select the part-time 44 with its automatic transmission. It's a good choice regardless of road and weather conditions. It's also a good choice for rugged terrain and is available with Toyota's A-TRAC off-road technology. It's our choice, unless we were planning to do organized off-road adventures. With the automatic transmission, the four-wheel-drive system offers shift-on-the-fly selection with H2 (2WD High range), H4 (4WD High range) or L4 (4WD Low range) settings for the torque-splitting transfer case. The Upgrade Packages include Toyota's computer-controlled A-TRAC, for Active-TRACtion. This system, which also makes steering easier in rugged terrain, can be turned on or off via a switch on the dashboard control panel. In severe off-road situations, drivers may need to engage the locking rear differential, but we found the A-TRAC system ideal for negotiating a series of serious and deep moguls in steep terrain when we did our off-road test drive. The Vehicle Stability Control system works with the roll sensor to try to stop lateral skids before they can lead to a rollover. Failing that, the sensor deploys both the side-impact and side-curtain airbags. VSC comes standard on all models. Toyota anticipates that many FJ Cruiser owners will want to explore away from pavement, but most miles will be racked up on city streets and suburban highways, where we found the FJ Cruiser to be comfortable, even when we sat in the back seat. One thing we did notice, however, was that the big roof rack that's available as an accessory can create a lot of wind noise at Interstate speeds. This is true with all safari-style roof racks, something many Land Rover owners know. We still think lots of people will want one, however, if for no other reason than it looks so cool. We'd order one for ours and put up with the wind noise. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Like the exterior, the interior of the Toyota FJ Cruiser reflects the character of the early FJ40s, especially when equipped with the optional body-colored door panel inserts. The standard dashboard looks like an extruded aluminum beam, with audio and climate controls set into a body-colored panel in the center. If you want leather seats, you don't want an FJ Cruiser, which comes only with water-resistant cloth upholstery and rubberized floor and cargo mats. The expectation is that people who drive FJ Cruisers will get them dirty, and want the easy cleanup provided by such materials. The seats have active headrests. In certain rear collisions, a cable-actuated mechanism in the headrest moves it upward and forward to help limit the movement of the occupant's head, potentially reducing whiplash injuries. Folding rear headrests help with rearward visibility. Switches for various mechanical systems are set in a panel just ahead of the shift lever. Not only are they conveniently placed, but there are dummy switches to ease installation of aftermarket equipment such as auxiliary lighting or locking axles for extreme off-road use. The driver faces white-faced gauges that are easy to read (speedometer, tachometer, engine temperature, voltage and fuel level). In addition to the regular glove box ahead of the front passenger seat, there's a smaller covered storage box on top of the instrument panel in front of the driver. This area can be fitted with an accessory Garmin Quest 2 navigation unit that can be removed from the vehicle for hiking or other activities. Cup holders are provided in the center console and all four doors. A 12-volt outlet is mounted on the switch panel ahead of the shifter; and a three-prong, grounded 115-volt power outlet in the cargo area with a switch for either 100 or 400 watts of output (the higher figure available when the vehicle is at idle). The rear seatback splits 60/40 to optimize cargo carrying options. The rear-seat cushion tips forward and can be removed to provide a few more inches of cargo area behind the front seats. Rear-hinged rear side doors give easy access to the back seat and cargo area, helped by front seatbacks that fold forward. Perhaps appropriately, the front seatback folds a little further forward on the right (curb) side. The standard audio system includes a CD player and iPod and MP3 capability as well as two ceiling-mounted speakers designed to enhance the sound experience within the FJ Cruiser. The Upgrade Package increases the speaker count from six to eleven and includes a pair of 2.6-inch speakers mounted on the rear pillars. Because the FJ Cruiser has wide C-pillars that may interfere with the driver's rearward vision, a rearview camera is included in the Convenience Package, to warn the driver of the proximity of objects when the transmission is in Reverse. The Upgrade Package adds rear parking sonar. We had no trouble parking the FJ in urban settings on our test drive, nor did we have to move into strange positions to see stoplights through the upright windshield. I did have it inspected twice (once independently and once at the dealer) prior to purchase to ensure it did not have the sub frame issue that has affected a few of these cars – it did not have it, and I purchased the car as proof. I have never done anything even remotely aggressive with it, so that would not have changed. 1 I did not receive a front license plate bracket when I bought it, but have not needed one in VA as they are not mandatory. They are $20 and I will include if you want or need one. I like the front without it. 2 There are no rips, wrinkles, creases, gouges, stains or anything. There is an ever so slight rubbing on the drivers outer bolster where your backside brushes against it as you sort of drop into the car (I am 6’3” and it is a long way down). Most people would consider it perfect but I want to be conservative in my assessments. There is a simple treatment that will remedy the rub but I did not want to be guilty of covering anything up. I am totally OCD – particularly with my cars, and have extra cars for cold, hot, and wet weather, so: Never been in the snow, slush, heat, or rain (it was rained on one time in 9 years on an anniversary trip) Always garaged – even at work No accidents No pets Non-smoker Always adult owned and driven No abuse (never seen the yellow line while I have owned it) Never tracked (I have never even squeaked the tires) No rattles No shakes No squeaks 3 No leaks No smells Tight! Steering, dash, everything. No window chips Everything works There is one ‘I can’t even call it a’ scratch; my son brushed the lower rocker with his pedal car. Plus 2 tiny rock chips. Pics included. Other than that, there is not a mark on it. We had a very tough time getting a picture of any of them – especially the mark on the rocker as it doesn’t have any texture and is still the same color as the paint. 3 When the hard top is installed a little squeaking can occur while the roof settles. Normally I gently retighten the four mounting points after a few days. When you get it, it will likely have the hardtop installed, so you may hear a little of this. I have maintained it faithfully and only driven it calmly (story below). It is a great car and I pamper it. Service has been uneventful: oil/filter changes (only with BMW filters and the factory and warranty prescribed Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60), new tires at 28,000, a new battery at 33,000, a coil pack, exhaust and intake cam sensors, a rotor bearing at 33.5. I replaced the rearview mirror when the LCD seal failed and have had it upgraded to an electronic/electrostatic dimmer. I replaced a piece of trim that the inside tab had broken off of the A pillar. *Extra* Keychain – I will include an M keychain (I still have an M6 but don’t need the keychain since it has comfort access) *Extra* Possible Surprise – If you have a kid in a car seat, I may have a surprise for you. The Hagerty ranking was based on the 1998 through 2000 model featuring a 240 HP S52 engine. Upping the stakes, this is the ultimate M Roadster – the 315 HP S54 powered variant produced from 2001-02 in very limited quantities (1564 over the 15 month production cycle for these 2 model years, and this is one of only 151 in this color combination; build date May 8,2001). Following the formula that Car and Driver called “the oldest trick in the automotive book”, BMW “stuff[ed]the most powerful engine you can get your hands on into the smallest car you’ve got”. What results is a proven platform with the venerated and potent drivetrain plucked straight out of the 2001-2006 M3; a car that spent its’ entire production run on the Car and Driver “10 Best Cars” list. BMW’s M Division did shoe-horn a V12 into a Z, but it made roughly the same horsepower (326) as the 2001-02 S54 powered M3 variant (333) and added tremendous weight, so was scrapped. In the end even shoehorning this engine into the Z required an exhaust modification that dropped the output to a still overpowering 315 and the redline to 7200 RPM. You can buy a noisier free-flowing aftermarket exhaust and bump it back up to 333, but I would not recommend it. A fellow M roadster owner did this and hated the more metallic sound of the exhaust through that setup and took it off and sold it. That and they are about $1300 not including labor. More noise! More money! According to Car and Driver “the engine is an absolute gem. This ferocious, screaming motor hurtles the M3 down the road with an urgency that now rivals the world's best sports cars from Porsche and Chevrolet. BMW estimates the M3 will hit 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds and will eat up a quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds—on a par with the 911 Carrera and Corvette“. As Jalopnik states of the S54 in their list of The Ten Best Engines of the Last 20 Years, “We all want one, right? So that pretty much settles it.” Imagine a car the size of a Mazda Miata with BMW build and materials quality and the engine and drivetrain from the mighty M3 in it. Open your eyes – it is right here. With the M Roadster weighing-in at 3084 pounds (331 pounds lighter, or 90% of the M3s 3415 pounds), the 2001-2002 BMW M Roadster is capable of 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. With an average of less than 10 pounds to carry per horsepower and over 100 HP produced per naturally aspirated liter, the E36/7 M Roadster competes with current performance offerings from all of the usual suspects. In fact, due to the comparative lightness of the M Roadster, the car was able to be fitted with a Getrag 5 speed manual, allowing it to go from 0-60 with only 1 required shift, versus the M3, which required the lower geared 6 speed transmission and 2 shifts. All that said, under normal to even spirited driving, this is a well-sorted and well-behaved car, free from any sort of belligerent noise - or drama other than visual, which this car serves up like a sexy woman in a tight dress. Spin it up above 5000 RPM and the double VANOS (still the standard at BMW today) alters the cam-phasing and the engine gets down to a different kind of business – serious business. This naturally aspirated (non turbo or supercharged) beauty soars to a 7200 RPM redline, and the engine and exhaust sounds take on new resonance as the cams shift position. Engine The S54 is the high performance version of the M50 and was used in the E46 M3, Z3 M Coupé / Roadster, and the E85 Z4 M Roadster / E86 M Coupe. The S54 is technically an evolution of the iron-block S50B32. It shares few major components with the S50 and differences include: · Increased cylinder bore to 87 mm (from 86.4 mm) for a new total displacement of 3,246 cc (from 3,201 cc)· Modified camshafts· High pressure Double VANOS continuously variable valve timing system with faster operation at high rpm· Increased compression to 11.5:1 (from 11.3:1)· More advanced BMW/Siemens MSS 54 engine management control· Finger-type rocker arms for reduced reciprocating mass and friction· One-piece aluminum head casting for lighter weight· Scavenging oil pump to maintain pressure during heavy cornering (Source: Wiki BMW S54) Mechanicals The M Roadster also has many M3 parts on board, including brakes and suspension, and numerous beefed-up components. Other changes included adding a limited slip differential (check the rear differential – straight racecar), a different gearbox and strengthening the chassis. Electronic aids include M-specific Dynamic Stability Control (which can becompletely disabled) and ABS. The M Roadster could run a wider track under the flared wheel arches as well as wider wheels and tires to try to tame the increased power. Standard tire sizes for the M Roadster is 225/45r17 at the front and 245/40r17 at the back. The low offset of the rear wheels allows plenty of flexibility to increase the rear tire width. A dual exhaust system fed each set of three cylinders to two dual tailpipes. This quad exhaust has since become a BMW M division signature. (Source: wiki “BMW M Roadster) Design This car is more than just an engine and, penned by Joji Nagashima (born and schooled in Japan, and also the designer of the venerable e39 M5), the e36/7 M Roadster is a graceful and powerful design. Almost ten years in, and I still stop and appreciate the subtle and sensual line from the hood, down the side, and around the sculpted rear and back to the front. The near absence of front and rear overhangs is particularly aesthetic. Fat steam-roller tires fill out and in (with a deep offset) the rear fenders and give the M Roadster a menacing stance from all angles. Quad tail pipes were introduced on the 1998 M Roadster and Coupe, and they have been standard on all Ms ever since. In my opinion, the 1998-2002 E36/7 M Roadster is a gorgeous design, and preceded the current pedestrian impact regulations that have caused hoods to rise in compliance. Not to offend, but this curvy design preceded the much-maligned Chris Bangle era of design that replaced the M Roadster in 2006. To repeat from Hagerty above . “We believe in the years to come this car will be highly desired by collectors for its gracious curves and powerful engine” – it is telling to me that they list the body ahead of the engine, because this is a stunning car. Exterior Features Quad chrome pipes out the back, fat tires and wheels, flared wheel arches, side mirrors, rear view mirror, special side grilles, sculpted M badges (they are flat from 1998-2000), a new trunk lid, shadow chrome finish alloy wheels, and different front and rear fascias identify this very special car. The stance is unmistakable. The front fascia sports an aggressive splitter to stabilize the car at speed, and deletes the standard road lights to provide additional cooling ducts for the front brakes (pinched from the M3). The rear fascia accommodates the fatter tires, flared rear wheel arches and quad tail pipes, and deletes the license plate mounting bracket, which would normally be where the tail pipes are. The license plate is relocated to the bottom of the trunk lid. I have included Z3 and M Roadster ‘before and after’ style photos to demonstrate how dramatic the M treatment is on the overall character of the car. Similarly, I included AC and AC/Cobra photos just to demonstrate the metamorphosis there too. Interior Features The interior features several unique items including: a chrome-ringed instrument cluster with grey-faced gauges, red needles and the M logo, power and heated sport seats, a 375 mm three-spoke M steering wheel with tri-color stitching, an illuminated M leather shift knob with the M logo on the shift pattern and a chrome boot surround, an oval-shaped automatic-dimming rear-view mirror with chrome surround, leather door pulls and center console trim, and door sill plates with the "M" logo. This late-run S54-powered M roadster has a 280 km/h / 170 mph speedometer. You will love the simplicity of the three climate control gauges: temperature, direction, and fan – so logical and intuitive. Entertainment Option one – lower roof and windows. Option two - Harman Kardon Stereo. AM/FM/CD. Speakers in the doors (tweeters and mids), and subwoofer in the hard bulkhead between the seats. Fully functional but rarely used (for option 1). Includes Bluetooth integration of phone and music via included Jabra device. Security I have never had a car stolen or even broken into. That said, I do have alarms and immobilizers on some of the cars and used to have them on all. Alarm – Factory alarm including integrated electronic radio theft deterrent. The head unit electronically locks and can’t be used without a 5 digit code. Remotes – As I mentioned, the alarm keychain remotes were not an OEM option. BMW partnered with AutoLoc and produced a BMW-blessed aftermarket module that plugged into an available port in the trunk that enabled full integration with the alarms. I have 2 and both will be included. Ravelco – This is a secondary ignition circuit, so the car cannot be started without both keys (BMW and Ravelco) in place. You don’t have to remove the Ravelco “plug” (A.K.A the key) so you can just leave it in place if you like and it’s normal. The plug is hidden above the hood release so no holes were drilled in the dash (picture included). Since the car is in the garage (with a territorial 100 pound African Lion Hound sleeping nearby - when the door is open and a thief could try to steal it) I leave the plug in most of the time. I do take it out (of my Jeep) when I am at the airport or downtown, as the Jeep is my go-to car for those trips. The Ravelco plus the extra plug cost $500. I had to special order external window stickers for the car because of the tinted windows. If they would have used the normal internally applied stickers it would peal the tinting off if the sticker was removed. Plus it shows up at night. Details! Read up on Ravelco and you will see that 4 million of these have been installed and not a single one has ever been defeated. Thieves can tap the BMW lock but not the Ravelco one. My History with the Car Ten years ago I sold my cherry 1969 Mustang Mach 1 428 (a horrible driver, handler, parker) and looked for the best handling, quickest, most beautiful, and most fun to drive car I could find. After much consideration and research, I targeted the 2001-2002 BMW M Roadster. It took me 18 months to find one that had low miles, a factory hard-top, non-smoker, in excellent condition, that had not been abused or tracked, and did not have any of those colored seat panels (red, blue, gray, green, orange, dark beige, or Laguna Seca blue – which I do not care for). When I saw this car I jumped on it. What did I learn? When you are driving an overpowered 40 year old car riding on 14 inch wheels, 7 inch wide tires, and with drum brakes in the rear, it's terrifying and pretty much anything else feels great. Even a GTI or Mazda 3 could beat it from 0-60. What I discovered when I changed cars was that I didn’t want to tear-around – I just couldn’t help tearing around in the Mach 1. I immediately settled into a pretty (dare I say it) mature groove with the car. I love the sound of the wind and the engine, the feel of the breeze, and didn’t need to drown all of that out with screeching tires, high rev burn-outs, or general jack-assery. I don’t even really use the radio (but it works). The thrum of the engine, the song of the tires, and the hum of the exhaust are all I need. To that, comparatively, I had a Porsche Boxster S too and the metallic-sounding exhaust rasp would wear on my nerves in a short period of time – none of that here. Even with the double VANOS kicked-in above 5000 RPMs the exhaust is not irritating. (I have not even gotten up to 5000 RPM in this car – I know from another M Roadster driver that I have ridden with). Tops I don’t really enjoy the extreme hot – or the extreme cold, so I drive with the roof on in summer and winter, and just take it off during the spring and then again in the fall. As such, the soft top has never (as long as I have owned it) been exposed to the extreme hot or cold, or sun. The prior owner also kept the hardtop on always, so the soft top was, and has been, spared from any real stress. That said, the soft top has been used frequently and is in perfect condition (as you can see in the photos), including the window. The window is clear and there is not an iota of yellowing on this window. Included is the factory kit that contains the protectors for the rear window when in storage in the car (when the hardtop is on), the hardtop storage and carrying kit, and some Mothers convertible top soft window 2 stage polish. I am having trouble finding the article (will keep looking) but Car and Driver called this top “quality goods”. It is multi-layered and heavily insulated and is resistant to sound, moisture, and temperature extremes. It’s three layers thick, so is tight, dry, quiet, and keeps the elements out completely. The tonneau cover is included and is a $452 add-on. You can fold it and keep it in the trunk, and then pop it on when you drop the top. When the hardtop is on you can store the tonneau in place over the soft top. In all likelihood, this is how the car will be when you receive it since we’ll want to pack everything in place to make sure you get everything. As a note, I store the tonneau flat, so it will not have any indication that it has been folded and stored. Will you Fit in it? As I mentioned, I am 6’3” - with a 44” out seam and I fit just fine. As a matter of fact, there’s an additional 2 inches available with the hardtop on and even more with the soft-top. Why am I selling if I love it so much? I telecommute now, and I have two 13 year olds at the same private school, so we have to drive them. So my driving is fairly light and I also rarely get the opportunity to use it for school trips since I have ‘three butts and two seats”. My kids also use these hard-side book bags that are essentially rolling lockers. I cannot fit them in the trunk. They are ridiculously huge and blocky and the car is neither. I do love this car and would love to keep it as it’s gorgeous and I think will not only appreciate but become more appreciated. It’s just not very practical for the next 2-3 years. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The 2009 Dodge Ram is a new truck that incorporates Dodge's forward-thinking style and refinements to cosmetics and engineering. The Dodge Ram is a light-duty full-size pickup, a so-called half-ton truck, but this latest version lacks the 1500 badge of previous versions because the heavy-duty versions (2500, 3500) share little in appearance and running gear. Technically the truck is not all new. The V6 and 4.7-liter V8 engines (overhauled recently), the brake system (upgraded), and transmissions have not been substantially changed for the 2009 model year. In a few cases, such as the front suspension geometry and the forward frame sections, the design remained but new materials are being used for more strength, less weight, or both. Some audio and climate control systems, and the middle front row seat may appear familiar, too. But that's where any similarities between the 2008 and 2009 models end. The bodywork is all new and more aerodynamic. A Crew Cab model has been added to the mix; it has more cabin space than the Quad Cab but in more manageable dimensions than the retired Mega Cab. The new Crew Cab required its own pickup bed, dubbed RamBox: A perfect rectangle inside, it sports a pair of lockable bins along the bed sides, but can carry the standard 4x8-foot sheet flat on the bed floor. Interiors have been given new styles and materials, new center console with shifter for some models, and new amenities and gadgets. Virtually every mechanical and air management system has been refined to limit noise and vibrations that become fatiguing over time. There are plenty of Dodge (and other) heavy-duty pickups for pulling big trailers or hauling two tons of hay, and the decision to keep the light-duty Ram in the light-duty work realm pays dividends in comfort and is beneficial in terms of fuel economy. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround Everything on the 2009 Dodge Ram looks tighter and bigger, yet the truck takes up no more real estate than its predecessor. The illusion comes from more sheetmetal and smaller gaps. For the last 15 years Rams have had lots of space between tires and fenders but the '09 narrows the gap. Side panels have increased in height by nearly 3.5 inches, to close the crevasse between the truck and the ground, yet the approach angle critical to pickup use hasn't diminished. The split between cab and bed is narrower, and there's a lateral seal in it to reduce air turbulence, the side mirrors stand off from the door glass, the sides are flatter, and the tailgate spoiler and windshield are both rounder for improved aerodynamics. Seen from behind where the tires appear almost flush with the body panels, the truck looks quite trim, rather like a European-cut dress shirt as opposed to an American-cut shirt. There is no large seam between the front bumper and the grille and lights, and if the truck does not have fog lights the bumper does not have the outline marks that show it's missing something. The rear bumper is larger, has half-round openings for the sport exhaust on trucks so equipped, and both 7- and 4-pin trailer plugs are fitted adjacent to the rear plate. The tailgate has a torsion bar system that cuts the apparent weight of it in half when you lower it, and like all stock pickups, the aerodynamic efficiency and mileage both drop if the tailgate is left down. Even the least expensive model has some chrome on the front rather than the complete industrial gray that typifies base models and there are plenty of paint choices. On upper variants the mirrors have LED puddle lamps and the headlamps are dual-bulb units, the first since the mid-'90s Sport models, and on the 2009 Sport the front bumper is deeper and body-colored. The more you spend, the more chrome you get. An aluminum hood is used on all models to save weight, and there is plenty of space below it for the aftermarket to fit superchargers and other go-fast goodies. Laramie models come with two-tone paint but you can specify a single shade, and rather than chrome-plating the aluminum wheels plastic chrome covers are used for dress-up. The two longer beds are typical pickup design and include four tie-down loops a few inches above floor level. The RamBox of Crew Cab models has a perfectly rectangular interior with no wheel-well intrusions. The Crew Cab RamBox is 49 inches wide, ensuring it can carry the ubiquitous 4x8 building materials flat on the floor. Side rails with cleats secure the cargo, and a bed divider that locks into place segments the bed into smaller areas or can be flipped over and used as a bed extender with the tailgate down. Along the sides of the RamBox are two locking bins, capable of holding 120 standard 12-ounce cans on the left side (where the fuel fill is) and 130 on the right. These boxes have locking lids, drains, lights and 90-degree opening lids; together the volume exceeds that of a 55-gallon drum. You can fill them with ice and beverages for tailgate parties and camping. They might even hold trailer sway control equipment, though the heavy bars may be pushing the limits of the boxes. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression When one hears Dodge these days, Hemi is usually the next subject that comes up. For 2009, the Hemi has been upgraded with variable intake, revised ports for better airflow, higher compression, and variable cam timing. The Hemi has gained 45 horsepower and 32 pound-feet of torque, now rated at 390 hp and 407 lb-ft respectively, and the powerband is wider. Couple these revisions to a truck that's more aerodynamic, and one result is that the Hemi's Multiple Displacement System (MDS) can operate more often. MDS essentially shuts off half the engine when not needed to save gas, and Dodge says the new truck can be run past 70 mph with the MDS active. The new Ram is a bit quicker, too. Those new power ratings make the Hemi the most powerful full-line half-ton pickup now, with a single-digit advantage over Tundra's 5.7-liter; GM will offer a 400-plus horsepower 6.2-liter V8 in some Silverado and Sierra models but only Crew Cab models. Expect the fastest Ram to run about even with a Tundra, given the Tundra's sometimes lighter weight and its six-speed automatic. We may not be seeing that ad any more showing a Tundra blowing the doors off a Ram while towing boat trailers up a grade. Now the Ram can keep up. Although the Ram's 4.7-liter V8 scores the same EPA numbers as the Hemi, it will realistically get better mileage; you can't use the Hemi's 80 extra horsepower without using more gas. The 4.7 feels the smoothest and is the quietest engine in the Ram line. It uses the same five-speed automatic as the Hemi. The 3.7-liter V6 provides 215 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. This is adequate for trucks that don't tow more than a garden tractor or routinely carry around landscape, handyman or pool service equipment. Although it comes with only a four-speed automatic, proper axle gearing (we'd recommend the 3.92:1 ratio) makes it livable and able to merge at highway speeds. It does not have enough grunt for four-wheel-drive use which is why it isn't offered in a 4WD Ram. Transmissions work as expected with modern, electronic-authority automatics. If you wish to select a gear manually use the thumb toggle on the column-mount stalk or slide the floor-shift left for downshifts and right for upshifts. To revert back to full automatic control, simply hold the toggle + side or push the shifter right for about one second. A Tow/Haul mode is standard and is useful when towing. Activating Tow/Haul may take the truck out of top gear but it does not lock it out; you can still cruise in overdrive with tow/haul on. The Tow/Haul mode keeps the transmission cooler when towing by holding gears longer (and reducing hunting between gears) and shifting faster (and harder). The 4WD systems are 48/52 nominal torque split (a slight rearward bias to power delivery), 2.72:1 low-range for climbing or steep descents, and electrically shifted from 2WD to 4WD without stopping; engaging low-range is done most smoothly rolling at 1-2 mph with the transmission in Neutral. The 4WD systems have a Neutral position for flat-towing a Ram behind an RV or heavier construction truck. Two 4WD systems are available, and only the upgrade NVG246 (not on TRX4) has an Auto mode that allows 4WD-on-pavement use for inclement weather. This system will only help you accelerate and turn under power, it does not help you stop or change directions to avoid something. We found the brakes work well. Dodge revamped the half-ton braking system in 2006 so the brake system has already proven effective. Antilock and stability functions are standard so all you need to do in evasive maneuvers is push the pedal and steer. In daily driving they deliver good feel and are easy to modulate, and although they handle the truck well we'd advise trailer brakes on any trailer more than 1500 pounds (less if your state requires it, of course). A Ram will never be a racecar make but it benefits the same as a racecar when weight is removed from the suspension, axles, brakes and wheels. Using aluminum in some protected front suspension pieces takes 10 pounds off each corner, and the coil/link rear suspension takes 40 pounds off the back and allows more precise wheel control. In addition, friction in the rear suspension as it moves up and down has been cut by 60 percent, so the rear axle is allowed to travel more up and down yet requires less stiffness to keep it controlled. The Ram rides much better than the old one and round-the-block against its competitors comes across as the best blend of ride and control, whether you're on 17-inch wheels or the big 20s. It goes where you point it without drama, the rear end far less likely to 'step' sideways over a mid-turn bump or invoke the stability control, and it has better directional stability with a trailer in tow. Steering is direct like Chevy's but the effort is lower during maneuvers and cruising and ramps up nicely as you push the truck harder. Body roll is kept in check by stabilizer bars at both ends, yet a small amount is apparent as you turn the wheel just to keep you aware; too much roll stiffness can be almost as bad as too little. The stuttering or bouncing trying to accelerate on rippled surfaces has been quelled substantially, and the whole truck exhibits less of the shuddering typical of body-on-frame designs used on all full-size pickups and some big SUVs. Off the highway the new suspension offers a slight improvement in articulation, and keeping the wheels on the ground longer always works best. We had no issues with suspension pieces dragging or being vulnerable to rock or stump impacts. And while we didn't have a sand box handy we could not invoke any axle hop even from full-throttle standing starts in a field. Our only complaints in off-road travel are that close-in visibility suffers from the big hood, making it harder to judge the corners through rocks or trees, and the wide A-pillar base may present its own visibility issues. Also, there's little compression braking in high-range. The only apparent drawback of the new suspension design is that the optional larger fuel tank is smaller by 2 gallons, giving it just 6 gallons more than the standard tank. The Ram felt smoother and quieter to us than the Chevy Silverado did, even on the 20-inch wheels. GM's 5.3-liter engine a tad softer idling but was more raucous when working. To our ears the Ram had the others covered, but every ear has its preferences and many pickup owners like noise. Payload, or how much weight in cargo and passengers a truck can carry varies by cab, bed, drive wheels, and engine. Ram payload ratings run from 1290 pounds (for a 2WD regular cab, short bed, 4.7-liter) to 1850 pounds (for a 2WD regular cab, long bed, V6) and that's for trucks without options; if you routinely carry more than 1000 pounds of cargo it may be better to think about a Ram 2500 or another heavy-duty pickup. Tow ratings top out at 9100 pounds (for a regular cab, long bed, 2WD Hemi with the 3.92:1 axle ratio and 17-inch wheels), but range from a meager 3450 pounds. Most V8 models will be comfortable with a 5000-pound boat and a full load on board. Note the more options you add the less weight you can tow. Also, choosing those stylish 20-inch wheels will knock at least 1100 pounds off the tow rating. We'd go for the 17-inch wheels because we use trucks for towing cars. We found the new 2009 Ram suspension an improvement for towing. With a significant trailer it still drops in back (as all half-tons do), but the extra lateral stiffness inherent in the coil/link design minimized the tail from moving side to side as the trailer pushed against it. Also, the electronic stability control system includes trailer sway control, a nice feature. Cooling systems appear up to the task, and towing mirrors are offered for pulling an eight-foot-wide travel or large box trailer. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior You may recognize a couple of switches or buttons and the center seat section with fold-down center armrest, but everything else inside the Dodge Ram has been redone for the 2009 model year. The seats are new, finished in a durable fabric that you won't stick to in summer heat or be crusty and chilly in a blizzard. The new seats offer good support and plenty of room. We swapped through a few Ram models back-to-back to compare the trim levels and found the seat in the base model is the same design as in the top-line models, and we had no complaints after a full day of driving. We also found we could sit in the back of a Quad Cab for 20-minute jaunts, but a 6-foot passenger will be happier in a Crew Cab where rear dimensions are essentially the same as the front; only the Crew Cab has a center rear headrest. Instrumentation includes a tachometer. The gear indicators are orange with the gear chosen shown in green. The gauges are illuminated amber at night while the controls are bathed in green. The electronic stability control switch (standard) and 4WD switch are on the dash (both 4WD systems are electrically-switched). A typical right-side lever controls the transmission, with a thumb toggle for independently selecting any forward gear; some people with small hands may prefer this to the bulky floor shift that comes with center console trucks. Common operating controls such as lights, wipers and cruise control are on column-mounted stalks. Dashboards are nicely framed, with symmetry on both sides of the wheel and both sides of the truck. Upper models may be ordered with bucket seats and fixed center console that houses storage areas and a stubby T-bar shifter on the driver's side; the shifter has chrome bulges on either side that look suspiciously like buttons but aren't. The only drawbacks to this arrangement are the loss of one seating position and the space under the central dash where you might mount a trailer brake controller, communications radio, or light-bar or plow control. With so many trim levels to choose from you should be able to find one that meets your requirements. We found the basic ST work truck model particularly impressive. Entry-level pickups have a tendency to be penalty boxes lacking any amenity beyond a seat cushion and an ashtray, but we didn't feel penalized at all in the ST. The ST models have plastic door panels that are easy to clean and fairly scuff resistant. The standard radio does an exceptional job in light of the basement price. As trim and price rise so too do standard goodies and optional extras. The key goes in the dash on base trucks but others have pushbutton start, and mid-grade trucks add a voltmeter and an oil pressure indicator. Chrome rings the gauges, leather wraps the wheels on upper models, and the vehicle information center between the larger gauges offers myriad functions from trip computer and transmission fluid temperature to radio data. The MyGig infotainment system with 30GB hard drive is available, along with navigation, dual-zone climate control, rear park sensors with audible beeps and LED warnings above the rear window, and a 150-watt, 110-volt AC outlet. A moonroof is offered on both four door cabs as is a rear-seat DVD entertainment system (though you can't get both on the Quad Cab). Alpine supplies the premium surround sound system, with speakers in the Crew Cab headliner above the back seat and a subwoofer under it. Storage in all models is good, including double glove-boxes. On the Crew Cab, Chrysler claims 42 places to put things (we got bored after counting up the first 18). On some four-doors you can get under-floor insulated storage compartments. The Crew Cab has a pair of AC vents mounted low in back; coat hooks that will hold plastic hangars, and cupholders in the center armrest, but there are no reading lights in back. The tunnel hump in the floor is just a couple of inches high yet plenty wide enough for the center rider to have both feet on the same level. We found we could converse in normal tones at highway speeds back seat to front, with less than average wind, exhaust and tire noise from behind. Even a base model, with a V6 engine never recognized for a quiet or smooth demeanor, does a fine job of minimizing distracting and fatiguing noise and vibrations. We'd rank the new Ram cabin at or near the top of its class. It is closest in design and style to GM and Ford. A Ram Laramie cabin is not quite as smooth and sleek as a Chevy Silverado LTZ cabin and it is not as complicated or multi-hued-and-textured an Ford F-150 Lariat cabin. The Nissan Titan offers good instrumentation and controls, but doesn't quite reach the refinement of the Ram. The Toyota Tundra offers similar features but the instrument panel is less integrated.
