Sure, you can go the LS5 or LS6 Chevelle route, but the best bowties will set you back a small house or two. And the same goes for the most desirable members of Buick's GS family and Pontiac's GTO line. Well, what if we said you could take home a magazine-featured, national award-winning example of a limited production A-body, which many GM enthusiasts aren't even aware of, for under $40K? That's probably enough to get your undivided attention, right? In addition to being a loud, broad-shouldered hunk of the rocket division's best metal, this Oldsmobile is 1 of just 3,547 Cutlass Rallye 350s ever produced. Restored with an acute attention to detail, the car features a roster of correct parts that range from an original engine all the way down to a sorted FE2 suspension. And best of all, these qualities exist within a balanced, fun-to-drive classic that doesn't require a second mortgage! HISTORY/CREATION Historically, the Rallye 350 is a pretty interesting piece. The Big Three seemed to understand that the muscle-car era was a bubble that would eventually be popped by rising insurance costs and increased government regulation. And in the case of Oldsmobile, prolonging the inevitable meant creating a fun, affordable car that was capable of turning heads using a rather conservative small block. To ramp up appeal, Olds compiled various trim pieces into a unique visual package that's highlighted by Sebring Yellow paint and very aggressive striping. Up front, a black, silver-trimmed grille, borrowed from the Cutlass S, rides between a urethane-coated bumper and pinned 442 W25 hood. Styled Steel II wheels join painted sport mirrors and trumpeted exhaust tips to mix a little function into form. And out back, a 442 W35 wing floats over black-trimmed taillights and a second urethane-coated bumper. The end result is a brand of visual punch that's simply unmatched by anything this side of Chrysler's brightest Hi Impact pastels. And, in reality, the package might've been a bit too risqu for Olds' traditionally conservative buyer base, resulting in relatively low production numbers and a high level of exclusivity. BODYWORK During a 4.5-year restoration that was completed in early 1995, this solid Cutlass was thoroughly stripped, carefully disassembled and treated to entirely new body panels with the exception of its floors, roof and driver's door. After hours of hard work, the car's clean profile presented itself as an excellent foundation for correct Sebring Yellow 2-stage. And today, one close look at our high-resolution photos reveals a handsome payoff in the form of one of the coolest looking muscle cars on the planet! ENGINE When this Olds' restorer found his new project listed deep in the classifieds, it had been upfitted with a 455 cubic inch big block. Fortunately, the seller had retained the car's original L74 Rocket 350 and was willing to include it with the sale. Hoist the fiberglass hood and you'll find that original mill proudly displaying a correct 395558 casting number in front of a matching partial VIN. At the top of the nickel-infused block, a big Quadrajet 4-barrel mixes juice from leak-free fuel lines with wind that's supplied by a correct, low-restriction air cleaner. That air/fuel mixture travels in to a high performance intake that's anchored by a traditional points distributor. That distributor feeds fire through proven Packard TV R Suppression Cables, which snake around correct "6" heads that are equipped with hardened valve seats and 3-angle valve jobs. Below those heads, forged, .030 over pistons shoot charred dinosaurs into cast iron exhaust manifolds and big, true-dual pipes. Aesthetically, the car's Satin Black fenders and snazzy gold block look fantastic against its bright yellow paint. Thanks to the pros at Wallingford, Connecticut's East Coast Machine & Performance, the stout powerplant is all day reliable. And the entire set up flat out rocks, from its vintage decals and Frigidaire AC compressor all the way to its re-cored radiator and tagged Delco Energizer battery. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION The bottom of this awesome Cutlass is completely solid and, thanks to a fully powder-coated chassis, shows no signs of undue wear or question-inducing battle scars. The aforementioned Rocket 350 fronts a rugged Muncie 4-speed that's much more fun than the car's original Turbo-Hydramatic 350. That proven transmission sends power to a stout 12-bolt that's equipped with a limited-slip differential and moderate, 3.42 gears. That driveline hangs in a correct FE2 Rallye suspension, which includes better shocks, thicker coil springs, reinforced control arms and a mandatory rear sway bar. Power-assisted discs and drums provide braking, while turns come courtesy of factory power steering. At the center of the car, aluminized pipes funnel spent gases through buff DynoMax Super Turbo mufflers. And at the corners of the car, color-keyed Styled Steel IIs spin G70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around stainless trim rings and rocket-branded center caps. INTERIOR For what was meant be a somewhat stripped-down Cutlass, the Rallye 350's interior offers plenty of visual niceties that give it a much more upscale feel. Open the doors to find sophisticated side panels that are accented with bright stainless and rich wood applique. Step past the Fisher Body sill plates and you'll find clean black carpet that's plush and fade-free. A nicely finished combination of bucket and bench seats mixes a stylish pattern with plenty of support. Between those seats, a factory console frames a long Hurst shifter. Above that console, an ornate dash hangs full telemetry over a standard AM/FM radio. The driver stays connected to the road through a correct Custom Sport steering wheel. And the passengers stow their essentials next to a fifth Styled Steel II/Firestone Wide Oval combination that's housed in a fully restored trunk. Up for sale is a nice 1970 Olds Rallye 350 in great condition and I've personally had the car for 16 years. I hate to see it go but I just don't use it much anymore. It has about 5,000 miles on the rebuilt original motor along with a Edelbrock intake and cam kit with a Holley spread bore carb and Olds heads with bigger valves. Also have original intake, carb, exhaust manifolds and heads that will come with car. It has a Flowmaster exhaust and sounds great. It has a automatic transmission with a 3:23 open diff. The interior is in good condition (newer seat covers along with foam, dash not cracked, headliner is tight, etc). The body and frame is in great condition. The tires have about 2,000 miles. I was planning on added factory air conditioning so an original air conditioning setup out of a 1970 cutlass and a new wiring harness will come with the car. There was only 3200 built in 1970 which was the only year and it will make someone a great car along with being very rare at your local cruises. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to come and personally look at the car. Reasonable offers only please.

Nicely restored a few years ago, this Olds absolutely delivers on the promises made by its outrageous bodywork. The Rallye 350 was designed to compete with the Road Runner and other "affordable" muscle cars, delivering the performance look with a more mild powertrain ("mild" being a relative term). All 3547 cars wore the same bright Sebring Yellow paint job with color-matched bumpers and a dramatic satin black graphics package, twin-snorkel fiberglass hood, and decklid spoiler, so it certainly looks the part of a maximum muscle performance car. It is only recently that these cars are achieving collector notoriety, so finding one accurately restored like this can be a challenge. The sheetmetal is in great condition, particularly the bulging rear quarters that look like horsepower rendered in steel, and while it's not perfect, it offers great gaps and doors that open and close easily. The decals, stripes, and logos are all accurate reproductions, and yes, the factory urethane-coated bumpers remain in place (many were jettisoned in favor of stock chrome units by irate dealers who struggled to sell the unusual-looking cars). Today, however, the Rallye 350 stands out as something special that's finally got collectors' respect. Despite their target audience being folks looking for affordable performance, this Olds is dressed up in some expensive designer clothes inside. Dual buckets and a center console definitely enhance its muscle car credentials, with the Oldsmobile chairs having an upscale pattern that's comfortable as well as stylish. The dash was standard Cutlass fare with burled walnut appliques and brushed stainless steel on the gauge faces, and as an Oldsmobile, this one carries factory A/C that was only available with the automatic transmission. Remote mirrors with color-matched housings were included with the package, and this car also carries a factory radio in the dash with a modern AM/FM/CD head unit in the glove box and speakers in the kick panels. The Hurst shifter knob isn't stock, but the original one is included with the car if that's what you prefer. Everything is recently restored and fresh, from the headliner to the carpets, with the trunk finished using a reproduction mat and custom "Tweety Bird" spare tire cover. The only engine in the Rallye 350 was the L74 Oldsmobile 350 which was rated at a stout 310 horsepower thanks to a recently rebuilt 4-barrel carb and standard dual exhaust. Reproduction decals were used wherever possible and even the little stuff is accurate, making this Olds look and run like it's supposed to. The air conditioning system has been upgraded to R134a refrigerant, and it exhales through a throaty dual exhaust system which is the only major deviation from stock. A rugged TH350 3-speed automatic backed by an Oldsmobile 12-bolt rear (which is different from the Chevy version) makes for an indestructible powertrain, and 3.23 gears out back make it an effortless highway cruiser. All Rallye 350s got the FE2 performance suspension setup and color-matched Rallye II wheels, with this particular car wearing trim rings that weren't standard equipment but are definitely a welcome addition. With its distinctive look and impressive performance, the Rallye 350 is a serious alternative for hobbyists looking for something a little unusual. Add in matching numbers and a few smart mods, and this is one you can drive and show with pride. What's even better is that cars like this 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass convertible typically offer more features for the money, and the Oldsmobile engines put out more torque than their siblings and offer better durability. If you're looking for a great A-body cruiser, an ultra-clean ragtop like this is a very smart choice. For something different, dig this sophisticated and subtle Olds's sublime color combination. That's code 81 Bamboo combined with a code 979 Saddle interior, both of which are this car's original choices. Repainted a few years ago, the Bamboo is a subtle look that neatly straddles the Oldsmobile's position between sport and luxury, and in a sea of bright blue and red A-bodies, this one definitely stands out. From the split grille up front to those artfully sculpted rear fenders, it still has a sporty, aggressive look, but the shiny paint tones it down a bit, making this the perfect car for the guy who likes a low profile with his muscle. Fit and finish are quite good, and there's no evidence that this car has ever been rusty, although it does show the usual signs of use and age. All the chrome and stainless is in good condition, and against that Bamboo paint, it definitely glitters. The Saddle interior is definitely an unusual choice, but with the Bamboo paint, it is absolutely the best possible choice. Plan old black? Too hot. White? Too bland. No, this two-tone tan interior is fantastic. It's also in decent condition, with only minor fading (what do you expect-it's a convertible from a sunny state). Door panels, carpets, and the dash pad are all quite good, and the original gauges offer brushed stainless steel faces and bright indicators that are instantly recognizable as Oldsmobile. An AM/FM radio has been fitted and powers a number of speakers throughout the interior, but otherwise it's quite stock and very handsome inside, with an upscale vibe that distinguishes it from the other cars. The tan power convertible top, complete with glass rear window, was installed in the not-too-distant past, along with new weather-stripping, and it includes a matching tan boot. Oldsmobile's Rocket 350 shared its displacement with the other GM intermediates, but little else. Thanks to a high nickel content block, Olds engines seem to be able to take a lot of abuse before giving up the ghost, and when they're well maintained like this numbers-matching unit, they'll run practically forever. This one is wearing what appears to be origianl Oldsmobile Gold paint, which dates back to the '50s, and you'll note factory A/C is part of the package with the system working properly. There's plenty of new gear, too, including a fresh alternator and master cylinder, so it's ready to enjoy. A TH350 3-speed automatic drives the original rear end, and it offers that distinctive Oldsmobile soundtrack thanks to a new Flowmaster exhaust system. Color-matched Olds Rallye wheels have been fitted with fat white-letter radials that look awesome. So give an Olds a chance, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Plenty of power, a dash of luxury, and a fantastic look all make it an affordable way to have some drop-top fun. This particularly handsome 1972 Cutlass convertible shows just how good-looking these cars can be, offering an awesome color combination backed by a strong-running V8. Personally, I've always felt the Oldsmobiles were the most handsome of the A-bodies, and in particular, the convertible with its sporty look and dramatic fender cut lines. As far as we can tell, this one still carries all its original sheetmetal, all of which is in good condition. A few years ago, the car was treated to a makeover with fresh red paint (code A Matador Red, which is this car's original color) but they didn't change any of the Cutlass's inherent goodness, so they avoided fake 442 stripes and other add-ons. The finish is smooth and deep, and while it has a few signs of use, this is definitely a high-impact car that gets a lot of attention. Perhaps if we'd had more of these running around, it would have reinforced the idea that Oldsmobiles aren't just family cars. This one has plenty of go to go with the show. All the chrome and trim is intact, including the intricate egg crate grille and multi-piece taillight lenses and it appears that the bumpers have been re-chromed because they look fantastic. Open the door and you'll discover a very clean black and white interior with lots of original components. A front bench seat makes this car ideal for cruising and details like the wood appliques on the door panels and dash remind you that this is a few steps up from a basic Chevy. The gauges show beautiful brushed stainless faces and delicate orange-tipped needles, with a familiar 2-spoke steering wheel that should look familiar to any Oldsmobile fan. This ragtop carries power windows, which is always nice in a convertible, plus factory A/C that blows cold thanks to good old R12 refrigerant inside, and the original AM/FM radio is still in its slot with upgraded speakers in the rear side panels. The highly original trunk includes a full-sized spare and the white power convertible top works easily and offers a matching white boot. One glance at the gold-painted Rocket 350 will tell you that this is an Oldsmobile engine. Sharing nothing with the other GM engines of the same size, the Olds 350 is well-regarded for its virtually bulletproof construction and high-nickel-content iron block that has proven to be exceptionally durable over the years. It has been nicely detailed but has retained its factory-issued equipment, ranging from the air cleaner to the A6 compressor for the A/C system. Sure, it shows a few signs of use, but a weekend of cleaning things up would take it up a few notches and it does run superbly. The chassis is as clean as you'd expect from a car that has lived its life in a warm climate. The TH350 3-speed automatic transmission shifts well and there are easy-cruising gears in the original 10-bolt rear end. Dual exhaust has been added and gives the car that familiar Oldsmobile growl and four Goodyear white-letter radials have been fitted to color-matched Rallye II wheels which really accentuate the Oldsmobile's sporting personality. Ultra clean, fast, and stylish, this Olds is the answer when you're looking to get noticed without spending a small fortune. How about a stunning 1971 442 wearing bright yellow paint from a Rallye 350 and packing a thundering 455 cubic inch big block. Of course, a few mods like front disc brakes, a Hurst dual-gate shifter, and a little more horsepower never hurt, and the result is a brutal 442 tribute that looks and drives like you've always imagined. The riveting yellow paint isn't for everyone, but if you're an Olds fan, you'll recognize it right away. Between the stripes, the twin-nostril W25 ram air hood, the wing, and the dual trumpets in the rear bumper, this 1971 Olds has every visual trick Oldsmobile used to get buyers into the showrooms. And they all work quite well to make one of the most eyeball-grabbing pieces of muscle we've ever offered. The work is extremely well done by a guy who knows Oldsmobiles inside and out so it looks the way the factory might have built it back in '71. Admittedly, it's not subtle so don't expect to keep a low profile, but if it's attention you crave, this car will do it better than most. The paint and bodywork are quite good and the paint has been protected with PermaFinish, so it's extremely low maintenance. Other goodies include LD taillights, brand new red W-30 inner fenders, and hood pins to give it a dominating look in the other guy's rear-view mirror. An equally large sum of money was lavished on the interior of this Olds, and gives the black buckets an almost-new look. It's quite correct and a nice contrast to the arrest-me-yellow bodywork, but there's no question you're sitting inside a performance car. The optional Rally Pack gauges include a Tick-Tock-Tach in addition to the standard stainless-faced dials, all set into a handsome woodgrained dashboard and assisted by a set of auxiliary gauges under the dash. A 4-spoke steering wheel looks properly sporty and a Hurst dual-gate shifter manages the TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, the only automatic gearbox stout enough to handle Oldsmobile's biggest big block. Even the vintage-looking AM/FM/cassette radio is new and powers fresh speakers throughout the interior. The trunk is outfitted with a reproduction mat as well as a custom cover for the full-sized spare. The reason you build a 442 tribute like this is horsepower, and lots of it. The 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile V8 packs a tremendous punch thanks to modifications like a performance cam, Holley Street Avenger 4-barrel carburetor on an Edelbrock intake, and long-tube headers, just in case you were feeling light on torque. Those red inner fenders make for a dramatic presentation and it's dressed up with lots of chrome for impact. MSD supplied the ignition system and the twin Magnaflow mufflers end in stainless trumpets under the rear bumper. Front and rear sway bars, front disc brakes, and a trick aluminum cover for the W27 10-bolt rear end mean that this Olds is built for fun, not static display. Color-coordinated Super Stock II wheels always look best on an Oldsmobile and wear new BFG radials all around. The comprehensive restoration has left this 442 as far more than the sum of its parts. A lot of spares and original components come with the car, too, so if it's more radical than you'd prefer, you can take it back a notch. But who would do that when this car is so much fun as it sits?
