It wasintroduced as an option package for F-85 and Cutlass models sold in the UnitedStates beginning with the 1964 model year. The 442 title comes from theconfiguration of the car: a four-barrel carburetor, a four-speed manualtransmission, and dual exhaust pipes. For 1967 the 442'sstyling and base engine remained the same. The 1967 442 package was based onthe top-line Cutlass Supreme series including the sport coupe (with centerpost), Holiday hardtop coupe and convertible. The car was acquired and mechanically restored in the 80's including a complete engine/drivetrain rebuild. Under the current owner's care the very hard to find correct Side Mount Covers were located, and additional mechanical work was undertaken including a complete brake rebuild including new lines. The original seat upholstery is still present under the seat covers. The car runs and drives quite well and is used sparingly on sunny summer days. Six New tires have recently been added. Included in the sale are some extra tail light lenses and the running board trim which is not currently installed. Its generally accepted that only a handful, at best, of these elegant cars remain.The long wheelbase and integrated trunk as well as a rumble seat are rarely found features that make this car stand out from its peers. Cadillac is currently the second oldest American automobile manufacturer behind Buick and among the oldest automobile brands in the world. Depending on how one chooses to measure, Cadillac is arguably older than Buick. Since GM has discontinued offering Oldsmobile, Buick has the distinction as the oldest American make. Cadillac was born in 1902, at the dawn of the twentieth century. Its founder, Henry Leland, a master mechanic and entrepreneur, named the company after his ancestor, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, born Antoine Laumet, the founder of Detroit. It was purchased in 1909 by General Motors and within six years, Cadillac laid the foundation for the modern mass production of automobiles by demonstrating the complete interchangeability of its precision parts, also establishing itself as America's premier luxury car. This is also the inspiration for the company's crest, which is based on a coat of arms "created" by Detroit's founder, around the time of his marriage in Quebec, in 1687 (there is no ancient "Cadillac" family or coat of arms in France). Cadillac pioneered many accessories in automobiles, including full electrical systems, the clashless manual transmission and the steel roof. The seat I settle into obviously has new foam and it immediately feels like I'm in a new car. That impression continues when I turn the key and the big 455 rumbles instantly to life. The Flowmasters sound good and I tap the throttle one more time (never get tired of hearing it) before pulling the "His and Hers" shifter into Drive. On the street, anything more than a light throttle produces instant wheel-spin and a second gear chirp. The car tracks laser straight, feels very composed and I've yet to hear a single rattle. 3/4 throttle from about 35 mph flattens me firmly against the seat. I slow back down to about the same speed and then nail it to the floor. The chirp this time is louder as an avalanche of torque unweights the front suspension and rockets the car forward. I back off at an indicated 80 mph and no shake, vibration or pulling is felt at any time. The power steering it light (typical for the period) but there is virtually no play at all. The suspension is controlled and confidence inspiring. Slowing down on the off-ramp, I hold my hands up and the power front disc brakes bring the car to a complete stop without me touching the steering wheel. A solid, well sorted car you will certainly want to take care of but when the urge strikes, you'll feel no need to hold back. This Oldsmobile perfectly captures everything I know and love about old school, American performance and 1971 was the last year for truly powerful muscle car intermediates.
