The car shows some signs of age, especially in the paint, and has 77,621 original miles on the odometer. I am the second owner from new. This car retains every option available on a 190 at the time, including the special options available only on the 2.3 16V versions, such as the front and rear seats. BODY: This 190E 2.3 16V wears its factory correct and original Blue-Black Metallic paint, which unfortunately is not in the best condition, as you can see from the photos. It is peeling in some areas and faded in some others. If you need additional photos of the paint, please let me know. I'm happy to take more. The good news is that all of the body panels are ripple, dent, and rust free and don’t appear to have had any sort of body or accident damage. The glass and seals are in good condition and there are no leaks evident. The body trim, including the chrome, aluminum, and rubber, is in good condition. No trim has been replaced. There are some minor imperfections, but overall, all of the trim is in line with what the condition should be on a car of this age with the mileage shown. The composite body panels, fender flares, ground effects, etc., are also in good condition with no need for replacement, just re-finishing. INTERIOR: The interior is trimmed in the original black leather. The seating areas are in nice condition, with no rips or tears, but there is normal wear evident. The door panels are also in good condition, but please pay attention to the photos in the description. The dashboard has a couple of small cracks, which can be repaired, and there are two spots on the seating areas, one in the front and one in the back, where the stitches have separated and need to be re-sewn. The seat backs also need minor repair. All of these issues can be rectified with a good interior shop at a fairly low cost. The rest of the interior is in good condition and has normal wear and tear for a car of this age and mileage. If you don’t see something in my photos you would like to see, PLEASE ASK! The wood trim is also in decent overall condition and not in need of repair, unless your plan is to totally restore the car. The carpet is also original and in very presentable condition. The climate control system works, but the air conditioner is not getting very cold and will either need a charge or possibly a new compressor at some point. The compressor is still available and is fairly inexpensive. All of the windows power up and down and work, as well as the sun roof. The trunk is in very nice condition, the trunk floor covering is in excellent condition with no rips, tears, or missing pieces, and the spare tire, jack, and factory tool kit are accounted for and in very nice condition. UNDERCARRIAGE: The underside of the car is in line with a 77,000 mile Mercedes. Again, it is very solid with no evidence of any accident damage, but does have the normal minor surface rust associated with cars of this age. I've included quite a few photos of the underside of the car along with the rest of the photos of the car after the description in this section. ENGINE and ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The powerplant in this Mercedes is the original 2.3 litre 16 valve Cosworth engine. It is completely original and as you can see from the photos, well preserved. All aspects of the motor are in perfect working order, and the compression ratio is exactly where it should be. And yes, the car is fast. The engine bay is completely original, with all components in operational condition. Every detail of the engine compartment is “Mercedes Correct”. There is some wear to certain painted surfaces due to age, but overall, it is very presentable. All engine and drivetrain maintenance is up to date, including the following services: -oil and filter change -air filter replacement -installation of new fuel filter -engine coolant -installation of drive belts -lubrication of entire chassis -installation of new battery TRANSMISSION: The automatic transmission in this car is in working order and functions as a 77,000 mile car should. It is the original transmission to the car. As you already know if you are a fan of these cars, most of these cars were manufactured with manual transmissions. This car is one of the very few cars equipped with an automatic transmission. TIRES, WHEELS, and BRAKES: The tires are in fair condition but could use replacement if the new owner plans on doing any serious driving. They and are the correct and original size for the 1986 190 16V. The wheels are the original Mercedes-Benz wheels, and are in good condition. The entire braking system has been gone through to ensure every part works as it should. All rotors, pads, and seals have been replaced and brake fluid flushed. OVERALL DRIVING IMPRESSIONS: This 190E 2.3 16V runs and drives as should – It’s barely broken in! The 4 cylinder powerplant runs and accelerates smoothly and very quickly and the transmission shifts as it should. The car drives around town and on the open road. It has had all of the necessary service recently performed including oil-change, tune up, installation of new battery, and transmission and differential service. The only area I would pay attention to if I was to drive the car would be the suspension. Everything works, but it could use a complete overhaul at some point in the future, i.e tie rods, etc., not just because of the mileage, but also because of the fact the car sat idle for periods of time over the years. The most important part of the suspension, the self-leveling air shocks at the rear, are in working order and are not in need of repair at this time, although the accumulators will need to be replaced. PLEASE NOTE: This 190E 2.3 16V still retains all of its original or N.O.S. components! This means the engine, transmission, rear end, etc. are original or correct to the car. All of the numbers, markings, etc., are correct. THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN MODIFIED IN ANY WAY! Developed in collaboration with Cosworth initially for the rally scene of the 1980s, the flagship version of the 190E series eventually went on to dominate track-racing and ended up on the roads as well, putting up a good fight against BMW's iconic M3. Even though nine times out of ten, people would choose the Bimmer over the Merc, the 190E Cosworth's underdog status makes it an equally appealing car. As Richard Hammond put it: "it was Cinderella, but the coach never came". But let's take it from the start. In the late '70s, the V8-powered 450SLC rally car started to show the signs of aging, so the Stuttgart automaker decided to replace it with a compact model. Jointly developed with Cosworth, the 190E never made to rallying though, as Audi took everyone by surprise with the Quattro, featuring four-wheel drive and a turbocharged engine. Mercedes' management didn't want to fight an battle it couldn't win so instead, they competed in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). Motorsport regulations stated that, in order for a racecar to be homologated, there had to be a road-going version. So, at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show, Mercedes unveiled the 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth. It couldn't have been a more better time for this, as, just one month earlier, three Cosworth prototypes set a number of world speed records at the Nardo (Italy) oval, after being driven non-stop for over 50,000 km (31,069 miles). According to the plan, the distance was to be covered in 8 days, at an average speed of 240 km/h (149 mph). Six pilots drove in 2 and a half hour shifts and completed the task in exactly 201 hours, 39 minutes and 43 seconds. More amazing was the fact that all three cars finished without breaking down, only needing routine maintenance and, of course, refueling. The heart of the production 190E 2.3-16 was the four-cylinder Cosworth engine, based on the 136 hp 2.3-liter stock Mercedes powertrain. It was made from a light alloy, fitted with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The British engineers made the valves as large as they could be for the given displacement and also used a Bosch K-Jetronic injection system. The 2.3-16 delivered 185 hp at 6,200 rpm and 240 Nm (177 lb-ft) at 4,500 rpm, easily revving up to the 7,000 rpm redline. It was pretty fast for its time reaching 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph). Due to stricter emission regulations, U.S.-spec models had a slightly weaker engine, rated at 167 hp and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft). The power was sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual Getrag transmission with a racing gear pattern. That meant it had a "dog-leg" first gear, left and down from neutral. The steering ratio was shortened, for added precision, while the steering wheel itself had a smaller diameter. With a 0.32 drag coefficient, the 190E Cosworth set a new world record for the time. It was also a car that showcased many advanced engineering solutions, such as an electronically controlled limited-slip differential (LSD) and self-leveling hydraulic suspension on the rear axle. Inside, leather-clad Recaro sports seats provided ample support during fast cornering, alongside the aggressively shaped rear bench, while the instrument panel had additional gauges – oil temperature, voltmeter and stop watch. Only two exterior colors were available, the Blue-Black metallic and Smoke Silver. In 1984, driving a 190E Cosworth, Ayrton Senna, a relatively unknown driver at the time, won the first race held on the shortened Nürburgring, signaling the birth of two very big stars. But the 2.3-16 was just the beginning of the 190E Cosworth saga. In 1988, a new model followed, the 2.5-16. It had a bigger, 2.5-liter engine, delivering ten more ponies, for a total of 195 hp. There were also cars without catalytic converters, capable of 204 hp. Two new exterior colors were offered, the Almandine Red and Astral Silver. Overall, the 2.5-16 wasn't a quantum leap, but it did help the 190E Cosworth to keep up with its arch nemesis, the E30 BMW M3. Until 1988, the 2.3-16 was raced in different touring car championships by privately owned race teams. When Mercedes officially entered DTM, a new road going version was needed for homologation. This is how the 2.5-16 Evo I limited edition came to be. Only 502 units were built, featuring the same 2.5-liter 195 hp engine, with slight modifications. The powertrain had a shorter stroke and bigger bore, which allowed it to rev higher. Also, the rotating masses were lightened, lubrication improved and cam timing altered. The running gear received the most important upgrades, being optimized for heavy track use, as more and more 190E Cosworth owners were entering weekend races. For those wanting more performance, Mercedes also offered a DM18,000 PowerPack developed by AMG, delivering 30 extra horsepower. The upgrade included different camshafts, larger throttle body and more aggressive engine management. The intake and exhaust systems were optimized as well. The 1990 Geneva Auto Show saw the introduction of the Evo II, the most capable of all 190E Cosworths. This time the engine was considerably more powerful, churning out 235 hp and 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque, the latter constant between 5,000-6,000 rpm. Tipping the scales at just 1,300 kg (2,866 lbs), the Evo II could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) – impressive figures back then. The Evo II had an adjustable sports suspension, with three height levels, operated by a switch placed to the left of the steering wheel. Front passengers were given even more aggressive sports seats, while the rear bench was configured for only two individuals. An extensive bodykit, boasting an oversized rear win and blistered wheel arches, made the Evo II downright menacing and aerodynamically more efficient, with a drag coefficient of only 0.29. The Evo II had a limited run of 502 units, 500 painted in black, while the last two were silver. Base price was DM115,260, approximately €58,932 in today's currency. In the hills, both S-classers drive alike — same aloof and steely persona. Not hugely involving. In a straight line, though, they're as different as Warren Harding and Warren Beatty. The S600 blasts to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Know what that means? To 60 mph, this 2.5-ton Teuton is quicker than: 1. A Porsche 911 Carrera S. 2. A Chevrolet Corvette convertible. 3. A Ferrari 612 Scaglietti F1. The S600 whooshes through the quarter-mile in 12.6 seconds, same as a Lamborghini Murciélago. This big Benz's twin-turbo V-12 manufactures 612 pound-feet of torque as low as 1800 rpm. We once nailed the throttle just as Colwell tried to open the glove box. His arms flailed and thrashed at cabin air, and it wasn't until the Benz had attained another 60 or so digits that he was able to lean far enough forward to effect any dashboard operations. Our shark-gray Merc asked for only 2.7 seconds to transform 50 mph into 70 mph. On two-lane highways, we learned not to floor the throttle until we were in the passing lane. Otherwise, this heavy destroyer was too likely to ram whoever was being overtaken. Here's something else that'll amuse and panic your passengers: Set the Distronic Plus proximity cruise control for 120 mph while following, say, a dawdling Ford F-150, then lift your foot completely off the gas. Later, when you pull out to pass, the S600 will automatically proceed to a buck-twenty entirely on its own, as if possessed by the ghost of René Dreyfus, and no red lights or Klaxons or legal warnings will so much as suggest themselves. All of this is accompanied by neither turbo lag nor vibration nor exhaust roar. At every driver swap, we had to glance at the tach to tell whether the V-12 was even reciprocating. Our "base" S600 was fitted with all the electronics known to German engineers and a few known only to Homeland Security, and the desirable active body control that cost $3900 on the S550 is here standard. Not to mention brake lights that flash furiously during panic stops and a right-rear seat with eight power comfort adjustments, plus a ninth that automatically slides the right-front seat forward to keep it clear of one's costly monkey-paw loafers, and pneumatic bolsters that stiffen during cornering so you don't have to expend any unnecessary energy holding your own torso erect, God forbid. Did we mention that, during a 70-mph panic stop, the S600 requires only 12 more inches of tarmac than a Mazda RX-8? Compared with the Rolls, this Mercedes resembles some sort of J.C. Penney "Discount Daze" bargain. For the price of our Phantom, you could buy an S600, all seven sedans in last month's "Cheap Skates" comparo, and more than 14 months' worth of luxury lodging at the Drake in Chicago. After which, the parking valets will likely give you one of their handmade Russian Army coats, which, we are here to tell you, affect women in a warm and memorable way. Last February, we called the S550 "the best S-class ever," but now the S600 is the best S-class ever. , making it the best S-class ever, causing some of us to ask, "Why?" This car is already all arrogance and attitude, and every vehicle impeding its progress evokes that German descriptor "Backpfeifengesicht," which means "the face that cries out for a fist in it." This means that the system provides roughly the same range of visibility as high beam headlamps – but without dazzling oncoming traffic. Night view assist, which celebrated its debut in the S-Class in autumn 2005 and is also available for the CL Coupé, features two additional, infrared headlamps. Their light is invisible to the human eye, and therefore does not dazzle oncoming drivers. An infrared-sensitive camera on the inside of the windscreen shows the scene ahead of the vehicle on a display in the instrument cluster of the luxury Coupé, enabling road signs, pedestrians, cyclists, debris or other obstacles in the road to be identified much sooner. When night view assist is active, the infrared headlamps are automatically switched on when a speed of 15 km/h is reached and remain on when braking down to about 10 km/h. As soon as night view assist is activated, the display in the centre of the instrument cluster switches over to show the camera image. The large eight-inch display is directly in the driver’s field of vision, and provides a clear greyscale image of the road ahead. The driver is able to glance down at the infrared image regularly, monitor the situation ahead of the vehicle and adapt his style of driving accordingly. Up to 125 percent increase in safety Mercedes engineers have examined the capabilities of this technology in a series of practical trials. During comparative test drives with low-beam bi-xenon headlamps and the new night view assist system, male and female test drivers recognised obstacles in the road much sooner when assisted by the infrared light system. During tests, drivers were already able to discern test dummies at the roadside dressed in light-coloured clothing at a range of around 210 metres, which is about 41 metres sooner than with low-beam bi-xenon headlamps. The system proves even more effective in the case of pedestrians in dark clothing. In these situations the night view assist system already enabled the drivers to identify the test dummies at a range of around 164 metres, compared with only at about 72 metres when driving with low-beam bi-xenon headlamps alone. This represents a safety improvement of no less than 125 percent. Even when the headlamps of oncoming vehicles dazzle the driver and severely obscure the view, visibility is much better with this assistance system: a test dummy in light-coloured clothing standing at the road edge 50 metres behind an oncoming vehicle was detected from an average distance of 140 metres with the help of night view assist – around 53 metres sooner than with low-beam bi-xenon headlamps. The state-of-the-art CMOS sensor (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) and the infrared camera specially developed for Mercedes-Benz are able to reduce dazzle by electronic means, while enhancing the rest of the image to ensure that even smaller details are easily recognised. Important contribution to safer driving in the dark Night view assist is able to contribute greatly to improved road safety, as accident analyses carried out by Mercedes-Benz have confirmed: on the basis of data obtained from a joint accident research project conducted by German vehicle manufacturers and the federal office for roads and traffic, specialists at Mercedes-Benz analysed accidents occurring during the hours of darkness and found that the night view assist system has a very high safety potential. The risk of serious injury in road traffic is much greater in twilight and in the dark than during daylight hours. Collisions at night are predominantly driver-induced accidents during which drivers lose control of their vehicles – often because they have not recognised the course of the road soon enough in the dark, and failed to adjust their speed. As a result around half of the vehicles in question leave the road, while more than one quarter collides with oncoming traffic. Night view assist can also help to improve the safety of pedestrians. Track your service history for free at myCARFAX.com. ------------------------------------------ MOTOTREND 2011 V12 S CLASS While listening to a radio program about American Sign Language (ASL) from behind the wheel of a 2013 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG in rush-hour traffic, I learned that facial expressions are an integral part of ASL. I wondered how a hearing-impaired person would've interpreted my face earlier in the day, when I first experienced the 5097-pound S65 AMG run from 0-60 mph in just a tad over 4 seconds. Or when I compared the S65's $230,265 window sticker to the $178,185 one on its slightly tamer V-12-powered sibling, the S600. Both left me with a facial expression that could be described as dramatic and slightly insane. And those two adjectives pretty much sum up our thoughts on the S65 AMG and S600 following their weeks-long stays at our office. In the past, we sampled the 429-hp twin-turbo V-8 in the volume-leading S550 and the torquey turbodiesel V-6 in the S350 and found both powertrains to be more than adequate. Does the S-Class need a 12-cylinder? Not at all. But after driving these V-12 beasts, it's hard to imagine the S-Class being powered any other way. Performance wise, the cars weren't too far apart in a straight line, despite the S65's power advantage. The S600's 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-12, rated at 520-hp and 622 lb-ft, propelled the 5029-pound sedan from 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, and it completed the quarter mile in 12.4 seconds at 118.9 mph. The S65 AMG and its 6.0-liter, hand-built, twin-turbo V-12, which produces 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, posted a 0-60 mph run of 4.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 12.4 seconds at 120.1 mph. Incidentally, the latter figure tied the S63 AMG we tested last summer. Both cars are mated to a five-speed automatic -- the only gearbox Mercedes has that's stout enough to handle all the power -- with the S65's tweaked by AMG to shift a tad faster. Surprisingly, the S600 and S65 AMG were tied on the skidpad (0.87 g) and the figure eight, with both cars posting a time of 26.1 seconds at 0.73 g. The S600 needed just 109 feet when stopping from 60 mph, 2 fewer feet than the S65, which is fitted with brakes that are bigger and perforated. What gives? Performance similarities aside, these two S-Classes have very distinct personalities. The S600 is the understated wallflower, with nothing more than a few "V-12" badges on its front fenders and unique exhaust pipes and rims to set it apart from more pedestrian S-Classes. It's extremely quiet, too, whether it's idling or at wide open throttle. At times, I caught myself moving my jaw around to make sure my ears weren't clogged. To make things even fancier, our S600 tester's optional Designo interior package, with its taupe leather, polished burl walnut trim, and chrome accents, appears to have been pulled from an opulent Art Deco mansion in Beverly Hills. The S65 AMG, on the other hand, has the rowdiness you expect for a car from Affalterbach, with its outspoken exhaust note growling either loudly or very loudly. A few staffers argued that the S65 is way too noisy, We also preferred the S600's steering feel over that of the S65, which was slightly overboosted. Out in public, the S65 AMG was an absolute head-turner. In addition to its signature AMG quad exhaust tips, body kit, and five-spoke rims, this S65 was painted with a special shade dubbed Designo Magno Platinum -- aka gunmetal gray metallic -- with a matte finish, a combination that adds $3950 to the sticker price. Even flashier, especially for a S-Class, was the Designo interior, which featured seats and door panels wrapped in gorgeous brown diamond-stitched leather, while everything else from the roofliner to the dashboard was covered in either black leather or Alcantara. As expected, both cars are packed with technology and interior goodies. Passengers are protected by safety features including Active Blind Spot assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Benz's Distronic adaptive cruise control system. Both cars also have a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system, rear DVD entertainment system, and massaging seats for every passenger except the person sitting in the middle back seat. While we usually love all things sporting an AMG badge, it's hard to overlook at what the S600 brings to the table. With a price tag that's at least $50,000 less than the S65, the S600 matches its rowdy AMG's performance, better braking, equipment list, and V-12 exclusivity. Unless you really want to hear that growl or feel the need to flash, it's the 12-pot S-Class to get. The S65 is only moderately faster, but screams mid life crisis with all the go fast looking bolt ons. This impressive picture is completed by smoothness and outstanding vibrational behaviour. These qualities are inherent design features of the new V12 engine: the V-angle of 60 degrees balances inertia forces and moments at source, without the need for special balancer shafts. The modern "bedplate" design makes another major contribution to particularly smooth, lownoise operation: the "bedplate" consists of an luminium plate with integral cast iron bearing brackets on the main crankshaft bearings for additional rigidity. This effectively reduces longitudinal vibrations in the engine block. In addition, the sump has been isolated from the crankcase as a vibration-reducing measure. The crankcase of the new "Type 12" engine is of die cast aluminium, while the two cylinder head covers are of die cast magnesium and the cylinder liners are made from a lightweight, low-friction aluminium-silicon alloy which allows a weight-saving of approx. 500 grams per cylinder versus conventional cast iron liners. Other lightweight components of the twelve-cylinder engine include fracture-split conrods made from high-strength, forged-steel alloys; oil-spray cooled pistons made from a highquality aluminium alloy; hollow camshafts of induction hardened, forged steel; a weight-optimised, forged steel crankshaft and a sump of die cast aluminium. Thanks to this advanced lightweight design, the power unit tips the scales at just 270 kilograms, achieving a power to weight ratio of 0.66 kg/kW. A camshaft in each of the two banks of cylinders controls the three valves per cylinder via lowfriction roller-type cam followers. Each valve has a cam follower and is adjusted hydraulically. The three-valve technology reduces thermal losses at the exhaust stage and speeds catalytic converter warm-up after a cold start. In conjunction with two large ceramic catalytic converters positioned close to the engine, this has a decisive influence on ensuring that the new Maybach reliably complies with the strict EU-4 limits. Emissions are controlled by two catalytic converters which are arranged close to the engine and each contain two ceramic monoliths. The two intake valves per cylinder have a diameter of 31 millimetres, hile the sodium-cooled exhaust valve measures 33 millimetres. The developers of the Type 12 engine were able to dispense with the camshaft adjustment system. The twin turbochargers aspirate the twelve-cylinder efficiently. Expressed in figures: 622 Nm of torque are already on tap at 1500 rpm, the 800 Nm mark is reached at 1800 rpm and from 2300 rpm the power unit generates its torque of 900 Nm, a figure which is unique among series-production passenger cars. It maintains this up to 3000 rpm. The V12 engine's maximum output of 405 kW/550 bhp is available at 5250 rpm. The positioning of the twin turbocharger turbines in the exhaust manifold maximises their efficiency. A wastegate control system enables the flow of exhaust gases to the turbines to be matched to the current operating point of the engine. Wastegate valves are integrated into each turbocharger and operate electro-pneumatically. The compressed air flows from the turbochargers through two engine-mounted watercooled intercoolers located on the cylinder head covers. Depending on the engine load, the air is cooled here by up to 100 C. The water-intercoolers are part of a special low-temperature circuit. A demand-controlled, electric circulation pump transfers the heat between the water-intercoolers and the low-temperature cooler located in front of the engine, which passes the heat from the water to the cooling air. A microprocessor controls all engine functions, making use of various additional sensor data to control the two turbochargers: Pressure and temperature sensors in the charge air distributor are used to calculate the intake air mass. A sensor in front of the throttle valve adjusting motor registers the charge pressure. Sensors upstream and downstream of the air filter monitor the pressure on the clean air side so that the speed of the turbochargers can always be adjusted to suit the situation. In addition, the engine computer controls an advanced alternating current twin-spark ignition system whose feature is constant ionic current measurement at the spark plugs. This recognises any misfires and therefore has a major role in protecting the catalytic converters. Should the ionic current fall below a certain value, the fuel injection for the cylinder concerned is automatically interrupted at once. Ionic current measurement is supplemented with torsional vibration analysis at the crankshaft. By combining both control signals in this way, the developers of the Type 12 engine have achieved an unprecedented degree of accuracy in the detection of misfires right across the entire load and engine speed range. This amazing engine is also the same engine found in the Mercedes 600 series V12's and AMG SL/CL 65 series. but with some even heavier duty parts. I bought the car from the first owner on eBay. The car belonged to the sellers mother, who had the car since new in Southern California. I am only the second owner. The car is very clean and original, inside and out. The seats have no damage - all leather is like new. The rear seats look as if no one has ever sat in them. Mechanically the car is very strong. I had the transmission rebuilt and radiator replaced once I purchased the car – at 89,000 miles – because a line from the transmission cooler to the radiator had ruptured. The issue has been completely resolved. In the past few months I have had the alternator, battery, and distributor cap replaced. It has 4 new tires with 2,000 miles on them. Normal wear and tear for a car of its age, but very well maintained mechanically. Paint and interior are not perfect, but presentable. Little bit of time and elbow grease could fix small interior trim issues. AC needs seasonal recharge - will be recharged for new owner.Only selling because wife and I are in school and do not need two cars.I reserve the right to end this auction early as I have car listed locally.All shipping arraignments are the responsibility of the buyer.
