The Nissan Murano is a crossover vehicle that integrates function and high fashion. It combines sport-utility cargo capacity and sporty driving dynamics. The Murano can be had with either front-wheel, or all-wheel drive, and is available in S, SV, SL, or LE trim levels. The Murano features Nissan's 3.5-liter six-cylinder VQ engine, which generates 260 horsepower. The engine is mated to an Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with adaptive shift control. Standard features for the Murano include 18-inch (20-inch on LE) alloy wheels, cruise control, LED rear taillights, and dual zone automatic air conditioning. Standard safety equipment includes, vehicle traction and stability control, brake assist, six airbags, and front seat active head restraints. Source: Model Reviews Introduction Structurally, the new Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet is far more than a Murano crossover SUV with the top chopped off, but basically it's not. Introduced at the LA Auto Show November 2010, it was met with skepticism and kidding, for solving a problem nobody knew they had. The story goes that the CrossCabriolet was the brainchild of Nissan's dynamic president, Carlos Ghosn; the idea was met with disbelief, but what the president wants, the president gets. So here it is, and only time will tell if it's too far out there, or if it's the reinvention of versatility, as Nissan marketing now calls it. It can't be denied that some people actually do need an SUV convertible. The market for the CrossCabriolet is mostly the Northeast, for those who need four-wheel-drive traction in cold winters, and want open-air enjoyment in hot summers. Call it the first climate change car, built for our new weather extremes. All-wheel drive is standard on the Murano CrossCabriolet. The CrossCabriolet maintains the silhouette of a Murano, but about four-fifths of the sheetmetal is new, everything except the A-pillars, hood and front fenders. Edgy fender flares front and rear and a gap for off-road ground clearance over the tires make the CrossCabriolet statement: Take me to the boonies, I'm ready. The look is especially striking when the top is down. The Nissan design team wanted to express a feeling of sky and earth, and they have. Two of the Murano doors have been sacrificed in order to keep the roofless chassis structure strong. The remaining two doors have been widened nearly 8 inches to allow easier entry and exit to the rear seat. The CrossCabriolet is a four-seater, instead of the Murano's five. The quality cloth top with fabric liner comes in black or beige, and looks sleek with its low profile. Using aluminum and magnesium rails, it goes up or down in 25 seconds. There's a unique narrow skylight that runs the width of the top, and is located just over the rear glass, filtering light onto the heads of the rear passengers and making the interior feel more open. When the top is down, the tall windscreen and the car's high beltline make passengers feel confined and protected. Even with the windows lowered at 75 mph, there isn't much buffeting. Raise the windows and it's whisper quiet with nothing but the sky above. The overall lines of the interior, including wonderfully comfortable seats, are sculpted and curved, subtly, so it works. However legroom in the rear has been lost, as space had to be made for the top when it's down. It's a pretty slim 32.7 inches now. Cargo space is slim, as well. The CrossCabriolet uses the exceptional Nissan 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine, with all-wheel drive and a second-generation CVT transmission with good logic control, but no manual mode. The ride is very smooth. Handling isn't nimble but neither is it heavy. The CrossCabriolet feels like it's pulling a lot of weight when you accelerate uphill to maybe 40 mph. But when you get out on the freeway and boot it, all 265 horses behind the wonderful engine pull you smoothly and effortlessly up to 80 miles per hour. We love this engine. No one looks twice at a Murano any more, but everyone, especially women, looked at our CrossCabriolet as we drove it around Southern California streets with the top down. Regardless of whatever ribbing Nissan has been taking for solving a problem that nobody had, when a carmaker comes up with a car that everybody looks at and smiles at, they feel they've done something right. Besides, some people actually do need an SUV convertible. They need four-wheel-drive traction in cold winters and want open-air enjoyment in hot summers. The CrossCabriolet maintains the silhouette of a Murano, but about four-fifths of the sheetmetal is new, everything except the A pillars, hood and front fenders. There's a new front fascia, and also everything from the reinforced A pillars back, especially the doors. (The Murano also features new styling for 2011.) Two of the Murano doors have been sacrificed in order to keep the roofless chassis structure of the CrossCabriolet strong. The remaining two doors have been widened by 7.9 inches, in order to allow easier entry and exit to the rear seat. There are no B-pillars. The sides of the car curve upward into the shape of a small J, where they meet the low-profile roofline. J-motion waistline, Nissan calls it, the shape adding both roof height and trunk space. The feature is more pronounced with the top down, as it encompasses the heads of the rear passengers and seats them in a secure small well, without blocking their visibility. Sporty-looking brushed aluminum rollbars rise behind their heads, and pop up another six inches if triggered by rollover sensors. The pop-up rollbars will smash the skylight if that happens. It's a horizontal slit over the rear passenger's shoulders that opens things up and raises the roof, at least in the occupants' minds. Edgy fender flares front and rear, and a gap for off-road ground clearance over the tires, make the CrossCabriolet statement: take me to the boonies, I'm ready. The look is especially striking when the top is down. The Nissan design team wanted to express a feeling of 'sky and earth,' and they have. Boomerang taillamps are traced from the Nissan 370Z and Maxima, and split five-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels finish off the styling. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression Our first impression was that the steering wheel shook, over rough pavement. It wasn't the old convertible cowl shake, but it was some kind of shake forward of the A pillars. A fellow journalist with whom we shared seat time called it a vibration, occurring at speeds of 40 mph and below. He felt it on smooth pavement, but we only felt it over patches. Once at 50 mph it shook a lot, at least a lot for a brand-new $46,000 vehicle. The rest of the time, the ride was very smooth. The handling around-town wasn't exactly nimble, but it didn't feel heavy as we thought it might. A bit slow, but it is what it is. There's no manual mode to the CVT, which can be a dealbreaker in some cars, but not the CrossCabriolet. Nissan seems to have figured out how to program the continuously variable transaxle so it feels more like an automatic transmission and less like a tachometer-jumping CVT. Nissan calls their second-generation CVT Xtronic, using Adaptive Shift Control for sporty response. We like it. The CrossCabriolet feels like it's pulling a lot of weight, when you accelerate uphill to maybe 40 mph, even with its 248 pound-feet of torque, which peaks at 4400 rpm. That's because it is; it's pulling 4438 pounds, or 230 pounds more than the Murano, distributed at 57/43. That knocks 1 mpg off the fuel mileage, down to 17 highway and 22 city. But when you get out on the freeway and boot it, all 265 horses behind the wonderful 3.5-liter V6 pull you smoothly and effortlessly up to 80 miles per hour. We love this engine, and always have. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The CrossCabriolet interior begins where the Murano top of the line interior ends, says Nissan. The only option for the entire vehicle is Camel leather, and although it's the same double-stitched leather as the black or beige, the beautiful brown color (with black trim) might just be worth it. The overall lines of the interior, including the very comfortable seats, are sculpted and curved, subtly, so it works. The forward view of the rear seat passengers is helped by sloping shoulders of the front seats. The trim looks nice in half-matte chrome finish, which we usually just describe as brushed aluminum. There's just enough wood trim, light or darker, on the console and front-door armrests. From the high driver's seating position, it feels like what it is: a big SUV with no roof. Visibility out the rear with the top up is pinched a bit, but sideview mirror visibility is good. The instruments look clean and sharp in white on black, and all the buttons and knobs on the dashboard and center console are good and functional. A 7-inch display screen is used by the rearview camera whenever backing up. The rest of the time it's used by the navigation system, which comes with XM traffic. With the top down, the interior space is sheltered from the wind. 'Confined and protected,' Nissan says, describing the feeling. We drove the CrossCabriolet with the windows up, down, half up, and front-rear up-down, and were sheltered all ways. So no screen or shield seems to be needed, behind the rear seats or at the top of the windshield. Turbulence is kept out of the car by the tall windshield, high beltline, and high rear shoulders from the J-motion design. Conversations between driver and passenger are easy. We didn't have any passengers in the rear seat, but even they should be able to talk to the driver without having to shout into the wind. Even with the windows down at 75 mph, there wasn't much buffeting. When we raised the windows, it got whisper quiet even at that speed. Those backseat passengers are positioned 3.6 inches closer to the front seat, than in the Murano SUV. Rear legroom has been lost, down to a slim 32.7 inches from 36.3 inches, to create storage space for the soft top. The good news is that there's tons of hip room with the rear bench reduced from three seats to two, with a console and two fixed cupholders in between. The front seatbacks flop forward and the seats slide forward, to enable entry and exit for the back seat. It's not the slickest method we've come across, but it works. With the top up, there's good trunk room of 12.3 cubic feet. When the top is down it rides on a shelf in the back, so trunk space then gets slashed to 7.6 cubic feet. Cargo space is not the CrossCabriolet's strong point. The quality cloth top with fabric liner comes in black or beige, and looks sleek with its low profile. Using aluminum and magnesium rails, it goes up or down in 25 seconds, even with the car moving at a few miles per hour, for example if you're in a freeway traffic jam and a thunder shower comes along; or the opposite, and you decide you might as well get some rays while you're stuck in traffic. It's ideal if you want 4WD traction in winter and sun on your face in summer. Its high beltline provides a cozy and secure cabin that's sheltered from the wind with room for four. And it comes fully loaded. The soft top is sleek when it's up and goes down in 25 seconds. The V6 engine is wonderful and the transmission is great. The spacious cabin is finished like that of a more expensive car and it has comfortable and supportive seats. There's a 60/40-split rear seat that folds flat, opening up the trunk space and creating a large flat cargo area that's handy for hauling long items. The Sentra is fun to drive, with a level of performance and handling that's a pleasant surprise in a compact sedan. It's powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder of 140 horsepower, which is matched to a very nice 6-speed manual in the base car, with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) optional in the base car and standard on all other trim levels. Fuel economy is an EPA-rated 24 mpg City, 31 mpg Highway with the manual and a very thrifty 27/34 mpg with the CVT. Two high-performance versions are available: Sentra SE-R has a 2.5-liter engine with 177 hp and the CVT. With its crisp character lines, the Sentra resembles a scaled down Altima. We like the new front end; it manages to look both cleaner and richer and more upscale, all at once. The previous look was sort of angular, with the fog lamps in sharp-edged openings and what seemed like a lot of cuts and creases, but the new front end is smoother. The grille opening looks like that of a more expensive car, and the integration of the grille, lower air intake, headlamps and fog lamps is much cleaner and less busy. The new look also works well with the short overhangs, which give the Sentra a sporty, assertive appearance. Along the sides, only widened bodywork around the wheels breaks up the clean, attractive doors and quarter panels. A character line rises from the front door back to a tall trunk, giving the Sentra a bit of a rake. Large door openings make it easy to climb in and out, and a high, distinctive rear deck offers ample trunk space. The contemporary Nissan appearance continues at the rear, where the high trunk lid is flanked by white and red taillights that have a Nissan family look. The long roof line resolves itself in a short trunk lid, extended on most models by a small horizontal spoiler that incorporates the center brake light. Sentra SE-R models have more aggressive front and rear fascias, side sill extensions that visually lower the car, and beefy, low-profile 17-inch tires on alloy wheels. No matter what Sentra you choose, you'll make no compromises in looks, comfort, safety or style, to have this inexpensive compact car in your driveway. Boasting an aluminum block and head, continuously variable valve timing, and electronic fuel injection, the 2.0-liter makes 140 horsepower. However, the real story is its strong torque of 147 pound-feet. Torque is important because it's needed for acceleration from lower speeds, such as when accelerating from an intersection or up a steep grade, and the Sentra feels quite powerful around town and in traffic. Our Sentra 2.0 zoomed up freeway on-ramps, and felt like it belonged in the fast lane. It ran in 80-mph traffic with ease and had no trouble cruising at 90. The engine wasn't loud and didn't feel strained at that pace, although under full-throttle acceleration it was a bit noisy from 5000 rpm up to its redline of 6500. Fuel economy for a Sentra with the 2.0-liter engine is an EPA-rated 27/34 mpg City/Highway with the CVT transmission, and 24/31 mpg with the six-speed manual. The CVT is now in its third generation, and the technology has improved greatly. The main benefit with a CVT is better gas mileage, a result of less internal friction. With only two ranges, high and low, it's smoother because there's less shifting, though the sound is odd, as if the car is winding up like a snowmobile. Floor the gas pedal and the Sentra surges ahead aggressively. The Sentra SE-R Spec V feels docile in traffic, in spite of the performance from its 200-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder. It makes its best power near redline, from 6600-7000 rpm, so you need to drive it enthusiastically to get the most out of it. It doesn't feel high-strung, however. It's easy to live with and provides that extra bit of oomph when you want to play. The Spec V comes with an easy-shifting six-speed manual transmission and the clutch works with ease, making the Spec V feel more like an everyday driver than a sport compact. The suspension on all Sentras is struts in front with a torsion beam in the rear: The rear is a compact design with separate shocks and coil springs that allows more room for the trunk that's above it. In its base form, the suspension is forgiving. In its most aggressive state, in the SE-R Spec V (with higher-rate springs, shocks and bushings), it's firm in a quality kind of way, yet never harsh or uncomfortable. It feels rugged and inspires confidence out there in the cruel world of roadway realities. It even felt comfortable over a series of Chicago potholes. We haven't driven the standard SE-R, but we suspect it is also quite comfortable. We had the opportunity to drive the SE-R Spec V at the fast 4.0-mile Road America circuit near Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. We found it to be fun but not razor sharp. The engine revved predictably, without climbing too quickly for the driver to keep up with gear shifts. The brakes didn't fade during our high-speed lap, and the handling gave nice feedback. We also thrashed it around an autocross course. The engine provided good power out of corners, so much so that we spun the inside wheel. We would recommend the optional limited-slip differential for anyone wanting to do parking-lot autocrosses or other hard driving in the Spec V. The car leaned more in quick, sharp turns than an autocrosser would like, and wasn't as sharp as the likes of a Mini Cooper S or BMW 1 Series. Overall, when it comes to ride and handling, the Spec V is a comfortable road car, with decent handling that provides a lot of feedback as it approaches the edge of adhesion. The brakes felt good on the street. Base models have vented 11-inch discs in front and drums in rear. The SE-R has 11.7-inch front discs and 11.5-inch rear discs, and the SE-R Spec V gets 12.6-inch front rotors. ABS is now standard on all models, right down to the base 2.0. We recommend ABS because the anti-lock brakes allow you to brake and steer at the same time in a panic stop. The Sentra uses electric power steering, as opposed to hydraulic. It's speed-sensitive, which means the feel is lighter when parking and heavier out on the freeway, as it should be. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorThe Nissan Sentra is a good choice for drivers who spend a lot of time in their cars. For example, the locking glovebox is deep enough to hold a laptop computer. There is also an available integrated removable CD holder on the headliner above the driver's sun visor. The front of the center console has a tray for items such as cell phones, as well as two cupholders that are adjustable for 20-ounce bottles or 32-ounce mega cups. Pockets with see-through netting are provided on the backs of the front seats for passengers' cell phones and iPods. The Sentra's interior volume measures 97.4 cubic feet, more than many of its competitors. The trunk measures 13.1 cubic feet (12.0 cubic feet for the SE-R Spec V). To increase cargo space, the 60/40 split rear seat can be folded flat, to open up the space into the trunk (due to a structural bulkhead, the SE-R Spec V lacks the folding seat). There's no problem fitting a bicycle or maybe two back there, through the trunk; two friendly people could even sleep back there. We've spent time with a bare-bones Sentra 2.0 with cloth seats, a fully equipped 2.0 SL with leather, and a SE-R Spec V with its sport seats. We liked all of them. We loved the supportive feel of the cloth seats; they embrace your back like a good hug, and are neither too firm nor too soft. The available leather is plush for a compact car; there's no reason to ride in a penalty box just because you're trying to save gas. The SE-R's sport seats are better bolstered and have a grippy fabric to keep the driver in place during enthusiastic cornering. They also get more flair, with special stitching and red seat belts on the Spec V. The four-speaker sound system in the 2.0 was okay, while the eight-speaker Rockford Fosgate audio system offered in the 2.0 SL was great. The optional SD-card-based navigation system includes a 5-inch color touch screen display and XM NavTraffic (XM subscription required, sold separately). A long wheelbase with short overhangs results in agreeable legroom for the rear-seat passengers. The back seats are relatively flat, however, so they won't be comfortable for long trips. The instrument panel might be the nicest aspect of the interior. Again, it is very stylish, and functional, too. The instruments are sharp, the controls easy to operate, and the center stack features a strong-looking shift lever rising out at an agreeable angle, where it's easy to grab and operate. The trim around it all is a handsome flat silver. SE-R models get two additional gauges at the top of the center stack, one for oil pressure and one that displays acceleration and deceleration g forces. The rear-wheel drive G37 is named for its 3.7-liter V6 engine, available with between 325 and 330 horsepower depending on the model. This smooth, powerful engine comes with a new seven-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The G37 comes in Base, Journey, and Sport 6MT trims. The styling is aggressive yet subtle with abounding curves and the G series heritage is apparent in both design and performance. Standard safety features include six airbags, traction control and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes. The Infiniti G shares major chassis and mechanical components with the Nissan 370Z sports car, so their sporting character may come as no surprise. We've been noting an ever-increasing level of refinement, the Achilles heal of these cars. Interior finish has steadily improved the past several years. For 2010, Infiniti G37 models get subtle interior updates and more standard equipment along with some subtle styling revisions. Sedan, coupe and convertible deliver comparable performance. While the G37 Sedan offers five-passenger seating, the Coupe and Convertible models add sex appeal. All-wheel drive is available for the sedan and coupe for greatly improved traction and handling in snow and rain, helping tame the torque these cars can otherwise deliver to their rear wheels. All come standard with rear-wheel drive, which delivers handling characteristics front-wheel drive can't usually match. The standard seven-speed automatic transmission is tuned for sporting response, with available steering wheel paddles for manual shifting. The G37's 3.7-liter V6 engine is more powerful than that in many competitors, and it's tuned for the response and excitement that enthusiast drivers prefer. The four-door G37 Sedan is Infiniti's best seller, and a true sports sedan, reacting to driver commands in the fashion of a sport-tuned coupe. Yet it seats four comfortably in all circumstances, with easy in-out access and plenty of stowage space in the trunk. The V6 delivers 328 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque in the sedan. The two-door G37 Coupe looks racier than the sedan. Rear-seat legroom is more restricted, however, so two adults may not be too happy in the coupe's back seat for long. Its instrumentation is first rate, and its climate, audio and navigation systems are easy to understand and control. The coupe's engine delivers slightly more power: 330 horsepower, 269 pound-feet of torque. The G37 Convertible looks a lot like the coupe, until its three-piece steel top is lowered with a button on the console. Then it's a wide-open cabriolet. The power-retractable steel hard top opens or closes in about 30 seconds. The convertible comes with a Bose Open Air Sound System that automatically adjusts audio levels according to vehicle speed and ambient noise. Its climate control system adjusts fan speed based on vehicle speed when the top is open. The 2010 Infiniti G37 Anniversary Edition, in all body styles, was created to mark Infiniti's 20th anniversary in the United States. It comes with special trim and virtually everything Infiniti offers, but only in Shadow Graphite paint. It will be available in limited quantity. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The Infiniti G37 sedan, coupe, and convertible have similar exterior dimensions and an identical wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels). That's because all variants share the same chassis, despite the differences in styling, with the same mechanical components underneath. They share their basic structure with the Nissan 370Z. The sedan was redesigned for 2007, and it gets a bit of freshening for 2010. The changes for 2010 are most obvious in front, where the fog lights have been moved from their previous location within the headlight clusters to separate housings below the bumper line. In back, the sedan's exhaust tips and rear panel have been reshaped. The G37 Coupe was redesigned for 2008, while the Convertible introduced for 2009. All of the second-generation G37s are swoopier than previous Infiniti Gs though bulkier around the shoulders and hips. From the side or three-quarter view, the G37s, especially the coupe, bear a family resemblance to the Nissan 370Z. The G37s are striking in their appearance. The front wheel cutouts are larger than those on earlier models, leaving less metal for the fenders and making them appear to rise even more. The headlights clusters are loaded with separate lenses, yet they're smaller and sexier. Infiniti calls the aluminum hood (pinned with two latches) a wave hood, although the sea looks pretty flat between the bulging shoreline of the fenders. The 2010 G37 Convertible gets a power folding-mirror function that pulls the side mirrors up against the glass at the driver's request. This G37 has a unique design from the windshield pillars rearward. It's slightly wider than the other models, with a modified rear suspension that allows for the top's power mechanism and stowage space behind the rear seat. The convertible has more heavily reinforced windshield pillars, side members and body sills, which help reduce body flex and vibration when motoring with the top down. When its three-piece steel top is closed, the convertible looks much like the G37 Coupe. Its heavily insulated headliner works almost as well as the coupe's fixed roof at keeping ambient noise outside the car. The automatic top's opening or closing sequence takes approximately 30 seconds from start to finish, initiated with the touch of a button on the center console. Like the other body styles, the convertible has a special, more aggressive looking grille and front end when it's equipped with the Sport package. The factory wheel designs are handsome. The standard 17-inch wheels on 2010 sedans feature a new five-spoke, triple-fork design. The massive 19-inch wheels that are optional fully complement the car's looks. The Anniversary Edition models get a unique set of 19-inch wheels. Created to mark Infiniti's 20th year in the United States, the Anniversary Editions come only in brooding Graphite Shadow paint. Their grilles are blacked out, and their bodies are finished even more aggressively than the Sport 6MT models, with unique chin spoilers, deeper side sills and rear spoilers on the coupe and sedan. Based on the Nissan 370Z, the G37 has a performance edge, a rawness, that sets it apart. Where the G has come up short is in the smoothness, finish and refinement of a luxury car. To Infiniti's credit, it has incrementally but steadily addressed the problem, to the point where the G37 line stands on better footing with the smoothest, most refined cars in its class. This improved balance between edginess and refinement is demonstrated by the G37 Convertible. The Sport 6MT Convertible we drove came very close to the driving sensations one experiences in a pure sports car. The Sport steering is quicker than that in the standard G37s, meaning the car turns more for a given movement of the steering wheel, and the crisp manual shifter has fairly short throws. When the road ahead opens up and starts twisting, the Sport 6MT is a blast to drive. Compared with the coupe, there is a bit more shake in the convertible. There is always more shake when engineers remove the top from a fixed roof car; think of it like snipping a big hole in the side on an aluminum can. The driver feels an extra bit of vibration through the transmission and up into the shift lever, or an occasional wave of slight flexing through the steering column. Still, the G37 Convertible remains a very tight ship when the top is lowered, tighter than many competitors. When it's closed, the three-piece metal roof is essentially as snug and quiet as a fixed hardtop, though you still don't get the structural rigidity of the coupe. On freeways, all G37s cruise comfortably and quietly, and that may be the biggest improvement of all. While they maintain there sporty performance edge, much of the roughness, almost cheapness, has been refined out. The irritating drone that often plagued rear seat passengers in earlier sedans is gone, and when it comes to controlling noise and vibration inside, the G37 competes on much better terms with competitors such as Lexus and Audi. There's little wind noise even at extra-legal speeds. There's more road noise from the optional, larger tire packages than from the standard treads, but the added grip and, frankly, sharper looking 19-inch wheels, are worth it. All G37 variants are equipped with the same 3.7 liter V6, though exact output varies slightly depending on the body style. The Coupe's 330 horsepower is a lot to get out of a non-turbocharged six-cylinder, and it ranks right at the top of the G37's class. The engine features the latest in material and control technology. Its hydraulically controlled variable valve timing system improves not only performance and response, but also emissions and fuel efficiency. All G37s deliver great acceleration. Stand on the gas and they pull right up to maximum rpm, willingly and heartily revving to levels normally associated with smaller, less complex engines. And the character is as important as sheer performance. This V6 generates about 270 pound-feet of torque at a peaky 5200 rpm, and revs to a howling pitch at 7500 rpm, where the rev limiter begins to gently cut fuel. The power comes smooth and quick, accompanied by a unique howl crafted into the exhaust system. You can hear it when a G37 rolls by at 20 mph, and you can hear it from the driver's seat with the windows (or top) down. We guarantee it will bring a smile to your face. You can barely hear it with the windows up, however, thanks to improvements Infiniti has made reducing noise and vibration inside. The seven-speed automatic transmission allows brisk acceleration, with a big overdrive gear that means lower engine speeds and less noise when cruising on the freeway. The automatic does its job casually at part-throttle. Most of the time we stayed in plain old Drive, able to forget the transmission was even there. If the driver moves the stubby leather-wrapped shift lever to the left, however, Sport mode is engaged. The upshifts come at higher rpm, and both upshifts and downshifts are sharper. Holding the right foot hard to the floor produces sharper, more solid shifts at the engine's redline. For more aggressive driving on lightly traveled back roads, we liked the Manual mode. The automatic changes gears quickest and smoothest with either the shift lever or the column-mounted paddles under full throttle; it's like a power shift without the clutch. Credit the engine's control electronics, which feather the throttle through the instantaneous shift. The same electronics deliver smooth downshifts, too, whether in full auto mode or manual override, by blipping the throttle to match engine rpm to transmission speed in the lower gear. It's like double clutching a pure manual gearbox. In short, the G37's seven-speed automatic is excellent, but we still like the conventional six-speed manual. We like it even better that Infiniti offers a manual in a category where such transmissions are increasingly rare. Gear selection is precise, requiring little effort. Clutch operation is heavier than we would expect even on a sports sedan. This can make for sometimes rocky clutch engagement, especially at low speeds and light throttle. The stiff clutch and stiff suspension can be annoying when motoring around the neighborhood at low speeds, especially if the roads are rough. But once the driver is used to it, it's a satisfying operation. The balance of ride and handling is consistently good across the G37 line. The G37 uses rear-wheel drive, like a BMW, rather than front-wheel drive like an Acura. The G37 base and Journey models are a bit more softly sprung than the Sport 6MTs, but none of them float around. Quite the opposite, actually. The 6MT sport-tuned suspension is the preferred choice for hustling down winding roads. It's comfortable cruising the Interstate: solid and taut, managing the G37's mass very well without exacting a price in stiffness. But the sports suspension is firmer than the standard suspension and it will transmit pavement heaves more dramatically into the passenger compartment. The Coupe is the sportiest G37. We're really impressed with the handling, especially with the Sport package. The speed-sensitive power steering is seamless. It turns precisely into corners, with no dead spots through a long curve. The front-midship layout of the G37, with the engine set farther back behind the front axle, is inherently well balanced. Driving hard over roads that would cause almost any car to twitch, the steering wheel stays remarkably steady. The Coupe Sport 6MT is so good it almost has a downside. Pushing harder, over remote, twisty, smooth curves, we felt the standard limited-slip differential and stability electronics (VSD) at work. Or rather, we saw them working thanks to a light on the dash. The corrections are beautifully subtle. You can pitch the G37 to a ridiculous point, and the VSD just gently won't allow the car to get out of shape. It doesn't tell you how wrong you were, by killing engine power for too long, like some electronic stability controls do. The brakes are smooth, predictable, and rock steady, inspiring confidence in any driver. They're also sensitive, and when you jump on them they grab, so it takes a little time to develop the technique for smooth application. The G37 Sport models come with bigger brakes than the others for less fade in repeated hard applications. Infiniti's ATESSA E-TS all-wheel-drive system monitors data such as wheel spin, throttle position and vehicle speed, and automatically diverts up to 50 percent of the engine's power to the front wheels, improving traction and control when road conditions are less than optimal. Yet in ideal conditions, when the road is smooth and dry, the all-wheel drive system still sends all of the power to the rear wheels, preserving the G's sporty rear-drive handling characteristics. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Improvements inside the 2010 Infiniti G37s are subtle, but welcome, and they point to a steady trend over the last several model years. The overall quality of the G37 passenger cabins has increased steadily. They're much better suited to the luxury class than they once were. Generally, the G interior is lively and friendly without being fussy or overly busy. There are features aplenty, tempered by a focus on function and connecting the driver to the car. The materials, fit and finish are good, though we're still not enamored with the graining on some of the harder plastics. There's a vent in each windshield pillar to keep the side windows clear, and the G37 Convertible comes standard with an adaptive climate control system that automatically adjusts airflow and fan speed based on top position and road speed. Lots of rear glass makes for good rearward visibility, even without the optional back-up camera, which is now standard on all but the base G37 Sedan. Getting in and out of the G37 is easy with the four-door sedan, and a bit more difficult with the coupe and convertible, particularly if your driveway has a significant slant. The doors on the two-door models are long and heavy. The slightest incline can make it difficult to lock them in the open position, and they want to fall closed. The perforated leather seats are comfortable, and the standard eight-way driver's seat has adjustable lumbar support. The Sport Package seats have more adjustment and bigger bolsters on the back and bottom cushions. The three-spoke steering wheel is wrapped in hand-stitched perforated leather, with audio and cruise control buttons on its spokes. Optional paddle shifters for the automatic transmission are magnesium, and you can actually reach them with your fingers when hands are placed at 10 and 2 o'clock on the steering wheel. That isn't the case with many cars, and we like the shift sequence, too. You pull back on the right paddle for upshifts, and on the left for downshifts. The dashboard and center console design is the same in all G37 body styles, with slight variation in the front door-panel designs. The dash applies Infiniti's double wave theme, and the company's signature analog clock sits front and center in the center stack of controls. For 2010, Infiniti has switched the standard aluminum trim from Washi to a design it calls Shodo for the sedan and coupe. It's inspired by the traditional art of Japanese calligraphy, and it's elegant. Yet the subtly etched Silk Obi aluminum in our convertible test car might be the most beautiful metal trim we've seen. A high-gloss Maple trim is optional in all models, while Anniversary Edition coupes and convertibles get a unique red-tone Maple. The G37's gauges feature electroluminescent lighting: The needles glow red on a white background. An easy-to-read information display shows useful trip functions like immediate or average fuel mileage, average speed, elapsed time, running distance and distance to empty, as well as outside air temperature, odometer, and warning displays. Both the gauges and display have been upgraded with better resolution for 2010, and we love the crispness. The center stack falls from a high-res LED screen that displays climate and audio data or navigation information. The stereo and climate controls are located out in the open below the information screen, with our preferred layout of audio on top and climate below. The design is attractive and very good from the functional perspective, though the main knobs for volume, temperature, etc. could be larger. The navigation system is controlled by a mouse-like knob below the screen, by touching the screen itself for some functions, or by voice commands. Infiniti's point-and-click device is one of the more effective, least cumbersome interfaces in the luxury class, but it's still more difficult to use than the best touch screens. The nav screen itself is quite sharp. The map offers a bird's-eye view, which gives a perception of distance by incorporating a horizon and, depending on the available mapping data, three-dimensional building footprints for the local surroundings. It's neat to look at, though many testers prefer the regular overhead view because it always keeps North up. The XM Satellite Radio system provides real-time traffic updates on the screen, where available, and for 2010 Infiniti has added the Zagat Restaurant Guide to the navigation software. The G37's standard sound system is competitive with that in any luxury sedan. The upgrade Bose Studio On Wheels audio delivers a sound that's richer, fuller, more intricate and crisper than any system we can recall in cars costing thousands, sometimes tens of thousands of dollars more than the G37. We stepped directly from a G into a $100,000-plus European sports coupe with that marque's top-level sound system and could not distinguish a difference between the two. The upgrade audio is called Bose Open Air in the convertible, and it's standard, with an extra pair of speakers in the front headrests, right behind the ears. It adjusts volume and re-mixes the audio in real time according to ambient noise. And when it's equipped with the navigation system, the G37 adds a 9.3 gigabyte hard drive that will copy about 90 CDs in short order. You'll never have to carry CDs in this car, and the audio directory can access music by artist or type. The front door pockets are small in all G37 models, half-taken by armrests, although each includes a hollow for a water bottle. There are also two cupholders behind the shift lever. The center console has been redesigned for 2010, and cubby storage includes a respectably sized glove box. The back side of each front seatback has a magazine pouch (unless you order the cooled seats in the Premium Package). Two cup holders pop out of the fold-down, rear seat center armrest, which also has a unique compartment masked by a Velcro-type flap on the right side. Interior roominess is competitive for the class. The G37 Sedan's wide rear door openings leave room aplenty for legs, knees and feet when getting in and out of the back seat. The coupe is slightly different story. It doesn't offer much knee room in the rear seats, and the legroom stat of 29.8 inches is the lowest we've seen in a long time. The driveshaft hump runs high between the two rear seats, and there's a wide crack between the seatback and seat bottom that might get uncomfortable over the miles. Overall, the rear seat sends heavy reminders that this is a coupe, not a sedan. You might even think of it as a four-seat Nissan 370Z. Rear seat space in the G37 Convertible is just as tight. Access in both coupe and convertible is at least eased by a power walk-in device with position memory. In both, the front seats move forward automatically at the touch of a button to allow passengers into the rear. With 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space, the G37 Sedan slightly surpasses competitors like the Lexus IS and BMW 3 Series in cargo volume. It falls well short of class leaders like the Audi A4 (17 cubic feet). The G37 Convertible, too, offers competitive trunk space, with 10.33 cubic feet. Of course, that space drops dramatically when the top is lowered under the rear deck, leaving only 1.99 cubic feet for bags or other stuff. With the top down, the trunk in the convertible is really in the back seat. When it comes to trunk space, the G37 Coupe fares worst of all, lagging just about all competitors with 7.4 cubic feet. A folding rear seat back improves things by allowing larger items to flow from the trunk into the passenger space, and it explains that notable crack between the back and bottom cushion when the rear seatback is upright. The convertible's top works easily and without a hitch, but we wish it would operate when the car is rolling at a moderate speed, as the tops do in many high-end convertibles. The Infiniti QX56 is a full-size SUV, designed for towing a heavy trailer, carrying passengers in luxurious comfort, and tackling serious off-road conditions. Available in rear- or four-wheel drive it is powered by a 400-hp 5.6-liter direct injection gasoline V8 engine matched with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The QX56 includes 2nd-row captains chairs to provide standard 7-passenger seating, but can be equipped with a rear bench seat to increase capacity to 8. It comes standard with a power-folding third-row seat, Bluetooth with streaming audio, navigation, and a power liftgate. To allow for safer and easier driving, projector HID headlights and front and rear cameras with Around View Monitor are standard. Safety features include active front head restraints, an electronic stability system, side curtain and front side-impact airbags, and ABS with brake assist. Available features include a rear seat theater package, a technology package with an adaptive front lighting system, and a deluxe touring package with Bose Studio Surround and climate-controlled seats. The Infiniti QX56 carries over from 2012. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Infiniti QX56, now in its third year of this generation, is big, wide, and round. It rides among the seven-seat luxury SUVs with big towing capacities: Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Lexus LX 570, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Audi Q7, Volkswagen Toureg, and Range Rover. Infiniti QX comes with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive with a five-mode system. The QX56 uses a powerful 5.6-liter, 32-valve, double overhead-cam V8 engine with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing and lift, making 400 horsepower and a big 413 foot-pounds of torque. The 7-speed double overdrive transmission enables good acceleration for the 5600-pound vehicle, and delivers 17 mpg fuel mileage at easy freeway speed, considerably less around town or over 70 mph. The transmission has adaptive shifting, matching a driver's style, and a manual mode that provides a sports car's downshift blip, something you don't find on every giant SUV. The all-wheel-drive QX56 has a five-mode dial on the center console with automatic, four-wheel-drive high, four-wheel-drive low, low lock, tow mode and snow mode. The auto mode moves engine torque between the front and rear axles, from 0 front/100 rear to 50/50. If the QX56 were to be described in a word, it would be big. The QX56 seats seven with second-row captain's chairs, or eight with a three-seat bench in the second row. Between the captain's chairs there's a gigantic console with two storage bins and two cupholders. The 60/40 third row seat folds flat, with a power button located in the cargo space. Back in the third row there's good headroom and relatively good legroom, and the seats recline 20 degrees. There's 16.6 cubic feet of space with the third row up, an outer-space-like 95.1 cubic feet with both rows down. The QX56 ride is firm but comfortable, with solid handling assisted by sophisticated electronics. It felt secure on icy highways. The growling V8 is a satisfying engine, with 413 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm. At lower rpm there's strong torque too. But it takes a lot of premium fuel for the engine to push the three-ton SUV down the highway. The QX56 is EPA-rated at 14/20 mpg City/Highway. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround If the Infiniti QX56 were to be described in a word, it would be big. And bulbous; humped smoothly, at least at the hood and front fenders, although the headlights bulge sideways. In the rear, not so smooth. There, that one word might be ugly (we would be gentler, and say not particularly attractive, but that's three words). At the liftgate and taillights, the bulges and lines go everywhere, with two big slabs of chrome slapped on. The back end is cleaned up a bit by the rear bumper being integrated, and the tow hitch receiver being hidden behind a plate in the bumper. The running boards are body-colored, as are splashguards built into the wheel arches. There's no chrome on the body sides like there used to be, except for the door handles, that's nice. The chrome outline around the window makes the QX56 look longer than it is, which is way long, more than 17 feet; however the C-pillar is triangular, turning the chromed window outline forward at the cargo area, so that makes it look like a smaller SUV, and not sleek. That chrome line matches the chrome line of the portholes on the front fenders, which are a nice touch, especially since the left porthole is functional, sucking in air for the engine. Our QX was equipped with the optional 22-inch nine-spoke alloy wheels, which look better in pictures than real life. Standard wheels are 20-inch, and we'd prefer them. The massive grille is unmistakably Nissan/Infiniti, and the headlamps are stylishly angled up and away, bulging for style we guess. The big hood is like a hump, as are the front fenders. You really notice this from the driver's seat. All the time, and it's kind of nice. Your SUV is not lost in the crowd, at least from your point of view. The coefficient of drag is 0.36, good for a truck, and Infiniti says there is zero aerodynamic lift, thanks also to a front underbody spoiler and liftgate spoiler. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The QX56 has solid handling, with electronic assistance all over the place. We'll remember the night we drove into a winter storm warning and through Oregon's icy Columbia River Gorge, hauling that queen bed in the back, like a thief in the night. The QX56 made us feel confident and secure. At least once, the VDC saved us by correcting a slide. It was ahead of us, like it's supposed to be. With winter tires it might not have happened in the first place. The standard 20-inch all-season tires, slightly narrower, might be better on ice and snow than our optional 22-inchers, which cost $2450 on their nine-spoke alloy wheels. We had the all-wheel-drive system set at Auto. Infiniti's All-Mode 4WD system has Auto, 4H and 4L modes. In Auto, up to 50 percent of the engine torque goes to the front wheels when needed for traction. The torque and growl of the V8 is recognizably Nissan. We remember that feel from the Titan pickup truck. It's a satisfying engine, with 413 foot-pounds of torque at 4000 rpm. At lower rpm there's strong torque too. The 5.6-liter 32-valve DOHC aluminum-alloy V8 features Infiniti's advanced VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) technology and Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) system. The VVEL system combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side to help improve performance and response. Throttle response is enhanced by directly controlling the intake valve, rather than using the traditional method of controlling intake with the throttle valve. The VVEL system also offers improved emissions and fuel efficiency (over non-variable valve designs) by reducing the intake resistance that occurs when the engine's throttle valve opening is narrowed and output is low. The DIG direct-injection system provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (versus a non direct-injection system) by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering more precise injection control. The powerful engine smoothly drives the whopping weight of the QX56, reaching three tons with driver. But when it does, you can't help thinking how much energy spelled g-a-s it takes. High-test gas. The QX56 is EPA rated at 14/20 mpg City/Highway; we got 17.1 mpg on the highway, most of it at a gentle 60 mph. Its greenhouse gas rating is an unimpressive 3 on a scale of 1 to 10, and its smog rating is a 5. We have driven the QX56 for hours in a day-long rainstorm in Kentucky, so we know the brakes work when wet. The vented brake rotors are big, 13.8 inches. We like the feel of the pedal, and the solid anti-lock brakes, tested on snowy streets in Washington. Electronic systems that take over stopping and steering the car are available. The Intelligent Braking System (Technology Package) uses sonar ranging to stop the QX56 without the driver's input as it approaches a stopped vehicle, and Distance Control Assist prompts the driver to release the throttle and applies the brakes in slowing traffic. The QX56 also uses the brakes to take over the steering; the $3100 Technology Package also includes Lane Departure Prevention, which responds to potential unintended lane departure with a buzzer. If the driver doesn't obey the buzzer and steer back, the system applies the brakes on the opposite side of the alleged wander, forcing the car back. Here's the problem, in the fine print: the system turns potential into reality, which might be wrong. We've had it happen, although not in our QX56. The car fights the driver from doing what the driver knowingly with eyes-wide-open wants to do. The 7-speed transmission was a joy, like it wasn't even there. Killer power and smooth transmission, our notes said. It's what you're always looking for. It has Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) and manual shift mode with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM). The QX56 uses a rigid frame with thick side rails, and independent suspension. With the Deluxe Touring Package ($4650), ours had the Hydraulic Body Motion Control system. It's a closed hydraulic circuit that connects the shock absorbers and moves hydraulic pressure between them, to reduce body lean in corners. High-tech anti-sway bars. The ride is firm but always comfortable. We would have liked the seats to grip more, or else be a bit softer; but after all, the QX56 is not exactly a driver's car. Wide flat seats probably make more sense, with many front-seat passengers (spelled parents) often turning to the rear. Infiniti says that in the wind tunnel, the QX56 generates zero front and zero rear lift. Sounds great. The measurement is not something manufacturers include, and we wish we had the aerodynamic lift numbers from all the big SUVs, to compare. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Infiniti QX56 seats seven with second-row captain's chairs, or eight with a three-seat bench in the second row. Take your pick, same price, although most models in showrooms will be seven-seaters. There's leather galore, including the steering wheel, or premium leather with the Deluxe Touring Package. The driver's seat is 10-way power adjustable and passenger seat eight-way; both have two-way power lumbar support. Heated seats in front is standard, cooled is optional. The rear bench seat is also heated, but the captain's chairs aren't. Between the captain's chairs there's a gigantic console with two storage bins and two cupholders. They offer a generous 41 inches of legroom, and flip forward to access to the third row. It's an easy lever to pull, for anyone climbing in; still, a remote release button on the center stack and key fob is optional, allowing the driver to release it remotely. There are a total of six grab handles, needed because it's such a tall climb into the front and rear, but there are none for the passengers climbing back to the third row. The captain's chairs don't lock when they're manually flipped, so they might wobble when the third-row passenger uses them for support climbing in. Back in the third row there's good headroom and relatively good legroom, and the seats recline 20 degrees. There are three seatbelts, but we can't imagine. For 2013, Infiniti added perforation and stitching to the third row leather, to match the first and second rows, with the Deluxe Touring Package. The 60/40 third row seat folds flat, with a power button located in the cargo space. There's 16.6 cubic feet of space with the third row up, an outer-space-like 95.1 cubic feet with both rows down. The space is as big as a queen bed. We mean it. We actually did carry a disassembled queen-sized bed and mattress back there; the mattress had to be bent just a bit to get it in, but then it fell pretty much flat. We had room for a short palm tree on the rear floor. From the driver's seat, we liked the way-high seating position, and the clean gauges with luminescent white lighting. Clean graphics make instruments easy to read. Between the big tach and speedo there's a window with a small amount of digital information, though not enough: temperature, odometer and transmission gear. Far less expensive cars offer travel and fuel mileage here. The QX56 travel and fuel information is on the 8-inch touch-screen at the top of the center stack. You have to reach way over there and select the info from the menu, a distraction that compromises safety while driving. Worse, the Back button on the touch-screen menu, which you use a lot because of all the trial and error, is located at the top right of the screen, the biggest stretch of all. We don't like it. Another thing we don't like is that the radio can't be tuned while the car is moving. Seventy-eight thousand dollars for a car that makes you pull over and stop every time you want to change the radio station. Well, it could be tuned between satellite radio categories, and preset stations, but not to selected new stations. The Direct Tune button is blacked out on the radio while the car is moving. There might be a sly way around it, but it won't be easy and it should be. We liked the voice in the navigation voice guidance, it sounded clear and intelligent. But on the screen itself, some things were too small to read, for example the speed limit sign, whose icon is about the size of a postage stamp. Also the numbers for miles to destination, and other things. Our passenger, a 14-year-old super geek named Zeke, took one look at the navigation display and the way its functions were accessed, and pronounced it outdated. We didn't like the display for the rearview camera either. Infiniti brags about its 360-degree feature, but all we know is that even though we were paying close attention, we still backed (gently) into a pole one drizzly night, because the view didn't show the pole very well and the warning beep came too late. Our $3,000 Technology Package gave us MOD (Moving Object Detection), so maybe if the pole had been moving the camera would have seen it sooner. Speaking of beeps, the car warned us of something, every time we parked and took the key out, and we have no idea why. Maybe it was telling us we were parking and taking the key out. You might tell us to go read the manual. We tried. We always do. We've found that the more expensive the car, the thicker the manual; the thicker the manual, the more confused it is. It did tell us that there are nine cupholders and four bottle holders in the door pockets. The dashboard is shaped like a huge arc, leaving no flat tray up there, but it looks okay. Our interior was two-tone leather, brown and wheat, and so was the dash, with Mocha Burl trim as part of our Deluxe Touring Package. The center console is a big wide well, only one compartment, because it slides forward a few inches for an ergonomic armrest. The classic Infiniti analog clock is harder to read than a digital. Our $3100 Theater Package gave us two 7-inch color monitors and wireless headphones with remote control for DVD watching in the front headrests, and the $4650 Deluxe Touring Package provided the 15-speaker Bose Cabin Surround sound system. Back seat passengers can watch movies while front seat passengers can listen to music. Its strengths are powertrain, space and handling, while its flaws are mostly in touch-screen functions. Optional packages drive the price way up, and we don't think they're worth it. The Chevrolet Impala is a comfortable, convenient and practical car with ample room and a quiet ride. It has neat and clean lines with a fresh style that is pleasing to the eye. The Impala is a full-size front-wheel drive sedan capable of carrying up to six people. It comes in four trim levels: LS, LT, LTZ, and SS. The LS and LT include a 211 hp 3.5-liter V6 engine which is also available in an E85-capable version. The LT is available with a 233 hp 3.9-liter E85-capable V6 which is standard on the LTZ. The SS comes with a 303 hp 5.3-liter V8 engine. All trims come with a four-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes front bucket seats and front, side and side curtain airbags. The Chevrolet Impala is a carryover from 2007. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Chevrolet Impala is a big, roomy sedan. While classified as a midsize sedan, it's large for that class. Close in size to the Toyota Avalon, competes with mid-size and full-size cars. Among them: the Ford Taurus, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, as well as the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima. We find the Impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh, and it is, having been sharpened when the Impala was last redesigned for 2006. Other people think so: the Impala is among the top-10 best-selling cars in the U.S. This is a roomy car, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The Impala has a big trunk with a big trunk lid that makes loading cargo easy, and it has a healthy cargo capacity. Optional flip-and-fold rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items. On the road, the Impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available V6 engines, a 3.9-liter V6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the Impala handles well, and surprisingly so. Several models are available, ranging from strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to sleek and powerful performance car. The mid-level Impala LT probably best exemplifies the model line. We like the LT with the optional 3.9-liter V6, which features GM's Active Fuel Management to improve real-world fuel economy. The LTZ adds a heavy-duty suspension, leather interior and convenience features. The SS comes with a small-block 5.3-liter V8 engine that sounds great and delivers strong acceleration performance. Chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the Impala. We highly recommend the StabiliTrak electronic stability control. The audio system has been upgraded for 2008, and XM Satellite Radio is standard on all models. OnStar is standard, and in its latest version it will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers. Overall, the Chevrolet Impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. It also offers low prices. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The 2008 Chevrolet Impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car. Most recently re-styled for 2006, the current Impala features smooth lines. The big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. These details complement other quality attributes, such as tight tolerances of 3.5 mm or less between body panels and substantial grab-style door handles that won't pinch your fingers or snap away from your hand on a cold morning. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. The LS, LT and LTZ are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the SS sports a unique grille with SS-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The Impala SS also features Corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on LTZ and SS models, and is available on LT. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Chevrolet Impala features a new generation of V6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. They feature variable valve timing, which changes the orientation of the camshaft automatically, adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. The 3.5-liter V6 that comes standard on LS and LT generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. It gets an EPA-rated 18/29 mpg City/Highway. The FlexFuel version gets the same 18/29 mpg rating on gasoline or 14/21 mpg with E85 ethanol, useful in areas that sell ethanol. The 3.9-liter V6 (optional on LT, standard on LTZ) produces 233 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. It features a variable-length intake system and variable valve timing. It also features Active Fuel Management, electronic software that shuts off three cylinders when full power is not needed. Chevrolet says Active Fuel Management improves fuel economy by up to 12 percent in certain driving situations. Chevy has applied this technology before to V8s (where it was called Displacement on Demand), but this is its first appearance on a V6. The 3.9-liter V6 gets and EPA-rated 18/28 mpg, and it's FlexFuel capable and rated 13/20 mpg on E85. The four-speed automatic transmission is responsive and was never an issue, though some of the competition now offers more flexible five-speed automatics. The V8 that comes on the SS delivers 303 horsepower and 323 pound-feet of torque. That's more power than any other entry in the class. To sample that, we slammed the throttle open at a stop in first gear. The traction control system let the left front tire spin wildly for a few seconds before it caught up. We appreciated the extra power and torque available in a kickdown or passing situation, and we loved the brawny, muscular sound of this engine at full throttle. It's a challenge to launch quickly and cleanly at the same time, however. Besides wheelspin, there's a lot of torque steer: Slam down the throttle and you'll feel a significant tug on the steering wheel. The V8 features Active Fuel Management, which shifts between eight-cylinder and four-cylinder operation, depending on speed and load. The V8 is EPA-rated at 16/24 mpg using the more stringent 2008 test procedures. All Impalas come with a MacPherson-strut coil-over-spring independent front suspension, with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension uses a trailing tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. LS and LT models come with the softer FE1 suspension, while LTZ and SS come with the performance-tuned FE3 setup. We found a lot of pitch, dive, and roll in the chassis, plus a lot of uncertain driving moments with the added power of the SS. The SS, particularly, drives as though its chassis needed more development time before production. Steering on all models is over-assisted, fairly numb and uncommunicative. The Impala's four-wheel disc brake system (vented in front, solid in rear) represents an improvement over previous generations. Comprising new front brakes, improved rear brakes, and a new brake booster, the system is designed for quieter operation, longer pad life, and more resistance to brake pulsation. ABS, when ordered, includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution and traction control. On the road we found the Impala's brakes very much to our liking: powerful, direct, and linear, with a nice, progressive ratio of pedal travel to stopping progression. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The 2008 Impala has a lot going for it inside as well. Like the exterior, the cabin was completely redesigned for 2006, and has remained comfortably the same since then. The standard seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support compared to previous models. We didn't find the SS seats particularly comfortable or supportive. Lumbar support is too aggressive, while there's not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. A twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala LS, LT and LTZ models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim a no-cost option on LT and LTZ. The SS comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average. The dual-zone climate control system that comes on all but the base LS model is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The driver information center offers more than 50 different alerts, depending on the vehicle's equipment. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff. For 2008, a new family of audio systems features radios compatible with Generation 7.0 OnStar. The base audio system comes with six speakers, AM/FM/CD/MP3 capability, and XM Satellite Radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between AM, FM and XM. We really liked this system because we could set up all of our favorite stations in one row, for example, allowing us to quickly switch between AM news, XM news, FM music stations, and CDs. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Presets for the equalizer let you quickly switch settings from rock to country & western to talk radio. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with GM's radios. The Impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-CD changer. The premium system is Bose. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an iPod or remote cassette player. The new Generation 7.0 OnStar offers Turn-by-Turn navigation with the optional Directions and Connections service. Turn-by-Turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the OnStar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) Turn-by-Turn is less expensive than a GPS navigation system. The back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub underneath that can contain spills or transport a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with cushions down; and exposes convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. A generous pass-through from the trunk can be created by flipping the seat bottoms forward and the seat backs flat. The trunk is larger than that of most mid-size cars, at 18.6 cubic feet, and a huge trunk opening makes loading easier.
