This incredible Mercury kustom! With the universal appeal of high dollar eye candy, and the road going prowess of a fully sorted cruiser, this slick Monterey is a unique, well built classic that provides its owner the best of both worlds. And what's better: you can have your show stopper and drive it too for a fraction of the money and time it takes to complete a ground-up build. If you're an anxious buyer who's tired of the 'garage furniture' culture that seems to pervade the classic car hobby, this stunning Merc is one of the coolest road-ready customs your money can buy! BODYWORK/TRIM Purchased in 2008 as a fully restored driver, this slick hardtop has been carefully finessed into a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Of course, every work of art needs a solid canvas, and under the car's many modifications you'll find solid steel that, based on appearance, has never been botched or wrinkled in any significant way. That smooth surfacing makes for a super clean profile that's been laboriously block-sanded and covered in a stunning combination of Ford Red Candy Metallic and Jet Black 2-stage. And ultimately, the car debuted as an excellent looking classic that walks a fine line between traditional street rod swing and outrageous SoCal flair. A kustom in the truest sense of the term, this Merc gets cues from a variety sources both literal and figurative. At the front of the car, a lightly massaged grille frames frenched headlights, a factory-spec bumper, and a '50 Ford hood that's been nosed and louvered. Behind that hood, factory-tint glass founds mirrored wipers and straight stainless frames beneath small vent visors and a modified, NOS windshield visor. Beneath that glass, '55 Pontiac profile trim perfectly complements factory rocker guards and factory fender skirts. At the edges of that trim, Buick-style portholes and correct Monterey badging add a little form while traditional door handles and classy mirrors instill a little function. And at the back of the car, dualed '95 Cadillac taillights frame a decked trunk and an Impala-branded fuel filler above a snazzy '55 Pontiac bumper. ENGINE Many Dearborn kustoms get by on traditional flathead power. And I do mean "get by" in the most literal sense of the phrase. While extremely cool, and chock full of character, flatheads aren't particularly known for earth-shaking performance when strapped to heavy '50s metal. Sourced directly from GM Performance Parts, this Merc's sprier personality comes courtesy of a 350 cubic inch ZZ4 crate engine that twists stout 10 to 1 compression into 355 horsepower and 405 lb./ft. of torque. The mean motor's energy mixture is supplied by a coated Holley carburetor, which is sandwiched between an Edelbrock Performer intake and polished, transverse air cleaner. That mixture travels in to aluminum L98 cylinder heads, which hang polished valve covers and polished breathers over stamped rocker arms and hypereutectic pistons. That valvetrain combusts thanks to a forged, internally-balanced crank, powdered connecting rods and a billet cam. Fire for that combustion comes courtesy of a modern HEI distributor and Autolite Professional Series plug wires. That fire is kept in check by a beefy radiator, which is mated to chrome flex hoses and a polished expansion tank. Traditional V-belts spin a rebuilt alternator opposite a modern AC compressor while spent gases are cycled through iron GM manifolds. And first-rate details include: an Optima battery, a small pressure gauge, a Wilwood proportioning valve and a Holley fuel regulator. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Every good street rod has a solid foundation. Flip this polished classic upside down and you'll find a roster of mechanical improvements that mix vintage looks with modern mobility. Behind the small block, a tough 700R4 4-speed features an adjustable lock-up converter. That gearbox drives a sturdy, highway friendly axle, which rides on traditional leaf springs and small lowering blocks. Opposite that axle, an independent front-half features power rack-and-pinion steering. Power front disc and rear drum brakes are a welcome addition and big performance upgrade. There's a true-dual exhaust system that mixes throaty Magnaflow mufflers with polished stainless tips. And everything rides on old school steelies, which spin 215/75R15 Dean Alpha 365 whitewalls around what appear to be '50s Dodge hubcaps. INTERIOR Like its solid mechanicals and striking body, this Monterey's interior is an eclectic mix of bests. A '59 Chevy dash hangs modern air conditioning, clear Dolphin telemetry and a crisp Sony CD player between a Guide traffic light viewer and 12-volt power outlets. In front of that dash, '66 Thunderbird seats feature power adjustment for the car's driver. Between those seats, a custom oil pan console tops premium carpet, which is protected by piped and color-keyed floor mats. That dash, seat and carpet trifecta is cased in a tight headliner and classy factory door panels. In front of the driver, a modern tilt steering column bridges the gap between a '59 Impala wheel and digital gear selector. And behind the passengers, a fully finished trunk hides a small spare tire. OUR SALE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION AND ACCESSORIESA trophy awarded to the car at a local cruise-in This striking Merc is a nicely finished classic that was built to be driven AND seen. It uses top-notch components from some of the best names in the business to create a unique kustom that mixes killer personality with awesome curb appeal. The ultimate lead sled, the archetype, the one that everyone wants, this 1950 Mercury Monterey coupe defines the breed. Frenched, louvered, lake pipes, fender skirts, it has all the traditional custom styling cues, all wrapped in a gorgeous candy paint job that ideally suits the long, low custom. Paired with the bulletproof reliability of a small block Chevy and a tasteful interior, this is a lead sled that\'s very easy to love. This car could have been the prototype for every Mercury lead sled built, incorporating some of the most traditional modifications and a few tasteful touches that make it unique. The list of body mods is extensive, ranging from a nosed and decked hood punched full of louvers, to the frenched headlights, to the custom grille, and stretching back to the nicely faired-in lake pipes and shaved door handles. Of course, classic accessories like the dual spotlights and blue dot taillights make it look period-perfect, and the smoothie look is quite evident from any angle. The Raspberry Pearl paint glows from within and has a sugary look that makes this car insanely appealing. Big chrome bumpers offset all that luscious paint with a big of flash, plus the stainless side trim that makes this car look long and low. Fender skirts are signed with the car\'s \"Wild Thing\" name, and there are expertly done pinstripes in all the usual spots. Handsome two-tone leather seats are an upscale contrast to the high-visibility exterior, and the overstuffed seats mean this is a fantastic road trip car. With a 1949 Mercury dashboard, it has a classic look, nicely rendered in satin gray to match the upholstery. The instruments are a combination of original speedometer and aftermarket auxiliary gauges that work rather well together and you\'ll note the knobs have all been replaced with glass beads for a neat custom look. A tilt steering column carries a woodgrained Grant GT steering wheel and that vintage-looking shifter is connected to a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission. Under-dash A/C uses modern components and R134a refrigerant to deliver contemporary performance and there\'s a Sony AM/FM/CD/iPod stereo in the center of the dash. Red under-dash lighting gives it a cool glow at night, and the trunk is neatly finished with burgundy carpets and a matching fifth wheel. For motivation, this one uses a 350 cubic inch Chevy V8 with the usual upgrades. There\'s a mild performance cam inside so the idle sounds suitable for a custom, a Weiand intake is fed by an Edelbrock intake and there\'s a serpentine belt drive on the front of the engine for easy maintenance. It\'s based on a 4-bolt main block, so it\'s sturdy, and with a few chrome bits the engine bay is dressed quite nicely for a custom. The ram\'s horn exhaust manifolds feed a custom dual exhaust system with Flowmasters, so it sounds wicked even just cruising the fairground, and with air shocks out back, you can adjust the ride height when you have passengers in the back seat, so it always looks and sits right. The rear end is out of a 1969 Camaro, so it\'ll handle anything the small block dishes out. 15-inch chrome steelies with baby moon hubcaps are the ideal period custom wheel and they carry BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall radials, as you\'d expect. A lot of customs look great but don\'t drive very well, but this Mercury truly runs as well as it looks. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Dallas/Fort Worth showroom. ford finally replaced the venerable flathead V8 in 1954, delivering an all-new OHV V8 that worked especially well in the right-sized 1954 mercury Monterey hardtop. Slightly more powerful than the Ford version, the slick Merc also offered clean styling and wonderful \'50s details that only add to this nicely preserved car\'s allure. From its all-original interior to the recently freshened paint, this is an unusual \'50s cruiser that really moves. Repainted quite recently in its original Parklane Green with a white top, this \'54 Merc is the antidote for \'50s excess. Trim, well-proportioned, and with just the right amount of chrome, it looks upscale without being showy. As a very nicely preserved original car before the paint job two years ago, the sheetmetal was in excellent shape, needing only minor work to get it into its current outstanding condition. Nice panel fit means the doors close with a precision that modern cars can\'t match, and with the long chrome side spears, alignment is especially critical. The color is exactly right, too, with no modern metallics in it to take away from the vintage shine, although urethane paints mean that it\'ll look this good for years to come. The chrome is a combination of restored and original components, with a tidy-looking grille that\'s a bit simpler than the year before and great stainless details like the emblems on the C-pillars and the beautiful trunk medallion. This car is every bit as nice as it looks in photos. The very nicely preserved original interior should tell you all you need to know about how well this car has been treated over the years. The two-tone upholstery is 1954 vinyl which might show a few signs of age, but probably not decades\' worth. A few nips and tucks have kept it in very usable shape and given the hobby\'s newfound love for originality, it would be a crime to try to restore the passenger compartment of this Merc. The seats, door panels, and even the carpets defy the years and speak well of the guys who cared for it. Instruments are sensibly laid out with a large speedometer and smaller auxiliary gauges underneath, and the two-tone dash matches the bodywork quite nicely, even with the repaint. The original AM radio is still in the dash and the 3-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission is managed from a familiar column shifter. The back seat looks like a great place to spend some time, and the trunk still carries its original mats and spare tire with matching hubcap. The 256 cubic inch Y-block V8 was all-new in 1954, and offered more power and less weight than the flathead it replaced. Smooth as silk with a bubbly idle, it still looks quite correct under the hood, from the oil bath air cleaner to the unique wrap-around exhaust manifolds. That certainly appears to be factory-applied engine enamel and aside from a few routine maintenance parts, it\'s pretty much as the factory built it. With highway-friendly gears out back, it\'s a very pleasant highway cruiser that purrs along at modern speeds. The chassis is undercoated, which only highlights a few recent service items like the tailpipe and brake lines, but otherwise it\'s also quite original. Correct BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall tires look great on those bright red wheels with full wheelcovers. An unusual \'50s cruiser with plenty of power and a demure look, this 1954 Mercury Monterey is every bit as wonderful as you remember your own being back in the day. Call today!
