Service and Inspection Report: We brought this vehicle in for service and really didn’t find anything in need of attention. It is obvious that the prior owner serviced what needed attention right down to a new drive belt and drive belt tensioner hardware. The oil looked relatively clean as did the remainder of the fluid items. Even the wiper blade has the Mercedes emblem so we deferred making any changes. The battery tested a bit low so we did install a new Mercedes battery for you. Shop around and then ADD IT UP! Why buy one that needs work? How much will that cost you in addition to the car itself? Verified by its original data card (included), the car is finished in factory correct Black (DB 040) over red leather, arguably the most appealing livery ever offered on a W121. The car left the factory as a two-tone car with a White (DB 050) hard top and hub caps, and while we still have the original White hard top, we also happen to have a correct Black “big window” hardtop as well, which we prefer. As “preservation class” vintage cars hadn’t yet been given the credence that they’ve come to enjoy (both in terms of recognition and valuation) the Mitchell’s made the choice to refinish the car in its factory correct black paint at some point during their tenure, which is the finish the car still wears today. In February of 1984, the car was sold with 115k miles on the odometer to its third and most recent owner, Dr. William Lell, also of Birmingham. Like the Mitchells, Dr. Lell always kept the car properly serviced and garaged, using it as a cherished weekend driver – in 31 years of ownership he accrued a mere 7k additional miles. Upon acquiring the car he had the seats reupholstered in correct red leather and a new correct canvas soft top installed, both at Bud’s Benz in Douglasville, GA. Throughout his ownership, the car has consistent maintenance, evidenced by a thick stack of service receipts from local marque experts. It should come as no surprise then that the car is in fantastic shape mechanically. The original, numbers matching engine starts effortlessly, idles smoothly and consistently and pulls strongly through each of the original transmission’s gears. The car drives and brakes straight and true, the suspension is tight and the car is a joy to drive, whether tooling through town, winding through the canyons or bombing down the highway. The car is ideal for both top-down weekend cruises to local shows and more strenuous touring events. It needs nothing to be enjoyed save for an appreciative new owner. As the pictures show, the finish applied in 1984 has held up quite well and the car remains absolutely gorgeous. While having a number of minor imperfections (each insignificant enough to not appear in the pictures), the factory correct Black finish is deep and lustrous, perfectly offset by the lascivious red interior. The seats themselves appear almost new, the carpets are in good shape and the car retains its immaculate, uncracked original steering wheel and fully functioning Becker radio. The glass and chrome are in excellent original condition and while the car’s soft top shows some limited wear the rear window is clear and it remains entirely serviceable. Perhaps most notably, as the recipient of proper care and storage, the frame and undercarriage are entirely solid and original, showing no evidence of harmful rust or repairs. A condition mirrored in the trunk and engine compartment, it tells the story of a remarkably untouched, extremely original example that has always lived a charmed life. As meticulous an owner as you’ll find, Dr. Lell comprehensively documented his 31 year ownership of the car including the aforementioned thick stack of service receipts, all of the sales documents from his acquisition of the car, an appraisal from just prior (describing the car as being in “exceptionally good condition”) and a range of technical data for the car. The car is also remarkably complete in terms of original tools, retaining its rare (and expensive to replace) original tool kit, spare tire and changing tools. The car also comes with its original data card, all of its original books and manuals and even the original packing slip from June of 1961. Finally, as mentioned above, the car will also come with either its original White big window hard top or a correct black big window hardtop as seen in the pictures. This is a truly uncommon opportunity to acquire an extremely original, entirely numbers matching and correct, well documented, extremely honest and beautifully presented 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL. Considering its condition, provenance, documentation and correctness, it would be incredibly difficult to find a similarly stellar original example. We drove Cayenne S models first without and then with the system at Barber Motorsports Park, home of the Porsche Sport Driving School in Alabama, and the difference in cornering performance was dramatic. The Cayenne S Hybrid, after some three and a half years in development, uses a supercharged version of the VW/Audi 3.0-liter V6 engine, generating 333 horsepower, with a 47-horspower electric motor added in for a total of 380 horsepower and a total of 428 foot-pounds of torque at just 1000 rpm. close to the output of the 4.8-liter V8 engine in the regular S model. Porsche says the Cayenne Hybrid will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, and reach 150 mph. It's the cleanest, greenest model in Porsche history at 193 gram of CO per kilometer on the European testing cycle. The hybrid system uses a 288-volt nickel metal-hydride (NiMh) Sanyo battery fitted beneath the luggage compartment and regenerative braking, the process of storing electricity regained from applying the brakes and driving under normal conditions. Porsche's very first hybrid system has an E-mode switch, which can operate the vehicle entirely on electricity in slow-moving commuting situations up to 37 mph (we actually saw 41 mph going downhill). In the sailing mode, which can operate up to 97 mph, both the engine and electric motor shut off completely, and the vehicle also shuts down every time it comes to a stop, with regenerative braking to recharge the battery. The battery charging system, developed with battery partner Sanyo, keeps the charge between 45 and 75 percent. The Cayenne S Hybrid is a full parallel hybrid, meaning that it can operate on electricity, gasoline, or both, and uses the standard 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. The electric motor and the decoupler or clutch mechanism are placed ahead of the transmission. The system incorporates hill descent control as well as a hill-holder. Porsche estimates that the Cayenne S hybrid will achieve 21 miles per gallon in the city (a 30 percent improvement compared to the V8-powered S version) and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. All Cayenne models except the Turbo come with steel suspension as standard equipment, but for the first time it can be combined with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as an option. PASM is a highly sophisticated system providing active, infinite damper control on the front and rear axle. It offers the choice of the three settings: Comfort, Normal and Sport. That's about the same length as the current BMW X5 (191.2 inches) and Mercedes M-Class (188.5 inches). Cayenne is 75.9 inches wide, about the same as the X5 (76.1 inches) or a half-inch wider than M-Class (75.2 inches). Cayenne's wheelbase measures 114 inches. In size, Cayenne most closely matches Volkswagen's Touareg, which is no surprise given the two vehicles were developed jointly by Porsche and VW. Engines and other Cayenne components are built by Porsche in Zuffenhausen, Germany, and mated to the Cayenne at an assembly plant in Leipzig. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression During our time in and around Birmingham, Alabama, and at Barber Motorsports Park, we were able to drive the Hybrid, Turbo and S versions of the Cayenne, and we came away impressed. The Cayenne in any form is a wonderful, quiet, plush, and luxurious highway cruiser, but the V8 S version and the Turbo will find their way around a racetrack with amazing alacrity, very little body lean in hard corners, and no bad behavior. The Turbo version is rated by Porsche to run the 0-60 mph sprint in a mere 4.4 seconds, and has a top speed of 172 mph, about 50 mph higher than a typical SUV. There are very few twin-turbocharged, direct-injection V8 engines in the SUV world, and this one generates 500 horsepower and 516 foot-pounds of torque, which gives the Cayenne absolutely breathtaking performance, but also allows towing of over 7700 pounds. The highway cruising behavior of any of the Cayenne models is exemplary. The air spring suspension and the big tires act together as giant shock absorbers for whatever dips, ruts, hole and bumps are in the road. The brakes on the Cayenne are enormous, with six-pistons calipers up front and four-piston calipers at the rear, with 15.3-inch front discs and 14-inch rear discs, enough braking power to stop a freight train on a dime. The hybrid version is meant to be clean and green without being boring or underpowered, and Porsche has done a wonderful job mating a real engine, a real transmission (instead of a CVT), and a clever hybrid package of battery, motor, charging system and electronic controls. The Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) is a further development of the existing Bi-Xenon light system that offers not only dynamic and static cornering lights, but also continuous light leveling and speed-sensitive headlight control with separate modes for roads and interstates. The system is standard on the Cayenne Turbo and an option on the other models. The new Lane Change Assistant (LCA) monitors traffic in the adjacent lanes up to 230 feet behind the vehicle, including the driver's blind spots. As soon as another vehicle enters the blind spots or approaches rapidly from behind within a range of 180 feet, an LED warning light illuminates on the inside of the corresponding exterior mirror. If the driver uses the turn signal, the flashing light appears to alert the driver of the approaching vehicle. Adaptive Cruise Control uses radar to monitor and maintain the preset distance between the Cayenne and vehicles in front of it by restricting the throttle or applying the brakes. If the vehicle in front decelerates, ACC will continue to reduce speed, all the way down to a complete stop. ACC operates at speeds from 20 to 100 mph. The required braking power is calculated by the system and by Porsche Stability Management (PSM) building up brake pressure. If the distance between the Cayenne and the vehicle ahead becomes too small, the system alerts the brake standby function to shorten the stopping distance required. It also pre-fills the brake system for quicker response and gives the driver both a visual and an acoustic warning and an additional brake pulse. The center console grab handles that were a trademark of the original Cayenne are still there, with a new design. Rear-seat room is more generous, thanks to the 1.6-inch extended wheelbase for 2011. The second seat now slides fore-and-aft by 6.3 inches, and the backrest can be adjusted to three different angles, or up to 6 degrees. Porsche's traditional five round-instrument gauge cluster now includes a high-resolution circular 4.8-inch TFT screen to the right of the tach. It can be used to change radio stations, vehicle settings, access the navigation system or view the map. The Cayenne S Hybrid instrument cluster differs as the instruments provide the driver with all information he or she needs to monitor car's innovative hybrid system and maximize its efficiencies. The 2011 Cayenne comes with the same audio and communication systems found in the Panamera, with a standard Bose Surround Sound and the optional Burmester high-end Surround Sound System. The 2011 Cayenne has all-new front, side and rear appearance. Through careful application of engineering, the 2011 Cayenne is an astounding 400 pounds lighter than the previous-generation even though it is better equipped and two inches longer overall. PTV Plus uses variable torque distribution on the rear wheels as well as an electronically controlled rear axle differential lock, increasing both driving dynamics and stability in curves. The system automatically brakes the inside rear wheel in turns and racetrack corners in order to make the Cayenne turn in like a race car. We drove Cayenne S models first without and then with the system at Barber Motorsports Park, home of the Porsche Sport Driving School in Alabama, and the difference in cornering performance was dramatic. The Cayenne S Hybrid, after some three and a half years in development, uses a supercharged version of the VW/Audi 3.0-liter V6 engine, generating 333 horsepower, with a 47-horspower electric motor added in for a total of 380 horsepower and a total of 428 foot-pounds of torque at just 1000 rpm. close to the output of the 4.8-liter V8 engine in the regular S model. Porsche says the Cayenne Hybrid will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, and reach 150 mph. It's the cleanest, greenest model in Porsche history at 193 gram of CO per kilometer on the European testing cycle. The hybrid system uses a 288-volt nickel metal-hydride (NiMh) Sanyo battery fitted beneath the luggage compartment and regenerative braking, the process of storing electricity regained from applying the brakes and driving under normal conditions. Porsche's very first hybrid system has an E-mode switch, which can operate the vehicle entirely on electricity in slow-moving commuting situations up to 37 mph (we actually saw 41 mph going downhill). In the sailing mode, which can operate up to 97 mph, both the engine and electric motor shut off completely, and the vehicle also shuts down every time it comes to a stop, with regenerative braking to recharge the battery. The battery charging system, developed with battery partner Sanyo, keeps the charge between 45 and 75 percent. The Cayenne S Hybrid is a full parallel hybrid, meaning that it can operate on electricity, gasoline, or both, and uses the standard 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission. The electric motor and the decoupler or clutch mechanism are placed ahead of the transmission. The system incorporates hill descent control as well as a hill-holder. Porsche estimates that the Cayenne S hybrid will achieve 21 miles per gallon in the city (a 30 percent improvement compared to the V8-powered S version) and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. All Cayenne models except the Turbo come with steel suspension as standard equipment, but for the first time it can be combined with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as an option. PASM is a highly sophisticated system providing active, infinite damper control on the front and rear axle. It offers the choice of the three settings: Comfort, Normal and Sport. The Cayenne Turbo comes with a new air suspension system with PASM standard. The more powerful models have functional design cues indicating higher levels of performance. The Cayenne Turbo is distinguished by larger grilles that increase the amount of air flowing through the engine bay. The Cayenne is not small, measuring nearly 191 inches in length. That's about the same length as the current BMW X5 (191.2 inches) and Mercedes M-Class (188.5 inches). Cayenne is 75.9 inches wide, about the same as the X5 (76.1 inches) or a half-inch wider than M-Class (75.2 inches). Cayenne's wheelbase measures 114 inches. In size, Cayenne most closely matches Volkswagen's Touareg, which is no surprise given the two vehicles were developed jointly by Porsche and VW. Engines and other Cayenne components are built by Porsche in Zuffenhausen, Germany, and mated to the Cayenne at an assembly plant in Leipzig. Cayenne, Touareg, and the Audi Q7 share basic structures, though the Audi is stretched for more passenger space. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression During our time in and around Birmingham, Alabama, and at Barber Motorsports Park, we were able to drive the Hybrid, Turbo and S versions of the Cayenne, and we came away impressed. The Cayenne in any form is a wonderful, quiet, plush, and luxurious highway cruiser, but the V8 S version and the Turbo will find their way around a racetrack with amazing alacrity, very little body lean in hard corners, and no bad behavior. The Turbo version is rated by Porsche to run the 0-60 mph sprint in a mere 4.4 seconds, and has a top speed of 172 mph, about 50 mph higher than a typical SUV. There are very few twin-turbocharged, direct-injection V8 engines in the SUV world, and this one generates 500 horsepower and 516 foot-pounds of torque, which gives the Cayenne absolutely breathtaking performance, but also allows towing of over 7700 pounds. The highway cruising behavior of any of the Cayenne models is exemplary. The air spring suspension and the big tires act together as giant shock absorbers for whatever dips, ruts, hole and bumps are in the road. The brakes on the Cayenne are enormous, with six-pistons calipers up front and four-piston calipers at the rear, with 15.3-inch front discs and 14-inch rear discs, enough braking power to stop a freight train on a dime. The hybrid version is meant to be clean and green without being boring or underpowered, and Porsche has done a wonderful job mating a real engine, a real transmission (instead of a CVT), and a clever hybrid package of battery, motor, charging system and electronic controls. The Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) is a further development of the existing Bi-Xenon light system that offers not only dynamic and static cornering lights, but also continuous light leveling and speed-sensitive headlight control with separate modes for roads and interstates. The system is standard on the Cayenne Turbo and an option on the other models. The new Lane Change Assistant (LCA) monitors traffic in the adjacent lanes up to 230 feet behind the vehicle, including the driver's blind spots. As soon as another vehicle enters the blind spots or approaches rapidly from behind within a range of 180 feet, an LED warning light illuminates on the inside of the corresponding exterior mirror. If the driver uses the turn signal, the flashing light appears to alert the driver of the approaching vehicle. Adaptive Cruise Control uses radar to monitor and maintain the preset distance between the Cayenne and vehicles in front of it by restricting the throttle or applying the brakes. If the vehicle in front decelerates, ACC will continue to reduce speed, all the way down to a complete stop. ACC operates at speeds from 20 to 100 mph. The required braking power is calculated by the system and by Porsche Stability Management (PSM) building up brake pressure. If the distance between the Cayenne and the vehicle ahead becomes too small, the system alerts the brake standby function to shorten the stopping distance required. It also pre-fills the brake system for quicker response and gives the driver both a visual and an acoustic warning and an additional brake pulse. The center console grab handles that were a trademark of the original Cayenne are still there, with a new design. Rear-seat room is more generous, thanks to the 1.6-inch extended wheelbase for 2011. The second seat now slides fore-and-aft by 6.3 inches, and the backrest can be adjusted to three different angles, or up to 6 degrees. Porsche's traditional five round-instrument gauge cluster now includes a high-resolution circular 4.8-inch TFT screen to the right of the tach. It can be used to change radio stations, vehicle settings, access the navigation system or view the map. The Cayenne S Hybrid instrument cluster differs as the instruments provide the driver with all information he or she needs to monitor car's innovative hybrid system and maximize its efficiencies. The 2011 Cayenne comes with the same audio and communication systems found in the Panamera, with a standard Bose Surround Sound and the optional Burmester high-end Surround Sound System. All U.S. Cayenne models include Bluetooth telephone connectivity and an audio interface to connect an iPod or a USB stick with the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system as standard equipment. They've always been great to look at, but for a lot of modern drivers, what equated to impressive street manners in the 1950s simply doesn't translate to 2014. For that reason, there is a tendency to go overboard with updating these cars with modern hardware but this '57 Bel Air two-door hardtop offers the perfect balance of classic looks and modern behavior. The subject of a detailed body-off restoration, this tri-five Chevy retains a nearly stock appearance while offering a 427 cubic inch, a smooth-shifting Tremec transmission, power steering, and air conditioning everything you need to enjoy this car on modern roads. The beneficiary of two recent restorations, the first was a complete frame off restoration which was finished in 2008. 2012 brought the most recent restoration that included a new frame, work inside the engine compartment, and a repaint. Today it sits as a decorated award winner in vibrant silver that was borrowed from the Mercedes-Benz line of colors. Zoom in on the details and you'll find all the correct trim in place and ready for show. The front is a gorgeous combination of gold and silver, lead by a pristine chrome bumper. Pointed fenders are capped in chrome and the hood dcor continues the sense of forward motion. The greenhouse is filled with clean glass edged in well-preserved stainless trim, while round mirrors sit just beyond either vent window. A trio of gold fender louvers introduce the side profile and the iconic side trim flows back and opens up above the rear fender as the fins continue back. Out back, the sharp fins are capped in chrome, while a golden Chevrolet emblem and V badge fill in the center. At the very back you will find another wrap-around rear bumper, while the dual exhausts exit out just behind the rear tires. Lift the big silver hood and you'll find a fantastic blend of show and go sitting within the engine bay. Powering the Bel Air is a 427 cubic inch Big Block Mark IV V8 bored .030 over with a complete Reher Morrison top end. The big block creates a dyno-proven 587hp at 7000RPM and looks incredible while doing so. At the top of the engine is a polished aluminum air filter that sits atop a Holly ultra HP 850 CFM carburetor shoving the air/fuel mixture through an Edelbrock Victor series intake. Inside the block is a cross drilled nitrited forged steel crankshaft, Forged 11.3 pistons with 119cc heads, Molly perfect circle rings, Clevite H-series race bearing mains, Lunati solid mechanical roller cam, and a HP cam bearing set. Spent gasses travel out the Reher Morrison heads through a set of custom Hooker Super comp long-tube coated headers before entering dual exhausts. Bolted to that massive 427 is a Centerforce clutch and pressure plate that transfers those 587hp to the Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual transmission. From there the power travels down the driveshaft and puts the power to the ground thanks to a Ford 9" rear axle that has been equipped with a 3.70 posi differential with 31-spline Moser axles. At the front of the car you'll find Heidts front control arms with QA1 adjustable coil-over shocks and in the rear an upgraded tri-angulated 4-bar suspension equipped with adjustable QA1 coil-over shocks holds the Ford 9" in place. Stopping power comes courtesy of Wilwood 12" disc brakes being equipped at every corner. In front of those brakes the entire car sits on 18" and 20" Boyd Coddington Aluminum Junkyard Dog Wheels that have been wrapped in Nitto NT555 Extreme. Inside you will find a completely custom red and silver vinyl interior by Cars Interior. When it comes to interiors, even the best stitch-master would be hard-pressed to create something more attractive than a stock '57 Bel Air interior. The custom red and silver interior in this hardtop is a great reminder of that. Swing open either door to admire beautifully styled door panels with fresh trim, and hardware. Fisher Body door sill plates protect the threshold while fresh red carpets protected by new rubber mats greet your arrival. A pair of bench seats offers spacious accommodations for four, wrapped in the same striking red and silver vinyl as the door panels. Slide into the driver's seat for a better look at the controls. You'll notice right off the bat the Ididit steering column. Behind the red wheel, the stylish Bel Air dash reads only 497 miles and hosts a trio of gauges that measure temperature, speed, and fuel, while to either side, stainless pulls control the accessories. Vents underneath the dash distribute cooled air from the HVAC system and an upgraded radio provides entertainment for the ride thanks to a Custom Autosound receiver and 10-disc CD changer. The whole cabin is topped by a taut, red headliner completed by a dome light and matching red visors. We aren't the only ones who think this '57 Chevy is immaculate.
