According to the website lotuselansprint.com, there were only 25 US spec (type J) Sprint coupes built. I purchased this car a little over three years ago from a dealer with the intention of doing a full restoration but other projects have taken priority. It’s believed the slightly over 20,000 miles shown on the odometer are original. The car had been off the road since 1989, before the dealer reconditioning and my purchase. The 1989 Pennsylvania vehicle inspection sticker is still on the windshield. Original cars like this are almost nonexistent. The car was initially listed in the summer of 2011 as a "barn find" by an individual in Pennsylvania who I spoke with after he sold the car to the dealer I purchased from. He had only owned the car for a few weeks, enough time to clean it up and list it. He said he'd bought it from the daughter of the original owner who had passed away. Per the daughter, the car was on the road until 1989 when her father became too disabled to drive and that it had been stored in a garage ever since. Her father had purchased the car new from Lotus East in Millerton, NY in 1973. BODY and CHASSIS: Original Lotus chassis. The fiberglass body itself is in amazing original condition with no accident repairs evident anywhere. The paint appears to be completely original (except for the bumpers) with minimal stress cracks and presents well from about 15 feet, but is tired with only a little of the original gloss left. All the glass appears to be date-correct original in excellent overall condition. INTERIOR: Original Colin Chapman “autographed” steering wheel is in very good condition. Seats, carpets, console and door panels are excellent for their age with no rips or tears. Seat belts are new. Original reels and belts will be included but need a rebuild. A new burled wood dash from Prestige Autowood is also included in the sale. Dash top is very good with no cracks. Headliner is worn and would benefit from replacement. ENGINE: Original engine and Stromberg cylinder head runs very strong with excellent oil pressure, new plugs, electronic ignition and gear reduction starter. GEARBOX: Original four-speed Lotus box. Shifts nicely with the “electric switch” precision associated with these cars. Recent heavy duty clutch operates as it should, without chatter or slip. DIFFERENTIAL and DRIVETRAIN, STEERING and SUSPENSION: Front and rear suspension rebuilt with all bushings and hardware replaced along with ball joints and tie rods. New Rotoflex couplings. Excellent steering, ride and handling with no shake, play or other issues. WHEELS and TIRES: Four new Vredestein Sprint 155x13 radials on original Lotus steel “knock-on” type wheels with original trim rings. Aftermarket “knock-on” wrench and jack. Original spare wheel but no spare tire is included. BRAKES: Fluid recently flushed. New pistons, seals, gaskets and O rings. New hoses. Excellent pedal pressure and feel. Handbrake needs new pads and adjustment. ELECTRICAL: Has the original 12v generator charging system. All gauges, lights, signals, fan and wipers are in proper operating condition with the exception of an inoperative fuel gauge. Power windows working properly. Headlights stay down for only a short time after the engine is switched off. COOLING SYSTEM: Original radiator with electric fan. Hoses are in good shape. Have had no overheating issues with this car. FUEL SYSTEM: New alloy fuel tank. Original Zenith-Stromberg carbs. I’m selling because I currently have two other Lotus cars occupying most of my free time, and when I saw the original condition of the Sprint I decided it should be kept that way as long as possible. I have owned this car for 8 1/2 years, and it kills me to sell it, but my wife passed away last month and I need the money to pay funeral expenses. I will get back into Lotus ownership later, but that's another thing. Once you drive a Lotus, you will always want to have one. Because of my situation, I am willing to take a hit on price and accept less than I normally would, so don't be shy and make your offer. The Buy-it-now price is already well below value. I have included the NADA book valuation in the pictures. The Autocheck History Report shows an accident in 2009 with slight damage. Although is says it was a collision with another vehicle, it was not. There is a small Japanese Maple tree just behind the turnaround in our driveway. One night I was pulling out and forgot it was there. I bumped into it on the left rear bumper and corner of the spoiler, causing slight damage to the paint only. I had a small deductible on my insurance, so I had it repaired at a local shop. That's why it was reported. I have no idea why it was reported as a collision with another vehicle, and there is no trace whatsoever of the damage or the repair. There are a couple of things you will want to take care of (I would, but I don't have time) to make this car near-perfect. As it is, I have been using it as my daily driver, and taking it to British car shows. I would not hesitate to hop in and drive the car coast-to-coast right now. I have included a screenshot from SJ Sportscars' website parts ordering page which shows all the parts needed to make everything perfect (prices are in GBP), and those parts are all available (shipping isn't included in that image). Because I need to sell quickly and because there are the things I am listing that are still needed to make the car near perfect, my BIN price is $4,000 lower than I would otherwise ask. My loss is your gain. Remember, this is a 25 year old, hand-built exotic sports car. There were only a total of 559 of these cars imported, and only the 1991 model year. You will probably never see another one on any road you're on. Why drive a dime-a-dozen MX5, or Boxster, when you can drive something that really turns heads? It will not be perfect, and a blast to drive. The things I'm telling you the car needs fixed are to make it near-perfect. It is 100% reliable and extremely drivable as-is. It is, to this day, the best handling FWD production car ever built. I have included a lot of pictures. There is only one blemish on the body that I know of, which is in the center of the front bumper, in the groove. It is only visible very close up, and included in the pictures. I don't know what happened to the car there, because it was that way when I bought it. My guess is that a previous owner bumped into something at low speed (probably parking) and cracked the paint. It looks like it was a DIY repair, but like I said, you have to get down on your knees and get very close to see it. Personally, if I were keeping the car, and really wanted it to be perfect, I might take it to a body shop and get the front bumper repainted, but from ten feet away, you can't even see it. There is some rust on the right lower rear wishbone (pictured). I had intended to replace both rear wishbones on several occasions with stainless steel ones that were being custom made for LotusElanCentral group buys, most recently this past Summer, but those group buys fell through each time. Shortly after I bought the car I inspected the shift cables, based on advice from reading on LotusElanCentral. The OEM cables had plastic fittings and, sure enough, one of them was cracked and wasn't going to hold much longer. I bought a set of AB cables through LEC. They weren't a perfect fit, but all I had at that point. (There are others available now through LEC that are better, and SJ Sportscars has a very affordable replacement/upgrade set available too) With those cables installed, the automatic centering feature of the shifter went away and never came back. It made the shifting a bit rougher (It was very smooth before the cable change), and made finding the right gear something that takes a few days of driving the car to get used to. Once I was used to it, it almost never bothered me again. The only part that ever really bugged me is that sometimes it takes a few tries to get it into reverse. I think/hope replacing the cables will correct that. It's actually possible that I got the cables twisted around each other in the tunnel, and untwisting them may clear it all up. I just haven't ever had the spare time to try it, and now I really don't have time. Like all M100s, when it rains, you will get a little wet. However, I am including a complete set of new roof seals, minus the header rail seal (available from SJ Sportscars - see picture - or from Dave Bean Engineering), which should completely fix the problem, once they're installed and the windows are adjusted for the new seals. Speaking of the windows, two things there. First, the outer glass seals need to be replaced (SJ Sportscars, not expensive). Second, both windows need the sliders lubricated. (I am also including in the sale enough new sliders and clips to replace any that may need replacing.) Until that is done, the driver's window is a little slow moving and sometimes gets a little crooked when closing, which causes it to stick. All you have to do is grab it and straighten it out to unstick it. These things were never an emergency for me to fix, since I have almost never driven it on rainy days in the last three years. Custom Metal Monkey dial faces and LED lighting Alpine iDA-001 head unit (no CD player, iPod connection in glovebox) directly controls iPod.--Requires older iPod. iPod Touch 2nd Edition is included. Alpine 5-channel AMP in the trunk. 8" Subwoofer in the hood stowage area behind seats. Shower cape will go with the car. Hankook Ventus tires mounted in December 2013 and have less than 8,000 miles on them, are perfect. TOMTOM One GPS is hardwired and will go with the car. Maps current 2014. Everything stock I ever removed, I still have and it will go with the car. Spares/Parts that will go with the car: New A-pillar seals, New Falling pillar seals, New Intermediate seals, New Butterfly clips and sliders for windows Parts/Repairs Needed: Header Rail seal (about $400 from Dave Bean or SJ Sportscars) R/H Lower Rear Wishbone has some rust. (See Picture) It looks worse in the picture because most of the hole you see was a mounting hole for that little white plastic clip you see on the brake line. Shifting needs to be cleaned up. The Lotus Elan was a new fiber glass Roadster that used a brand new chassis design that would be used by Lotus for many decades to come. The Elan weighed in at 1,500 pounds and was offered with a DOHC 1557 cc engine with 4 wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering and four wheel disc brakes. For 1967 a 2+2 version was offered to the Elan stable and offered customers more room with similar attributes of the Elan Roadster or Coupe. Lotus announced the final iteration of the Elan at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1970. It was called the Elan Sprint and offered the highest output engine of the entire series of Elans. The Elan Sprint was rated at 126hp and was tested from a stand still to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and was said to be one of the best handling sports cars of the time. The Sprint has become one of the most desirable models of the Elan line and most sought after. Sports Car International has included the Elan Sprint in their top 10 greatest 1960's sports cars and with just 1409 made worldwide these Elans have become increasingly rare and great collectibles. This beautiful 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint Roadster is finished in Colorado Orange with a Black interior. Sold new in Southern California in 1972 to the first owner this incredibly original Elan Sprint has only had three owners since new and comes with extensive documentation, receipts and records that date back to 1972. This matching numbers Elan Sprint is finished in its original Colorado Orange paint and shows very well for its age. There are a few areas where stress cracks have come through and a few areas that have been touched up over the years but overall the finish and quality of the paint is still in excellent condition. The interior is believed to be original minus the beautiful new wood dashboard and brand new boot and convertible top. Having been a CA from new and then to New Mexico for the past few years, this Sprint roadster benefits from dry climate and excellent storage. There is no rust to be found anywhere on the car. The chassis is excellent and free from any corrosion or rust. The engine starts right up and idles very well. The car shifts into gear with ease and accelerates beautifully. All of the hydraulics in the clutch are brand new so all of the gears are smooth and effortless with no slippage from the clutch. The rear diff seals and bearings have just been replaced as well as the rear diff mounting bushings. The rear suspension has been rebuilt and all new bushings and rear struts and housings have been done. The frront suspension has just been rebuilt including new coil over shocks, service wheel bearings, all upper and lower ball joints and bushings and new tie rod ends. A new exhaust has just been put on the car. New oil pan gaskets, new cam cover gaskets, new plugs/wires/coil have also just been recently done. The suspension and steering feels outstanding, very nice and tight. The ride is excellent and very solid. The engine pulls very strong and sounds great. The engine was rebuilt 2500 miles ago and is all documented with receipts. All of the electronics in the car are in operating condition including the dash lights, interior lights, headlights, tail lights, turn signals and brakes lights. The small rubber "donuts" un the back of car are in excellent condition and do not appear to be leaking any fluids. The car comes with its original tool roll, jack, spare tire, knock off tool, original US spec Acorn style knocks offs, original shift knob, original radio, owners handbook and service book with Lotus signatures and stampings from new. This car is documented by the Lotus factory as being Colorado Orange over Black and having engine number T/25112. This is a rare opportunity to own an incredibly original and exceptionally well documented 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint Roadster. These Elan Sprints are the ultimate iteration of Britains famous sports car and rare to find one that is so complete with such great patina and history. the world in 1989. There were only 3,885 built worldwide by time production ended in 1992. Of those, only 539 were federalized for the U.S. and a mere 117 were specifically designated for California. These hand-built/low-production sports cars are considered (even to this day) one of the most reliable Lotus cars ever built. Much of this is due to the fact that the Isuzu 1.6L turbo engine was used as its power plant. This workhorse motor was found to be extremely reliable, inexpensive to maintain, and parts were readily available. Weighing only 2,250 pounds, the dual overhead cam/16-valve engine with its air-to-air intercooled turbocharger made this roadster a pleasure to drive. And, it still managed to sip gas and get nearly 30mpg. Kensington Motors, LTD of Long Beach, CA sold this Elan when new on December 30th, 1992 to a local Orange County resident. This first owner kept the car until 2005 and used it as a light weekend cruiser. When sold to the current owner, it only had 30,000-miles. For the past 10-years, this owner has primarily used it as a daily driver. This owner is a car enthusiast and understands how to properly maintain his cars. All services since new were either performed at the Lotus dealer or a very well respected independent Lotus service specialists. The Lotus Elan was a new fiber glass Roadster that used a brand new chassis design that would be used by Lotus for many decades to come. The Elan weighed in at 1,500 pounds and was offered with a DOHC 1557 cc engine with 4 wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering and four wheel disc brakes. For 1967 a 2+2 version was offered to the Elan stable and offered customers more room with similar attributes of the Elan Roadster or Coupe. Lotus announced the final iteration of the Elan at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1970. It was called the Elan Sprint and offered the highest output engine of the entire series of Elans. The Elan Sprint was rated at 126hp and was tested from a stand still to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds and was said to be one of the best handling sports cars of the time. The Sprint has become one of the most desirable models of the Elan line and most sought after. Sports Car International has included the Elan Sprint in their top 10 greatest 1960’s sports cars and with just 1409 made worldwide these Elans have become increasingly rare and great collectibles. European Motor Studio is very proud to offer this gorgeous Pistachio Green /White with Gold Leaf trim 1972 Lotus Elan Sprint Roadster. This Elan Sprint left the Lotus Hethel production line in November of 1971 and was invoiced to the US. The car is a blue plate CA car is believed to have been in Southern CA its entire life. The body was just stripped down and repainted in its original colors of Pistachio Green with white and gold leaf trim. The interior has been completely redone in original black vinyl along with the wood dash, vinyl dash top and all of the carpets and doors. The correct factory Robbin Egg top is brand new and fits on the car properly. The car has just been completely sorted with a full service including numerous belts, hoses and seals. The top half of the engine was recently rebuilt and the carbs were just rebuilt using correct Lotus rebuild kits from JAE. All of the electrical in the car has been sorted and everything appears to be functioning and operating as it should. Both power windows go up and down, all the turn signals are operating, the brake lights, taillights, headlights, interior dash lights, reverse lights and the three lights to the right of the steering wheel are all functioning as designed. Both driver and passenger windows each have a small scratch on them from the windows going up and down. The vacuum headlights raise and lower with ease by the touch of the switch. The car does not run hot and the cooling fans quick in as designed. The car starts right up and runs and idles like it should. For auction is my Esprit Turbo, a truly great car. This one has only 24000 miles. I am the third owner having purchased it 4 years ago after a yearlong search. The work done is documented below. Everything works as it should. The paint is original and shows the wear of 20+ years. The previous owner bumped the left front bumper with his snow blower and cracked the paint. Tires are 3 year old Kuhmo Escatas, not the best handling but I wanted to keep the Revolution wheels. I have the certificate of provenience and documentation from Lotus Cars which goes with the car. 1972 Lotus Europa Twin Cam 5 speed. This Europa has undergone a VERY comprehensive 3 year rebuild to its original specification. The only real change to the car has been the addition of a 5 speed gearbox from a later Europa Special. Prior to my ownership, the Twin Cam motor was completely rebuilt. I doubt that it has more than a couple thousand mile on it. I have owned/rebuilt/lost a fortune on many Lotus car in the past and at have rebuilt/restored at least 4 Europas. I learned a lot and have used everything I learned on this car. It is outstanding. The only reason for sale is another Lotus has followed me home and will require all I own to put it back together. 2416R has approximately 47K miles. I have no reason to doubt this is correct. The motor was rebuilt approximately 3K miles ago. When used regularly, it will start right up without the choke and idle smoothly. I have resealed/re-gasketed the engine so no oil leaks, oil burning or blow by on start up. It is tight. The oil stays clean and consumption is negligible. Both carbs have been rebuilt and are now semi-adjustable--for Strombergs--and work great. the carbs are currently running a Pipercross filter, but I've got the original air filter and box. Starter is new, alternator rebuilt. Petronix ingnition Brakes are excellent. Both boosters were removed prior to my ownership. I have either removed or bypassed them on previous cars just so there would be two less things to go south. I do have them and they go with the car. The body & chassis unit are straight as can be with 0 signs of any previous crash or rust damage. Completely stripping the car to bare glass revealed a straight damage free upper body as well. It was incredibly poorly painted, but the crack repair work underneath was of very good quality. We fixed-correctly-any damage or cracks we could find and repainted the whole car-windows and trim all pulled-to the correct shade of its original Lotus Lagoon Blue. The paint code is L14 and is etched onto the VIN tag in the trunk. All seals, gaskets and trim emblems were replaced with new. Headlights are Lucas Tri Bar. All bumpers, door handles and chrome are excellent. Windshield trim is adhesive chrome trim and is in in great shape. All corner brackets are present. Glass is original and good. Rear window seal and stretcher are new. Doors open and close perfectly. NO DROOP. The chassis is excellent. Rust free and straight. Never out, never damaged. All bushings, joints, tie rod ends are new. Shocks are all fully adjustable from Banks Service in the UK. Rear output shafts are all newly sealed. All wheels were stripped and painted with correct gunmetal inserts. Lotus badges are new. Tires are correct, 175/185 front and rear sizes per factory spec. The car was corner/weight balanced. It handles like nothing you've ever driven. I have a 7 and an Elan. No contest, this will run and hide from either. And pretty much anything else. The gearbox is a 5 speed out of a Special. It has been rebuilt and resealed. New clutch, T/O and Pressure plate. The incredibly ridiculous shift linkage was removed and rebuilt with all new Lotus parts and with hand made brass bushings. If you know Europas, you know the shifter is their weak link. It can make an otherwise lovely Europa a huge chunk of awful. This is the best I've ever driven. Still a bit to get used to; you will be hard pressed to find another Europa that shifts this smoothly. The cooling system performs excellently. The original radiator was removed, tested, cleaned, repaired as needed and replaced. A new cooling fan, pusher style, was installed utilizing a manual switch. The car does not overheat. Period. The interior is the the original beige color. All carpeting is new. Headliner custom made using correct material from Banks. Banks console has been padded and covered. Door panels are matching. Dash top is fiberglass core, from Banks, padded and covered with French stitching on the leading edge. New shift boot. New window switches. Dash is from Maderia Concepts. The "Lotus" on the radio plate will come off. It is the original dash re-veneered. Stunning. Original steering wheel was re covered. All new rockers. They all work. Gauges all rebuilt. All work and light up, too. The interior door light works. WOO HOO. New instrument bezel. Seats are original and re-padded. Window motors rebuilt. windows go up and down relatively quickly in their new felt runners. Where I to keep the car, my future "To Do" list is actually pretty short. I would go for stainless steel gas tanks and a cassette water pump. Neither of these areas have shown any indication of failure. I just find these mods to be good insurance for longevity. I would also rebuild and replace the brake boosters. I'd add hood struts. Since the easiest way to do these tasks would be to pull the motor, I decided to wait until it was urgent, or wintertime. I'd give the motor compartment a good detailing at the same time. I have the original spare, tools, workshop manual and some parts. Not much, but some. This is not your average Europa. I, and many others, busted our collective asses on 2416R and it shows. I know this thing inside and out. I wanted to get as close to a brand new Europa as I could. I used almost 30 years of Lotus experience to do it. Not just as new, it has some real neat upgrades for performance and reliability. Yes RELIABILITY. I would attempt to drive this anywhere. I've had it on a few long trips without incident. I have pics of the work and pretty much all of the receipts. There are no excuses or disappointments here. This is a spectacular Europa. I've sold a lot of Lotus stuff on ebay, made a few good pals doing it. I do not want to jeopardize any of that by selling poo. If you want the car, give me a call.
