Powered by a 2.5L straight-six SOHC engine, fitted with the correct fuel-injection system and components, the engine is teamed with a smooth-shifting automatic transmission. The interior, with rich wood accents, gleaming chrome gauge surrounds and brilliant chrome touches throughout, is very attractive. The switches, knobs, controls and gauges are all in excellent condition, along with a gorgeous silver fascia. This solidly-built Mercedes possesses a level of assembly quality and craftsmanship alien to most of its British or Italian contemporaries. The bonnet, trunk lid, door skins and tonneau cover were made of aluminum to reduce weight. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes, and radial tires gave the 250SL superb handling for its time. The styling of the front, with its characteristic upright Bosch "fishbowl" headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three-pointed star in the nose panel, paid homage to the then already legendary 300 SL roadster. The thin chrome euro bumpers are jewelry adorning this stylish convertible. The W 113 was the first sports car with a "safety body," based on Bela Barenyi's extensive work on vehicle safety: It had a rigid passenger cell and designated crumple zones with impact-absorbing front and rear sections built into the vehicle structure. The interior was "rounded," with all hard corners and edges removed. Production of W113 250SLs commenced in December 1966 and ended in January 1968. The short one-year production run makes the 250 SL the rarest of the W 113 series cars. This 230SL is a very nice driver. Mercedes debuted the 230SL (designated W113 internally) at the Geneva Auto Show in March 1963, to great acclaim. Exterior styling was a departure for Mercedes, which had until that point relied on rounded, even bulbous curves to characterize its automobiles. But the 230SL bordered on square, pulled off through the use of clean, elegant lines, intelligent placement of the wheels in proportion to the rest of the design, and a tall, "pagoda" removable hard top that allowed for ease of ingress and egress Cabin refinement set the 230SL apart from the competition, with acres of leather, plush, supportive seats, big, readable gauges, Blaupunkt radios, and a very high-quality level of craftsmanship throughout, including the soft top, which disappeared easily and unobtrusively when not in use. The 230SL was an unqualified success, with sales topping even the best sales year for the 190SL. This was in some measure due to the car's genuine ability to perform. Top speed was rated at about 125, and handling was described as neutral, with light, balanced steering, even at the limit. And while they were not originally intended as competition cars, the sturdy, reliable 230 made a suitable and quite successful rally machine, including a famous win in the grueling Spa-Sofia-Liege Rally. This two-door roadster is powered by a 1,897cc/120hp four-cylinder engine with dual Weber carbs, and is teamed with a four-speed manual gearbox. 1-owner since 1971. Odometer shows 9,674 miles. The very attractive interior is finished in black leather, with gleaming chrome gauge surrounds and brilliant chrome touches throughout. Original soft top, hardtop headliner in original perforated vinyl. New Michelin tires, including spare. Original paint color, including the five matching five painted wheels. Original Becker 'Mexico' radio and wind-up clock (still working). An excellent driver that also shows extremely well, this rare and highly desirable 190SL Roadster will be a cherished addition to any collection. This solidly-built Mercedes-Benz possesses a level of assembly quality alien to most of its British or Italian contemporaries, and has been lovingly cared for by just one owner since 1971. The open-top Mercedes Benz was not designed as a thorough-bred sports car. Instead, it was conceived as an elegant two-seater for touring and everyday driving.
