Vehicle Review Vehicle Information ?Overview ?Introduction ?Walkaround ?Driving Impression ?Interior ?Summary Overview The F-TYPE represents Jaguar's return to the full-size sports car segment, focusing on performance, agility and driver involvement. Available as a coupe or convertible for 2015, the F-TYPE offers several engine options which include a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 in 340-hp and 380-hp outputs for the F-TYPE and F-TYPE S and a 5.0-liter supercharged V8, producing 495-hp for the convertible F-TYPE V8 S and 550-hp for the coupe F-TYPE R. All engines are backed by an eight-speed 'Quickshift' transmission with full manual sequential control through either the SportShift selector or steering wheel-mounted paddles. Features across the F-TYPE lineup include Intelligent Stop/Start, sport suspension, Jaguar Smart Key with keyless start, automatic Bi-Xenon HID headlights with dynamic leveling, leather and Suedecloth seating surfaces, 380-watt Meridian audio system, and eight-inch touch-screen. Moving up the F-TYPE range adds additional performance features such as Adaptive Dynamics (variable damping), limited slip or electronic active rear differentials, active sport exhaust, increased wheel sizes and higher performance braking systems. For 2015, the F-TYPE convertible carries over with minimal changes, but adds a coupe to the lineup with most of the same features and options as the convertible. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Jaguar F-Type was introduced in 2014, save the XK220 the first two-seater from the brand in decades and Jaguar's first sports car since the E-Type of 40 years prior. F Convertible oozes style and sensuality, comes well equipped and offers performance that backed up the look. For 2015, Jaguar has added a Coupe to the model lineup, with V6 and V6 S matching the Convertible, the 495-hp V8 S of the soft-top upgraded to the 550-hp V8 R Coupe. We won't dare debate which is the more attractive, only note the Coupe is even more solid, less expensive and has considerably more trunk space if you don't travel light: James Bond style at a third his Aston's price. There is also a very limited-edition Project 7 Convertible, the most highly-strung, least-practical F-Type. F-Type is not a traditional Jaguar with a supple ride or burled walnut woodwork. By Jaguar standards it's a sports car with generous power, superb firm suspension and a driver-centric, thoroughly modern cabin. By sports car standards it is a modern luxury sports-GT car: relatively big, heavy, swathed in leather and fitted with near-endless amenities. With shapely bodywork mistaken only occasionally for an Aston Martin this is one of the prettiest news cars extant. There's just enough heritage in the styling to evoke the E-Type without any hint of retro; compared to an F-Type, Porsche's 911 Carrera reminds of a Vivaldi concerto…the same thing 50 different ways (and years). Jaguar designer Ian Callum hasn't yet been knighted, but expect it any day. The low-slung cabin features very supportive if none-too-cushy seats, clear gauges, logically grouped controls and a big buttress that both separates the driver and passenger zones and gives the latter a hand-hold. Convertibles offer enough trunk space for a pair of overnight bags, while the Coupe swallowed a 24-inch roller and some smaller gear. Others may offer more advanced gadgets or driver assistants but the F-Type includes as standard things like navigation, leather/suede upholstery and a name-brand 10-speaker sound system that many alternatives charge extra for. Perhaps bets of all, the F-Type has an engaging soundtrack, plenty of power and crisp dynamics to deliver performance expected from a sporty Jag. It will put up some impressive numbers, and if you have good car control bring a smile to your face as it destroys rear tires drifting. In late 2014 Jaguar announced the 2016 F-Type, which has some noteworthy additions. These include the option of all-wheel drive on a V6 S automatic, a six-speed manual gearbox for rear-drive V6 models, a 550-hp R Convertible replacing the V8 S, and all-wheel drive standard on V8 F-Types. We're most excited about the manual gearbox, noting all-wheel drive will help initial acceleration but also add weight and cost. The F-Types primary target is the Porsche 911, which costs about $6,000 more than a V6 S Coupe and $15,000 more in Convertible form. Although you could argue the F looks better than any challengers, V6 shoppers might consider the Audi S5, BMW M4, Chevrolet Corvette, Mercedes-Benz SLK and Porsche Cayman as alternatives. F-Type V8 competition might include the Audi R8, BMW M6, Maserati Gran Turismo, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, Porsche 911S, and it makes a good substitute for an Aston Martin Vantage for tens of thousands less. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround At its debut the F-Type Convertible gathered accolades for its appearance, and the only thing that some consider better looking is the Coupe version. We like the Convertible, especially top down, but the stubby yet sleek rear end, generous hips and singular arc of the Coupe's roofline we like better. Jaguar takes its heritage of shapely cars seriously. Jaguar Director of Design Ian Callum (who drives his hot-rod '32 Ford Roadster on the Motorway) won't compare the F-Type to the legendary E-Type, which Enzo Ferrari (yes, that Ferrari) is said to have called the most beautiful sports car. So he rightly weighs the F-Type against other 21st century sports cars, built around today's standards for safety, lighting and economy. Shapes make more compromises today. The front splitter and rear valance are aerodynamically driven, as are the rocker lines. The V8 gets vanes under nose and flat side sill extensions, to manage airflow. There are a number of intakes and vents in the front fascia, hood and fenders, some functional, others aesthetic. The big black egg crate grille is framed by shark-like gills on each side. The longitudinal headlamps are smooth bending trapezoids, with cool LED outlines on two sides; from their top corners begins a sharp crease that runs over the front fender, past the door and onto the uplifting rear deck. Door handles are flush with the body, and extend with a touch or key fob. Wheels vary from 18 to 20 inches in diameter with performance level, and finishes across the range. Alternate color brake calipers within them similarly speak to relative performance. Convertibles have twin rollbar hoops with fairings that give them depth so they don't look like steel bars. Behind the rollbars is an area that stores the top, then the sensuous rear deck over a moderate-size trunk. The multi-layered and insulated top lowers in 12 seconds at up to 30 miles per hour, and serves as its own tonneau cover. Coupes have a long narrow hatchback, with better integrated center brake lamp and pop-up rear spoiler; we occasionally wished a rear wiper was available though it blows clean at speed. Side windows behind the doors improve quarter visibility and visually pull the haunches even higher. Beneath the cargo cover is 65% more trunk space than the Convertible, with the same bin underfloor, and nearly twice as much room if you remove the cargo cover. The hatch can be powered but it's hardly necessary. The rear diffuser is cut to enhance the body line around the rear wheel, and serve the requisitye aerodynamic functions. The long LED tail lamps are thin elegant trapezoids that wrap forward all the way to the back of the rear wheels. There's a graceful ridge on top of the rear fenders that flows down to the center of the tail lamps. We like the single twin exhaust pipes that come out the center of the valance V6, more than the double outboard twin pipes in the V8. The twin-tip center exhaust is a nod to the E-Type of 1961. The rear spoiler is invisibly flat, until the Convertible reaches 60 mph or the Coupe 70. It cants up and rearward for stability and takes about a third off the Coupe rear window view, a bit less on the Convertible. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The F-Type is all about performance, exhaust noise and grip on the road, and this applies regardless of body style or engine. In the unlikely event they don't see you coming, the exhaust report certainly announces the cat has arrived. With 340 horses and a quick-shifting automatic (one observer asked who made the twin-clutch, a type of transmission known for its speed and used by Porsche and other sports car builders) the F-Type is no slouch, and the pipe's trumpet crescendos with revs. F-Types are the rare supercharged cars where you seldom hear the supercharger over the exhaust note. However, our money would go to the V6 S. Although the 380 hp is just 40 more than the base V6, it uses a shorter axle ratio for better performance at the cost of one EPA mile-per-gallon. Since we nudged 30 on some highway cruises in a V6 S coupe, above even base model ratings, we think the real-world difference will be neglible, completely dependent on driving style rather than car. Forty horses for $13,000 is a lot to ask, but the S also gets larger brakes, 19-inch wheels, active sport exhaust, adaptive dynamic suspension and added features. Those all add choice and make the F a better sports car. V8 models include all that equipment, plus an electronically controlled differential to help translate power to forward propulsion. The V8 S Convertible's 495 hp can readily smoke the rear tires with minimal provocation, unless you leave traction control engaged (with launch control) to moderate wheelspin at low speeds. The V8 R Coupe has 550 hp and weighs a bit less, so everything happens even faster. Switch any dynamic-mode F-Type to snow-mode and gas pedal and transmission response are both dulled so it doesn't become the best-looking Zamboni ever. The automatic Jaguar dubs Quickshift is, and it works better around town than automated manuals. The marriage with the engine is well sorted, and you can shift for yourself using steering wheel paddles or the stubby lever when your mind and eyes see more than the programmers did. F-Types also come with auto start-stop that shuts the engine off under certain conditions (in D not S, sufficient engine temperature and voltage, low AC load, etc.) and automatically restart it when the brake pedal releases. It's neither the best nor worst we've encountered and can be switched off should you wish. An elegant ride, subtle sounds and poised control are common in Jaguar sedans; here you'll get a sports-car ride and enough exhaust noise to rival a race car or Corvette ZO6, but it is still poised. The ride is firm and there's no comfort setting on the adaptive suspension, only dynamic mode that tightens things up some more. That is best reserved for nice roads and decent racetracks. Part of that is because the default normal adaptive dynamic suspension is very good. It gets body motion signals 100 times a second and steering wheel data 500 times a second, constantly setting the shocks for ideal control. It's a big reason the F-Type stays nearly flat with very little body roll in transitions, braking nosedive or acceleration squat while it posts competitive performance metrics. It also means at low speeds and cornering loads the suspension is allowed to move freely so speed humps taken at 25 mph result in a bah-dum sound rather than crash and bang. Finding an F-Type's limits requires some awareness, first of the car's maximum width (which is behind you) and tall, regulation inspired hood. Second, while the steering is quick and precise, and turn-in immediate the F doesn't feed the driver tactile information as well as a genuine lightweight sports car like a Mazda MX-5 (Miata) or Subaru BRZ, or the primary competitor Porsche 911 (or Cayman). You can comfortably cruise around in an F-Type and the average owner will likely never approach its limits nor squeal a tire, but if you ever get the chance to find out on a closed course and/or with professional instruction, you'll enjoy how easy it is to re-live juvenile delinquency. The Coupe is stiffer and lighter than the Convertible, the more precise of the two in discussions about handling or driving fun. Moreso though is the difference between a V6 S and a V8, the former better balanced, more than adequately fast for public winding roads, and easier to drive quickly and extract maximum performance. The V8 is faster (providing there's adequate traction) has more bellow and bluster, and is better on a $/hp basis. Like many sports cars it's also more than needed (and electronically limited to 186 mph so tires don't get stressed), and not as easy to drive quickly; switch off traction control and it's ready to loop anyone not giving the gas pedal due respect. With all this power and near-enough two tons of weight brakes are important, and those on the V6 S and V8 S we sampled were more than capable: Quick bite, progressive retarding and good pedal feel. There are three braking systems and our samples were the middle version; the optional carbon-ceramics are likely beneficial only for track-day encounters or never changing them. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior F-Types cabin smacks of sports-luxury GT, with a driver-centric layout, plenty of features and attractive materials. Sports cars tend to be minimalist, efficient places but Jaguar has a thing for stylish interiors; you'll find no classic wood here but there is leather. Leather-and-suede is the default upholstery, which goes to full leather as price increases. An extended leather pack further covers the cabin in leather, including nearly everything from the armrests up all the way to the glass roof. The finish has a silky hand but it's not squeezably plush, rather it feels solid and durable like a hand-made messenger or carry-on bag. You can search out some plastics and a few center-console faux finishes weren't universally admired, but you'll also find substantial carpet out to the door pillars (no shoes scuffs to look at) and all the way up the bulkhead behind the seats. The passenger will have to reach around their big console grab handle adjust their climate or seat heat, but most will be amused with touch-to-operate glovebox and reading lights or memorizing their fully-adjusted seat until they need the bar for its intended function. The standard 380-watt Meridian sound system is good, the twice-that-power surround sound really good. Both performance seats offer three-person memory and plenty of adjustment and support, though those more than 6'4 or so might prefer the less bolstered standard sport seats. You sit low in the F-Type, hips often near the door sill, and these performance seats are quite firm, not stiff like fixed racing shells but never mistaken for plush. A flat-bottom wheel that accompanies the sport seats allows plenty of knee clearance and a good gauges view, the latter simple analog tach and speedometer framing bar-graph fuel and temperature gauges or the various menus to toggle through. You need hands at 9 and 3 to use the paddles, but the steering's quick enough that pretzeled arms only come into play on hairpin bends. On S models the start, dynamic/snow switch and shift paddles appear anodized orange. Top center vents open only as needed or you wish, some ooohh-aahh stuff to go along with the beating light in the starter button. Climate control is effective…it isn't a big room, and the driving controls are all grouped around the shifter. Aft of that are cupholders, center armrest storage and a head-high bin up back, complemented with moderate door pockets and useful glovebox. Configurable ambient lighting is available where not standard and lets you choose from six colors, but like the gauges lights it automatically reverts to red when dynamic mode is selected. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Jaguar F-Type is a worthy successor to the legendary E-Type. It combines sports-car performance with a luxurious cabin and seductive bodywork no competitor can match. All are F-Types are quick and can dispatch a winding highway with aplomb, but most of us prefer the 380-hp V6 S Coupe's balance to the V8's firepower. Vehicle Review Vehicle Information ?Overview ?Introduction ?Walkaround ?Driving Impression ?Interior ?Summary Superb luxury sedan with heritage and sporting legacy. The XJ is Jaguar's top of the line model, known for pampering occupants with luxury amenities, a silky smooth ride and effortless power. The XJ is built on a light and strong all-aluminum structure. Three regular wheelbase trims are available; XJ, XJ Supercharged, and XJ Supersport. Three long wheelbase trims are also available; XJL Portfolio, XJL Supercharged, and XJL Supersport. Three variations of 5.0-liter V8 are available; a 385-hp naturally aspirated, a 470-hp supercharged, or a 510-hp supercharged. A six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters sends power to the rear wheels. An adjustable air suspension is responsible for the XJ's impressive road handling abilities and luxurious ride. Safety features include dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, and front side-impact airbags. Anti-lock brakes, traction control, and electronic stability control are standard. For 2012, the XJ Supersport gains a standard rear seat entertainment system and the XJL Supersport receives added rear seat enhancements. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Jaguar XJ enhances Jaguar's legacy of sporting, stylish cars. The Jaguar XJ uses a smooth and satisfying 32-valve 5.0-liter V8 making 385 horsepower (470 hp in the Supercharged model), and a silky 6-speed automatic transmission. The XJ is designed to be a performance luxury sedan that succeeds in European markets. It aims to coddle and appease the luxury buyer and provide thrilling performance for the enthusiast driver. Completely redesigned for 2011, the Jaguar XJ carries into 2012 unchanged save for some option packaging and some new interior color combinations. Over decades, Jaguar has developed a reputation for building low-slung sedans with an impeccable blend of handling and comfort. This latest XJ suggests they are back on track after years of XJs that were not so exciting. The XJ was awarded 'Best Luxury Sedan' by Winding Road online magazine, in both 2011 and 2012. The sleek XJ abandons the delicate roof pillars of the past, with a single flowing line from windshield to tail lamps. Longer than a BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class, the Jaguar XJ won't be mistaken for anything else. In the enveloping cabin, leather and wood are mixed in Italian shapes and English materials. Seat contour and bolstering seems appropriate to the car's mission; it's not too tight or sporty, and the driver's adjustable bolstering comes in handy on curvy roads. The standard full-length panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light and offers a sense of spaciousness, as well as allowing a sleek coupe-like profile and lithe stance for which Jaguar cars are known. The Jaguar XJL is a long-wheelbase model that adds nearly 5 inches to the overall length, with longer rear doors and glass. This increases rear legroom by 5 inches, making an expansive 44.1 inches of rear legroom total. The best ride quality comes with the Jaguar XJL with 19-inch wheels. Cars this long aren't meant to be canyon carvers or autocross warriors, but the Jaguar XJL also handles extremely well when driven hard in the corners. Under the XJ body is a rigid and lightweight aluminum structure that contributes to this handling precision, and also to economy, acceleration, and ride comfort. Jaguar is the leader in sophisticated all-aluminum construction. The 5.0-liter V8 engine, designed and produced at Jaguar facilities in Coventry, England, is all aluminum. It features 32 valves, direct injection, independent variable cam timing, cam profile switching, and a variable geometry inlet manifold. The 385-horsepower engine has more than enough power for any luxury sedan occasion, although you can go faster. The Jaguar XJ Supercharged model adds 85 horsepower and 40 foot-pounds of torque, cutting one second off the 0-60 mph time, to less than 5 seconds. You have to boot the gas pedal to feel the difference, but when you do, it blows your shoes off. The special-order Jaguar XJ Supersport adds another 40 horsepower and 40 more foot-pounds of torque. That one will blow your shoes and your socks off. The sixth-generation twin vortex Roots-type supercharger lacks the whine of old; it can't be heard because of the air intake that was designed to isolate and lose the supercharger whine. The XJ is long-legged, meant to get up there at high speeds and stretch. It's so smooth and commanding that 90 mph feels like 70. In fact, it wants to run 90, not poke along at 70, so be careful. The sweet 6-speed manual-automatic transmission uses adaptive gear-change strategies based on the type of road and the driver's application of the gas pedal. In manual mode, the transmission stays in the driver's chosen gear to redline, and the paddle shifts are sharp. The XJ uses fully independent suspension, with steel springs in front for precision and air springs in back for the best level ride among varying loads. Ride quality and bump absorption is very good, even on 20-inch wheels over pock-marked roads and expansion joints. But with those 20-inch wheels and wide tires, at 70 mph the XJL tends to follow freeway grooves; at faster speeds, wide-tired Jag goes straight as an arrow. The XJ uses big brake rotors and calipers, and giant ones on the supercharged models, with their top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). The brakes are supported by the full suite of electronic controls. The stability control can be turned off, but we never found the need while testing the limits because the system is not intrusive at all. The Jaguar XJ competes with the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS, Maserati Quattroporte, Aston Martin Rapide, and Porsche Panamera. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The Jaguar XJ expands the work done with the mid-sized XF by bringing a more sporting, sleeker look to Jaguar's flagship that just oozes style. Central to this are lots of glass and no building-size pillars for a roofline that seamlessly blends into the trunk. At more than 200 inches long the XJ is not a small car but it disguises its size well, much like the smallest Learjet more than three times the length of an XJL, and the XJ doesn't look nearly as imposing as a BMW 7 Series or Audi A8. The Lexus LS looks rather plain next to the Jaguar. Surprisingly, the XJ design works as well on the standard wheelbase as it does on the long-wheelbase XJL. A larger rear door and side glass are the only way to differentiate them. Pulling the lower door sheetmetal inward toward the rear wheel enhances the hips covering the rear tires. The only design element that incites any controversy is the black polycarbonate panel between the rear doors and rear window, a pillar normally body-colored on other cars. From dead astern it looks merely a wider rear window, but from any other angle it tends to look better on cars with dark paint or deeply tinted rear windows. Exterior ornamentation is kept to a minimum with the requisite mesh chrome grilles and chrome spats in the outer lower nostrils, a badge behind the front wheel which includes supercharged if it applies, bright window trim, the trunk badge, Jag's leaper in the middle, chrome strip across the rear bumper and dual quadrangle tailpipes. Apart from larger standard wheels and the front fender badge there is no trim distinction between XJ and XJL or standard or supercharged cars. With 152 light emitting diodes outside, the lighting elements take up where chrome leaves off. Front light housings carry two large and two small circular lights, with a strip of LED running lights below. The tail lamps are arranged as three vertical columns to mimic a cat's claws, and cleverly concealed in plain sight at the top of the rear light housing is a clear bump, like an animal's eye, that hides five red LEDs for side marker light duty to meet regulations without spoiling the flowing body lines. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Jaguar XJ's 385-hp V8 is no more powerful than the engines found in other cars in this class but the XJ is lighter by 300 to 400 pounds, thanks to its aluminum chassis and body, and that helps its acceleration and fuel mileage. The engine has more than enough power for any luxury sedan occasion. But you can go faster. The Supercharged model adds 85 horsepower and 40 foot-pounds of torque, cutting one second off the 0-60 mph time, to less than 5 seconds. You have to boot the gas pedal to feel the difference, but when you do, it blows your shoes off. The special-order Supersport adds another 40 horsepower and 40 foot-pounds of torque. That one will blow your socks off. We found all three V8s smooth as a bottler's private label, quiet at cruise or loping around town, while bringing a welcome throaty purr under heavier throttle. The sixth generation twin vortex Roots-type supercharger lacks the whine of old, and can't be heard even with the stereo off and windows windows down. That's because of the air intake that was designed to isolate and lose the supercharger whine. The 5.0-liter engine is designed and produced at Jaguar facilities in Coventry, England. It's an all-aluminum 32-valve V8 featuring direct injection, independent variable cam timing, cam profile switching, and a variable geometry inlet manifold. The multi-hole direct injection system sprays pressurized fuel (up to 150 bar) into the center of the combustion chambers. The variable camshaft timing system has its own Jaguar spin, as well. The inlet camshaft profile switching changes the characteristics of the engine for the torque, power or economy that may be needed at any moment. The XJ is long-legged, meant to get up there at high speeds and stretch. It's so smooth and commanding that 90 mph feels like 70. In fact, it wants to run 90, not poke along at 70, so be careful. The XJ's sweet 6-speed manual-automatic transmission uses adaptive gear-change strategies based on the type of road and the driver's application of the gas pedal. This transmission anticipates well and shifts smoothly. Full air-suspended cars like the Mercedes S-Class have a slight edge in ultimate ride cushiness, but they haven't the steering precision of the Jag, while others have multiple electronic chassis controls to help deal with the weight but impart a sense of artificiality. The XJ doesn't have such artificiality. Steering is light but firms up, as does the suspension damping, with the touch of a button. It may not post the ultimate handling numbers of an Aston Rapide or Maserati Quattroporte or Porsche Panamera, but the handling is balanced, the ride quality competitive, the look clearly better in one case, and the cost at least $20,000 less. We did have one issue, however, which we believe to be caused by the wide 245/40YR20 front and 275/35YR20 rear tires. At 70 mph, over an unsmooth freeway, the car tends to wander with the grooves on the highway. We haven't felt this on XJ models with the standard 19-inch wheels; in fact, we've never felt it on any of the many XJs we've driven in previous years. Big rotors and calipers, even bigger on supercharged cars, are backed up by the full suite of electronic controls. Although you can switch off the stability control, we never found the need while testing the limits because the system is not intrusive at all. A standard-wheelbase XJ Supersport will be the quickest model and, depending on tires fitted, should be the best-handling as well. But the plain XJ managed just fine thank you, so think of the Supersport as the XJ to have if you think you want to drive a racetrack. If you think you want to get to a racetrack comfortably in minimum time, any XJ will do the job. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Jaguar XJ is a true flagship, filled with fine leather and wood, as much Scandinavian as English it seems. It's stylish, luxurious and sporty, although there are places in the design and materials that make us ask if this is the best Jaguar can do. The XJ comes standard with leather of course, front seats both heated and cooled, with dual-zone climate control. XJL and supercharged models add piped leather upholstery and massage front seats with 20-way adjustment and four-zone climate control. The five upholstery choices include contrasting cabin trim, stitching and piping; Ivory can be paired with four colors. Some XJs have suede headliners. Supersport models get a unique leather color, four unique woods or piano black trim and a leather headliner. A 1.5-inch band of wood (we like the walnut) or carbon fiber moves in a sweeping curve from the doors under the windshield like a gunwale on a small cabin cruiser, the outward bend providing an air of spaciousness. It's like a step, separating levels of horizontal leather on the dashboard. There's a hump and visor like a ballcap over the instruments, which are clear enough, but they aren't real, they're a rendition that look not unlike animation. The optional steering wheel is stylish and original, mostly leather with a thin wood band. There are two fat climate control vents in the center of the dash, and two smaller ones at the edges. They look like the nose of a torpedo sticking out of its tubes, or a WW2 bomber engine without the propeller, and they have plastic chrome rings like a model of Saturn. They'd be perfect in a '58 Buick. There's an analog clock on the dash, with no numbers, just hard-to-read hashmarks, and more cheap chrome plastic. It's neither pretty nor functional. We can only guess that Jaguar thinks it's classy. With all the seat adjustments, any size driver can get comfortable. Seat contour and bolstering seems appropriate to the car's mission, which is to say it's not too tight or sporty, and the driver's seat adjustable bolstering comes in handy on curvy roads. Rear seats are also comfortable and heated. XJL models add more than five inches to rear accommodation, making an expansive 44.1 inches of rear legroom total. The XJL costs $3000 more, so if you carry passengers or have a family it could be worth it, especially since the XJL weighs less than 100 pounds more. Reading lights, glass overhead, and venting add comfort to the rear. The instrument panel is a 12.3-inch screen with renditions of analog gauges on it; it looks like animation, or like a decal of a gauge that you might find on a kids' pedal car. The tachometer needle doesn't seem to move as quickly as the engine revs. On the steering wheel, in addition to the cruise and audio control, there's a scroll surrounded by arrows that yields driver information; it's a piece leftover from when Jaguar was owned by Ford, as Fords have the exact same little dial. We found most of what we wanted to know, although we never figured out how to get the tachometer, odometer, and DTE (distance to empty) on the screen at the same time. Let alone the tachometer, which also kept disappearing if we pressed the wrong arrow at the wrong time. And besides DTE could only be accessed by a button on the turn-signal stalk. Jaguar makes it complicated. The transmission gears are selected with a rotary dial that pops up on the console, except when you manually shift using paddles at the steering wheel. Above the shift dial are the audio and climate controls, and above them is the 8-inch touch-screen that we found to be a bit of a non-intuitive mess. We kept having to refer to the thick manual, and even then it felt like a mess. Naturally iPod other inputs are included, and the hard drive has enough space to rip 10 CDs uncompressed, a good thing as the available Bowers & Wilkins 20-speaker, 1.2-kilowatt sound system will clearly reproduce any fault in your source material. Outward visibility is fairly good given the expanse of glass, and the bright bi-Xenon headlamps, although the passenger C pillar creates an over-the-shoulder blind spot. On the freeway, the standard blind-spot warning will alert you, although we're not major fans because of all the false alarms. We found the parking sensors so loud as to be distracting; perhaps this can be adjusted. Trunk space is average for the class and impeccably finished down to the aluminum runners in the floor. Unlike some competitors with run-flat tires the Jaguar carries a spare under the floor (deleting the spare adds 3 cubic feet). The power trunk lid can be programmed for opening height lest you or your garage overhead is petite. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Jaguar XJ does everything you expect in a luxury sedan, with room, amenities, quiet and thrust, with a sporty side always in the background that offers more driver interaction but one that never changes the car's personality. Eye-catching lines and serene cabins that marry contemporary design with both traditional and modern materials convey a sense of style that more antiseptic modern conveyances can only wish for, and that the XJ has the performance to back up. The 2 and 4 models come with a direct injection 3.6-liter V6 300-hp engine while the 4, 4S and Turbo feature the larger 4.8-liter V-8; the S and 4S models making 400-hp, whereas the Turbo adds twin-turbocharging for 500-hp. The Porsche PDK double-clutch gearbox is the only transmission choice, and all models are equipped an auto start-stop feature for increased urban fuel economy. The body appears to be a four-door sedan but with a coupe-like profile and a power liftgate, rather than a typical trunk, for access to the spacious luggage area. Standard safety features include ten airbags, bi-xenon adaptive headlights with LED daytime running lights, rain sensing wipers, full LED rear lighting, four belt pretensioners and electronic traction and stability control. A small sample of optional tech features includes a 6-disc CD changer, Bose surround sound, Burmester surround sound, front and rear ParkAssist, an electronic logbook and voice control. For 2011 the Panamera has added V6 models to round out the line-up. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComIntroductionThe Porsche Panamera has quickly earned credentials as one of the world's best large sports sedans. It has the luxury, space and performance to go toe to toe with cars like the Aston Martin Rapide and Maserati Quattroporte, not to mention more familiar luxury-sport models such as the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. Panamera's core engineering values will feel very familiar to longtime Porsche enthusiasts. For the Panamera's second model year, Porsche has introduced the 2011 Panamera V6. Powered by a 300-horspower 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine, with optional all-wheel drive, this new base model might be the most impressive Panamera of all. We can't think of another large luxury sedan that delivers the V6's combination of exhilaration, practicality and impressive fuel economy (18 mpg city, 27 highway, according to the EPA). The Panamera's unique two-box exterior design is based on two objectives: Porsche styling heritage and space efficiency. The look seems to be a love-hate proposition, with haters ahead slightly and very little middle ground. Yet those who can embrace the styling will be rewarded with a truly substantial, satisfying automobile. The Panamera is only slightly smaller than the BMW 7 Series, and it delivers the sporting performance of a world-class sports sedan with the comfortable ride and refinement of a luxo-cruiser. Those extremes required a lot of careful engineering. Porsche builds the body from lightweight materials and puts the engine low and as far back as possible. The Panamera's standard adjustable suspension can change the ride from soft but stable to race track-ready. All Panamera models are fast, as is expected from Porsche. The new V6 hits 60 mph in as little as 5.6 seconds, despite the impressive mileage. The V8-powered Panamera S models drops the 0-60 time to 5.0 seconds, and raises top speed to 175 mph (from 160). The Panamera Turbo cuts that time to a sports-car bashing 3.6 seconds, with little if any turbo lag and a rush of power that pins you back in your seat. The Panamera is truly roomy, with back-seat headroom, legroom and hip room that rival that of a Mercedes S-Class sedan. A standard full-length center console divides the Panamera into four distinct and comfortable seating positions. The feel from the driver's seat is much like that in Porsche's iconic 911, only slightly higher off the ground. All of the seats are supportive without being too firm or too deeply bolstered. The space inside still surprises us. The rear seat has enough head room for an NBA point guard and plenty of leg room, too. The other thing that surprises is the level of refinement here. This is the most luxurious Porsche ever, well appointed and equipped. Navigation is standard. Leather upholstery is standard, as is the choice of carbon, aluminum or five varieties of wood trim. The fit, finish and quality of the materials rival any competitor. Its cruising manner is impressively smooth. Indeed, the serene cruising demeanor belies the world-class handling and performance available whenever the driver starts pushing harder on the pedals. The hatchback design makes the Panamera useful as a family vehicle. With the rear seats up, the rear cargo area is as roomy as the trunk in a mid-size sedan. With the seats down, the Panamera has more cargo room than a luxury wagon, with easy access to a fairly expansive load floor. Porsche reached the production milestone of 25,000 cars just ten months after the Panamera was launched in October 2009. That's a lot of volume for a Porsche, and it may be because the Panamera offers the best of many worlds. It's a fine luxury sedan and one of the best sports sedans anywhere. It's fast. It handles like a dream, carries four in comfort and has plenty of cargo room, and even the Turbo delivers better mileage than other cars of similar capability. The Porsche Panamera doesn't come cheap, and as it is with any Porsche, options can add 50 percent or more to the model price. Yet on another level, given its impact and relative performance, the base Panamera V6 might be considered a deal. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComWalkaroundThe Porsche Panamera's appearance is polarizing. Many critics who otherwise praise the car for its performance, space and comfort consider the styling a weak spot. Some are fond of the look, if only in ugly-duckling fashion. The V6 Panamera, introduced for 2011, has a few distinguishing features. The trim surrounding its side windows is matte black, as opposed to chrome on the V8 models. The V6's exhaust tips are oval, with a single outlet on each side, rather than two pair of round tips. It also comes standard with unique, five-spoke 18-inch wheels. The four-door Porsche is a substantial car. Exterior dimensions such as length, width and wheelbase surpass those of mid-size luxury sedans such as the Audi A6, BMW 5 series and Mercedes E-Class, and come within a few inches of full-size models such as the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. Yet the Panamera body shell is built from a cocktail of lightweight materials that includes boron steel, aluminum, magnesium and high-tech composites. Hidden parts such as axles and some suspension components are aluminum. As a result, with a minimum curb weight of just 3880, the Panamera is lighter than those smaller, mid-size competitors, and nearly 1000 pounds lighter than the full-size competitors. This is important, because the lower weight contributes to the Panamera's relatively high fuel-economy ratings and sports-car-like handling feel. Thanks to its racing heritage, Porsche pays particular attention to airflow around the body. The Panamera is the first luxury four-door with a full underbody shield, even covering the driveshaft and mufflers. This reduces both wind resistance and lift. The radar sensor for the available active cruise control is positioned to minimize the disruption of airflow, though it degrades the appearance of the front end (unacceptably to some). A cleverly hidden active rear spoiler rests under a chrome trim strip and pops up at speed to increase rear downforce. Panamera's shape flows from two key factors: packaging, and heritage. Porsche wanted a four-door that looks like a Porsche, and that meant elements of the iconic 911 sports car. These influences include the signature shoulders or haunches around the rear wheels, a hood that sits lower than the front fenders, and a front end with no conventional grille above the bumper. Given its role as true four-passenger automobile, the Panamera also needed the rear seat space of a sedan and the cargo utility of wagon. These crucial parameters led to a rounded four-door hatchback design instead of a traditional three-box sedan. The hatchback allows for generous rear headroom, cargo utility and a sporty coupe-style profile. It also creates rather unconventional proportions, and a car that looks awkward from some angles. The length added by the rear doors and the high rear roofline seems to stretch the car too far. Gaze at the Panamera and there's a strong urge to chop about 18 inches out of the roof and sharpen the roof's slope to the rear. But if Porsche did that, the Panamera would look a lot like a front-engine 911. The four-door's bulbous rear end reminds us of the old 928. The net effect is a bit ungainly. If the design isn't elegant, it nonetheless creates a presence in traffic. That large rear end stands out, and the Panamera attracts lots of attention when it creeps through a parking lot or pulls up to a restaurant. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComDriving ImpressionAny Panamera is enjoyable to drive, and all are easy to drive. The new-for-2011, V6-powered Porsche Panamera lacks nothing, and it impresses with its fuel economy. It's a truly efficient, luxurious four-passenger car with Porsche DNA. The Panamera Turbo delivers truly breathtaking performance that's almost too easy to control. The V8-powered Panamera S feels lighter and livelier than the Turbo, and can be even more entertaining on winding roads. All feel as if they're milled from one giant block of billet aluminum. That's due to the car's advanced engineering and extensive use of aluminum, magnesium and composites in the body structure. The base Panamera is powered by a 3.6-liter V6, which is essentially the 4.8-liter V8 in the Panamera S with two cylinders removed. The cylinder V is angled at 90 degrees, and the six-cylinder features a balance shaft to smooth its operation. It also delivers the latest in control and materials technology, with high-pressure direct fuel injection, infinitely variable valve timing and variable valve lift. It has an auto start/stop feature to save fuel by seamlessly shutting down and restarting at red lights. It uses a dry sump oiling system rather than a standard oil pan, so it can sit low in the chassis for a sports-car center of gravity. It delivers peak output of 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, but weighs just 404 pounds with the transmission attached, according to Porsche. We discovered there's plenty of go in the V6 Panamera, probably as much as anyone ever needs on the road. That power comes smooth and strong no matter the road speed, and the 7-speed transmission always seems to pick the right gear in full automatic mode. Porsche's PDK gearbox is actually a clutch-operated manual that shifts itself. It's the best dual-clutch transmission going, and one of the smoothest. It works fabulously as an automatic if left in Drive, but it still gives the Panamera more of a performance bent than the typical luxury car. It's not quite as smooth as a conventional torque-converter automatic. You'll notice this most on moderate, coast-down stops, when the PDK lurches ever so slightly as it downshifts. With the V6 engine, the Panamera can scoot from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 5.8 seconds, according to Porsche, with a top speed of 160 mph. The all-wheel drive version is even quicker (5.6 seconds to 60), despite its greater weight, thanks to an even better distribution of traction. Yet the V6 Panamera still delivers 18 mpg city, 27 highway, according to the EPA, or 18/26 mpg with all-wheel drive. We matched those numbers during a 400-mile run at 75 mph. The combination of acceleration, exhilaration and fuel economy from the V6 is genuinely impressive for a car this large, and speaks to its engineering depth. From here, the Panamera gets even faster. The 4.8-liter V8 in the Panamera S and Panamera 4S models bumps horsepower to 450 hp, with the same willing response across its rev range as the V6. Acceleration starts with a burst and remains strong for passing punch, and the 0-60 time drops to 4.8 seconds while top speed increases to 175. We actually found the Panamera S more fun to drive on the race track than the Turbo. Significantly lighter, the rear-wheel-drive S felt more agile and nimble, more tossable, more enjoyable. On the race track, the Turbo felt bigger and heavier by comparison, though it posted quicker lap times due to its superior acceleration performance. In short, we give the big thumbs up to the S model. It is the sweet spot in terms of sensible performance. The 4S falls in between the two in terms of that feeling of agility, still feeling more agile than the Turbo but not as agile as the S. The 500-hp turbocharged V8 in the Panamera Turbo is brutally quick, knocking the 0-60 time down to 3.6 seconds. Kick the throttle and the acceleration knocks you back in your seat, not letting up until you do, or at 188 mph, whichever comes first. Thanks to the standard direct injection, turbo lag is minimal, if at all existent. Sure, the Turbo is overkill, but it sure is fun. And thanks to Porsche's overall efficiency, not even the Turbo is brutally anti-social. With auto start/stop, the efficiency of the dual-clutch PDK transmission and Panamera's comparatively svelte weight, no model carries a gas-guzzler tax (a familiar feature in this league). The Panamera S delivers 16 mpg city/24 mpg highway, while the Turbo is rated 15/23 mpg. Even beyond the engine bay, the Panamera drips high technology. All models feature a Sport button, while those with the optional Sport Chrono Package add Sport Plus. This feature allows the driver to tailor a host of controls, including suspension firmness, transmission shift points and the aggressiveness of the throttle, over a range from maximum comfort and economy to maximum performance. The optional adaptive cruise control almost literally drives the car, using both the gas and brakes to maintain a specified gap to cars ahead, down to 20 mph. All Panameras come with adjustable suspension. The V6 and S and have electronically variable shock absorbers and conventional steel coil springs, while the Turbo adds air springs (optional on other models). The air suspension is self leveling, and it also varies spring rates. It can lower the car one inch for better handling or raise it an inch to help the front-end clear abrupt driveway transitions and other hazards. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) with active anti-roll bars is also available. To counteract body lean in turns, the system twists the roll bars to make them firmer. It can also disconnect the roll bars to improve straight-line comfort on bumpy roads. These systems can transform the Panamera from firm and extra precise to smooth and refined with the touch of a couple of buttons, or they can be left to work on their own by measuring the driver's intent, based on use of the gas, brakes and steering. The variable suspension lets the Panamera drive like a luxury car or a race track-ready sports sedan. We know, we've experienced this, and it's an impressive feat. This four-door always feels smaller than its considerable size. Many adjustable suspensions are either too soft or too firm, but that's not the case with the Panamera. The base suspension delivers a smooth but controlled (dare we say excellent) ride in the softest mode. The Sport setting makes the car react more quickly, with less side-to-side sway, without ruining the ride. Same with the steering. The Panamera's is not quite Porsche 911 pure, but it's impressive for a big four-door, even with the all-wheel-drive. It gives the car a very nimble, responsive feel, and it always lets the driver know how the car is gripping with feedback from the tires back through the steering wheel. The steering reacts immediately to anything more than a twitch on the wheel, but it's not twitchy. It grips everything, particularly with the performance tires on the largest available rims. That's the payback, in the luxury sense, for everyday driving. With the summer-duty performance tires on 20-inch rims, the Panamera's steering grabs at every little nook and cranny in the pavement. While that might be appropriate for a four-door Porsche, it's not necessarily familiar luxury style. The high-performance tires effect ride quality as well. Their short, stiff sidewalls hit little seams and pavement edges hard, and while the suspension comfortably absorbs bumps, the tires crack and deliver a little shock, sometimes with a corresponding, audible chunk. Buyer beware: Actually drive a Panamera with the big rims and high-performance tires before choosing them over the standard all-season packages. We prefer the 18- and 19-inch wheels. We had the opportunity to test the Panamera's potential on the 14-turn, 4.1-mile Road America road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Though large, the Panamera was at home on this long racetrack, with quick steering and a relatively flat attitude through turns (especially with PDCC). The Panamera's willingness to change direction and respond to driver inputs puts it in a league with the world's best sports sedans (such as the BMW M5), and even some of the better pure sports cars. The PDK transmission shines on the track as well. It's almost race-ready when the driver chooses the Sport or Sport Plus modes, which hold gears longer to keep power more readily available. Those who want to shift manually can tap the steering wheel buttons in any mode, but in Sport Plus we found that the PDK automatically chose the appropriate gear for track driving 95 percent of the time. Road America has a lot of long straights, and the Panamera's standard brakes weren't entirely up to that challenge of repeated, hard braking from very high speeds (for many sessions). In some cases (with some drivers), there was a pulsation that may have indicated warped rotors. On the road, the brakes are perfectly capable. Buyers who plan to regularly participate in track days should consider the expensive but impressive composite ceramic brakes. It's not surprising given they have to slow 4,000 pounds of Porsche. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorThe four-door Panamera might have the most appealing interior in any Porsche so far. It's certainly the most luxurious and best executed. Fit and finish are excellent in all Panamera variants. While its luxurious, almost bespoke quality can match some of the richest sedans in the world, the Panamera retains the sporting, playful ambience that has identified Porsche cockpits for decades. Materials in the base Panamera are top-notch, with supple, soft-touch surfaces, and several upgrades are available. The V6 and S models come standard with three partial leather upholstery choices, while the Turbo gets full-leather upholstery in five color choices or four two-tone combinations. Interior trim is available in carbon, aluminum, or five real-wood options. Our V6 had black lacquered wood, and it was striking. The full-leather option adds rich, heavily stitched leather to the dashboard and doors. Those who really want to personalize their vehicles can opt for an alcantara roofliner (standard on Turbo) or extra leather on just about everything, including the rearview mirror, steering column and air vents. It's all very handsome. The driver's position is low for the typical luxury sedan, and similar to that in the 911 sports car. The standard seats may be the best there are. They're not fancy, in terms of a million adjustments, but it's easy to get them right, and they deliver a fabulous combination of support, grip and long-range comfort. The base power seats upgrade to 14-way adjustment in the Panamera Turbo, while buyers who love fiddling can choose the 18-way sport seats in all models. The biggest problem inside the Panamera, perhaps the only potential deal breaker, is rearward visibility. The side mirrors are triangular shaped, and don't offer very broad scope. It takes a while to get comfortable with them, especially for drivers who rely heavily on the side mirrors in traffic. The rearview isn't any better. The rear glass may seem large, but its angle makes it more like a slot through the rearview mirror. Peering over the shoulders backing up, the fat rear pillars block large arcs of the surroundings. The obstacle warning helps, but what you'll see is a pictograph of potential obstacles on the dash, rather than the obstacles themselves. The back-up camera is optional and we recommend getting it. It should be standard. It makes backing up safer because it's easier to spot a child and easier because it's easier to spot obstacles. On a practical basis, it makes parking quicker and less stressful. The V6 Panamera has a manual tilt-telescope steering column. It works well enough, but like that back-up camera, the power tilt-telescope should come standard in this league. The steering wheel itself is fantastic: thick and wrapped in tactilely pleasing leather, with just a tiny bit of give when you squeeze. A button behind the bottom spoke heats the wheel independently of the seats. The manual shift buttons on the wheel work one way, with upshifts on one side and downshifts on the other. There are five gauges in the instrument binnacle, all large and easy to see. The tachometer sits front and center, black numbers on white background, with a gear indicator and big digital speed readout at the bottom. That's good, because the radial speedometer is marked in hard-to-read 25-mph increments. It sits to the left of the slightly larger tach, while a multi-function display sits to the right. Both of these contrast with the tach, using black backgrounds and white characters. The multi-function display shows a range of data chosen by the driver, from trip information to vehicle systems to navigation directions. Two smaller gauges at the edges complete the package: fuel level and coolant temperature on the right, and oil pressure and temperature on the left. Some important switches are spread around the steering column. Turn signals are conventionally operated with the left side stalk, while the lights are operated with a radial switch on the dash, next to Porsche's unconventional left-side ignition switch. Wipers are controlled with the right-side stalk. Cruise control functions fill a third stalk, to the lower left, making room for redundant audio and phone controls and trip-computer buttons on the steering-wheel spokes. Stalk-mounted cruise control isn't optimal, but Porsche's system works a lot better than that used by Mercedes-Benz, which tends to get in the way of simple turn-signal operation. The Panamera's window switches are perfectly placed in the driver's armrest, right at the fingertips when the left forearm is resting. The reading lights, sunroof switch and obstacle-warning control are collected in the headliner above the rear-view mirror. The main barrage of switches, of course, are clustered in a center pod that flows up from the Panamera's console and around a seven-inch, touch-screen video/navigation monitor. There are upwards of 32 buttons on the dash and console, with another 18 buttons surrounding the screen. Porsche has opted for a button for every possible command rather than a centralized controller along the lines of BMW's iDrive. At first the array is a bit daunting, but operation gets simpler fairly quickly with familiarity. The buttons are logically grouped by function and easy to reach. A central controller might look more elegant but they tend to be harder to learn, and far more distracting while driving. On the down side, the Panamera's standard navigation system can be hard to figure out. Audio systems begin with a single CD, 11 speakers and 235 watts of power, and we found it quite good. The optional Bose surround sound system, with 14 speakers and 585 watts, is loud and clear. It matches anything in most luxury cars. The 16-speaker, 1000-watt Burmester surround sound is as clear as any auto stereo we've heard, and we've heard some good ones. Storage up front includes a pair of cupholders in the console that can hold change, keys and other items when they're not occupied by drinks. There's also a shallow center-console box, a fairly large glovebox, and good-sized door pockets that are lined with fabric to eliminate the annoying sound of sliding glasses or CD cases. More than storage, what jumps out is the way the full-length center console creates four distinct seating pods, each with all the room and comfort the vast majority of passengers will ever need. This is one sports sedan that doesn't compromise rear seat room. The rear seats are essentially buckets like those in front. The rear seats don't adjust in the V6 or S, but they're still comfortable and grippy, with backs reclined at a comfortable angle. Adjustable rear seats are optional on all models. And there's a lot of room. We found that a 5-foot, 8-inch rear passenger could stretch legs fully behind a 5-foot, 8-inch driver, with feet tucked under the front seat. Rear-seat headroom is even more impressive, accommodating occupants well over 6 feet tall. The copious space would make the Panamera a fine chauffer-driven vehicle, though giving up the driver's seat wouldn't be easy. In standard trim, the rear is nicely finished, with four reasonably sized air vents that can be adjusted or closed completely. Rear seat heaters and four-zone climate control are optional. There's almost as much storage in back as in front: two cup holders in the center console and a shallow bin in the folding armrest, with small, lined pockets on the doors and map pouches on the back of the front seats. Cargo space is impressive, too. With the rear seats up, there is 15.6 cubic feet of space behind them, or about as much as the typical mid-size sedan's trunk. Four suitcases fit easily in the Panamera, and access is easy thanks to the hatchback. A shade-type, pull-out cargo cover is optional, but the standard lift-up cover works better. It attaches with cables to the liftgate, and opens when the standard power gate rises. It's also easy to remove, but then the driver has to find some place to store that big panel. Switching the Panamera to max cargo mode is a matter on pressing one button on each of the seatbacks. The seatbacks drop one at a time, creating a nearly flat load floor with tie downs, and a maximum 44.2 cubic feet of cargo volume that you can reach from the rear or through the side doors. That's more than what's available in mid-sized luxury wagons such as the BMW 5 Series or Audi S6. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComSummaryIn short order, the four-door Panamera has become an in-demand addition to Porsche's lineup. The V6-powered base model, new for 2011, delivers satisfying performance with Porsche values and class-leading fuel economy. All Panameras perform well on the street and the track, and all have more than enough passenger and cargo room to qualify as no-compromise luxury sedans. Available all-wheel drive makes the Panamera a viable all-season car for the Snow Belt. We think it's one of the world's best luxury sports sedans. We're able to rationalize the styling. Kirk Bell reported from Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, with Mitch McCullough in Los Angeles; J.P Vettraino test drove the Panamera V6. The Base is powered by a 265-hp 2.9-liter flat six-cylinder engine, while the S boasts a 320-hp 3.4-liter flat six-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection. Both are mated to a six-speed manual transmission; Porsche's PDK seven-speed double-clutch gearbox, including manual shift mode and steering wheel paddles, is optional. The Cayman is equipped with a power retractable spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, leather seat trim, air conditioning, cruise control and a CDR-30 audio system with MP3-compatible CD player; S trims add 18-inch alloy wheels and an upgraded sound system. Standard safety features on both trims include Porsche Stability Management (PSM), four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, front and side seat-mounted airbags with a curtain airbag for head protection, and a tire pressure monitor. Popular options include Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), a roof-mounted transport system, Bi-Xenon headlamps with dynamic cornering lights, ventilated seats, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and a universal audio interface that can control external audio sources such as an iPod or USB stick.Following a significant refresh last year, the second-generation Porsche Cayman carries over unchanged for 2010. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComIntroductionFew manufacturers build cars that deliver consistently better driving experiences than Porsche. From one end of the lineup to the other, throughout the years, a Porsche has always represented a terrific driving experience, and the Cayman models maintain that highest standard. The Cayman is a sweetheart of a sports car. It's one of the best-looking sports cars on the road and it drives as good as it looks. There are two versions, the Cayman and the Cayman S. The Cayman has a 265-horsepower 2.9-liter flat-six engine, and the Cayman S features a 3.4-liter flat-six with 320 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual is standard on both, and Porsche's sophisticated, seven-speed double-clutch gearbox, called the PDK, is available as an option. Among colors and interior trims alone there are thousands of combinations, so exclusivity with any one individual car is well within reach; Porsche's line of Exclusive options and paint hues to order merely expands the realm of possibilities. Those choices also potentially expand the cost by a huge amount, since you can get almost anything on a Cayman but doing so can as much as double the price. The Cayman is related to the Boxster, and some will argue that the Cayman is merely a fixed-roof version of the Boxster, which is a convertible. We disagree. The Cayman has its own feel and character. It can serve as a luxury grand-touring car for two with heated and ventilated leather seats, Bose sound system, and navigation system. It can serve as a sports car with superb driving dynamics, wonderful sounds, and excellent driver involvement. It can serve as an entertaining commuter car with decent mileage, a view out, dual trunks and drive-everyday-versatility. It can serve as a weekend racer with adjustable suspension, advanced drivetrain, and racing-style brakes. Its two trunks offer significantly more cargo space than does the Boxster. Plus, we love the way the Cayman looks. It's one of the prettiest cars sold today. Changes to the Cayman line for 2010 are minimal. The Porsche Communication Management system (PCM) has a larger, 6.5-inch screen and the number of controls has been reduced by half. The PCM can also be used with external memory sources and can provide Bluetooth connectivity. Standard equipment for 2010 is Porsche's CDR-30 sound system, with monochromatic display and integral CD and MP3 player. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComWalkaroundThe Cayman looks the road-going equivalent of a race car, no surprise, given Porsche's success on the world's racetracks. The overall impression is a shape designed to most efficiently cover the working parts and two people. The hood, front fenders and doors are similar to those on the Boxster, but the remaining bodywork is different. Some refer to the Cayman as a Boxster hardtop but this in inaccurate on many counts, both cosmetic and mechanical, and therefore unfair to either car. They have different missions and appeal, illustrated perhaps best by Porsche offering a fixed hardtop for the Boxster. A Cayman somewhat resembles the animal it shares a name with (a crocodilian reptile), especially in the tail that slopes down below the hips formed by the rear fenders. From the head of the windshield the top surface nearly duplicates a droplet, the low-drag aerodynamic shape found in everything from blimps to dry-lake speed cars. You could run a straightedge from the top of the rear window to the rear spoiler and barely fit a thumb under it, the sides protected with ridges to direct airflow and stiffen the hatch frame. Aerodynamically, the Cayman is a slippery car. The least aerodynamic model, the Cayman S with PDK, has a coefficient of drag of 0.30 and less than two square meters of frontal area. A rear spoiler ahead of the back bumper breaks airflow to keep the car on the ground, and at 75 mph the spoiler rises for increased stability in high-speed turns. Horizontal rows of LED taillamps reminiscent of the Carrera GT frame the rear end. The exhaust is centrally located, with one outlet for the Cayman and two for the S, and nestles between small-scale diffuser panels. At the front, the headlight clusters are reminiscent of the Carrera GT and the classic 550 of five decades earlier. A horizontal LED light tube serves parking light duty, the signal is in the light cluster, and rounded fog lights are in the outer grilles. The wider center grille bottom sweeps up to define the inner edges of those outer grilles, with a spoiler lip on each side. In profile, the Cayman is enhanced by fenders and roofline gently merging together, this particular aspect vaguely familiar to Maserati and Aston Martin owners. The line defined by the door bottom sweeps upward aft of the door, becoming the rear edge of the vertically slatted engine compartment air intakes, and almost mirroring the line along the side window that sweeps the quarter window to the roofline. An optional rear wiper parks vertically on the left side where it least disturbs the driver's rear view and adds the least wind noise. Aerodynamics will clear most water at speeds above 40 mph but the wiper is handy for reversing and urban driving. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComDriving ImpressionPorsches have had flat-six engine designs since the iconic 911, and the Cayman retains that proven layout. With direct fuel injection, the standard Cayman engine is 2.9 liters and delivers 265 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, while the Cayman S has 3.4 liters, 320 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Either engine bristles with authority for the first seconds after a cold-start and then settles into a hum set off by the slightest ticking characteristic of direct-injection engines. The over-square engines rev easily to 7500 rpm and develop peak outputs between 4400 and 7200 rpm, yet despite that the flexibility and power-to-weight ratios mean you can drive very conservatively and effortlessly if you like; once the engine was fully warmed up we obeyed the upshift light on an S, accelerating in sixth gear from 35 mph on a mild grade with no problem at all. So it can be quite calm and pleasant in the Cayman. Porsche claims acceleration for 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds for a manual Cayman and 4.6 seconds for a Cayman S PDK in Sport Plus mode (4.8 seconds in normal mode), so every Cayman has more than adequate acceleration and will top out at 163 mph. These cars aren't built on a more-is-better approach to speed, but rather a superlative combination of speed, handling, and brakes that allows all of the performance to be used. All Caymans get a six-speed manual as standard, and gearboxes don't come much better. First through third gear ratios are spaced for maximum acceleration, and fourth through sixth are relatively tighter, to maintain acceleration at higher speeds; you will not find yourself cruising the freeway at 1400 rpm as in a big-bore sports car. Clutch and shift action are on the light side, and the Cayman is happier with a relaxed driver than one slamming through gears. Porsche's new double-clutch PDK gearbox is the alternative, with a wider overall ratio spread across the seven speeds but always one available for maximum thrust. This is a sophisticated box that will run fully automatically or under full manual control. You have to learn how to best get it in motion, both forward and backward. Tight parking maneuvers are a bit more challenging, and it really isn't built for idle-speed creeping. But it delivers extremely fast gear changes with no brutality. It also rates a few miles per gallon higher on the highway cycle, though any Cayman delivers good fuel economy for a car with this level of acceleration and top speed. A worthwhile option is the limited-sip differential. The Cayman doesn't have serious issues getting its power to the ground, yet for optimum performance there is always a choice. About the size of a personal pizza, the brake discs don't look that big, especially lurking inside a 19-inch wheel, until you realize the typical 2,900-pound car has brakes more the size of a dessert plate. Cross-drilled, vented and equipped with multi-piston calipers, the brakes are magnificent: Pedal reaction is instant, braking force directly related to how hard you push the pedal, fade non-existent, and stops short and stable with minimal nose-dive and the rear stays flat. Credit not only the brakes but the low, rearward weight bias and sticky tires. Note that all Caymans have the same diameter brakes but the S gets red-painted calipers. Porsche's composite ceramic brakes are an option on the Cayman S (at close to 10 percent of the purchase price) and identified by yellow calipers. They are among the best in the world and take many pounds of unsprung weight off the front end, but unless you have 19-inch wheels and frequently drive on track, the performance of the standard brakes is the envy of most motorcars. If you're not sure you need the ceramic brakes, then you don't need them. As with the other controls the steering is moderately weighted and uses little assist; it's easy to steer the Cayman around your garage without starting it. Response is quick and predictable, the relatively thin-rimmed wheel telling your hands all you need to know and nothing you don't. Effort is never so light you'll be palming the wheel in complete turns and never so heavy you feel like you're working hard. Caress the car like a person and it responds accordingly; be a ham and your date will know you didn't take Porsche's driving school. With the structural stiffness enabled by the presence of the fixed roof, the Cayman is very rigid. There's no flex or twist to speak of, so the shock and spring rates can be kept firm without upsetting the occupants and roll stiffness keeps the car balanced while letting each wheel do its own work. The addition of Porsche's adjustable shock damping (PASM) allows the comfort for everyday or rougher road use with the taut suspension desired on a track and lowers the ride height; you will need a fairly smooth public road to find yourself going noticeably quicker with Porsche Active Suspension Management set in Sport mode. Locating the engine, the heaviest part in the car, in the middle and down low results in a low center of gravity, and this means transitional response is superb (changing direction left to right or acceleration to deceleration, for example). Not only do the performance tires deliver considerable grip for ultimate cornering speed, on winding roads you feel only a fraction of the level of weight transfer typical of lesser cars. One of our favorite ribbons of real estate was accomplished a good 5-mph faster than in a front-engine sports car, and in the realm of automotive dynamics that's a runaway. And this was done with the Cayman's PASM in standard ride mode and the stability management system in the default On position. This system is very well programmed to give a driver some leeway in vehicle attitude; if you feel it reining you in on a public road you're trying too hard and if you feel it on a track it means your line or speed can very likely be adjusted for the better the next time around. We wouldn't be out a limb calling the Cayman the best-handling Porsche ever built and one of the world's best. Whether it has the fastest lap times, test figures or sales demand, we can't think of a better handling, better driving sports car. The biggest handling advantage we've seen in the 911 is its ability to handle well on bumpy pavement. The Cayman S comes standard with 18-inch wheels and tires an inch-plus wider than the 17s on the Cayman; either model can be had in a range of 18- or 19-inch wheel styles, all with the same tire width. We would be hard pressed to change from the 18-inch Michelin Pilot Sport tires because, while the 19s might look better or work better on track, the 18s offered great handling, a relatively quiet, good ride, were very easy to find the limit of and recover once we found it, and are significantly less expensive and offer more choices at replacement time. People look at you in amazement when they ask about the roof points and you answer ski rack, like no one in their right mind would drive this to a ski run. But why not? With a decent set of winter tires on 17- or 18-inch wheels, the engine's weight over the drive wheels, superb manners for the winding roads that lead to most ski areas, seat and steering wheel heaters, heated washers and mirrors, and no room for your ride-bumming boarding buddies, why wouldn't you? For those driving the undulating, winding road we would recommend the bi-xenon headlight upgrade. The standard lights are quite acceptable for most purposes but the wide area of the main beam has a very narrow vertical band, and if the road is angled or on a hill the edges become less defined. Using the fog lamps helps, but the bi-xenons are better. In fact, along with PASM, it's the only option we'd add to an S to make the purest, driver-centric Cayman. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorPhysics and the ergonomics of car control define the Cayman interior, the basic design unchanged in racing Porsches save removal of the various amenities, carpeting and air conditioning, and addition of a roll cage and seat harnesses. The Cayman cabin is appropriately finished, neither as austere as some sports cars nor as overtly luxurious as expensive GT cars, yet you can push to either extreme as wishes and option budget allow. Trim can be ordered in wood, aluminum, carbon fiber, suede or painted. Multiple sizes, styles, and materials characterize steering wheel choices, with or without redundant controls, and there is even a pair of concealed cupholders, on the passenger's side. This is not the best car for sipping a cappuccino on the way to work. The Porsche 911 is better for that, the Panamera is even better, but we recommend enjoying your cappuccino at Starbuck's before climbing back into your Porsche. The standard seats appear simple and restrained compared to the skeletons or over-embroidered armchairs on some sports cars yet they do an excellent job holding you in place while allowing free movement of feet, arms, and head. Manual adjustment for fore-and-aft position and cushion height, with electric recline, are standard and longer-legged drivers might appreciate the extra adjustments offered by the power seat option. Even with manually adjusted seats we had a pair of 6-foot, 4-inch individuals inside without scuffing heads, knees and elbows. There is plenty of space for feet to move around despite the compact dimensions. The steering wheel has manual adjustment for the tilt/telescope function and the handbrake is an easy grasp on the left side of the console. The gas pedal is floor-hinged for easier heel-and-toe shifting, and there's a good dead pedal for your clutch foot. The shifter is right where you want it to be and slips into the gear desired every time, a hefty detent preventing getting reverse when you downshift into first for a tight corner. On PDK cars the floor shift works conventionally and the upper-spoke steering wheel shifters both downshift (pull toward you) and upshift (push away). The driver faces a three-pod instrument panel dominated by an 8000-rpm tachometer with inset message and digital speed display. A compact speedometer is on the left, coolant and fuel level to the right, with the bottom segment of each relegated to information displays. On PDK cars the gear display is in the right dial. You may order painted instrument dials to match or counterpoint exterior paint, including the Sport Chrono stopwatch if you order it. Any control you might use frequently while driving is on a steering-column stalk. The headlight switch is on the left, next to the ignition switch, and all others are in the center panel ahead of the shifter. These are grouped with suspension and transmission controls (on cars so optioned) along the bottom. Climate controls are located above and are easy to figure, and audio and navigation controls are above those. All those systems are fairly easy to decipher and effective in operation. Unlike our experience in other Porsches, including a Boxster with a near-identical interior, the iPod plugged into the Cayman was electronically disconnected each time the key was switched off and we had to physically unplug and reconnect it to be recognized. Outward visibility is quite good, the blind spot to the right rear the sticking point. It isn't large enough to hide a car in a lane adjacent but it obscures cars coming onto the freeway in the blind spot. Fortunately, the Cayman's small size allows you to move around enough to see a little better and still remain in one lane. The standard radio antenna is embedded around the periphery of the windshield glass and makes for a sleeker exterior. It never bothered us, but a mast antenna is available. Cabin storage is relatively good. The glovebox handles routine paperwork and manuals, door pockets beneath the armrests handle wallets, smokes, remotes, sunglasses, and so on; the passenger has a supplementary tray adjacent to the seat. Smaller items will fit in the bin ahead of the shifter, with coins and MP3 players under the center armrest where the optional connection points are located. Seatbacks have coat hooks, there is space behind them if you don't have the seats all the way back, and immediately behind the occupants are two deep wells, and a net and bar where you could place a laptop bag without worry about it hitting you in the back of the head in a hard stop. Despite the race car shape there are two trunks in the Cayman, a deep squarish well up front and a wider, shallower bin at the back, both accessed by key buttons or controls next to the driver's seat. Like the cabin, these storage spaces are nicely finished, and the rear trunk gets leftover cabin air so put the ice cream there for the ride home. There is no spare tire on board but there are provisions to keep you moving. Unless you buy a roof rack there isn't room for a spare. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComSummaryThe Porsche Cayman leaves other sports cars chasing intangibles. It responds to driver inputs in the same manner as a race car but it doesn't bounce over bumps or wear you out with an oppressive ride. It is comfortable, nicely finished, entirely livable in traffic and will accommodate your need for modern conveniences. And the Cayman will delight on a winding highway with sounds to match Salzburg's best, balanced handling, and a driving experience unfettered by technology, insulation or excuses.
