Here is one of the nicest W140 available in the entire U.S. today. Outlined below is the brief history of this vehicle as I sought it out, meticulously refined it, and brought it up to a very high level specification. I have driven it maybe 2,000 miles since I purchased it last year. It currently has 123K. I am an amateur Mercedes Benz enthusiast, having owned several different body styles from classic and modern eras. I’ve owned flagship W126 (SEL420) body styles, passed down from family members, to $125K absurdities ,like the G55 AMG Galendewagen. I was looking for a suitable project to continue my passion in MB cars, and was choosing between W116, W123, W124, and W140 body styles. I ultimately decided on the W140 body as it represents a watershed moment in Mercedes development history, bridging their incomparable W126 bodies, to the modern era. Ridiculously over the development budget, the W140 was a series of engineering feats combined into a single package. I strongly suggest that a potential buyer learn about the history of these vehicles, it really helps to appreciate what went into these cars and makes caring for them that much more rewarding. Once I decided on the W140 body style, I needed to choose a model. The W140 came in a variety of configurations from the 6 cylinder, up to a 12 cylinder beast, with a few 8 cylinder models in the middle. I originally sought out the V12 despite sound reasoning. These cars are incredibly difficult to service on your own and MB dealer servicing of a V12 will get ridiculously expensive, fast. In my search, an S320 keep appearing in my searches, very clean and original, with the 6 cylinder engine. The more I looked into this car, the better it sounded for a solid baseline for my project. I went to see it and it was a perfect fit for my needs. Not perfect, but having a great foundation for which I could build from. All of the things it needed were normal for the age of the car, things I will outline in detail below. Replaced or Repaired: - MP3, SD Card, with Streaming Audio to ORIGINAL factory Radio. Incredible Sound System! - ENTIRE Front End Suspension Rebuild. Drives like a brand new car. $$$!! - Transmission Service. Rebuild of automatic valve body and replaced conductor plate and valves. - Hand painted pin stripes - Filter and fluid change. - Alternator replaced with Bosch OEM - Heater “T” fitting replaced as preventative measure. - Thermostat, O Ring, Cap, petcock, and coolant. - Sunroof Shade - Interior Rear View Mirror - Wheels and Tires - New AMG style wheels - New Continental Extreme Contact Tires - Refinished arm rest leather - New Cabin Air Filters - Radio On/Off Button - Grey Plaid London Fog Umbrella for rear deck - New shift knob emblem - Replaced sun visors and vanity mirrors - Disconnected OEM cellular phone system (correctly) - New OEM Floor Mats - New S600 Grille - Battery Tender Installed. I only drove the car 2k miles since purchased and left on trickle charge. Quick connect. - OEM First Aid Kit - OEM Owner and Service Manuals - Key with Silver MB Keyring - Headlight Access Cover (in engine bay) - Clear Turn Signals with Amber Bulbs - Super Bright LED Glovebox Light - Set Belt releases re-colored red - Badged as an S500 - Authentic Euro Plate with Stuttgart Seal - Stuttgart trunk badge Extra Parts Not Installed: - New front seat leather for both seats, backs and bottoms - Rear Passenger Vacuum Actuator for Lock - Extra 3M Di-Noc Wood Trim Material - Collection of MB Emblems and Badges Remaining Issues: - Sunroof Cover. I paid over $300 for a replacement sunroof shade. They are known to have their material start to sag. The sunroof works perfectly and the replacement shade is perfect, except that the corner is snagging and needs to be cleaned and hit with contact adhesive or it will begin to have the same issues again. It is a 20 minute job, maybe an hour done very slowly. - Outside Mirrors Control. The outside mirrors were replaced, but they are not the same connectors, os they are not controlled by the in car switch. A person handy with wiring would be able to mate the connectors. I am the only one who ever drives the car, so I set them in place by hand and have not touched them since. - Rear Passenger Door Lock Actuator. The rear passenger door works perfectly well. The issue is that the door actuator will lock the door, but will not unlock it. You have to lift it up by hand. I have a replacement pump for it which should be an easy swap. - Some bubbling of 3M interior material. The wood interior pieces were refinished using a 3M Di-Noc wood material that looks incredible, much better than the original cherry wood. It makes the car look many years newer inside. There are some places where the material is lifting up. I am including a few extra feet of material. A heat gun and some effort should fix it easily. Purchased 4 days ago for my 18 year old son. He does not want it. It needs work to be roadworthy or buy it as an excellent parts car. Has a clear Florida title. Car is for sale locally and as such I will end auction if sold locally if there are no bids. The good. Very nice Clarion NP401 stereo with flip screen and built-in GPS. AC is very cold Sunroof works All power windows work but the switches are glitchy which is common for these cars. The central locking works. The locking vacuum pump alone is $350.00 alone on Ebay. All the glass is good. Mirrors are good Bridgestone tires are excellent. Body is good with slight push on passenger-side rear door Battery is excellent Spare tires is in very good shape. Dash is in very good condition. Things that need work. Motor has a miss and runs rough because of it. I have not had it checked. Transmission leaks fluid but still shifts good. Power steering works but leaks fluid. Headliner on sunroof shade needs to be replaced. Seats are fair. This car can be driven away but power steering leaks and will eventually go manual. I had someone drive it to my home so you can go a short distance but I would tow it for safety. NOTE: CAR WAS NEGLECTED BY PREVIOUS OWNER. The setup looks amazing on this car and really sets it apart from the crowd. The wheels are in great condition with zero curb rash and run true and bend-free. The interior is simply stunning in the way that only the feel of a classic MB can deliver when you enter the cabin. The dash and door panels are in very nice condition with zero cracks or damage to be noted anywhere. The leather seats are all in very good condition and look almost new, which shows the quality of leather used in this car. All wood grain is in excellent condition with zero flaws or cracks. The passenger door wood trim shows some damage but a excellent condition replacement is on the way. The carpets are all very nice are not worn or damaged. The car also includes a brand new set of genuine Mercedes grey mats. All dials and controls function as they should, power windows and antenna also are fully functional. The sound system is also very nice with the Factory Becker BOSE CD sound system. All lights, gauges switches, and accessories work as they should. The trunk compartment is very clean and does have the original jack, tools, and the original spare tire and wheel. This car is all there and in excellent shape with all functions and accessories working as they should. Mechanically, this S320 runs GREAT! I have owned nearly 20 80's and 90's era Mercedes vehicles, and this car blows the doors off all of them! The car starts right up and shifts smooth as silk. It drives as good now as the day it rolled of the lot. These cars are known to be expensive to maintain, but this car has excellent lifelong dealer service history, so you know it has been well cared for. The 3.2L Inline 6 has been Mercedes workhorse engine for over 20 years, so you know it is just plain reliable. The suspension is very tight and feels solid even at autobahn speeds above 90mph. The car was always regularly serviced every 4,000 miles and shows it in how flawless the car drives. Car shows religious service by first owner up to about 75k, then the second owner must have had it serviced at a smaller independent shop. Car shows a major service at 60k including new plugs, and had all brakes done around 72k. We just had the fluids serviced and car looked over and got a big thumbs up! I would rate the exterior of this S320 to be in ABOVE AVERAGE CONDITION for its age and mileage. As you can see, this is a gorgeous sedan. It is finished in silver over gray. The finish has a mile deep shine and looks as smooth as glass. As with any older vehicle, please expect a few flaws and imperfections commensurate with age and mileage. On this specific example, the worst I can say about the exterior is a few small scuff marks on the bumper corners. As you walk around the exterior of this S320, it is quite a stunning automobile. The proportions of these cars are immense. They are noticeably wider than the generation of S-Class that followed. The body lines of this Mercedes sedan are as straight as an arrow. The hood, doors and trunk all open and close easily. The vacuum assist is not working at the trunk but all four doors soft close as they should. The body cladding is all present and looks great with no visible fading. The factory alloy wheels show well and are wrapped in a nice set of rubber with good tread all around. All of the glass and lenses are intact. Pride in ownership shows throughout this Mercedes-Benz. Please take the time to check out each of the photos carefully to see how clean this S320 looks inside and out. I would rate the interior of this Mercedes-Benz to be in ABOVE AVERAGE CONDITION for its age and mileage. Again, the quality of these cars is evident in every aspect. The doors feel solid and heavy. They close themselves tightly and silently, as they should. The double-gasket windows seal tightly and produce a remarkably quiet interior. Between the vacuum close doors and the double thick windows, closing the door is almost like pressing the mute button for the outside world. Between the two layers of glass in the windows is a constant vacuum, which means that the side windows will never fog up. The door cards are clean and tight. The dash and headliner are clean. The wood interior veneers show well and indicate that this Mercedes-Benz has probably spent most of her life cozy in a garage. The carpets show well for their age and are full looking throughout the interior. Both front seats are power operated. The leather shows very well for its age and is very comfortable. Being the more desirable long wheelbase sedan, rear seat room is ample. The power windows, seats, mirrors, sunroof and central locks all work properly. The power rear sunshade raises and lowers easily and smoothly. The climate control system is fully automatic and appears to be working properly. It offers independent settings for the driver and passenger. The heater works great and the air conditioner blows ICE COLD AIR, too. The audio system is the original Becker/BOSE system which sounds good. The trunk is spaciou and clean. Again, pride in ownership shows throughout this Mercedes-Benz. A full set of books and manuals are included, as is the original $69,090 window sticker. Mechanically, this S320 appears to be in good running and driving condition. The 3.2L inline six cylinder engine starts easily and runs smoothly. I didn't notice any leaks and the engine does not smoke. Her road manners are excellent, as you'd expect from an S-Class Mercedes. The suspension feels tight and well sorted. The steering and brakes feel good, too. The engine keeps perfect temperature and excellent oil pressure at all times. There have been no idiot lights on. The inline six cylinder engine makes plenty of power and is surprisingly effective in such a large sedan. In fact, an S320 could beat a same year Porsche Boxster from 0-60. The five speed automatic transmission engages smoothly and shifts perfectly. Out on the highway, she drives nice and straight with absolutely no complaints. The fuel sipping six cylinder engine gets remarkably good fuel economy, too. These are absolutely fantastic cars. I've owned more of these than I can count and I would argue with anyone that these are the best cars on the road. If you've never owned one of these, you should. It'll quickly become the basis by which you judge other cars. If you've been looking for a clean W140 with low miles, this Merc definitely deserves your serious consideration. Good ones of these are getting harder and harder to find. The next fortunate owner of this S320 will have the last of an era when a Mercedes-Benz was built to last. As time progresses, these cars will become very valuable. I would recommend keeping the miles off of this one if you can. The 1999 model year was the final year for the W140 chassis. In my opinion, the 140 chassis is the best platform ever offered by Mercedes-Benz. These cars have a very desirable combination of old school Mercedes reliability, solid construction and modern luxury appointments. These cars are the last of a breed when a Mercedes-Benz was built to a standard, not a price. The quality shows throughout this vehicle. Nearly every car on the road pales in comparison to a W140. I would rate the exterior of this S320 to be in ABOVE AVERAGE CONDITION for its age and mileage. As you can see, this is a gorgeous sedan. It is finished in silver over gray. The finish has a mile deep shine and looks as smooth as glass. As with any older vehicle, please expect a few flaws and imperfections commensurate with age and mileage. On this specific example, the worst I can say about the exterior is a few small scuff marks on the bumper corners. As you walk around the exterior of this S320, it is quite a stunning automobile. The proportions of these cars are immense. They are noticeably wider than the generation of S-Class that followed. The body lines of this Mercedes sedan are as straight as an arrow. The hood, doors and trunk all open and close easily. The vacuum assist is not working at the trunk but all four doors soft close as they should. The body cladding is all present and looks great with no visible fading. The factory alloy wheels show well and are wrapped in a nice set of rubber with good tread all around. All of the glass and lenses are intact. Pride in ownership shows throughout this Mercedes-Benz. Please take the time to check out each of the photos carefully to see how clean this S320 looks inside and out. I would rate the interior of this Mercedes-Benz to be in ABOVE AVERAGE CONDITION for its age and mileage. Again, the quality of these cars is evident in every aspect. The doors feel solid and heavy. They close themselves tightly and silently, as they should. The double-gasket windows seal tightly and produce a remarkably quiet interior. Between the vacuum close doors and the double thick windows, closing the door is almost like pressing the mute button for the outside world. Between the two layers of glass in the windows is a constant vacuum, which means that the side windows will never fog up. The door cards are clean and tight. The dash and headliner are clean. The wood interior veneers show well and indicate that this Mercedes-Benz has probably spent most of her life cozy in a garage. The carpets show well for their age and are full looking throughout the interior. Both front seats are power operated. The leather shows very well for its age and is very comfortable. Being the more desirable long wheelbase sedan, rear seat room is ample. The power windows, seats, mirrors, sunroof and central locks all work properly. The power rear sunshade raises and lowers easily and smoothly. The climate control system is fully automatic and appears to be working properly. It offers independent settings for the driver and passenger. The heater works great and the air conditioner blows ICE COLD AIR, too. The audio system is the original Becker/BOSE system which sounds good. The trunk is spaciou and clean. Again, pride in ownership shows throughout this Mercedes-Benz. A full set of books and manuals are included, as is the original $69,090 window sticker. Mechanically, this S320 appears to be in good running and driving condition. The 3.2L inline six cylinder engine starts easily and runs smoothly. I didn't notice any leaks and the engine does not smoke. Her road manners are excellent, as you'd expect from an S-Class Mercedes. The suspension feels tight and well sorted. The steering and brakes feel good, too. The engine keeps perfect temperature and excellent oil pressure at all times. There have been no idiot lights on. The inline six cylinder engine makes plenty of power and is surprisingly effective in such a large sedan. In fact, an S320 could beat a same year Porsche Boxster from 0-60. The five speed automatic transmission engages smoothly and shifts perfectly. Out on the highway, she drives nice and straight with absolutely no complaints. The fuel sipping six cylinder engine gets remarkably good fuel economy, too. These are absolutely fantastic cars. I've owned more of these than I can count and I would argue with anyone that these are the best cars on the road. If you've never owned one of these, you should. It'll quickly become the basis by which you judge other cars. If you've been looking for a clean W140 with low miles, this Merc definitely deserves your serious consideration. Good ones of these are getting harder and harder to find. The next fortunate owner of this S320 will have the last of an era when a Mercedes-Benz was built to last. As time progresses, these cars will become very valuable. I would recommend keeping the miles off of this one if you can.
